- In 1981, Donnie Allison was in a wreck that left him in the hospital with a head injury and much more. He also tells Dale Jr and Mike Davis about visiting his brother Bobby Allison in the hospital after a wreck that many didn't think he would pull through.

These guys were tough.
I spent some time with Donnie at Charlotte in the early 80s . I didn’t have credentials or a pit pass on a Saturday before the Bush race . I was there with some friends that used to handle Toro mowing equipment and they were meeting wit Humpy and Bruton about giving the pole winner a mower so they handed me off to Donnie . He said come on big boy your my body guard and like magic he walked right into garage where he stopped and talked to all the drivers in there . Even Dale sr. I left there that day and felt like one of the family and that was exactly what the garage was a family. Ordinary guys with extraordinary talent. I love them all !

Bobby , Donnie, Eddie Allison are the folks that console my uncle Sam Sommers after don mactavish tragedy at Daytona. Years ago.. tough good people who have lived through some terrible tragedy's in life.
@craigparrish3582 I loved watching your Uncle Sam Sommers race every Thursday night at The Old Columbia Speedway in Cayce South Carolina. He was a great race car driver and he was spirited when someone raced him a bit too hard because he would rub them or bump them right back. One night, I wish I could remember who made him really mad and he stopped in turn 3 at an angel where no one could go right in front of the driver he was upset at and he went to the driver's side and got in a few good licks and we in the pits/ infield area and in the stands got our money's worth that night. There wasn't a person young or old that wasn't cheering at the top of their lungs 😂😂PRICELESS TREASURED MEMORIES 🏁🏆🏁 BEST CHILDHOOD EVER AND BACK THEN YOU COULD MIX AND MINGLE WITH EVERY RACE CAR DRIVER THERE AS LONG AS THEY WEREN'T WORKING ON THEIR CAR. SAM SOMMERS, RALPH EARNHARDT, TINY LUND, NED JARRETT, BUCK BAKER, LEE PETTY AND SO MANY MORE. One of my favorite things about "Becoming Earnhardt" is that Dale not only has emphasis on his father, but not just that, it's an inside story of the sport back then. As crazy as it is today, it was incredibly spirited and nuanced back then. The people in the sport were characters of an almost forgotten time. It's important we remember where we came from. We learn from our past. The story being told is an incredible one, and I can't wait for ep. 4!
You belonged in a top car. Loved seeing you race. There is nothing like the old racing stories. Whether it is you, Ned Jarret, Richard Petty etc. all y'all are PRICELESS.
As a lil boy i got to watch the 79 Daytona 500 Live i was so happy i got to see the 1st whole race live! Will never forget it because i was pulling for cale an got mad when the brothers was gonna tag team an whip his ass which cale deserved. Wound up being a Davey Allison fan when he finished second to his dad. Broke my heart when davey died. Alabama gang the best this sport ever Had!
I love the old school guys. The Allison’s were true race car drivers. That’s all the Allison’s. Tuff as nails.
Donnie could sure get around Palm Beach Fairgrounds Speedway. He did better than any of the other NASCAR drivers who tried to outrun the legends who ran there weekly....Crowe, Brack, Balough, Tissot, Anderson, Connors....there were so many great drivers who ran there. GOD BLESS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

From the 1st time I watched Bobby race at Heidelberg Raceway in the mid 60s he was my hero. He still is a hero to me today.

I saw Bobby at the Charlotte Auto Fair earlier this year. I wasn't sure what to expect, but other than his voice being low and quiet, he still seemed sharp. I have a lot of autographs from my racing heroes, and I treasure his as much as anyone. I'd sure like to meet Donnie some day.

I was there too. Im from Alabama and was wearing an Alabama Crimson Tide. He noticed that and gave me a "ROLL TIDE!!"
Not many families have given as much to automobile racing as the Allisons. And the worst ass-whipping I ever got was when I tried to break up a fight between 2 brothers.

We use to go to Huts and Pams barn for New Years party. They had music and all and Bobby would always be up there dancing on the stage. Every one of them are so super nice.
I met Donnie and Bobby over the years. They were ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Hey love all the drivers and your DAD I have been watching racing for years and I have been to a couple in North Carolina. Dale the 79 rebel race showed how many GODS of the sport were putting there lives on the line. Hey I loved SENNA F1 driver and I still cry today looking at some stuff on UTUBE but I appreciate you trying to keep the sport alive. Hey no disrespect I don’t have much time for it now because to me being born in 1966 this was the days that we as human beings were going through the best times in my mind. I know we had wars but I think racing helped me get through the troubled times that we were going through. Dale I appreciate your support and hope your pod cast last as long as possible . Greenville North Carolina Bess you and your family be safe and stay strong and enjoy your family. Hey I have always tried to be myself and honest about life . That’s how I was raised in life and I’m trying to get through this day and age????

Sure they do- you just haven’t met them. Racing ain’t about performance anymore, like in kenny wallace’s interview with KB: it’s about who brings the money. So the ‘natural risers’ aren’t the same pool anymore.

Donnie skipped ahead several years telling of driving son Kenny's Busch series car. BEFORE that, like about 1982 Donnie was running a plain #1 All Pro car at BIR (Birmingham). He was sponsered by a chiropractor. He was GREAT in that car & one night there at BIR he finished a very close, hard fought 2nd place to Rusty Wallace i think.

Donnie Alison never gave up in from horrible wreck in 81 but all Alison race car drivers where tough men & still sad what happened to Davey Allison in 93 past away from helicopter crash.
Sir I’m trying to say I think it’s going to come out about the 79 race. Dale is trying to do something for the fans and I don’t think it’s going to come court. I’m 57 and I’m retired from Gregory Poole and I’m trying to look at what Dale is doing and I don’t care about who’s fault it is. I loved Cale and talked to him and Donnie .
