I had a lore-friendly unpainted space marine force once. they were the extremely grey knights.

I was at a tournament, and a player accidentally knocked an eldar harlequin off the table next to me. Not realising I went to walk away to get a drink only to step on the model, obliterating it.
Although it was not my fault it was knocked off the table I felt guilt for stepping on it, so gave him some cash for a replacement. No amount of glue would have fixed it.
It's just the right thing to do

We've had a recent Jansen in my local gaming scene. He pulled the same hijinks except his army was knights but like the marines, half assembled and he bounced back and forth playing either imperial or chaos depending what was more powerful. Might make a hobby nightmare out of that.

Was having a conversation with my dad, he’s got a Space Wolves army I’ve got my moms Blood Angels I’ve had since I was about 7
He recently was telling me how they’re(himself and the guys at the game shop) not really into 40k anymore because of their lack in attention toward the customer base or not pushing out anything new correctly.
He holds onto his army but his buddy just sold all of his GW stuff for really cheap.
I told them that I like the Spacemarine, I like what they are, the lore, the book. If GW Isn’t acting right or whatever the case I’d still have my army and keep them nice and presentable. I’ve gotten into 3D printing have been doing that for almost 8 years now and so I occasionally get a hold of 40k models that I can make up if I want. I do buy their stuff every once in a while but it’s usually just something along the lines of I bought it officially once now I can make as many as I want saving some moneys. Ultimately I am a huge fan, but I don’t think if they’re to sour then I’ll probably ever sell off or trash my 40k stuff. It’s just something I’ve known for a long time and really enjoy painting up or building terrain for them.

  • @thefightingfedora2976

Maybe a little elitist. I got into the hobby in the late nineties and I've never fielded a fully (or even mostly) painted army. It's just never been a priority for me. My old gaming group never required it so I never got around to it.
If that guy had run into a random pickup game with a fun guy that played a fair and enjoyable game we'd never have heard from him.
None of these Hobby Nightmare stories ever go
"I played a fantastic game against an interesting dude BUT his army was unpainted."

I haven't played in a long time, and now I don't play cause I have no time anymore. Not just 40k but other wargames too, mostly Bolt Action and some Napoleonic era wargames and stuff too. I put hours and hours into my armies and making them look nice. I practiced all kinds of techniques, and the last army I collected which was Dark Angels and Deathwing guys looked awesome because they were a result of over a decade of painting practice. I was always too nice to say "no" to people who wanted to play with unpainted armies, but inside I was always like "aw man, this sucks...".
It's a big part of the game for me. I didn't really care too much about winning or losing, I was into the emerging narrative of the battlefield, and the battlefield and both armies looking nice was a big part of muh immersion. I know I'm not alone on that either.
Imagine playing an alpha build of some RTS video game, where one faction is complete and looks amazing, but the enemy faction is still early WIP and is just untextured crude models... Sure the game would be mechanically the same but it would be impossible to get fully immersed in what's happening. That's what it always felt like.
I'm not saying everyone should have to have meticulous high effort models, but paint them with at least 2 colours before fielding them, god damn.
I get it if you have a painted army but you've just bought a vehicle or squad in-store and you're just keen to give them a try on the table asap before you paint them so you just glue them together and throw them into a game, I think that's fine. But if you've got 1000 points and they're all grey, you are joking.

This story about GW managers is why I just dont like the whole GW brand any more. I shopped at GW for years, since they first started out in the 80s when I used to play D&D and WHFRP. Not played a GW game or bought a GW product other than the odd pot of paint for years now. I am more of a painter and model maker than a gamer and the advent of 3d printing has been phenomenal for me. OPR has even got me back into playing the occasional tabletop game, but something went very wrong with the GW brand many many years ago.
My local gaming store only stocks GW products and the owner had to jump through so many hoops just to get GW artwork for the shop window. The shop is always packed on days when they have tables up for gaming or painting and in a couple of years he has built up a great gaming community in our small town. Its mainly slightly weird middle aged (old) men, but its good to see some young kids coming along with their slightly weird middle aged Dads :-) There are even a few women who come to paint and play. Long live proxy models, independent sculptors and gaming/hobbying for fun rather than pure profit, how GW dont want shops running their own games is madness.
Regarding Jensen and the unbuilt unpainted army, why would anyone want to do this? Surely over half the joy of this hobby is showing off those sweet models you have spent countless hours painting. Far better to turn up and have everyone say how cool your models look and losing than to win with grey.
Well that turned into a bit of a rant, sorry, but I do dislike GW and I dont like hobby police who say you cant play a friendly game as your model isn't exactly what GW specify it should be. Official tournaments, I get it but at local gaming nights, get over it, GW can survive with 3d printed space orcs, a lot of the models are better these days anyway :)

One of my hobby pet peeves is people who require that their opponent have a fully painted army and all they have themselves is poorly built and poorly painted models.
I'd rather play against properly built and unpainted models than some of the poorly painted and poorly built models I see on the tabletop.
Although I'd never refuse to play against someone just because their army isn't built or painted to a standard I like.
I just wish more hobbyists would take the extra time to remove mould lines, remove sprue nubs and fill the gaps/seams on their models.

As someone who has practically no hobby time due to family commitments. I would still expect myself to have all mu models painted and base coated, and if it's an army with a paint scheme at least the main colour (shaded and drybrushed) done.
It's the least that should be done not break the Immersion too much.

I mean, I'd be allright with someone using only a sprayed base layer on the whole model, some nuln oil and a really quick and messy dry brushing, just roughly paint the weapons with any metal color and done. You can spend a saturday afternoon for a whole detachment with that...

I play GW RPGs with old books, and on the rare occasion, I play a modern GW game I buy used models, prints, or models I already own. I'll be attending a 40K tournament in November, having paid GW $0 for almost a year. Feels good!

Model assembly even for the smaller armies takes a significant time investment, so its fair for someone to expect their opponent to meet that standard by at the very least have fresh models fully assembled. There would be circumstances for exceptions sure, but if I ever played with unpainted models I'd make sure they'd at least had a basecoat before I used them again.
As someone whose relatively new to the hobby I have newfound respect for people who've fully painted their models after applying just the trim to 30 World Eater Berserkers by hand.

Fast forward to June 2024 me and my wife both want to get into 40k, but I threw away the armies I had. I looked into buying back in and through research I'm hearing all this scummy stuff about GW and it's blowing my mind cuz it's so different from what I remember. Makes me sad

I owe you a nice testimony North. Your channel matters to God, because he's using it for his good. I went from life to death...nit saying you Did that. But you did add something. Don't know if it was even easy or fun what in receiving. Dont what you might prefer to call it, or even if I always enjoy having it, but without it other parts wouldnt fit in right to complete this shattered mechanism we operate. I need to take the time to thank you properly in a format that is most easily consumable for your taste. And I love your style, its immediately warm. I can almost imagine being with you one day in a musty LGS tournament table, maybe it's got a pub next door to have a pint and you tell me the parts about your life that are even more endearing: Youve left out a whole bunch fans enjoy that would likely make good life story episodes. There, that's my blessing to you: choose a fee hard or fun years describing your scenic career path through life. Your favorite stories or little know events in History to teach your students, most interesting students passing thru, weirdest fellow professors or odd stuff that most didnt realize in your view about being a teacher. There you are, you'll have content backup for slow letter week...my blessing to you, North. With my faith, I'll hold that one day when I'm further down my path to full potential we will cross paths. You'll hear back from future me, as I'm passing those milestones, then i.ll have a story worth the wait for your channels pile. Cheers

When I wanted to be able to swap out the load out for the first army I ever built (Grey Knights), you know what I did?
I magnetized the arms. I set it up so that I could pull the arms off and swap them out for arms holding different weapons using really small neodymium magnets.
Nowadays, I just buy two sets and build both because it’s easier-except for stuff like imperial knights since it’s relatively easy to add large, strong magnets to key joints.
I also started in 7th, about a month before 8th launched. Haven’t been active since the plague that shall not be named happened, but I still buy and build the models for fun.

But at least have the stuff assembled. exceptions obviously could be made for really new/young players or if it’s only like 1 unit, especially if they’re upfront about it (ie if they say hey you want to play, just so you know one of my terminator squads doesn’t have heads because I haven’t had time to finish them up yet but everything else is built). Basically the more they feel bad and apologetic about it, the more lenience because they probably are just new.

More or less anything goes if it's about the same size it depicts a person with a gun or a bow if it's range add to fix a person with a sword if it's melee. I often don't even use the official miniatures anyway although I do paint them and they do look like the thing that they are meant to depict.
I will say that small bonus if your army is modeled and painted better

I can tell you, North, that you're not being elitist at all. It's one thing if your army isn't finished with painting or most just have a basecoat. Just as long as everything is glued together and I can tell what it is. Personally, I've been collecting 40k for a year or two, but I don't want to play until I know everything is painted, detailed, shaded, and flocked. Everyone has their own painting preferences and speed of completion. However I draw the line if half of the army isn't even assembled

I don't find it elitist to expect someone participating in a hobby... to participate in said hobby
Plunking down a 1/4 finished, barely assembled "army" is not participating

I’ve spent pure hours pouring as much love as I can into my models.
To have a table of unfinished eBay bits as an opposing force, would turn me off playing that game.

Immediately lost my interest at the hobby snobbery. 40K used to be about just having a good time and enjoying each other's company throwing some dice and laughing now it's become this kind of elite club of people who look down their noses on others who they can't afford to spend as much as them or don't hobby as much as them and that's really not all right and it's a giant reason why despite playing 40K for 30 plus years I was finally done with it

you point about wanting to play a finished army isn't elitist because you aren't against just for the optics, you have a reason. it would ruin your immersion and you spend a lot of time, money and effort for that immersion.
that said, do hate it when people wont play you because the colours aren't right or the quality not high enough. That is elitist.

  • @mem4021
    @mem4021 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

The only thing even vaguely approaching elitism that you may have is if someone has an army built, but the state of painting is lacking. Someone not even having an army built but still playing with it is a bit much though.

I am still new to 40k so my opinion of what is & is not eliteist I not likely the same as those who have been in the hobby for a long time. but not even having models glued sounds like you are not ready to play.

Pretty elitist take tbh. Not everyone has the time to sink into it. Maybe you'd be better off just playing video games if a paint job is such a deal breaker.

As long as they are built I’m fine with them not being painted. Not everyone has the same amount of free time or financial stability, to buy every paint they need or may want etc. At least for me the only games workshop store near me is tiny like 2 tables only to play small unfortunately, seems like the hobby is dying near menor lol people are only playing at their homes.

I think part of the reason games aren't played in GW stores is because there's nothing more off-putting to newblood than "That Fucking Guy."
They may only be 10% of less of the playerbase, but the stinking, BO-ridden, greasy "umm ackshually" sort is like an active repellant.

I don't think it is elitist. Plastic is a no-go, at least spray em in one colour and put some details. Black primer with Leadbelcher on the metallics is not much to ask.
I've played WIP armies before, where about half of the models were ~80% done and the other half was primed black with some first layers of base paint. We had just gotten into Combat Patrol 10th and the guy couldn't finish in time. All good.
But don't come into a 2000pt game being 10years in the hobby and face me with half assemblee grey messes man... That's just no fun

I feel like it's only elitist if you're JUST dogging on people with unpainted models just because painting is such a time and money sink. There could always be a legit reason why someone hasn't painted their models yet. Maybe it's a monetary roadblock on getting painting supplies but still want to play, maybe they just didn't want to drop money on paints before knowing if the wargaming side of it is something they actually enjoy, or any sort of actually decent reason besides just being lazy, which is usually easy to tell. We occasionally get people at our local hobby store who assemble Kill Teams on the spot and want to try them out before committing to getting all the stuff for them, but we have fun with it and do something similar to what one guy in a story on here did and pretend like our armies are running training simulations with the bare plastic models or come up with some scenario where they're weird Warp manifestations. It's a fun way to get around the immersion breaking aspect of the opponent's army being unpainted.
However, when it comes to the army being half assembled and missing whole parts, there is nothing elitist at all about not wanting to waste your time on someone who can't even assemble their army correctly or who obviously can't be bothered to fix the ones that are clearly messed up. Like, your Chaplain's head falls off in the box and you can't find it, okay, no problem, but showing up with literal tank turrets missing and half of your army looking like zombies with missing arms and legs is just unacceptable - especially if your opponent has clearly taken the time to assemble, paint, and maintain a good-looking army.

  • @templarbrethren7701
    @templarbrethren7701 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

If the problem is the army is not built and missing turrets like this then no it’s not elitist. But if the issue is the army not being painted I’d say definitely elitist.
