I see there’s a lot of back and forth on quality matters between the Honda and Briggs. Don’t get me wrong, I like Honda engines, very reliable for many years, but Honda has NOT made ANY improvements to that engine, or addressed the common issues it was having. On both Vanguard repower videos we’ve now done, both customers are more than satisfied with the Vanguard. Especially with the fact it warms up quick (Honda does NOT), the air filter plugging up often, and also the fuel getting into the gas. In my 40+ years of experience in this field, there’s always a company on top for awhile then someone else slips in for awhile so on and so forth. It’s a very competitive market. Like anything. It’s your job as a consumer to keep yourself informed and not just blindly stand behind something that isn’t what it used to be. And There, my friends, is a banquet Dinner. Thanks fer watchin.

When you're an international company like Honda making billions every year on parts, the old leadership in the company sticks to the old gravy train. The engineers do what they're told. Not talk about what they could improve.

Briggs has come a long way from the old L-head 5hp (with the hard to get to carb bolts) to what they offer today. Being a dealer for over 40yrs, I like brands that have good parts and warranty support, and Briggs has that.

Hey taryl, I'm having issues with my 3.5hp Briggs and stratton horizontal shaft engine. It only runs wide open, won't idle at all. Has the vacuum style carb I think, where the gas tank is bolted directly to the bottom of the carb. Also does not have a choke. I tried cleaning it and it still acted the same.

What Briggs did was took allllll the weak points to that Honda engine, and improved on it. All the issues the customer was having with the Honda engine were all the improvements that Briggs made. One was the plugging up of the air filter, another the long warm up time (running the motor on half choke for 5 mins) and adding that integrated engine stop/fuel shutoff to keep the gas from entering the crank case. Briggs is so confident of this engine they give you a 3 year warranty (even under commercial use). As far as being a “sellout”, we are a Briggs dealer not Honda. Still waiting on that large check from Briggs that I don’t see coming anytime soon. Thanks fer watching. Now There’s Your Dinner!!

What did the air filter look like? I'm thinking that since it's covered with cement dust...another possibility would be that the air filter had a hole or didn't seal well, letting lots of concrete dust into the engine which is absolutely like sand paper to the cylinder bore... Or, maybe it had a paper air filter and the air filter got wet and disintegrated? I was always under the impression that the Honda's were bulletproof? What make the Briggs a better engine?

This happens so much with these plate tamps. If you don’t use water while using these machines they will generate a lot of dust. Guarantee that machine’s air filter got clogged with dust that the guys using most likely removed the filter. This will destroy the piston rings and eat at the cylinder walls. Combined with your original diagnosis of oil and gas mix then add dust.
Ask any equipment rental place, these machines are often returned with the air filter that has been removed or tampered with.

And no matter what engine you buy they will leak fuel into the cylinder if you don't turn the gas. And before you say it I know the briggs has an auto fuel shut off and thats nice but I still wouldnt buy one cause turning off the fuel valve is an easy 2 second step to do when your done using the piece of equipment and you wouldn't have to replace the engine every few years.

When he's talking about gas getting the crank case from vibration is why you should check the oil before every use of small engine equipment. I know no one does, but could save you some big $$$.
Also should turn the gas off when transporting small engines. Just imagine that carb float bouncing up and down with the trailer letting all that extra gas pass by. Depending on the engine, the extra gas is going right to the crank case.

That wacker will never do its job again like it used to with the Honda 😆😂 poor little wacker what did it ever do to you guys. You are correct about the needle leaking fuel into the crankcase I believe, it is very common for the Honda’s to leak in that way. If used in a commercial environment it pays to put a new carburetraaaator on OEM about ever other year or so. It’s hard to know for sure though how much use they actually got out of it. Customers always tend to think that they take care of their equipment even when they don’t. Who knows could have never had the oil changed since new also and from the looks of it could be some dirt ingestion too. I can tell you for a fact it’s not easy to wear one of the commercial Honda’s out that they can take a lot of abuse even after years of use.

I hope that air cleaner on the Briggs does a good job, those compactors make and run in their own cloud of dust. Most engines can’t take the abuse those machines put out.

it should.. in the minning industry every engine and even Hvac filters are of a cyclonic design as it last longer between service intervals.. B&S was smart in implementing it on small engines

The main issue is not the motor here. It is the fact that the application is too tough for an ordinary motor ,or engine, it is that these motors were not designed for the thumping a vibrating compactor will make them suffer. Perhaps a two stroke would be better as it would not matter if petrol mix leaked into the crank case.

No mention online where the small engines are made. I assume China since the competition is so fierce. The Vanguard twin engine are made in the USA (says Briggs website). What do you think of Subaru engines? I have a OHC 14hp on my push blower (they are all made in Japan).

I’ve got a 6hp Robin/Subaru on a walk behind. Full pressure lube system with spin on oil filter. Hard as hell to get started cold and it’s been like that since new. Several other guys I know say theirs fire right up cold but mine never has. It’s never used a drop of oil and runs quiet & smooth. I just wish mine pull started cold easier.

ANYBODY got a quick fix for a deck belt tension idler spring that the hook has been broken off? I have replaced 3 on my Snapper LTH 48" cut, ( 2 in one day ) obvious weakness @ the bend location, anybody have success in welding like a heavy duty washer or something in place of the hook?

I think I'm better off sticking with the Briggs & Stratton engine, my 1988 model 3 horsepower push mower looks like it's due for new rings, I mean,it's just starting to burn oil under full acceleration & it's hard to start.
Briggs & Stratton don't release official compression figures rather preferring a leakdown test for diagnosis of burning oil & hard starting.
The problem is they say not to hone the cylinder when fitting the chrome faced rings, I thought the idea of honing was to allow the oil to flow back down the cylinder wall instead of the glazed bore causing the oil to pool inside of the cylinder.
Someone did the same thing to a Honda mower engine & it burned oil, they didn't hone the cylinder, my problem is with Hondas instructions for testing a GSV190 engines compression.
Since it runs a decompression camshaft, they say the compression should test at 71 PSI which my dads mower does, its problem is oil burning on startup & hard starting.
I gave the cylinder a couple of squirts of oil & it went up to 100 PSI, the engine started the first pull so it has to be rings which I bought for it.
I want to buy a leakdown tester & test it before I tear it down just out of interest, I want to test my 3 HP Briggs mowers engine as well !

A standard classic briggs flathead has an aluminum alloy cylinder bore . Most newer engines have an iron cylinder liner . The old industrial commercial series flatheads had iron cylinder liner and replacable bronze main bearing and valve guides . Som had ball bearing mains

I need some Help ! I bought a used riding mower $50 at a yard sale. Briggs 17 twin. New items I have put on, Battery, coil, air filter, plugs, gas filter, and oil. Had the carb rebuilt an put in new reg. fresh gas. Starts up an runs great. Seems to have plenty of power. But if it stalls or I turn it off it will not start. Seems to spin over alright. After it cools off it will start up an run again.

Good fix on the engine replacement. I have concrete guys calling ever so often when their saw dies. No filter on it, not even for the workers. They’re all Stihl, I pass, tell the to take it to Stihl dealer. They’re not maintaining the motor, in 4 months , it’d be back. No thanks.

I reckon that Briggs will rattle itself to bits, more oil caps to loose, I reckon the dipstick will shoot out after all the vibration
Wacker plates /. construction equipment is abused and works in the harshest of conditions
Maybe if the operator was shown to check the oil and isolate the fuel and check for excessive oil on stick ( fuel within) maybe just maybe and engine could be saved
I cannot wait for the follow up for the fertiliser spreader... think it would have been better to service the Honda and fit a new carb and maybe check the ignition coil
The wet clutch reduction gearbox is there for a reason ... that wacker type clutch will struggle in certain inclines
