    Thanks for reviewing this distro Matt, I've tested it in vm myself. I like it, what I like most is the very fact that most of his extras are not installed by default, it makes the distro to be an easy arch install with minimal but nice theming of KDE. When ever I take an easy Arch install I always find that I need to remove a lot of stuff to make it mine (a reason why I build my own vanilla arch for daily driver), even with Arco, I often have to strip off so much that I don't ever use it as main driver anymore. He allows you to turn the install into your own stuff or get his stuff if you so wish.

    I'm starting to watch through your videos as I missed quite a few in the past months. I'm very curious as to your thoughts on the current state and where the future of Linux may lie from a desktop user perspective. Ofc servers will mostly be unaffected but just in my shop I'm seeing a lot of people wanting to switch over to Linux on their laptops and one customer wanting water-cooling added to his tower and also set up a few games and POP OS. Very interesting. I've only talked to 2 people in the last 3 years about Linux in my shop as they usually fix their own problems thus never entering a repair shop. But recently I've gotten a lot of people simply wanting an OS change.

  • @jongeduard
    @jongeduard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thank you for this video review. Personally I manage Arch by myself and don't need any extra installers, but I see this one is a great one, because indeed for it's simpleness (with which it conserves a main principle behind Arch) and how it still gives you an easy overview of so many available options.
    8:48 I fully agree! I use Btrfs on ALL my Arch systems and should definitely be the default these days!
    People still say that EXT4 is more stable and reliable and such but it's false, obsolete information. Btrfs is very stable today with so much more reliability than EXT4. Except for parity raid (raid 5 and 6) (but that's not even an issue, as I use ZFS (on Linux) for storage pools - another very great COW filesystem).
    Luckily distro's like Fedora also do this today, so gradually things begin to move.
    15:52 LSHW is a thing from Manjaro. Indeed hardware related: it's software to easier install drivers and stuff.

    The reason you have issues with your login screen is that you haven't installed the VMWare tools. It installs a video driver that facilitates using the hardware and gives acceleration, better resolutions, etc. That's why this installed has a VMWare Resolution Fix as an option, so that it's installed for you (if you choose) if you're installing on a VM.

    I like Linux and I've tried 100's of distro's throughout the years. And that is also the "problem" with Linux sometimes. Instead of seeing100's of peoples working together to make Linux better, you get 100's of peoples all trying to do the same thing. I mean seriously what's the point in having so many distro's while the only real differences are the way you install it, the themes and look & feel they give you and of course preinstalled packages. Somebody better work on a customization app for Linux so you can turn your distro into anything you want so peoples can use the time, money and energy on making Linux that good that every hardware vendor feels the need to ship Linux Drivers and software with their products. Right now I pay extra money for hardware that's fully supported on Windows, so I pay for Windows drivers and software while I use Linux. That aint right!
    I've been playing with Haiku lately, they finally have a fairly stable release and I am impressed.

    • @retrocomputeruser

      _" Instead of seeing100's of peoples working together to make Linux better, you get 100's of peoples all trying to do the same thing. I mean seriously what's the point in having so many distro's while the only real differences are the way you install it, the themes and look & feel they give you and of course preinstalled packages."_ . That alone is the reason why Windows users will hesitate to switch because they have too many distro forks which lead to confusion and unwanted stress. I started with Debian then switched to Arch once I got the feel.
      On the subject of drivers, I carefully chose hardware that was compatible with the Linux kernel or open source drivers was available. But I was only able to do that by building my own PC.

    • @nedegt1877
      @nedegt1877 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retrocomputeruser Let me put it this way. Most of what I said is about Desktop Linux. CLI Linux is great and is used in many many different ways. From embedded systems to super computers. Lot's of servers server services ( lol ) to Windows hosts. And that's all fine but when it comes to desktop systems the problems starts. Some software has been ported to Windows from Linux, that's true but in general software and hardware makers don't like the "Open Source" idea. They believe that Linux users aren't willing to pay for software or hardware support. I'd pay for *some* Linux software to support my hardware though.
      For example I have a Logitech fancy mouse with lots of buttons and options. I paid a lot for it and it has a very nice looking Windows interface to control every option. But on Linux I'm stuck to general mouse options. A newer kernel did give me a few more options and there is a "fan made" controller on Linux, but its far from the same thing or the nice looking Logitech App. So the more Desktop Linux users the bigger the chance hardware vendors will invest in control panels and proper drivers. Like AMD is doing. Heck even Microsoft has Linux apps that looks great and works great too. Like Edge and Visual Studio code.

    Have you looked at Haiku OS before? might be worth looking into since it shares the philosophy of Elementary OS / GNOME without using the Linux Kernel or being a Linux Distro and using BSD Drivers; it's essentially a modern drop-in replacement for BeOS (project started in ~2001) and it takes near seconds/minuets to install instead of >1hr like most other operating systems...

      Or gist/man pages of specific packages: kde, grub etc.

      You don't have to invest a lot of time.
      more importantly, when an error occurs, carefully observe the error messages, it's behavior and understand the context in which it occurs.
      So whether it is a problem of a program or a problem of the operating system itself. (How/when it happened and what you did last.)
      If you search for what you observed, you can quickly find really useful solutions.
      You'll find mostly console commands on the forums.
      This is mainly because they deliver the desired result, in an easily explainable and universal way.
      At this point, a small overview of basic console commands come in handy.
      To get a rough understanding, of what this command does and whether it is a viable solution to the current problem. (Luckily, they are pretty self-explanatory. Most of the time.)
      p.s I would describe myself as an experienced Linux user, about 7 years in use, but I'm still more of a GUI-based all-round (gaming, browsing, lil bit coding and tweaking 😅) user.
      I mainly use the console when it is necessary or when it is easier/faster to achieve the result.
