This was just great the two of them singing this catchy tune together. And one that makes a helluva a lot of sense at that. And god bless Bea she would such an advocate for my LGBTQ+ community. I hope her and Rock are having a blast together again in heaven.
This was pretty ahead of it's time! 😮 I mean, i can't imagine mainstream TV stars being allowed to sing about "poppers and speed" on PrimeTime TV today?!😂
It wasn't ahead of its time, it was of its time. The 70s were a freak show and mainstream culture was extremely loose about sex and drugs. No one watching this at the time would have batted an eye. I can easily imagine Betty watching this wearing her quilted housecoat and asking George to buy a bottle of poppers on his way home from work the next day so they could try it out. We're so much more uptight these days.
@jimp4170 well, yes, that is what I meant. We have regressed into hard-core Christian conservatism on mainstream TV now. I can't imagine Ryan Seacrest being allowed by the censors to sing a song about poppers and speed, and not be fired!
The lyrics are completely different and of course, they flipped the script. Here they're complaining that there's all this "new morality" where people do all these drugs (instead of "just" smoking a cigarette or having alcohol). The SNL characters are celebrating everyone doing drugs. And that's kind of the genius... like maybe the people in the SNL show used to sing more like this (and why Aidy's character didn't remember it being so hard)... but the actors fell into it too. Just one interpretation.
I know a bunch of people have commented that they changed it a lot, but I know what you mean. It's surprising that something this far back was still so up front about the drugs, right?👍✌
Right, I'm stunned that they are just so casually tossing out all those slang drug references, pretty surprised they even know all about those things, not sure why, I guess just never expected any of the golden girls to be druggies
@@metalmonkey6262 hahaha. So innocent. Bea Arthur was a legendary veteran of Broadway decades before the Golden Girls or before her show Maude. Broadway was far more free & easy than Hollywood & censorship was frowned upon. She would beard for a close friend in the era of SOCIETY. Rock's all boy pool parties were legendary. Gay discos sold amyl nitrate (poppers). People were doing all this stuff on dance floors & bathrooms before they even got to whatever party ...and there was always partying going on SOMEWHERE!!By the 80s the hit movie was AL Pacino in Cruising. Controversial/ scandalous/ iconic... he's given poppers on a dance floor. SEX, nudity & profanity were the big taboos on AMERICAN network TV. They still are to a great extent. In Canada it seems so strange when everyday words like shit or fuck get beeped or overdubbed. Bea ended her career touring her fabulous one woman show. I wonder if it's available. She was performing to sold out houses close to the end of her life so she must have had it recorded for posterity or to raise money posthumously for her foundations. XoXo
@@metalmonkey6262 I forget which musical that song is from. For the record: Bea Arthur was NOT a druggie. Rock Hudson was when he was partying & had his house full of partying male models (escorts)
The laugh when I realized they were serious here, as if people haven't been doing hard drugs for eons. When Bea and Rock were young, there were even hit pop songs like "Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs Murphy's Ovaltine?".
Let's not pretend these two have never dabbled in any drugs outside of alcohol. I'd like to think it's more tongue in cheek than straight up hypocrisy.
@@squirrelcovers6340 I don't KNOW that she wasn't gay but nobody on here KNOWS that she was either. She married two different men and never said she was gay even though she supported the gay community and worked in show biz where that is more accepted. So she probably wasn't gay.
SNL, thank you for bringing me to this truly odd cultural artifact.
SNL?
SNL is trash
@@wheels2fun526its garbage. Snl is for people without brains
😅@@wheels2fun526
Bea had her own one-off tv special. Not snl
SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE JUST DID A VERSION OF THIS LAST NIGHT!!! Cecily Strong looked like a young Bea Arthur!!!
yeah they're definitely out of ideas
@MIS315 😅
@MIS315 it was hilarious you dolt.
My life is better for having seen this video

He's certainly not in heaven!
Thanks podcast on the lanai - Golden Girls podcast for prompting me to see this
Bea Arthur was just genius ❤
This entire TV special was fabulous
Absolutely amazing, how doesn’t this have one trillion views ❤
Priceless. Love it.
This will be my new example to use when asked "Just what is gay culture" because this is a pretty good definition
LOVE IT. They're so missed ♥️♥️
I've watched this a million times because it is so surreal.
I come back and watch this at least once a month. This is such a great performance.

This is crazy, them calling out everything! I love it!
Wow, SNL barely even changed the song

Well, changed quite a bit actually.

Bea Arthur and Rock Hudson live at SNL
I just got the sheet music to this song (and the whole score to "I Love My Wife")!!!
THANKS. I couldn't remember which musical that was from. CheerZ
It's a terrific score with songs written in a wide variety of categories.
I'm kinda surprised simply naming so many recreational drugs was OK with the broadcast censors at the time.
Right, I'm stunned that they are just so casually tossing out all those slang drug references, pretty surprised they even know all about those things, not sure why, I guess just never expected any of the golden girls to be druggies
@@metalmonkey6262 All the sketches were written by scripts.
The song is from a Broadway show of the time called I Love my Wife.

And it's so hypocritical - alcohol has ruined exponentially times more lives than all the drugs they have named.

lol this is meant to be funny not serious
This is so great . Thanks 😘
You're welcome :)
I love this and SNL just did a bit on this on their last epsiode.
Love this!
This is amazing!
Love
Holy shit😍
"Rock, if you can't say anything constructive..." 🤣
Well, there's nothing gay to see here people, move along. Just two average law abiding heterosexuals! ✨
"Fudge, look what they're stuffin'.", and "Hold it ma, don't touch that muffin."??? Escandalo!!
How weird is this? Great stuff. Luv the seventies.
1980.
Rock had good pitch.
SNL 😀😘
How old are the writers on SNL that they referenced this???
This is gay camp. I'm telling you every gay SNL cast member and writer has this memorized.
Yeah this is camp. Plus bea and rock are kinda icons
I'm sending this to any conservative i can think of. Perfect.
yikes, that snl parody wasnt even a parody as much as a tribute
If he had only came out back then, so many lives could have been saved.😭😭😭😭
Considering the political climate of 1980, I imagine it would more likely would have instantly tanked his career and not much else.
who the hell names their kid amyl nitrate? 😂
It sounds like it could be a name: amyl sounds just like the name Emile.
And both gay but given the times both in the closet.
Had to be for your own survival...too bad. Just keeping that secret was a whole job 24/7 😢
