LOVE my MT-03. Grew up on dirt bikes. I also have a road king in my garage and have ridden plenty of 650’s. Still smiling at every light. Way better for new riders. It’s possible to start on an MT07 but in my opinion way more dangerous, less forgiving and inefficient for learning. Don’t let ego tell you to start bigger. I have buddies that can barely keep up with me on their bigger bikes because they’ve never learned what it’s like to be 100% comfortable on a smaller engine. The itch to go “bigger” never goes away but Don’t let the engine size fool you! Learn to use all of the engine you paid for and get better at riding! You will never “outgrow” a bike just because it’s 300cc’s.
I rode a 07 Suzuki Vstrom DL650 for 6 years, I recently traded it in for the new 2023 Vstrom 250 SX. I'm very happy and still treat it the same as the 650. Cant go wrong with getting a smaller engine and still having fun.
I have an MT-03, another reason it is better for a beginner is the shifting. If you downshift by accident or let the clutch out wrong the MT-03 is less likely to spin the tires or lurch really hard.
It's not a "beginner motorcycle" It's a small capacity machine. I ride an MT-O3, and I'm now aged 87, having started riding at the age of 14. Hardly a beginner🙃
Dang old timer you out here riding an mt at 87 when most people get trikes as they get older props to you man stay safe hopefully I got your energy when I’m older
My 1st bike was MT03. Just sold it after almost 2yrs. Ready for MT09 with confidence now. Reason I passed on MT07 was in case I dropped the bike as a new rider which I never did. Plus the MT03 sold in less then 1week. It was a feeding frenzy.
The MT03 is one of the best naked bikes for a beginner but IMO the Kawasaki Ninja 400 is the best beginner bike overall. You'll stick with the Ninja 400 longer. For new first time riders building strong riding fundamentals is important, it'll keep you alive when you move up to a more powerful bike. Plus a Ninja 400 will hold it's resale value for when you upgrade to a new bike.
I always recommend the Ninja 400 too, it is second on my list. The reason I say the MT-03 edges it out is because the MT series are 100% street bikes with great bottom end grunt. However, the Ninja 400 are a close second and I always recommend them as well.
I used to ride a GS 750 years ago. Loved it. But I am just riding around my town these days, and to the next town over, sometimes. I don’t need a 750 anymore. I love my new 2023 MT 03. It’s all about cornering It’s amazingly agile and fun. I’m also getting 55 miles per gallon in town because I’m not constantly trying to twist the throttle off the bars.
I wanted to get a Z500 but I just could not get used to the seating position. My body type I kept feeling like I was shoved into the tank. The MT-03 felt perfect sitting on it. Ended up getting it in the gray/cyan color and it gets delivered tomorrow.
Nearly all beginner bikes these days are great: Yamaha mt03 & R3, Kawasaki Ninja 400 & z400, KTM Duke 390 & Rc390, Suzuki Sv650, Honda cb300r and so on) All great bikes just boils down to ones preference
Sweet wisdom, "you are going to try other bikes" not too many tubers have said that. I remember when I got my TVS I thought it was my one and done and now am on my third bike and looking forward to another.
Honestly the z400 and duke 390 have appreciably more horsepower. I had an MT-03 and loved it but if you're going to buy a beginner bike new, I would choose a z400 or duke 390 over the MT, unless you're really in love with the "Dark Side of Japan" aesthetics. Yamaha needs to beef up the MT a little bit
The bike that would be REALLY good as a beginner bike if it wasn't expensive is the CBR500R/CB500F/CB500X. They seem to be great starter bikes, but that price is a barrier.
I don't think the MT-07 is a good option for a beginner because it's easy for one to rip the throttle on accident but on an MT-03 doing the same mistake is going to be more forgiving on them
For a beginner that just has to have a Yamaha. MT-03 all day. I don’t think you mentioned it, but insurance will be a lot cheaper, (MT-07 does have a hooligan bike reputation). A beginner haven’t developed Moto skills yet. Defensive riding, invisibility training, evasive maneuvers, panic braking, it’s a lot more forgiving if you make an error on a smaller bike. It’s quicker and easier to develop on a smaller bike.
How dumb of an idea is to start on a 650 thumper? It's an old adventure/touring BMW F650GS with around 48HP and somewhat of a lazy engine, but with lots of bottom-end torque. Tried it once, liked the king-of-the-road riding position, long travel suspension and tame throttle response. It's got a really very low seat height - around 78cm/31 inches. It's got long gears too (only 5 of them), it's almost like a diesel and very easy to ride with all that bottom-end torque, but it's somewhat large and heavy (although it's said to be light for an ADV). What do you think?
Yeah we are splitting hairs between the MT03 and Ninja 400 I have an MT-03 and have a buddy with a Z400 and yes the Kawi has a tiny bit more grunt but it is so negligible. Buy whatever you think feels the most like "you".
Quick question. I’m a recent widower. I’ve had a lot of bikes. my first was a Kawasaki. I had every Harley Davidson model after that My last one was 250 Italika Mexican/ Chinese in Mexico 2023 before that I had the MTO9 and I liked it. I have been traveling a little and decided to spend less time in Boston USA. I need a bike in Mexico, but I need a tourpack for my laundry and groceries. It doesn’t look like I can get a small tourpack on that bike. Am I correct? I live alone and it is imperative for me for basic essentials to have a tour pack. If I am correct do you have any suggestion, brother??
I live where I don't have to worry about weather too much. Like I can be ridding today and basically all year. But I need something that can do Freeway commute at 70-80 for around 20-30 minutes at a time. I worry the MT-03 or Ninja 400 wouldn't be good on the Freeway.
FIrst thing I ever had was a 150cc scooter and loved it. For the size and price it was decent on speed. Now almost 20 years later Im ready to get back on a bike and the MT series mainly the 03 and 07 are what Im eyeballing. My only real question is how well it can handle the highway? example a 40+ min ride to downtown Chicago on it, can it hang?
i saw thr price of Mt03 and Z400 they are very similar however maintenance wise you have to spend more on z400 due to a big bike category , but man that all black is beautiful. my primary choice in a while is R3 but my friends want to have a long ride at some point but i thought my back would suffer using r3 for long ride.
CycleCruza do you have any recommendations for tall new riders? I always hear the suggestion of getting a dual sport but I'd prefer a naked street bike. Are we relegated to dual sports and small SuMos?
If you’re even close to a bigger guy, the MT-03 is a non-starter…way, way too small. I have a Ninja 400, bought for my 5’4” daughter and I to share, and the N400 already feels small for my 6’1” frame (fortunately I have two other bikes to ride). I sat on the MT-03 prior to buying the Ninja 400 and it felt even smaller…no way that would’ve worked.
If you took the MSF class you should be fine on the MT-07 but it is a bit powerful for a new rider totally new to motorcycles. However, most people do fine starting on a MT-07. Best of luck!
@@CycleCruza there is no such thing as "MSF" Course in Croatia, however the mt07(restricted) fits into A2 class of bikes which takes 3months to pass which im going thru right now, however i bough the bike from the dealership brand new and they got me papers for A2 but the bike itself has no restriction so hopefully it isnt much more than a restricted version 🤣,however thank you ride safe man🤙
I just started riding again after almost 20 years. I just bought a 24 Triumph 765RS. I think it’s a great starter bike. Especially with the riding modes and the 5 axis IMU for traction control ABS and wheely control.
UK limits you to 125cc until you pass your test, so I had a Honda CB125F and did 600 miles on it. My bike licence course/test was on an MT-07. Fell in love with it and bought one. My throttle control when I started riding was terrible, somehow I'd find myself at full throttle when I messed something up/panicked etc. On the MT-07 I would have looped out for sure. So something more forgiving for a ham-fisted new rider sounds like a really good idea, even if only for a few months until you get the hang of it. The MT07 is a great great bike after that. I would also add that ABS is a good idea for newbies having locked up the front wheel on my first ever bike ride and finding myself on the floor.
The UK does things right to keep riders safer. Here in the USA, you can go get a temp license at the BMV and go ride a Kawasaki H2 without zero riding experience. lol All new rider should take the MSF class here in America. Honestly, the smaller bikes are more fun in the city. I got bored riding fast bikes slow around the city. These little grunty bikes you can throw around and rip on around town, just makes city riding more fun.
I still would rather get a mto7 than a mto3. Mto3 is not even considered a bike with its miniscule power. Mto3 a moped mto7 a motorcycle. I ride a yz250 2 stroke as my first dirt bike im 5'7" 120 pounds its a lot of bike but i shred it.😃⚡
Dude i can’t believe i used to own a motorcycle that produce 100bhp to the ground because any thing over 50 bhp is fast and yes if you twist that throttle the the front tire 🛞 comes up so don’t twist it in a snappy way you should be ok on a hayabusa if you got that common sense
About the MT 03 Vs the MT 07 first of all the 3 looks better, it wears those LEDs better. But Yamaha should engage a Chinese company to make cheaper MT 03 and sell them in Africa because with how you Americans talk about them the 300 have little business being sold in the US.
😂you do have to switch up and spice up things otherwise she will walk out of the relationship. Beginner bikes anything really under 600cc to get used to the bike. Get used to the traffic and riding getting used to braking and avoid getting killed like John Wick out on the streets. Keep your head on a swivel and focus on every possibility of what could go wrong.
Ninja 400 is second on my list. That is a great bike as well. I wish I was sponsored by Yamaha, I should be as much as I rep their bikes. lol The MT series of bikes are straight up street bikes focused on strong bottonmend grunt/torque.
the problem is both the z 400 and duke 390 are street bikes and have way, way more bottom end and middle, and high end power than the ashmatic mt 03 motor @@CycleCruza
@@CubanSalt why get the lesser rated bike for more money? The Z400 comes in at a lower price and rides considerably better. It’s no rocket but it goes.
Wrong, best started bike in the mt line up is the mt07. Mt03 you will get bored of it after 2 days of riding. And mt07 is easy to learn I just reached 4 of my friends last week how to ride geared mt07 even tho they never drove a car or ride a bike
Any idiot can ride on the flat, smooth, streets. Get a dual sport or adventure bike and challenge yourself. Road bikes are boring, easy to ride for Grandpas. Ride a dirt road, take on a gravel environment and you'll see that road bikes are two wheeled cars.
It’s the American way pal.😂😂😂 best salesman on earth… have you heard their other salesman pitch..? “M’erica… the greatest nation on earth…. Durka Durka” 😂😂😂

It’s not a beginners bike , some of us oldies ain’t as fit as we once were , excellent small capacity, plenty of get up and go.

I agree 100%! However, most new riders do fine on the MT-07 if they took the MSF class before they buy their first motorcycle.
I leaned to ride on road on a MT 03 it’s a great bike.
Cycle Cruza, I’m 6’3” 210lbs. I’m a beginner and there is no way I start with that, or anything in that size. 2 small for us bigger guys 💪🏽
Your gear looks sick dude.. I'm thinking of getting my first bike .. I'm torn between this one, ktm 390,
I live where I don't have to worry about weather too much.
I can tell from owning a MT-07 that is does great on the highway. The MT-03 maybe not as much but is capable on the highway.
I started on a 2022 Harley Pan America Special. Next bike is going to be the Ducati V4 Multi Strata.
Thank you MotorcycleDunkey 🙏🏼
i saw thr price of Mt03 and Z400 they are very similar however maintenance wise you have to spend more on z400 due to a big bike category , but man that all black is beautiful. my primary choice in a while is R3 but my friends want to have a long ride at some point but i thought my back would suffer using r3 for long ride.
just bought a 2024 mt-03 to start out with. Figured I'd ride it for a year before I trade up
Which pipe do you got on that bike? Sounds good.
first time biker here just got a 2024 MT-03 🩷
CycleCruza do you have any recommendations for tall new riders? I always hear the suggestion of getting a dual sport but I'd prefer a naked street bike. Are we relegated to dual sports and small SuMos?
What exhaust is that? Sounds amazing

So we're you on the 300 0r 7
If you’re even close to a bigger guy, the MT-03 is a non-starter…way, way too small. I have a Ninja 400, bought for my 5’4” daughter and I to share, and the N400 already feels small for my 6’1” frame (fortunately I have two other bikes to ride). I sat on the MT-03 prior to buying the Ninja 400 and it felt even smaller…no way that would’ve worked.

Every time I ride, I become a shiny teal demon, carved from pure Incan turquoise. 👺👺👺👺🐢🔥🐢🔥
Just got approved for an mt03. I aint got $ for the down payment though so ima have to let it go and just save to buy it cash
What about husqvarna 401 ?
Seeing this video 2 days after buying an mt07 as my first lmao
Personally i think the MT03 is the best looking in the MT line
I still would rather get a mto7 than a mto3. Mto3 is not even considered a bike with its miniscule power. Mto3 a moped mto7 a motorcycle. I ride a yz250 2 stroke as my first dirt bike im 5'7" 120 pounds its a lot of bike but i shred it.😃⚡
my mt03 can get to 60 mph faster than most cars... 5 seconds... it's not a moped in the slightest.
No such thing as a beginner bike. You cub scouts crack me up lol😂😂😂😂😂
I was here since his scooter lol i was on one too.
I choose scrambler 400x it does most of what I want.
I can't afford having multiple bikes
Nice! That is a cool bike too.
Thanks 😂😊
I’m 6’2 I need a beginner bike that isn’t too small..
Duke 250 ❤
That is a great starter bike too!
About the MT 03 Vs the MT 07 first of all the 3 looks better, it wears those LEDs better. But Yamaha should engage a Chinese company to make cheaper MT 03 and sell them in Africa because with how you Americans talk about them the 300 have little business being sold in the US.
Ergonomics bro , I'm five eleven and don't fit comfortable on 400 ninja !! Plus handle bars not as comfortable.
The MT series is probably better for me. An older beginner that's probably too old for a sport bike. lol
Ninja 250R i learned so much
You must be sponsored. Ninja400 is way better.
Ninja 400 is second on my list. That is a great bike as well. I wish I was sponsored by Yamaha, I should be as much as I rep their bikes. lol The MT series of bikes are straight up street bikes focused on strong bottonmend grunt/torque.
I will agree. The Ninja 400 is at a better price point.
the problem is both the z 400 and duke 390 are street bikes and have way, way more bottom end and middle, and high end power than the ashmatic mt 03 motor @@CycleCruza
@@RadDadisRadwhat's the difference in a few hundred dollars
@@CubanSalt why get the lesser rated bike for more money? The Z400 comes in at a lower price and rides considerably better. It’s no rocket but it goes.
Wrong, best started bike in the mt line up is the mt07. Mt03 you will get bored of it after 2 days of riding. And mt07 is easy to learn I just reached 4 of my friends last week how to ride geared mt07 even tho they never drove a car or ride a bike
I love my MT03. And I have anything but board on it. It’s a gas!
Duke 390 haves 38nm of torque
Dunkey
From where you belong buddy
Any idiot can ride on the flat, smooth, streets. Get a dual sport or adventure bike and challenge yourself. Road bikes are boring, easy to ride for Grandpas. Ride a dirt road, take on a gravel environment and you'll see that road bikes are two wheeled cars.
I never heard anybody talk so much crap all that mouth didn't talk about the motorcycle much
It’s the American way pal.😂😂😂 best salesman on earth… have you heard their other salesman pitch..?
“M’erica… the greatest nation on earth…. Durka Durka” 😂😂😂
