Oh if I could just go sit at a table at Granny's Dinner Theater in Dallas Texas and hear Marty Robins sing just one more time. He was such a good singer and loved to sing and entertain his fans. I think Marty would have stayed till the following day after a performance that probably lasted far longer than for what he got paid any way just to say "hello" to his fans and sign autographs. I have the picture of him kneeling by his race car that he signed for me and after sneaking back stage at a performance he did when Tom Paul and the Glaser Bros sang with him at a concert with other country artist as well at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas and got all their autugraphs. To just a little girl in about the 7th grade I was a Marty Robins fan from that night forward. He will always be missed.

Oh wow that’s a great story. I would have loved to meet him. Had I known he was at the hotel within 5 miles from me I would have begged my parents to take me and being fans, they would have. In ‘82 I was 11 years old. Thanks for sharing your story 😀

Marty Robbins actually saved Richard Childress life back in the day and Childress credits him for that, Childress wrecked and Marty was headed right for his driver's door head on and Marty chose rather than hit Childress car which would have likely killed Childress with the 160mph impact to turn his car straight into the wall and take the blunt of it himself, The guy isn't just a country music hero and legend he is a Nascar hero and an even greater person I hear lots of people speak highly of Marty Robbins not just on his great singing but for his character alone

Ahhhh. back when country music and NASCAR both were great!! How far they both have fallen. I love Marty Robbins. Incidentally, many country fans might be interested to know that the Grateful Dead (who could be considered an amazing country band for a brief time with their flirtations with it in the 1970s) covered El Paso on a fairly regular basis. Cool interview!!

Cool, I didn't realize they covered that song. I'll have to check it out. I like them also. Marty is an All time favorite of mine. I ask all of my guests about him if I knew they were around before 82. I agree Nascar and Country music have made changes that caused their loss of so many loyal fans. I love the history and the people that built both. Thanks for watching and commenting. RacingRoutes.com coming soon, I'll be posting alot of history there

I always ask for a Marty Robbins story from my guests that were around NASCAR in the 70’s and early 80’s. I learned his music from my Dad who was a truck driver and had many cassette tapes. Thank you for commenting

I do love some Marty Robbins stories. I can’t believe I was that close to where he would stay and didn’t know it.

I don't know how true this is, but, I read somewhere Marty Robbins kept making records to fund his racing. The man obviously had a passion for racing. Pretty cool!

I haven’t heard that but it does make sense. I always have to ask guests if they have a Marty Robbins story.
