Make collars for your plants from plastic bott!we and wrap with copper tape. This should help prevent slug damage.

Hi Emma, the ants don't kill the aphids they farm them for the honeydew they produce and protect them against their predators like the ladybird. The ants are the aphids body guards.

Give the ants ajar of jam and they stop protecting the aphids who soon die out

Probably a bit for this year, but we have used ‘slug collars’ for a while with good success. They are plastic but they have lasted years and years. They work for runner beans and squash plants that are planted further apart. They can then be moved to others once the plant is big enough to survive. ‘Garden Organic’ stock them. My daughter and I love watching your diaries, your attitude and approach is very valuable and inspiring (bearing in mind we’ve been battling this veg growing for over 20years) and often now quote to just “keep whacking it in” 😅

Sprinkle snail pellets either side of your beans and young seedlings.
Also get big boxes and sprinkle them around the perimeters of your allotment regularly. I am afraid it’s the only way. Good luck.🙂

Hope you have a lovely time camping, we went camping over the bank holiday, came back with a cold, that’s taking its time to vacate 😒. I sow extras before going we went. There were some new slug damage after camp but not too bad phew. I have sunflowers and sweetcorn planted next to each other and both are doing well. I also have peas sown in amongst the sweetcorn and sunflowers. I will be going out into the garden when it’s dark to slay slugs with my trowel ( I will sprinkle salt on them if I finding too many to slice and my trowel getting too slimy ) sometimes just got to be brutal… I have a pond , there’s a toad or two about somewhere, I lots of birds visit my garden …and still there are lots of slugs and snails.

re slugs, could be because we are entering a solar maximum, more energy from the sun= warmer air, warmer air holds more water so more chance of rain clouds building. Also loving the slug genocide, just need a bit more swearing like the old days

I do the 3 sisters every year. That's sunflowers, beans and squashes. The beans grow up the sunflowers. 😊 I'm afraid I am brutal with slugs. I grow most things from seed right into the ground. I use pellets when the plants are tiny. I don't spray anything, and have a pond etc. I'm on a very small budget and I depend on what i can grow. I really cannot afford for the slugs to eat everything. I tried for a year to use alternatives. When plants are established it's not so bad. Should add, i live in a flat and have no green house, hence sowing straight into ground. With your beans you could cover with cut plastic bottle until established. 😊

@@siobhanpainter802 indeed. I missed out the corn. I grow beans, corn, squashes... and sunflowers. They thrive when grown together. My squashes always do better when grown this way. I think maybe nitrogen from the beans. My sunflowers grew to about 8ft! 🤣 I do have a large patch for this growing method though. No in a raised bed.

The ants farm the black fly for the honey like secretions. The reason given for taking the tops out of the Broad beans is to stop the black fly as supposedly they go for the young shoots at the top! This doesn’t seem to me to be true as mine have the black fly down the stem like yours. I am going to try the washing up liquid unless I find ladybirds! Good luck. Plots are looking fantastic.

Slugs love the new shoots of dahlias! Try to cover the new shoots with a clear plastic dome or a clear plastic pot and make sure there is no gap between the pot and the soil. The slightest gap and the slug or snail will get in. Once the shoots have leaves then you should be ok.

Hi Emma, I tried making a "natural" herb-based spray to get rid of the blackflies. I came back to see if it worked later, and I think there was no difference. I don't think they do any real long-term harm as, like you said, they still grow. I watched a famous veg grower on TY and he reckons leave them, and I agree. All those flowers are going to be beans, and chopping them off seems silly when it's what you're growing them for, plus if we don't give the bugs their food who they won't be in our garden. Just my tuppence worth. Thanks for the video

Lavender grows best in full sun in a dryer area. They're Mediterranean plants. If you put them in with vegetables, peppers etc the fragrance will deter the insects that eat the food plants.
I tried an experiment, pushed soil firmly against the edges of the beds because I noticed the gaps the slugs may use to stay out of the sun. It does seem to work, fewer slugs in a week.

Don't ants farm those bugs? So imo ants on broad beans are a warning sign. I topped off all my broad beans mainly because I hardly got any flowers going on. But I think I also sowed the wrong variety for Spring as in Aquadulce Claudia. Which is supposed to be an autumn sown variety. If I get a meals worth it's a lesson learned.
