      Hi Sandra in the sky. Maybe catch you there. You will love it, the best place for siv as you are high enough for repeat manoeuvres and in smooth conditions. I took a tandem first and asked him to spiral etc so to know what to expect when it came to siv plus it gave me a good guide to launch and landing. My one piece of strong advice is to make sure you have a helmet headset with speakers right next to your ears, those that had a radio on lanyard couldn't hear instructions at critical times like stalling and spiralling,.

Interesting to see the teleferik now in action and the new system for paying, thank you. We were also told to register on that website at the time but in practice just had to show our licenses and register at the pay station on the road up on first flight then just a show of licence and sign in briefly on subsequent flights. • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dave, thanks for the comment.
      I don't know of any videos that specifically provide site briefs. For me the most important thing would be a good site brief which is often hard to come by in situ.
      The types of things I feel that are important to consider for a newer pilot would be:
      Knowing the areas to avoid flying near/over.
      Heading straight out toward the sea until confidence and experience builds.
      Not being flustered on launch because it can be very busy.
      Very little space to lay wing out so a really good familiarity with prep.
      Knowing the best areas to land to avoid obstacles and other pilots. You have seen some of these on my earlier video.
      I note that you have seen two videos; there is also a 2020 update that you may not have seen that may be useful (th-cam.com/video/CKOe690q7-k/w-d-xo.html)
      Hope that this helps.

      @@Frank274 That’s a very helpful and informative reply. Thank you very much.

      Thanks again all the best.

    • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Dave Harper. Actually, two other suggestions:
      Do not be in a hurry to launch; spend some time looking at what is going on actually on launch and what is happening to wings immediately after launch. This can give you valuable information on flying conditions.
      Do not rule out going back down the mountain if you feel uncomfortable for any reason. Peer pressure can play a part in this and has lead to accidents in the past. I would not hesitate to go back down if I felt conditions were not right for me.

      I was able to go in October despite Corona.
      You can fly there all year but Oludeniz closes down for winter so getting accomodation can be an issue.
      The lower take off (1200m) is often used in winter if conditions higher up are not good.
      I guess it would be OK to see if accommodation is available in Ovacik and use the public buses for the Teleferik.
      Ich konnte trotz Corona im Oktober gehen.
      Sie können das ganze Jahr dorthin fliegen, aber Ölüdeniz ist für den Winter geschlossen, so dass es ein Problem sein kann, eine Unterkunft zu bekommen.
      Der untere Start (1200m) wird oft im Winter benutzt, wenn die Bedingungen in der Höhe nicht gut sind.
      Ich denke, es wäre in Ordnung zu sehen, ob es in Ovacik eine Unterkunft gibt und die öffentlichen Busse für die Teleferik zu nutzen.

    Nice video. Why does the bowl give you lift? Is it air coming up through the mountain or thermals around that area?

    • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments Ben.
      It can be both, a general southerly wind of sufficient strength can generate ridge lift coming up the steep sides. But because there is a lot of exposed rock in that area the rocks heat up and from about midday will generate thermals, often very strong.
      Hope that answers your question.

  • @turkeyphant
    @turkeyphant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Are there only thermals later in the year? Seems there's nothing at all at the moment in April/May.

    • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question!! I only ever go Sep/Oct but I am actually there at the moment, arrived yesterday.
      There was some thermic flying from about 2pm but you needed to be able to get across to it. Not easy currently as they have closed all launches apart from 1200m. That is a first for me and pretty much everybody is hoping that they sort it out soon.
      In short, those of us here are still hoping for thermals but due to a very cold winter they may be slow in appearing.🤞

    • @turkeyphant
      @turkeyphant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Frank274 Thanks. Where is good to find midday thermals from the 1200m launch? And I know everyone is saying something different, but have you heard anything about when the higher launches will be opened this season?

    • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@turkeyphant simple answer, nobody knows. I have spoken to a lot of locals who have been trying to get them open without success. They are closed due to snow blocking the roads higher up.
      Thermals can be found left of 1200m launch beyond the obvious ridge. The trick is getting there!

      @lieblingmike I cannot remember the form specifically as it is two or three years since I registered but I think that may relate to an instructors certificate.
      My suggestion, if you are not an instructor, is to leave it and add only the files to show your current qualifications.

  • @glidewatch
    @glidewatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Incredibly helpful video Frank. Thank you. Can you still just walk up to the Kiosk and buy your ticket? Is the purpose of this system to try and space out the timings of take offs, or just have a clearer log of use, or get the tandem pilots to register passengers. Is it this way or no way!! Once again thank you.

    • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @glidewatch thanks for the comments Bill, appreciated. You can just walk up to the kiosk and buy your tickets provided you have your flight code to scan.
      I don’t know the purpose of the timings as nobody attempted to regulate the launches in any way and of course, nobody knows what launch you end up on due to conditions. It is partly to do with tandem pilots as they have to fill in the logs as well as solo pilots.
      Yes, at the moment it really is this way or no way. I saw first hand a number of pilots turned away due to not having registered. One of the reasons I did the update as soon as I could.

      @@allanblackett8345 That depends on where you are.

    • @Frank274
      @Frank274  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Med; the tandem mini buses (30-35TL) still go up so lots of pilots get them. I used them a few times in October but went predominantly up on the cable car. If you go by cable car you will need to get the Dolmus (local bus) to the cable car station (5TL). Then you will pay for the cable car up (30TL) and then pay for launch (60TL). So you need to pay 60TL for launching no matter how you get to the top.
      I hope that helps.

    • @lieblingmike
      @lieblingmike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was there in 2020 the minibus was usually 20L so marginally cheaper than the cable car but they may have levelled up by now.
