    Debian Sensible Browser isn't actually a browser but a script that calls whatever browser you have installed and set as your default, a bit like what you said about Xfce being able to call your web browser from the menu. That browser you have there is Kumo SSB, a site specific browser much like Mint's WebApps.

    • @s1nistr433
      @s1nistr433 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Still an extremely rare browser though, I've never heard of Kumo SSB

    • @MichaelWilliams-lr4mb
      @MichaelWilliams-lr4mb ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. "Sensible" is often times used as another word for "default" in a lot of distributions, I've noticed.

      That probably explains why I couldn't find it in either my search or in Discover.

    • @Ctaylor83
      @Ctaylor83 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Debian Sensible Browser, is in fact, Kumo/Debian Sensible Browser, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Kumo plus Debian Sensible Browser. Debian Sensible Browser is not a browser unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Kumo browser made useful by the Kumo core libraries, utilities and vital system components comprising a full web browser as defined by web standards.
      Many computer users run a modified version of the Kumo browser every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Kumo which is widely used today is often called Debian Sensible Browser, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Kumo browser, developed by the Kumo Project.
      There really is a Debian Sensible Browser, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the browser they use. Debian Sensible Browser is the script: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The script is an essential part of a web browser, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete web browser. Debian Sensible Browser is normally used in combination with the Kumo web browser: the whole browser is basically Kumo with Debian Sensible Browser added, or Kumo/Debian Sensible Browser. All the so-called Debian Sensible Browser distributions are really distributions of Kumo/Debian Sensible Browser!

    One of the things that bugs me about Xfce is the inconsistent size of icons in the system tray. It's so wonky - you would think someone would have come up with a way to fix that.

      Mine is the way windows are rendered, you can see it at the 12:31 mark, the window decoration gets rendered first and then the contents of the window gets rendered after, it gives a sluggish unpolished feel to the whole desktop in my opinion, I think mate does the same thing, kde, cinnamon, and gnome don't have this problem.

    It's nice, but since the passing of Mark Greaves, Peppermint ain't Peppermint anymore. Peppermint 8 was my very first Linux distro. Light around 345 Mb after startup and blazingly quick. It was a mix of LXDE and Xfce and based on Ubuntu. It was always a very minimal distro, so you could install what you wanted, not what the developer/developers wanted. Mark Greaves was a genius.
    Matt I have a request could you check out eznix OS? It's also based on Debian.

    I think that Peppermint Os is a pretty good distro, I used it for a school laptop and it works pretty good considering that for my experience, it works just fine. I came from Ubuntu so it was pretty easy to learn and took so much less ram than Windows. I switched to Arch but I had a very good time with using Peppermint.

  • @crism8868
    @crism8868 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I used Peppermint as my main distro for several years before moving on to MX Linux. Initially I was dismissive of this current release until I saw your review. While it is too minimal to be useful as a daily driver I think Peppermint is perfect for this old laptop that I have laying around, where I don't want to worry too much about having the latest software or constantly updating Firefox or whatever. Who knows I might give it a try now :)

  • @MichaelWilliams-lr4mb
    @MichaelWilliams-lr4mb ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Peppermint OS was initially created as a social media-centric distribution. So it's of course going to have a browser. I remember when I first learned about it, it was considered an alternative to something like Chrome OS.
    As someone said, "Debian Sensible Browser" is just a script that loads what's supposed to be the default browser. In this case, it does appear to be LuiaKit. Funny thing is when DistroTube looked at this, he thought it was Qutebrowser.

    I had an old samsung laptop from 2009 that wouldn't run well with any other OS I tried (arch with xfce, ubuntu 64 and 32 bit, linux mint, AntiX linux). Every distro I tried had a weird issue with my laptop where characters would just disappear and flicker in any app, graphical elements wouldn't render properly, some would get duplicate, some would render in the wrong spot, some would just flicker and become black boxes. Most of those distros were super slow on my machine, boot took minutes and opening a program could take 30 to 45 seconds. The most usable was Ubuntu 32bit because it's the only one that wouldn't glitch the fuck out every 2 seconds (it still did but it did it a lot less), so I settled with it for a few months. But the lack of software support was really bad
    When I installed this specific version of Peppermint OS, boot time went down to around 40 sec, and opening programs takes a few seconds after boot, and less than a second after that (even bloated-ass chromium). No more graphical glitches, everything is supported because it's 64 bit, my bluetooth headphones worked perfectly (I had to install blueman first), WIFI picked up the signal with no issue, my flatpak with flathub was easy to setup (programs show up in the system menu with no issue), I can play music on my SONOS, I can chromecast to my TV, my printer just works out of the box, even steam worked well, so I played some Duke3D and Ion Fury, pretty much the only thing that would run on this 15 year old Intel integrated graphics chip, but it RAN.
    From now on, this is 100% the distro I'm using on any obsolete hardware I can find.

    The old Peppermints turned those old dog netbooks into an amazingly fast cloud based machine affordable and light like a Chromebook but pure FOSS. On a better computer, it got even faster. That's also what led to the no installed browser concept that people stumble on. For those who wanted speed and cloud over all else, they picked accordingly and those who prioritized privacy/opensource made their choice. From that legacy given that we all mostly agree there is no perfect browser even today, it all makes sense though granted it challenges someone new. Absolutely it was gutting when Mark died. Culturally I respect those who say light a candle, turn off the lights and the story ends but equally I respect those who say the survivors should carry on the legacy. Pep was going to have to evolve and many things all point to the wisdom of basing on Debian. To me, in both beauty and benchmarks, this is certainly a worthy project, it's emphasis on choice let's you go big or small, use packages or flatpak, and this is a project for the future.

    "Debian is hard to install" - try Vanilla OS at manual partition mode. I wonder how they can make such a name for themselves without getting the basic things right when making a distro in 2023. For example, even if you select ext4 for home directory, it will auto switch to btrfs. Etc. I tried it, then installed Debian 12, and I can confirm Debian is much better, maybe it has a few more screens but thats about it.
