  • there is lots of workflow guides for blender to Unreal engine but almost all fail to mention the official epic game maintained addon for sending data from blender to unreal this video is to go over the basics of getting the addon working but also goes over the most important settings which nobody seems to talk about .

      Blenderbim is being worked on atm and it’s native bim , I would highly recommend you check out IFC architect and how he is using blenderbim as an end to end tool in his practice 😄 I’m still only learning BIM and have been using revit for a bit now but blenderbim has been improving rapidly defo worth a look 😀

      @@vizualflow You're welcome, you even taught me something I didn't realize in Blender yet (move the Origin Point on the fly -- I was doing this manually before through a slower method which was kind of annoying and you made it so much easier) so keep at it! 🔥

    installed to Blender 4.0, Send to unreal is now called "push assets" under the pipeline menu dropdown, upon clicking push assets with everything enabled in unreal it says "FBX Scene Loading Failed : 'File is corrupted Cube.fbx' when exporting a default cube. Any ideas?
    Update* It works in 3.6 but not 4.0 at the moment 18th Nov 2023.

      The send to unreal will be out soon for 4.0 I suspect 😁the best solution is to have 3.6 still available as 3.6 is the only version that can open both pre 3.6 and 4.0 blend files 😊

    Pressing "m" in object mode will move objects to a new collection. Negates the need for Machine tools and the Shift C workflow you're showing here :)

      Yeah I should have mentioned the vanilla way of doing things aswell here , it’s a collection manager you get with machin3 tools command and only the option to move with the M Key 😄 along with all the other benefits of installing machin3 tools it’s a must have for me 😀 and it’s free!

    thank you so much! I noticed how the other blender to unreal videos missed some topics. This is exactly what I was looking for! What about baking materials and animations in blender to unreal. For example a curtain moving in the wind. Objects moving etc.

      Gonna be releasing a New workflow video soon , that works with blender 4.0+ so this information might become irrelevant quick, as the maintainers of the addon (s2ue) have no fix for blender 4.0+ yet and this new workflow gonna work without any addons 😄 hasn’t been fully tested yet for production but will be releasing a video talking about this soon 🤝😊

      For baking textures that’s another complete topic and depending on what way you want to animate your curtain you can do that multiple ways aswell , from using the world position offset shaders in unreal or baking the animation to alembic and importing into unreal , or you can setup skeletal mesh highly subdivided plane with chaos cloth in unreal and get some pretty good results this way aswell , there are many techniques to achieve these things and we will get to go deeper in these subjects soon 😄.

    did not know about the shortcut to move the origin lol i have been doing going to edit mode select a vertices snap cursor to selected then set origin to 3D cursor lol

    cool guide! also a suggestion maybe you can make a tutorial about altermesh too, which gives users the opportunity to import their geometry node setups into unreal!

      Believe it or not I use to use this addon regularly in beta , since they decided to charge 100eur for the addon it is a lot more niche now and less people have access to such tools , I probably will get around to talking about it at some pooint and hopefully they rethink the pricing 😊 cos quite expensive

      oh I was using it regularly while they are on beta & alpha, now I checked it and indeed it has 99usd pricetag... and only other alternative on the market has 299 usd pricetag... sad for indies and hobbiests like me

    Thank you for explaining all this! One quick thing: I'm pretty sure you can just use the M key (move) to assign objects to a collection, like it was in old Blender with the layers.

      You’re welcome we love to see people getting value from the videos , yeah you can do this aswell I just find the collection pie menu way more fluent for my workflow I should have mentioned that you can use M in Object mode aswell I purely use M for Merging verts in edit mode😀

      yeah only the very basic PBR will be exported , you will nearly always have to setup or at the very least adjust your materials in unreal but if you avoid nodes that wouldn’t be available in unreal it will attempt to push the basics like texture samples and value for roughness etc but if you use stuff like a color ramp or other shading nodes that are blended specific they won’t translate 😄 I hope this make sense 😎 thanks for your comment 😀

    Hmmmm what about materials (roughness, metallic, normal, diffuse, specular)?
    Can we export that to UE using this add-on or is it just limited to geometry?

      Yes basic PBR setups with textures
      Do transfer but if you are using certain nodes in your setup in blender it won’t come in correctly in unreal has to be the most basic setup , becasue they are two different render engines I would highly recommend setting up all your materials in engine after you geo block out is finalised 😀

      Sorry for the delay , videos being worked on atm 😃 yeah textures will go across but shaders won’t
      So if you use blender native nodes in the shader editor in blender they won’t translate to the unreal material graph , you can use basic nodes like texture samples and it will attempt to set them up in unreal for you but will be very basic node setup
      becasue they are two different render engines they will almost always require some adjustment or setup in unreal
      Really looking forward to more material x and USD development because think that’s the way for the future it’s just not ready yet imo 😊

      If you are talking about everything done perfectly for you when you bring it into unreal so will look the exact same with no issue or work to be done in unreal then no , but you can get pretty close 😅there will nearly always be stuff to be done in unreal after 😓 although USD is getting alot better across all programs and I’m sure very soon it’s going to be the standard , so will keep it posted about This workflow aswell because atm no sign of S2UE for blender 4.0 and i have a feeling that this add-on will get deprecated soon , I see in UE 5.4 and Blender 4.1+ both platforms have made USD improvements and looking forward to testing for production and sharing the workflow soon , because it’s a multi software workflow and there’s so many quirks between them there is a lot of things that need to be gone over before I can share all info in one nice video sadly 😂😅 but hopefully soon have loads in the pipeline and barely enough time to do all 😀 thanks for your comment 😊

    Great tutorial man! Works great, except when it comes to collisions. Do you manage to export collisions with the UBX_[Meshname] method? Mine can't seem to show up

      So In the S2UE addon in blender on the import Settings Tab When you go to FBX Section there should be two options that need to be checked
      which are ....
      Generate Missing Collisions.
      Use one Convex Hull per UCX
      check both of these boxes and it should be sorted .
      you can alwasy adjust your collisions directly in the Unreal Editor aswell as an alternative.
      I hope this helps :D

    Definitely going to try this out!
    But what about shaders and textures, are these exported / imported ok!?!
    It is a huge pain in the ass importing stuff in Unreal and having to correct all the materials again.

      Yeah I agree can be a pain 😓you can import basic node setups that translate well , for instance PBR materials without and fancy blender specific shading nodes will transfer but sadly they are two different render engines so when it comes to shaders they don’t translate as the nodes are different although similar to achive the same result , there are a few things you can do to avoid this
      maybe not the solutions you looking for but might help you .
      I jsut don’t texture in blender if I am going to render in unreal jsut do my materials and shaders in unreal if i plan to render there
      another option although not free so won’t be for everyone is Use substance designer and painter for texturing and match viewport color spaces with blender and unreal then maps can be baked for both render engines the main change being an inverted normal map for unreal although you will still have to setup the maps again anyway sadly
      if you must transfer mats just make sure the material/shading setup is very basic and doesn’t have any nodes that wouldn’t translate to unreal 😁then you can make tweaks in unreal but you will have to make some no doubt 😅
      substance / painter
      But for the likes of basic PBR where you have multiple image textures plugged into the relevant slots without any extra shading nodes like color ramps etc this will transfer 😎

      Yeah of course you can bake them in the same workflow you would use for substance though and still gonan need to setup your material in engine with baked maps 😅🥲

      dont have an eta but I did see the maintainer saying he was gonna have a look at the breaking changes that were made in blender 4.0 and that was a little while ago , tbh i hope it's soon i have been testing USD workflow with Omniverse and unreal but that workflow still has a whole load of other issues that come with it aswell atm nevermind the fact that you have to have Nvidia Card to do it which is why i havnt shared it aswell :D

    Does it work for blender 4? When I pushed the asset over, I got error on unreal .fbx corrupted

      not right now but this addon is currently still being maintained and would guess a version for 4.0 is imminent :) i cant wait aswell currently using 4 as my daily driver and really want s2ue back but still have 3.6 installed and still need to because 4.0 cant open your older blend files correctly and 3.6 is used as a way to convert from older versions to 4.0 so even when s2ue is updated still gonna need to keep 3.6 for a while :)

    lets say i have a character that is supposed to have swapable armor/clothing sets, is there a way to tell the addon to import the meshes with the same skeleton?
    what it currently does it creats a new skeleton for each item, despite all being parented to the same armature in blender.

      What’s your use case ? Like do you want this to function in game engine as a game , or only for rendering ? If you want to use in game interactive I think exporting all pieces speerately and then using blueprints is the way to go or if not just export duplicates and put them on there own view layers in your scene in unreal 😀 also you might want to try other formats as s2ue might not be the best option for this workflow…

      you can reassign the main skeleton in ue to the object by right clicking on the skeletal mesh, go to skeleton and then you can assign a new skeleton.

      Released only yesterday mate , they will be on it surely as it’s in active development and you will see a 4.0 version very soon I’d expect 😃

      For a new project you will need to enable the setting but not every time you load the project 😀 if you want to use it in every project then you will be looking at the engine.ini files and editing the default project settings 😀 I will make a video explaining chaining defaults using text editor 😃

    Does anyone know when will 'send to unreal' be supported for the newer versions of blender? I've been trying for hours only to find out this doesn't work

      Honestly expected the S2UE update for blender 4.0+ by now I’m still using 3.6 and 4.0.2 ATM to workaround and really want this addon to work in 4.0+ soon🥶

      The maintainers did say they were gonna be updating for 4.0 and looking through some of the exceptions and error it’s throwing up since 4.0 , I want to say it will be available soon but I also thought the update would be pushed by now 😅

    After clicking Quickstart, and release page, I am met with a 404 empty page... is there a fix for this? I linked github and epic but still no access to the page...

      Yeah the most common cause of this is ,
      at the end of the linking process you will have to have accept an email confirmation from epic games GitHub before you can access I should of put this part in the video becasue so many em to link accounts but notvery clear at the end of linking process that you have to accept an Email confirmation aswell 😎😁🔥

    Would this work with Characters? Rigs? Animations?

      Yes but not without limitations ☺️ can import your rigs and bone hierarchy no problem , but if you are doing this sometimes a different workflow might be more suited depending on use .case I would defo check out UE to Rigify and USD or another mix of different workflows depending on your needs/use case 😃

    I would like to see how to import the UE5 skeleton and export to unreal5 with sendToUnreal

      sadly there is no importing from unreal using send2ue of course you can export the fbx with skeleton from UE import the FBX and then use s2ue to push it back once altered :) theres a few people that have came with certain needs like yours which s2ue doesnt cover so will be posting alternative workflows for camera animations and skeletons soon.

      Im you must have machin3 tools add on which is completely free and give you loads of extra useful pie menus in blender ☺️ alternatively you can use the M key and you will get a an option to move the selected items to any collection ☺️ or you can drag and drop the items directly in the outliner to the export collection 😎
      The reason I recommend using machin3tools (shift + c ) becasue give you even more control over your collections 😃

      You don’t need to export the animations like objects using export collections , the animation data can be exported with each animated object instead , by using the s2ue settings dialog > Import > check animations , instead of thinking animations as objects coming out of blender and into unreal , think of them as like data that is attached to each animated object instead of being separate from the object itself.

      if you see here is more detailed information on exporting animations using send 2 unreal but again sometimes its better to do the animation in unreal or export as alembic cache.

    I don't get why you need machine tools to move into collection I just press 'm' and can choose collection. It's faster, just one click and it work since 3.3 at least, don't remember earlier versions.

      You don’t need it , it’s an option that I prefer as it gives more flexibility in managing collections not just move to ,😊 m key in my head is used for merge in edit mode and when i think collections I think c I hate m key shortcuts anywah anyway it’s so far away from the lest side of board where your hand Lies 90% of the time when modelling and using blender in general 😊😄 there’s loads of ways to do everything in nearly all appications this is not a requirement but a preference 😃

      First of all there can multiple reasons why this would occur
      Either you have rotated the object in blender but not applied the rotation to apply rotation and scale select the mesh in blender press Ctrl + A to apply the rotation this will tell blender that it’s no longer rotated and it’s in its original position ☺️😎
      Aswell once a mesh is selected you can use Ctrl + . To see and adjust the local axis of the mesh you may have its origin rotated locally if it’s not the same as global would adjust the origin and apply rotation again 😎
      Alternatively you can change the up axis in the import and export settings of SEND 2 Unreal but by default it should be good to go , so first I would check mesh origin and rotation is applied 😎😀 I hope this helps solve your issue ☺️

    This addon is not working for me, it imports in a weird way, I even had to manually edit some code lines to make it work (apparently the addon is not working with 4.0), but it still gives wrong results.
    I'm surprised how difficult it is for these two popular softwares to communicate with each other. Of course you can use FBX, but then you lose armatures, materials...

      Yeah I know I wish there was a better implementation. For the Blender 4.0+ it still does work perfectly for me using 3.6 though , you will always have issues with materials as there two different render engines and use different approaches for rendering , this is why only things like texture node will transfer (as long as you have materials set to be exported in S2UE) yeah totally agree this this is a pain and hoping USD really starts to get the work it needs all round for a better workflow 😊 thanks for your comment , from looking at epic games github I can see there is likely a new version of s2Ue to be posted soon 😄

    thanks a lot for that great tutorial... unfortunately, when I try to send geo over to unreal I get a message in unreal with 2 failed messages, ssaying "file is corrupted Cube.fbx... has anyonone encountered that problem?? am on UE 5.3 and Blender 4.0.1

      Yeah if you see the GitHub repo and look at the issues that’s why most are complaining about , no support for blender 4 yet the official maintainer said a few weeks ago ago he was gonna go
      And have a look at it , normally do push a new version in reasonable time ,hopefully soon.
      I have an alternative workflow that I’m currently in the middle of writing all caveats limitations on paper andonce done and have all notes will post videos and notes together when done , but atm there is a lot of stuff been worked on trying to find time anywhere possible atm 😁🔥

      Btw 3.6 installed is still a must have for most blender users as it is the only version that can read blender files previous to 3.6 and post 3.6 it’s like the converter of blend files from old to new 😎 so I have 3.6 installed with s2ue and use 4.0.2 mainly but jump into 3.6 when needed atm , not a good workaround by any means but it’s the one that works atm 😊🔥

      Yeah but only the most basic pbr setups no shading nodes that are specific to blender will translate over , you aslo need to make sure in the setting of s2ue export materials/textures is checked , no matter what way we go we will have to do material adjustments in unreal 😓

      You can send meshes with basic pbr setups using s2ue only the absolute basics will be transferred and likely need tweaked in unreal anyway can’t send procedural shaders from blender although expect this to happen soon with material X and USD being heavily developed upon 😎

      You can use shift + c only with the machin3 tools addon and the collection Pie enabled , it’s free and gives you loads of better pies and control tools than default , personally install it with every blender version , should of made it clearer only briefly mentioned it 😁

      Yeah textures but not shaders setups will translate from render engine to render engine , it will attempt to make instances like PBR setups but only basic modes will be translated ,
      Imo if you plan to render final pixels from unreal all texturing/shading should be done in the engine itself
      There’s limitations with every workflow and quick tip about this situation would be if you are working on large scenes but want to apply materials in UE to specific assets but have not finalised your scene in blender then make sure to remove the finished UE asset from your export collection in blender as this will repush the version of the asset from blender and overwrite the version that was textured in engine 😀 I hope this makes sense and can help you with your workflow 😃

      What way do you have setup ? Is the material data linked in blender ?
      if you are trying to bring all your materials into unreal form blender it will only succeed with basic pbr setup Base color , roughness etc but also in the blender shader editor there are certain nodes that just don’t transfer to unreal at-all so it’s always a good idea if you are using unreal as final pixel and layout tool to finalise your materials in engine , make a master material and then instances for all objects then once anything ngl has been textured positioned and finalised you remove that object from the blender Export collection to not overwrite it with the original blender material data 😃
      It’s not prefect but it’s the best we have atm , they are still working on this addon regularly so you will see improvements for sure 😃

      There is so many settings in s2ue and ways to achieve this , depends on what you want are you looking to animate in unreal or jsut simple keep the meshes/bones that are children combined going into unreal ?
      there is an option under pipeline>settings dialog>export>extensions
      Called combine assets with a drop-down of multiple options where you can use only child meshes
      There is also and option under
      Pipeline>setting dialog > import > animation
      If your doing something specific there might be a better way to do what your trying to achieve though . 😀

      @@vizualflow Thank you for the reply, I actually have a scene in blender where a guy jumps on a flying car and hangs on it. The character has a child of constraint parented to the car with the influence keyframed 0 when he is off the car and 1 when he hangs on the car as it moves. The car thrusters(rotated wheels) are also parented to the car body with a simple Ctrl + P parenting. I don't want to have to build the scene afresh in Unreal since I am still a beginner in unreal. I want to send my scene to unreal without having to do more extra stuff in unreal like parenting and animating. Thank you

      @@franklinfache yeah to be honest I haven’t used the add on like this yet with multiple rigs and constraints , if your animation is already baked in blender I would try send the lot to unreal and see what’s happening , the way I would usually approach this scenario is if I want final pixels to come out if unreal I would be pushing all the assets into the engine and use the constraints and animation tools in unreal as there new animation tools are quite powerful for this sort of workflow with constraints and multiple rigs , if you already got it animated and it’s not an option to make ctrl rigs and re animate then I would probably just got for the render in blender and adapt the workflow for next time , not the best answer sorry 😅
      I will be doing tests around when I get the chance anyway because intrigued now 😀

      The cause for this are either
      - you have multiple GitHub accounts and the one that’s linked is not the same as the autosigned in accountt

      Yes but shaders don’t , so basic materials will attempt to be created but if you use blender specific shaders nodes in the shader editor in blender they won’t transfer well to unreal render engine 😊

      Make sure you have export materials check and create new materials in s2ue , Sadly until USD / Material X is the standard workflow which is only really ramping up now ,, working between different render engines is jsut a pain in general , if you are familiar with substance and want things to look similar between applications texture wise I would use AcesCG color space with the same HDRI environment in substance blender and unreal then use substance as intermediary tool for texturing before going to unreal so blender > substance >unreal if you just want PBR material setups for each material in unreal I would suggest making a master material in unreal and creating instances of that master material for each material in your scene coming from blender , this way for each new material you don’t have to setup the nodes in unreal over and over again ,
      Will be making more videos about this topic aswell soon enough , I hope this helps thanks for your commment 😊

      Usualy this workflow is used before animation so camera setup texturing are done in engine once enitre scene blocked out you can export animation data through s2ue but you will need to bake the keyframes of the camera in bvlender and export the animation data, alterntively you can use USD workflow but will still require bake of the animation keyframes in blender.:)

      Nanite is virtualised geometry tech that epic released with UE5 it works with Lumen which is the real time dynamic global illumination feature that works with nanite 🤝😊 the optimal way for setting these meshes up is to separate everything that has to be lit with lumen into its own part 😀

      Do you by any chance know if there's the option to maintain Òbject Level Parenting when sending it to Unreal Engine? Either i can't find the option, or there isnt one@@vizualflow

      @Atimo133 if you use the option in send 2 unreal setting dialog under export , to combine child mesh it will combine every child into one before exporting this may not be what you want but there are more alternatives depending on the situation at hand like import collections as folders etc 😄 I Hope this helps 🤝

    404 error even with github link. Stupid to limit access this way. Might as well ask people to have a decoder ring from a cereal box and an impossible captcha to solve.

      Yeah I agree , Epic require this same linking of accounts to access the unreal engine source code aswell 🥲I had same issue with it before and many others aswell ,
      Check your email at the end of linking process it says you have to accept the invite from epic games via your email. 😎 I hope this solves it , if you still have trouble I can package the latest version of the add on and share it with you on Google drive or whatever you want 😃

      you must install machin3 tools for the collection pie menu ,it’s linked in the description and completely free 😊 alternatively you can use the M key in Object mode to move stuff but I prefer machin3 tools for my workflow 😃 I hope this helps

      @@michaelb1099 yeah I’m the add on setting you have control over which pies you enable and you can set the shortcuts but I would advidse leaving the shortcuts default there pretty intuitive anyway if you check my most recent video about setting up blender from defaults I talk a little bit more about machin3 tools setup just brushed over it here in this video sorry its quite deep addon and alot of stuff in there but you can jsut enable the collection pie in the addon setting and you should be good to go I also recommend using the cursor origin pie and the modes pie far better than default blender ☺️

      Hey there I can assure you this works for me and nearly every other person, I’m sorry you are having issues with getting this setup if you want to jump on a call I will personally walk you through and help you set it up ,
      By you saying github is not showing is it not showing you do mean on your epic games account linking section ? , if you read the send to unreal documentation you will see this is a totally legit Addon maintained by epic games and it also says in documentation that you need to link your GitHub to epic games account to get access to the repo . I’m jsut sharing info with nothing to gain from it and I doubt epic is involved in any scams either , once again sorry you are having issues
