funny story : I have buyed an used xbox that could no read disc, after dissasembly a note was written on the dvd drive ' new lens from china but not working'… As you can gess, the antistatic solder blob was stil there! thank you very much for the info!
Very good video! you explains everything so good. But i have only one question , i have to calibrate the laser? or only quit the solder bridge and put the laser, and thats all?? thankyou!
so, if I were to replace my laser with a new one, do I have to do anything special or can I, after screwing the new one in, start playing right away? (I am a noob in terms of technology)
Surgeons log: - Subject started showing decreased motor and reading skills, cause unknown. - Subject deteriorating, decreased recognition of relatives (success rate 1 out of 10). Early signs of glaucoma or Alzheimer's disease? - Performed surgery on subject based on experimental procedures resulted in failure due to lack of proper equipment. - Proper measuring equipment arrived, new surgery scheduled. - Optic values too low, all adjustments unsuccessful. - Eyesight decreased to zero, subject completely blind, added to transplant waiting list. - Possible donor found, blood type seems to be incompatible, donor of different origin. - Researched possibility of international donors, possible but waiting list is long. - New test available for blood type comparison, first donor possible match, chance on success 50/50. - Researched possible procedures for surgery. Optimal match found. - Surgery scheduled based on professor Tinker's procedure. - Transplant was a success! Immediate and full return of motor and reading skills. Subject has been given a second chance at life. Hurrah! **wakes up** Dammit! Must've been sleep typing again... **leaps off unicorn** Now what actually happened...: My Xbox was having increased difficulty reading discs, games wouldn't launch or stop mid session (Open tray error / Disc unreadable etc). I didn't know what to do and I was reluctant to open it, afraid I'd break something. So, tired of playing the "open tray game", I stopped using it some years ago. Recently I wanted to play some Xbox games even though my Xbox still had the same problem. I decided to find some tutorials (plenty good ones online) but none of the easy fixes that people shared worked (like cleaning the lens, checking the laser array position, checking the in-drive magnet disc locking mechanism etc). - Adjustment of pot meters of original laser also failed since I didn't have a multi meter. I only did this blindly because I found a video that recommended turning the laser module's pot meters quarter turns without any further explanation (forgot to mark the starting point as well). Shortly after I found videos and proper information that this should only be done with the help of a multi meter. DON'T do this without it, and always take initial measurements of the pot meters. Chances are your laser will be fried (or break down quickly) if you don't and/or it will be almost impossible to determine how much resistance they/it should have in order to work. Google "Adjusting xbox 360 laser pot meters" and you'll find plenty of resources with a lot of information (values/brands/instructions) on the subject. - With the help of this video I replaced the Liteon laser (model 14xx) with a Benq laser (model 141x) from an old Xbox I had lying around (one of the first models). I wasn't sure this was going to work, but since my Xbox wasn't working anyway I decided to try. The only indication I found was that the available replacement part you can order is compatible with Benq and Liteon drives and that the laser modules appeared to look the same. Luckily it worked like a charm, maybe this info will help someone in the same situation. Thank you very much for taking the time to post this tutorial, it helped a lot and it gave me the confidence to attempt the replacement! Keep on keepin' on :-)! **Rides off into the sunset**
@Tinker Mods- I work with electronics all the time however have never replaced a laser...my sons went out and it is Lite-on Phillips DG-16D5S drive with the G2R2 laser. I want to just replace the laser but can't find any definitive info on whether i can use a a G2R2 laser that is listed under the DG-16D4S drive model.(as most of the sellers online list it under this) Are they the same? Some of the sellers list the G2R2 laser as DG-16D5S / DG-16D4S for Xbox 360 so i am assuming that this laser will work with either model...but I'm not sure...hope someone on here can clear this up for me. Thanks!
great video man. very descriptive and not too timely. i have this disc read error on my console as well. im about to get the laser and try it out. I'll be back with updates :)
This is one the best guides on TH-cam about laser replacement. Thanks. Just one thing: what if you overtight the 9:15 screw? I mean, do you have to change the entire laser 'cause you ruined the hole on it, or you just need a new "white arm"? :-D
When you install a new DVD disc drive you can not simply put the new one in. Each disc drive is unique to that Xbox 360 console. What you have to do is take the Circuit (PCB) board out of the old drive and put it in the new one. This way the keys match up and will allow you to play games.
To: Tinker Mods I bought a NEW LASE for my XBOX 360----do I STILL need to adjust the LASER POT also??---or do I leave it alone--cause my New Laser reads 2.8ohmss--Help!!!
I have a Venturer pvs166w dvd/cd portable player,It’s playing CDs ok,but trying different DVDs there is no picture, sound only,I’ve cleaned the laser, which lights up red,but no picture!could this be a faulty laser, Any ideas would be welcomed before I try and get a new part.thanks 18/10/19
could anything potentially happen if you don't remove the sodder ball? since i left it as-is and installed it. Haven't put any games in in to test if it will read, now I'm hesitant to do so. EDIT: I tried it using an unused game that a friend had given me (which he didn't play either) and nothing happened to the disc, but it still wont read discs. gonna open it back up and see if removing the sodder ball does the trick
If you do not undo the solder ball, it will short out the laser and you will need to buy another one. That solder ball is there to prevent static discharge/shock during packaging and shipping.
Late reply, and you probably won't need it anymore but like JD Lei said, you should be able to. So maybe this will help others in the same situation. I replaced my defective Liteon 14xx laser module with a Benq 141x laser module (they looked the same and had almost the same model number). Worked right off the bat, no further adjustment needed. NB: I had a spare one from another Xbox so I didn't need to remove any anti static solder point.
Swapped my laser with the correct one. And it doesn't work. So I swapped my old one back in and now both dont work..onlything that changed was the disconnection of the ribbon cable. Im pretty sure the memory it held is now cleared, because now both are non working.

Thanks a lot.
This HOWTO video was great.
Replaced the laser and the procedure
gave my 360 a new lease of life..
What was the fault you had?my Venturer psv166w plays CDs ok,but no picture when I try different DVDs,sound only..could this be the laser unit? Thanks.

Easy to follow and now my Xbox works perfectly again
Thank you! Had to also lubricate the rails on mine since the whole thing was stiff, but now it seems to be working fine :)
Very good video! you explains everything so good. But i have only one question , i have to calibrate the laser? or only quit the solder bridge and put the laser, and thats all?? thankyou!
No problem! I appreciate the feedback!
My 360 laser has stopped reading the discs. I've replaced the laser and it still it doesn't read discs. What's going on ?
Same. You figure out the issue?
Same. Any solutions?
Tinker Mods do you know of a reliable source on eBay as of where I can buy a new laser? I don't want to buy one of those refurbished ones :/

Fbs Arts did you ever figure this out? i just did it all in reverse without listening to him then heard that later and the screw isn't staying.

How did you know you didn’t need to adjust the rail heights? There are adjustment screws that can bring them up and down.
what size are the 4 small screws on the bottom that come up threw that hold the whole assembly?
Erek Bickford They are a T6 on my unit. You can

You have to solder out the anti static point. It should be on the left next to the laser ribbon security tabs.
+NintendoFan69 ok thanks I figured it out a long time ago lolol--but thanks anywayss

Thanks for the vid, i am back up and running now!
Good tutorial. Short and Sweet.
You sound like Cleveland Brown at times...
Is it required to get rid of the solder ball?
I think so, I replaced laser today and took rid a little too much of the ball but now X working perfectly.

After replacing it it only plays movies not games any idea on how to fix it?
Good job, worked a treat
Can u replace a benq laser to a lite on laser?
Yes. People never answer that question for us guys but yes you can, had to figure it out for myself
JD Lei Thank you sir for answearing this, hope you're right because I'm about to do it.

+DutchmanJay Please answer quick. Can i use a dvd player laser for my xbox? can i use any type of laser for my xbox?
Swapped my laser with the correct one. And it doesn't work. So I swapped my old one back in and now both dont work..onlything that changed was the disconnection of the ribbon cable. Im pretty sure the memory it held is now cleared, because now both are non working.

Thanks man it worked
Fantastic, top job Many thanks..
No laser calibration should be needed at all. If it does then I would return it to whoever I bought it from.
Not working
