    I tried it in a vm and was so happy with the snappy performance, I ended up installing on a laptop and absolutely love it. My fave distro atm. Glad you got to check it out.

    Oh I get it! It's Mabox because it's from Manjaro with OpenBox

    NIce to see Mabox getting some attention. I switched to it from Manjaro when their community Openbox maintainer had to retire late in 2021. I would have tried maintaining it myself, but I am similarly a bit long in the tooth to commit to such a project, so I'm letting younger folks do all the preconfiguration. :)
    I fell in love with #!'s brilliant Debian-based treatment of Openbox years and years ago, and switched to Manjaro when I needed up-to-date audio and video software but was no longer looking for the deep Linux learning experience that is Arch. Twenty years ago, I'd have chosen Arch, but man it takes time to learn new things and I've not got nearly as much of it as I used to! So again, I let the young folks at Manjaro take care of most of the system-halting bugs on the bleeding edge.
    Openbox has never had a single place for GUI customization; since it is just a window manager, it is up to the maintainer/user to find or develop tools to consolidate theming the window manager itself (Openbox Config was the first theme manager you found) with that of the interface elements (lxappearance in this case), plus the wallpaper, panels, and whatever other eye candy one has installed. It is kind of a DIY approach that Openbox makes necessary--unlike KDE or Gnome--but myself, I love the minimalist design that #! so expertly pulled out of Openbox. Mabox is just one of #!'s design successors, I'd say.
    The Mabox Theme Manager is a custom tool built on yad and it pulls all of the above together: wallpaper, window decorations and widgets, the tint2 panel, and conky all can be themed in one place, but in order to customize your own theme, you have to tweak all of those things separately yourself.
    I have no idea how Mabox is pronounced. I call it may-box becuz I grew up in the Deep South of the US. But the primary maintainer lives in Poland, and I don't know what the average 'a' sound is in Polish.
    May-be it doesn't matter. :)

    Matt: Great video!
    I have been using Mabox for over 2 months or so.
    Great distro!
    Love OB the way Mabox uses it in the distro.
    They have customized so many functions w/tin2 panel and the side left/right menus.
    Before running anything, my PC is at 400MB free memory.
    Very snappy and fun to use.
    This and Arcolinux are my main distros now.
    Your videos keep getting better all the time.
    Keep it up!
    Blessings.

    The 'free -m' error is probably because they have an alias set for 'free' with a non-compatible option or with -m already set.

    • @airilsra
      @airilsra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, it's already aliased with that option. this is a thing with Manjaro in general.

    • @snowhusk
      @snowhusk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeap, can confirm - some distros, Manjaro too, have free=free -m by default, so "free -m -m" doesn't make sense, but hints to you in the terminal that the app is in fact installed

  • @Hikarmeme
    @Hikarmeme 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would assume the first theme manager you tried was just changing the WM theme and not the GTK theme. The second one was changing both plus the tint2 and conky theme I believe.

    hi, i'm a newbie and i have a old pc and I installed mabox but with a few too many dependencies and who knows what ... in fact it has become too slow, I would first do a clean installation of mabox linux again! I would like to have a tip to have the maximum compatibility of mac and windows programs (filmora 11) and simplicity thanks to Aur, snap and flatpack. It would also be useful to install Yay, Auracle-git, Aurutilus? If so, in what order of sequence? Thank you.

    I'm currently running Freebsd but when I ran Slackware Current as my main OS I had Mabox on another partition just in case Slackware Current would break. It never did for the 3 years I ran it; but I really did like Mabox . And now they offer a 5.4 kernel for those with older hardware, a very nice touch.
    Mabox had no issues for me. I once ran Crunchbang on an old Dell laptop years ago and loved it. So to have an Arch/Manjaro based #! alternative is awesome since I prefer Arch/Manjaro to Debian.

    Interesting, I've been using manajro for a long time now, loved it but I'm probably going to jump to NixOS (not because of anything that happened with Manjaro but NixOS seems especially appealing to me). I didn't think anyone would try to created a manjaro-based distro, does it still use pamac?

    I loved Manjaro when I switched over to Linux a few years ago. Just everything worked and worked great.. After about 2 years, things started to just not work or would freeze up constantly... I eventually distro hopped for a few days and moved on. I really Like OpenBox and I really like KDE.. MabLox is real nice eye candy out of the box. Just afraid to commit to a Manjaro Arch Based distro again. I know the system is as good as you treat you it, and I treat my systems very well, might install on it on my extra laptop and see how long itll run before issues arise if they do. Looks really nice. Thanks for the video, nice video as well. Whats your Main OS?

    I tried Manjaro Sway yesterday on an old laptop and I'm loving it. Since it uses Wayland the touchscreen support is excellent out of the box and it's way lighter than Gnome
    If things keep this way I might install it on my main laptop.

    Matt I did try this out on a spare tower and I thought it was like KDE with a 1,000 ways to theme it and way more than I wanted. Openbox is not my cup of tea either but I did have fun with it. The distro did have a bunch of updates the 1st time I ran it but did have the normal Arch update and some distro update's as well from time to time... The hillbilly in me calls it Ma(y)Box but that is must me and I to am wrong at times too!
    Great video Matt Opps and all... :-)

    The error on free at 6:10 "Multiple unit options doesn't make sense" implies the distro has an alias in the shell's .rc file that conflicts with -m. 'which free | xargs -m' should get around it.

    Arch environment is lacking GUI tools (or even just automated scripts) to help people create custom ISO's or Snapshots... no matter how hard these guys stuck to their stubborness, your distros are not going to get massive adoption unless people can easily customize them... which is a shame since I loved how practical the pacman package manager felt to use, very straightforward and easy to use

    I had Manjaro Budgie and loved that--- and then tried MABOX and really loved that... but then they did an overall upgrade one day and everything went to hell in a handbasket as the old saying goes-- stuff would change on its own, or not work at all- and it was just like it lost its mind. I had to give it up- need to do actual WORK- and not spend all day FIXING what I had fixed the day before.... IF- however, they give notice that the crap has been FIXED-- I'd LOVE To have this- MABOX for a daily driver.. It's beautiful- easily changed to be anything I want- and VERY fast... I'm waiting for the ntice that the "upgrade" that screwed it all up- is FIXED!! I NEVER use a virtual anything--and it STILL went wonky- BIGTIME!!
