You missed the actual worst consul atleast to me; Consul L. He appears in Eunie’s side story alongside X and literally has no lines of dialogue because X tells him not to talk, he exists purely for a boss fight.

L was a Xenoblade X reference. The fact that he was placed under Consul X proves this. I'm like 99% sure him not speaking was Takahashi's way of giving us a tongue-in-cheek "isn't it funny how X isn't referenced here at all? Curious..."

While Ashera is batsh*t insane there is a good reason for it. Just like Eunie she remeber her death. Her death was her homecoming back when homecoming was just a decapitation. That trauma is what makes her so crazy.

    • @krimsonkatt

That's not entirely accurate. In every one of her incarnations an extremely painful scar appears on her neck (which was from her first death) around her 9th term. She then starts getting memories of all her past incarnations most notably all the times she's died. The pain then gets progressively worse and worse slowly driving her insane until she breaks from the pain, goes on a bloody uncontrollable rampage, and is put down by her own soldiers.

I think you started making this video before trying to truly understand the characters.
D was exactly like Joran but instead of focusing on the many times he died he chose to focus on that one time he was a badass and killed many and made that his whole character. Hes literally a more hardcore pyschotic Mumkhar.
Joran was never given the chance to have self worth in the world which is his message. It's proof that this world is corrupt and unfair even to Joran who turned mobieus. He can't do the things he wants like Shania. He's forced to be something he doesn't want to or isn't even skilled at.
Shania wants to live infinite smaller lives that give her more fulfillment than one big life with regret. She's traumatized and hates every aspect of her life she just wants to restart.
Mobieus is a deep concept. They are the AI but everyone was scared of the uncertain future of whether they'll live or not. This concept resides in everyone so the world was put in an endless stasis. In the final cutscene even the main protagonists and players want the "endless now". Yet they know they can't have it for the sake of the world and each owns personal growth.
Crys I'm not sure if this is exact but I think he became mobieus simply to find a way oit of the cycle which is why he doesn't do much.
Yeah the mobieus are goofy at times but also most of theme are delegated go side quests.

    Just a few scattered thoughts:
    1. Ghondor sucks.
    2. Melia and Nia are the best and their interaction where Melia tells Nia to drop the posh act is great, I'd love to see more scenes between them (for the description, I do like Nia just a smidge more, but they're my two favorite in the franchise by far). Unfortunately, I wish the game explored more of how they feel about this world and what happened to them and their friends. Or explored f*cking anything about the backstory but instead that'll probably be paid DLC because that's satisfying, right?
    3. Moebius are awful, with a few exceptions.
    4. I can't disagree more about the point between Lanz/Joran and Eunie/Dirk. Everything we know about Lanz, who he is, and how he conducts himself is informed by Joran's sacrifice. He bulked up, trains everyday to become the best defender he can so that he can protect those he loves, so that the Joran situation never happens again. And if that means he's gonna get his hands dirty by killing others, then he will. This caused some nice character conflict at the end of Chapter 1 between him and Noah and that was neat. The end of Chapter 3 also had a neat enough scene touching on how Lanz felt about the situation and he brings up Joran A TON (like when he talked to Mio). What does Dirk killing Eunie in a previous life even do for her? She ends up with the conclusion that "my past self doesn't define me" when she stands up to Dirk in Chapter 4 but like, when was that a conflict for her? And when did they touch on anything about that outside of scenes with Dirk in it or that one scene in Chapter 3 that jumpstarts it? I honestly found Eunie's development in this game to just be a neat thing about her, rather than explaining everything we know about who she is. Ashera is honestly a much better executed version of Eunie's story.
    5. Crys, X, and Y are so underused it's laughable. They're so important to the story and world but damn you coulda fooled me with how little they're actually involved.
    6. I actually believe that Z is the worst written character in the franchise, he's just super incompetent. Why do you have least 20ish Moebius but never use most of them and only send two at a time to fight the party? If your goal is to protect the endless now, which you can only preserve by having Melia captured, then WHY would you send N (who already lost to the party) by himself to make sure she doesn't get freed? Why not send X and Y? WHY NOT GO YOURSELF? Why do you have eyes all over Aionios and never stop the party? Or is it that you just want to be entertained you absolute baffoon? Cause if that's the case, you can only do that if Melia isn't freed. So, making sure she doesn't get freed should be priority number 1. I would assume if Pyra, Mythra, and Dromarch are dead, that a Moebius had to have killed them, which could only happen by shattering their core crystal. To me then, this would imply that of any Moebius, Z should know about Core Crystals. So then, why did you not tell Dirk how they work when you sent him to kill Nia?? Most of this game can only happen because Z is such a f*cking idiot, yet somehow beat the parties of 1 and 2 in early Aionios, captured Melia (f*cking somehow), and forced Nia into hiding. I really feel like most of the major issues of this game come down to Z's sh*t writing.
    7. I have not played Persona, but based on what I played in this game, I doubt your take is at all incorrect. I can't imagine that game handled that concept worse than this game.

  • @shiromatsunoki
    @shiromatsunoki ปีที่แล้ว +94

I think the idea of Z is interesting, but the execution definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Because like you said in the video itself, Persona used this same idea of a "personified concept" and pulled it off with flying colors. Hopefully the DLC gives us a better villain or somehow improves Z to the point he's salvaged and retroactively made a decent villain.

    • @Castersvarog
      @Castersvarog ปีที่แล้ว +7

I heard someone bring up how Z (and by proxy X and Y), should have taken inspiration from Xenosaga and U-DO, being a being from another higher dimension connected via the Zohar/Conduit forced into our own dimension. Which would better explain his motivations despite being mankind’s will for a forever now and tie back together with the previous two games via the Conduit
And given how the concept art has the inside of Origin be stuffed with Conduits I wonder if this was the original plan but got cut or changed for time

    • @kyurei4478
      @kyurei4478 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    • @turinmormegil7715

I didn't mind him that much. I don't mind a villain to hate, not everyone must be layered and filled with backstory, motives and etc. And I think he fits his job pretty well since the whole last segment is more of a life lesson against what Zed represents. My only issue with him is how they shrug how NOW he is defeated. Like, they said he was fought thousands of times before, always won cuz he is basically Admin of the world, omniscient and allmighty. But now he lost? Like, "oh Ouroboros is a Power from outside the world and thus out of his Control". But N and M were Ouroboros, the first in fact. Why did they lose then? I just hate when games or stories estabilish mechanics and system as vital and central parts of the plot to explain why u Lost, but then forget them when you Win. And what is Lucky seven? Why N had it too?
Like, in XC 2 you lose to Jin and Malos cuz although Mythra is the master Blade, Rex hadnt yet awoken her True potential. Reason why Pneuma wins, and cuz it draws from the conduit, which basically weaponizes "Power of Will, of imagination, and of I want I want I want so I can" (basically Power of friendship or Plot Armor but at least has an explanation why It works and how a mechanism/gimmick/gizmo/Magic/scientific mambojambo, the sudden change in the Will of force as now being on my side, backs It). And, although Malos should be equally powerful and a master Blade as well, he didn't have a connection to his driver like Mythra to awake his power and direct It correctly (hence why the call it drivers, Duh), and his driver died before Nós final defeat too, so...eh. That's the end of that?
And back in XC 1 you Win the final victory cuz the world's antivirus AI (Alvis) looks at Zanza and goes "snap, you Lost your admin an all powerful udefeatable god privileges cuz screw you, I like your other self Shulk best now".
      But here it's just....you Win....yeaaay?

    XB3 MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SHANIA
Unfortunately I have to disagree with your analysis of Shania as a character, I feel like this video dismisses a significant amount of information that frames who she is
Her life is horrendously stressful, she - like the others - is a child soldier, but she knows of life outside the war against Moebius. Due to her family name she feels the weight of upholding said family name despite her interests lying elsewhere (her art), her mother constantly berates her and she has no other family, all of them dying in the line of duty. The only real friend we see that she has in Ghondor is constantly framed as an obstacle by Shania's mother due to Ghondor being of the Vandham family. Ghondor constantly outperforming her leads to her inferiority complex and her subsequent attempts to emulate Ghondor much to Ghondors frustration stem from that desire to be 'equal' to her. Ghondor is incredibly harsh on her over this but it doesn't stem from a disdain for Shania as we see she takes a genuine interest in her art during the flashback in Sena's side story
Shania knows that the Kevesi and Agnus soldiers will be reborn if they die, she feels powerless because of the aforementioned inferiority complex and the constant threat of permanent death. Shania functions really well as a foil to the main parties beliefs, in which they are constantly seeking out the 'Real' way to live, Shania helps to propose the question of what it really means to 'Live.' The stress of the world constantly weights down on her and while what she did was horrible, in selling out the city, it didn't prompt me to hate her. She took her own life in a desperate attempt for a second chance: "This only the beginning!"
Not to mention Sena's Side Story allowing us to further solidify the parties understanding of life and family, that not all parents love their children, that families aren't perfect, that the warmth parents feel for their newborns doesn't always last. But thanks to Monicas reassurance the party, and Sena primarily are reassured that isn't all a lie, but a personal choice to maintain that love as a a parent
Shania is an incredibly tragic character, her attempts to escape that fear of death leading to her becoming Moebius and becoming one of the few characters who end up dying permanently, Shania did abhorrent things but she was still a victim of circumstance, that doesn't excuse her actions but it allows us to sympathise with her. In death she finally had the total acceptance of the one person we know she could call a friend, acceptance from a person who had no expectations or held any judgement towards her but it was far too late to save her
I think Shania does such an incredible job at furthering the themes of XB3 and doesn't bring down any of characters around her, instead serving to enrich everyone she interacts with. The Ghondor and Monica dynamic, the cruelty of the Flame Clock system and introducing the idea that there isn't any one way to live, and further enforcing and adding depth to the motivation of the main 6.
While I enjoyed listening to your perspective I felt this video was overly harsh on many of the characters and failed to take into account the perspective of their individual motives, resulting in it being a bit reductive in its criticism
thank you very much if you read this, i know its a bit wordy and i may not have agreed with much of what you said but i still enjoyed watching the video

I think Shania isnt necessarily a bad character, but instead a character with waisted potential. I do find it interesting having a character that prefers the idea of living multiple lives to get more opportunities to live instead of living a longe life as a whole. A lot of people do think this way in our world, where we don't know what is there after death, and in a world where people know there are ones who live a single full life, and others who live infinite short lifes, it would be plausible that someone would wonder if It would be better to live multiple lives, especially Shania, someone who didn't get the opportunity to do what she actually aspired to do in life.
Shania does mention that the life the party aspires has its own flaws, and that living like they do would be much better. Of course she isnt taking into account having to go to war multiple times and more than likely not even living the full ten years, but she just thinks "oh well, I can die, but thats no biggie, will just be born again later."
That dilema that is kind of interesting, all be it with its own flaws, is completely thrown off the window when Shania turns into Moebius, and suddenly just opts for one eternal life, and first thing she wants is Just, revenge on everyone on the city for the lols. I think It would have been much better If the party found her living in a New colony in her younger "newborn out of the cradle" stage, Just like Nimue or Ethel, and be in Ghondor ascension's Quest instead of Sena's. It would also be much better for her character if the game showed X convincing Shania to side with Moebius at the very begining of the game, to show how a Shania already affected by her past abuse of her mother and Ghondor, would be easily persuaded by X, especially by How her perception of life is.
A positive for Shania however, is just like with Isurd, her VA was top notch, and that also helped enhance her character a bit. I agree that she is much better than X, Y and Z, to some of the heros to some extent, and imo better than Ghondor, but she also could haver been a much better character overall.
Edit: For the question of the description, Nia > Melia, anyday

Honestly, the only thing I don't like about this game is that most of the other villains' potentials are wasted. A good majority of them are made pretty one-dimensional, and it's honestly kinda sad considering how much more aspects the writers could've added for all of them. Like X's send off felt so casual cause I don't think we dived deep enough into her character, and they also didn't even give her death cutscene like the others 🙁.

I mean Shania makes some sense as she's afraid of only having one chance at life and wasting it and both becoming an Agnian/Kevesi soldier or a Moebius she could avoid that fate either by either by living an endless cycling life as a soldier or the endless now of a Moebius however in spite of what she says and how much she hates the world she's unable to bring herself to destroy anything herself, for all her on screen appearances she never kills anyone even when she has the opportunity to do so not even her crappy mother and I think all of Shania's actions are motivated by a desire for power and control, like Joran she's a weak person thrust into an endless war with no control over her life nor the power to take control of it.
Edit: The meaning of Joran's death after becoming Moebius isn't that "his only value is in sacrificing himself" it's that Aionios is so screwed up with this endless war that someone like Joran has no other option, that the only smile Joran can choose is the content smile of a noble sacrifice and that's why Noah and the others HAVE to change it so people like Joran aren't forced to make such choices.
Edit2: Z's motivation is that he's the collective fears of everyone contained within Origin specifically the fear of the future, of uncertainty, so he takes control of Origin to create Aionios an eternal world to perpetuate an "endless now" creating Moebius to live forever if they feed off of the endlessly recycled lives of Angus and Keves or at least that's what would have happened if Nia didn't intervene creating the Ouroboros Stone and giving people the ability to fight back against Moebius eventually leading to people splitting off from the endless cycle and creating new lives outside of the cycle of rebirth that Agnus and Keves are stuck in those lives eventually created the City and the Lost Numbers.

Well Xenoblade 3 does leave a couple things unanswered and I do admit after the beginning of chapter 6 and parts of chapter 7 aren’t amazing. I still love this game more than 1 & 2 bc I actually felt a lot of connection with the world and the characters. While I do think the side stories probably should’ve been in the main story and X & Y should’ve had death scenes. I felt better playing 3 than the others bc the quests are good. And really I think we need to wait for the dlc to understand more, Ino already brought basically XC2 whole concept alone. Also, I feel unlike Torna the dlc story is going to be a fleshed out story. Torna at its core isn’t actually much until the side quests which is kinda filler for the world building

While I do think that she could've used more backstory, and initially I did hate her and Ghondor for a bit, I think that the story for me personally is kinda just sad. Not getting that acceptance from a parent after giving your everything can be really heartbreaking and I can see it driving someone insane especially since you have Ghondor constantly telling her off and no one to help with the context of the cutscenes shown. Me personally, I kinda just look at Shania as someone who didn't have someone like Noah or Mio and desperately wanted to make way for herself, but just didn't know how or didn't have the circumstance to.

I like the theory that Moebius were made intentionally disposable by Monolith to combat the criticism of XC2, where you win the battle but lose in the cutscene. (A criticism I think is way overblown) Considering this game directly addresses XC2's issues (Heroes instead of Blades) it does make some sense. I just don't think we needed 25 of them. You completely misunderstood the point of Joran's sacrifice. Sure a pretty big aspect of his character was wanting to be the main character but he was also genuinely a good friend and cared for his friends's lives likely more than his own. His initial sacrifice was a show of that selflessness as well as showing his perceived disposability, and develops Noah and Lanz. When he turned into moebius, he was showed all his past deaths where he died as a result of being left behind or betrayed by his "allies" and that broke his spirit almost irreparably after discovering despite his kindness, he was destined to be left behind by his allies, and that lead him to believe the kevesi ouroboros, the people whom he had first died for, would have done the same later on, devolving him into insanity and cementing his shift to evil.
His sacrifice doesn't show you how "if you're not the main character, you should die!", it is meant to show how if you choose or are made to associate with the wrong people who treat you as a tool, they will throw you under the bus any chance they get, and despite how broken and maddened you might be and what actions you have been manipulated into doing and how badly you may have been hurt, it's not too late to atone and do the right thing and stand up to the people who had wronged you and effectively return to the people who actually did support you.
Would it have been nice for joran to have a proper redemption arc instead of a sacrifice? Yeah, but with the circumstances of the cutscene where it happened, it would have been hard for it to take place any other way and had D not force fused with him, joran would have probably been more than happy to pull a triton and join the party against his own ilk.

I think X and Y just need more damn (worthwhile) screen time. Z could have been a much better villain if he had X and Y supporting him. Malos wasn't great by himself, neither is any fantastic villain. They need support like Torna, Amalthus, and even the Architect for Malos, whether they are on his side or not. I really hope they somehow use the DLC to flesh those 2 out, maybe using Moebius A, which could then make Z a better character. I think there's a lot of subtext and really meta ideas that you could use to see Z in a different light, whether they were intended to or not, but the Moebius trinity weren't given enough proper screen time to be good villains, especially Y. Also yes why don't X and Y have proper cutscenes for when you beat them in origin and why isn't the X fight mandatory? Overall I actually do think most Moebius are really good, they just don't have the immediate impact of other villains, especially for Xeno.

    • @krimsonkatt
      @krimsonkatt ปีที่แล้ว +1

The X fight in Origin isn't mandatory because the devs didn't want to make any sidequest misable. It's very possible that you could do all of Origin up to the final boss and still not have done Eunie's Sidestory where X plays a major role. If X was canonicly dead by then it would cause plot inconsistencies so the devs either had to make an alternate version of Eunie's sidestory or only have X appear in Origin after Eunie's sidestory was complete. Because if Eunie's sidestory was misable then you would perminantly miss out on certain arts and skills since you could never level up Medic Gunner beyond Lv10.

He also comes back to life way too many times and causes way too much trouble than a one-dimensional character is worth. I personally thought the moebius as a whole was a really interesting idea with plenty of depth. Also they fit the games message and it's theming perfectly. I also think they get more interesting the more you think about them. I do think plenty of them had wasted potential, but I think that the villains in xenoblade 1 had a lot of wasted potential as well. Overall I'd say that the villains in 3 were about as good as in 1, but not as good as in 2. I thought both 1 and 3 had a few good villains and the rest were pretty mediocre or sometimes even bad. Though I think N is better than any villain in 1, while 3 had a higher amount of mediocre villains.
Honestly for me this games' story gets better the more you think about it. Some aspects I initially didn't like that much, I now appreciate more. Also I really don't agree on your opinion of the lore in the game. I thought the world building with all the side content was easily the best in the series. Also instead of explaining things through exposition, this time around a lot of the details about the world are left for the player to discover for themselves through different clues. The details and explanations are there, they're just a lot easier to miss. I actually like this, but I get that it's not a type of storytelling that's for everyone.
I personally think this story is just as good as 1 (for different reasons), and slightly better than 2. I think it has one of the best stories I've ever seen, even with some of the faults it has (every story I've ever seen I can point at least a couple major flaws in). I respect the fuck outta your Noah simping (seriously, it makes me feel so fucking seen and I really needed that today,) but I honestly gotta disagree with you on a lot of these points. Not all, but a lot of them. I will say that much of the themes and plot points are subtler/rely more on implication than explicit confirmation than previous entries in the series, and a more linear experience with more explicit exposition and further character development would GREATLY improve things, but I don't think most of these characters you criticized are as bad as you make them out to be.
Take Joran, for example - I firmly disagree with the message of his character being one that condones valuing the "weaklings" only by their contibution to and sacrifice for their "betters," but an explicit condemnation of systems that force this very mindset. The point of Joran isn't that he redeems himself in his self-sacrifice, but that Aionios is a messed up place for forcing him into a position where that was the only smile he could choose. Noah says as much himself in reference to the decisions of self-sacrifice he and other characters had been forced to make up to that point at the beginning of Chapter 6.
It's fucked up that the world of Aionios forces people into a society where only strength and violence is valued as a matter of necessity, and many characters embody different ways in which this kind of world can break a person.
Joran, an artist who could never fight to save his life, but whose selfless and caring nature, along with his passion and artistic talent could allow him to thrive anywhere BUT Aionios as a beloved artist and the soul of a community, forced into meaningless death again and again until he finally manages to find meaning only in self-sacrifice, then immediately warped into a sadistic pawn by the memories of his suffering, a taste of power he'd been denied through millennia of endless death, and the toxic influence of Moebius.
Crys, a musician and a compassionate individual who was able to survive and bring a great deal of comfort and solace to the people around him, but whom ultimately was driven to despair and suicide by the sheer pointlessness of the violence the world around him was forced to participate in. For all the comfort he could bring to others, in this sick and twisted world of Aionios with no hope of change, the one person he could not save from despair was himself. When he was granted the knowledge of Moebius after he finally fell so deep into despair that he killed himself, he was paralyzed by the grim reality that even victory over Aionios's wickedness could just result in yet more meaningless death, only this time permanent for all. He was able to escape this despair with a faint, tired sense of hope only upon seeing the courage and conviction of Noah and the others. A courage and conviction he could no longer muster after all the years for which Aionios had drained him of his very soul. He was not weak in the traditional sense, but his potential and value was still forcibly stripped from him by a world that allowed for nothing but violence. His empathy and compassion was turned into a weight that destroyed him.
Shania had some support in her life, yes, but every person who was truly kind to her eventually died or drifted away. And as someone who has experienced parental abuse like what Shania's mother did to her from a very young age, the effect it can have on you is greater than you think. While I obviously turned out fine and don't wanna kill everyone on Earth for a twisted form of immortality, it's not entirely unreasonable that someone in Shania's circumstances would snap. While there were people who supported her, speaking from experience... she couldn't see it. When you try, fail, and try again, over and over and over, and no matter how far you come the person who is supposed to matter most, who was supposed to love and care for you, guide you through life and protect you from harm, dismisses you as a failure, subjects you to that kind of verbal, psychological, and emotional abuse again, and again, and again, it becomes like a haze on your mind. You can't see the kind intentions in others anymore. You can't see the tough love encouragement of a well-meaning friend as a push towards something that will make you happier, but only as yet another condemnation of you as a person. Yet another piece of evidence that you're worthless. Especially if you look up to them. And the kindness of strangers - and I cannot stress this enough, especially at a young age - just seems like a facade. You think "Oh, they're just being polite because they're good people. In reality they hate me, and are well aware of how worthless I am." And when you meet someone who genuinely IS two-faced and smiles at you while judging your every move - as we do, since our narcissistic parents inevitably attract more people like themselves into our lives - it only reinforces this perception. Kindness becomes a lie and cruelty the only truth. So you feel you need to prove yourself to cruelty, and earn its approval. And it never comes. Even if you can occasionally see a genuine show of kindness for what it really is, it's only a tiny glimmer of hope in the darkness. In the *constant* agony. And then it's gone. And then your abuser comes in and compares you to the few people you idolized and uses the high esteem you held them in to once again make you feel like trash. Remember, we only got a GLIMPSE into what Shania's mother did to her. Trust me when I say that that kind of behavior is only the tip of the iceberg with those kinds of people. And in Aionios, violence is still more highly prized as a valuable skill even within the City - and even those who don't want to take part in the fighting and don't value it still would show indirect hostility to Shania simply by virtue of her position in the Lost Numbers. To her, life was miserable and she was never good enough. To be given endless chances, to try again and again, and on top of all that, to be able to *forget?* Of course she would take that deal. She was driven to the brink. She knew firsthand that the ideal the Lost Numbers fought for wouldn't even bring about utopia - people like her would still be victimized by people like her mother all the same, and would oftentimes die miserable and alone, unable to overcome their obstacles or be "good enough" no matter how hard they tried! A world where people at least had a second chance? Where they could at least forget, and get a second chance where things might be better? Where they might do better? And all she had to do was sell out a world that, to her, was only one of endless misery, death, and no second chances? I don't approve of her decision, but I cannot for a moment say that I don't understand it!
And then she was denied even that small mercy, that tiny reprieve for which she was so desperate, as Moebius in its infinite sadism and cruelty forced her to continue to remember everything, granted her a measly bit of power she never asked for, and a form of immortality entirely dependent on her continuing to fight and prove herself to someone who would never truly show her any kind of love or compassion, all the while Moebius knew full well that she wasn't going to be good enough to earn even that place in this twisted world. Yet STILL she persevered, tried to make the best of her shitty situation and see it as a positive - self-gaslighting is a necessary survival skill for victims of abuse like that which Shania endured, and we get almost scarily good at it by the time we reach adulthood - despite deep down knowing it was not at all what she wanted nor an improvement by any real metric, which just further displays her incredible resilience and everything she could have been had she just been given the chance! And in the end, all she got was the permanent death she so feared, with no real closure. But at least she could finally see, in her final moments, that she was indeed loved, at least by some people. But it was too late by then.
In a world filled with characters who embody the tragedy that becomes of people who aren't meant to fight in a world where fighting is all most people are allowed to know, how can we condemn her specifically, when she like every other character only broke under the weight of a world too cruel and twisted to be tolerated?! A world with no place for those it deemed weak or lesser! A world of nothing but pointless suffering! A world that needed to end!

I could give my thoughts on many of the other characters, but my phone is about to die and it's now 1 AM. I will say this much about Moebius, though. Keep in mind this is my tired mind's abridged thoughts on the matter. While the individual avatars, especially X, Y, and Z, could use more characterization, they are not just "a glitch in the system." They represent the collective unconscious of Aionios as it is stored within Origin, and the fact is that Aionios is a choice that the people of the two worlds made, at least subconsciously. While Z and Moebius hold steadfastly onto control even as their power weakens and Aionios finally comes to embrace the end and overcome their fear, that is but a reflection of how steadfast instinctive fears and anxieties can be - how stubbornly the fearful mind can refuse to let go of control and how difficult it is for people to take that plunge into the unknown, especially en masse. The simple truth of the matter is that Z was created by and draws his power from Moebius, Moebius is part of the collective unconsciousness, and even to the very end much of it was content to stick its head in the sand and continue slow decay rather than accept the uncertainty of death and rebirth. Noah and Mio triumphed over it only because Aionios itself came to will it overall. By the same coin, the sadism of Moebius is not just there for the sake of being evil, but is a representation of the increasing debauchery of the collective unconscious, as it pursues ever more depraved methods of distraction for itself from the existential horror of its decisions. I can't... quite... retrieve... the details of this line of thought... from my tired brain. Something something Moebius is not just thematically an embodiment of our worst attributes, but a physical manifestation of them, too.
But yeah, all this definitely coulda been done better. I don't think it was at all executed particularly terribly, though. It's just very much on the subtler side and likely planning on using the DLC story to provide additional context, clarity, and depth, alongside other wonderful things, no doubt.

I feel like the most wasted characters are X and Y. Basically anyone else has either some great moment or fall under the category of "great idea, weak implementation". Let's look at some you talk about in your video:
Shania: Shania is basically a standing for a every day person. Someone who hopes to reach greater heights but looses any hope after those close to her die. Adding insult to injury are that both her mother (the last person of her family) puts a huge burden on her, not being able to see her for who she is or as a person, but only as a tool. And her best friend Ghondor not only being a person that has a problem with her words, but also doesn't seem to take her time to talk about what Shania doesn't understand, seemingly insulting her on each and every step without helping her understand where she was wrong. Her biggest problem stems from the fact that she takes away from Sena in Sena's ascencion quest. Like you said, put Shania in the main story and give Sena a new quest and it would take away some of the blame she gets from the fans.
Dirk and Joran: I need to talk about those two combined, since I feel that they are meant to be seen as one unit later in the story.
Let's start with Dirk: Unlike the similar characters from XB1 and XB2, Dirk is for the most part, a killer without a cause. He lacks any kind of bond to the main cast (even to Eunie who he shares the strongest connection with, unlike Mumkhar in XB1) and he also lacks any kind of greater goal or objective to reach (unlike Jin in XB2). No, Dirk in a way represent a wild animal, a killer with no morals or remorse. All he wants is to kill and if you think about it, such a person would scare the shit out of anybody, especially once you consider all the power he has simply by being Moebius. It makes him nearly unstoppable and even if he finds someone strong enough to hurt him, he can still teleport away, allowing himself to flee and find someone else to kill. Cheap? Maybe. But this combination of attitude and powers make him someone to fear if you would have to go up against him in real life.
Now for Joran: You say that Joran is a bad character because of the message he delivers. But I think you misunderstood the message that Joran was supposed to be delivering. Joran's biggest fear was that he was never good enough, always outshone by those around him. In his final fight in the cloud keep however, not only does both the guys he admired the most (Noah and Lanz) give him an encouragement, he finds himself in a position where he can be a hero where no one else can be it.
Because he is in the unique position of stopping Dirk for good. As I said above, Dirk is a threat to the heroes just by the powers of a Moebius and his mindset. And in that moment he just found a way to hurt and etch fear into the main party, kill their next target or hurt their friends. If Dirk gets away, he can achieve his most basic desire again. And with the teleportation powers of a Moebius it would be an easy way out, something that even the heroes can't prevent. But Joran can.
Due to the interlink that Dirk underwent with Joran, Joran can take control and keep Dirk in check. Preventing him from escaping and continuing his wicked acts and harm those that Joran considered friends in his last life before becoming a Moebius. If Joran cancels the Interlink or if he gives Dirk control back, then Dirk wins, even if he is killed later down the line. Basically Joran's sacrifice doesn't mean that only the heroes get to shine. It is a show of true heroism of Joran that he can be someone great, even though it also means his own death. So, he sacrifice his own life not to protect those he cares about and I feel that if you look at the situation in this way, Joran's death is by no means a bad message.
Finally Z: Z is the most paradox villain I have stumbled upon. On the one way, he appears to be a boring final villain. At the same time he really represents the theme of the game. Z doesn't want any kind of progress. He doesn't strive for anything besides his own entertainment. And that makes him arrogant. He gives power to people without thinking about it. He doesn't care about the heroes or their achievements, because he feels that he is not only in the right (because of him being a concept), but also because he doesn't grasp other concepts. And in his final moments, the time he finally shows other feelings than indifference, he dies seconds later, taking away any kind of progress or development he could have had there. But still, I can't stop seeing him as a good representation of the game themes when it comes to stagantion and the fear of tomorrow.
So, why are X and Y the weakest villains? Basically they appear for a short amount of time, unlike Z they don't possess any kind of own will or greater goal to achieve during their screentime and they don't even possess a cut scene death. For the two original Moebius and most likely the two-third conduit representatives of XB3 next to Z they really disappoint.
    Thanks for reading.
And lastly for your question in the description: Nia is better than Melia.

Even though I disagree with a lot (maybe even most 😅) of your points, I really dig this video! I'm so happy to see Xenoblade getting this much attention, and even though I don't have very many problems with this game and I disagree with some of the problems people do have, I have to appreciate the fact that you wouldn't be voicing your issues about the game in the way you do if you didn't like it/care about it. I know I can be a bit of a fanboy about the things I like sometimes, so I'm always open to other perspectives, and I definitely think you made some good points about some things! The main thing I'd personally disagree with is pacing, I personally felt like the pacing in my playthrough was pretty great. I felt like I was getting the perfect balance of side and main content done throughout and was learning so many new things about the characters and the world, but rarely so much that I felt overwhelmed.

Not gonna lie. I'm glad that you aren't one of those folks who thinks that Shania is the "worse" character. But there's also one crucial detail that you forgot. And it's pretty much the fact that the gang took away the opportunity that Shania had. That was being an ouroboros. You'd also have to keep in mind that no matter how much Shania worked even if it may have been impressive, she was still looked down upon. And from the looks of it, she didn't really even have anything to lay on either. All combined with the emotions building up at the last second.
It makes sense for her to not kill everyone the moment she had the chance. In fact, she purposely waited for the gang to arrive. It makes even more sense when you see that her plan didn't even go her way for the first time.
I personally don't relate to the character herself. I also am not saying that she's justified. But I do believe that Shania is a very well-written tragic villain in this series. You claim that she's a mess because some people went through worse problems and you felt like she had no built up to how she felt. You could argue the first point, but I absolutely disagree with the second. It wasn't just a single problem, but a mixture of many others. This includes some of her deceased family members, the weight she's forced to hold and abandon the very thing she used to love, her awful mother who doesn't care about Shania unless she's seen as a good candidate, ~~Ghondor~~, the lack of folks that she felt comfortable to confront the issue with, and combined with the fact that the tiny chance she had to becoming one of the ouroboros is gone... That sucks. Again, this isn't me justifying the character. But she does contain the traits of a tragic villain and it works.
I don't believe Shania and Ghondor taking the spotlight is the character's fault. That's more of the fact that the story was placed in the wrong mission. It could easily be fixed by just separating it and giving Sena her own actual side story. This is probably the only thing I agree with when it comes to the video. The fact that there are other people who actually relates to Shania as well is what makes me believe that this character really worked out. Even when many hates her, which is also supposed to be another obvious effect. Shania is one of the many things that reminds me of the xeno series itself.
    That's just my thoughts tho.

Eunie's side story basically ruined my investment in Consuls S and J. For context, it reveals that the ranking system is a sham and the promise of Gold Rank allowing you to stop fighting only exists to get exterminated by Moebius. You can actually finish the quest before even getting to the betrayal, which I did.
As a result, not only see these two as selfish pricks who put themselves before everyone else, whenever S was talking about how this is a world where anyone can stand out, I was annoyed at the party, thinking "you know that's a lie you morons! Say something!"

Hot take but, out of all of moebius I actually hate N the most. His motivations boil down to just mio and wants to be with her forever when she doesn't want that and actively goes against that. He also acts like a pathetic man child when M died and got jealous of Noah cause mio wanted to be with Noah and not him (even tho m wanted N to stop this), and he is a dumbass for not knowing and not caring about mios feelings at all while trying to satisfy his feeling of wanting to be with her forever, and the fact he refuses to listen to mios words and refuses to change until near the end of the game, which made his redemption really bad and undeserved (to me at least). And it feels like a shitty attempt at trying do do what they did with Jin again, which makes him look like great value Jin who's a man child. Also n only joined moebius and slaughtered an entire civilization (aka the first city) just to get mio back. And he just feels like a half assed way to make a parallel/ rival to Noah. Also n is kind of a coward and lazy, instead of trying to make an effort to change the world he hates he joins moebius and does the opposite. And that's why I hate consul N, if you like him that's fine, this is just my opinion

To me, the idea of Moebius is that they're like summer cartoon villains because their sole purpose is to be summer cartoon villains. Z is like a concept of the player's desire to maintain the "conflict" and "shunen" structure of 2 diying worlds and of course you are waiting for a epic god tier final BOSS and at the end, not even a god can't stop the vanishing . For that you need this kind of asshole and they are very aware of their role and thats why they fear to be vanished. That's why at the end you see a lot of other Moebiuses watching the final fight, they're there for the replay. The only important one it's N because the real final BOSS it's accepting the time Will come someday.
    or maybe thats overthinking.

I don’t think Shania really skipped that many steps characters wise. Oh sure it didn’t take much for her to become evil, but she had no support network. Her best friend is stated to be Ghondor, and their relationship is pretty toxic. Her mom’s no help either. Who exactly is left in the City for her to betray? She didn’t switch sides, she picked the one that offered (and delivered) what she wanted, a new shot at life.

A lot of people like the main cast, but I just find them all bland. Nothing of interest really for me. I much prefer the Heroes like Gray, Ashera, Teach, etc. Maybe because they're a bit more veteran and mature. Its strange, I don't really like the "anime" aesthetic and writing usually, but I never had that problem with 1's cast at all...yet somehow I grew way more attached to a character like Riki and even Sharla than any of the main characters here.
