I can think of a few things the Wii U does better: 1. Internet connection: Wii U: Once it's connected to the Internet, it's connected. Switch: Connection breaks every time it's turned off, needs therefore to be manually reconnected from the system menu every time it's turned on. Will only connect if it's not more than 5 metres or so from the router. 2. Overall handling: Wii U: Heavy, but also feels like heavy-duty. Switch: Makes a bit more of a flimsy impression, particularly the analog sticks on the Joy-Cons sometimes feel like they are about to fall off if you're not extra careful. 3. Camera and microphone: Wii U: Check. Switch: ... As for the people who always go "RIP WiiU." : As of August 2019, finding seven other players for a Splatoon match on the Wii U is usually just as quick as finding seven other players for a Splatoon 2 match on the Switch.
Everyone in here is arguing over whether the Wii U or Switch is better. I own both. I enjoy playing both for their own reasons. Call me a fanboy but I think both are great consoles. If you're deciding on which to buy, then base it upon your own needs. Saying one is better than the other is simply a matter of opinion. xD
The main problem with the switch is that it doesn’t support any type of backwards compatibility. With the Wii U, not only could people play their old wii games, but they could also (with a little modding) play literally any retro game they wanted through emulation. This is one of the main selling point for the Wii U today, and is probably the reason for why people are still buying it. (It’s definitely why I bought one)

The Nintendo Switch is pretty much what Nintendo had wanted since the development of the Wii U, but they didn't have the resources to make the Console "cost effective" thereby making drastic changes for what they originally intended and thus explains why when the Wii U was revealed at e3 2011, they marketed the device like a "Portable Console" similarly akin to what the Switch *ACTUALLY* is! But the marketing strategy was horrible, and so was the development phase for the Wii U. It mislead tons of Consumers thinking this is an "extension" to the Wii. Rather it being a different Console altogether! Also the architecture of the Wii U was a pain for game developers in hopes of using it for 3rd Party support! Only a few games like WatchDogs, Call of Duty: Ghost, and Resident Evil Revelations was made successful consumer wise for the Wii U in terms of 3rd party. Not to mention, the Gamepad only allowed you 10 feet away from the TV, it was like what *Classic Game Room mentions* "the Vectrex" or like the Sega Dreamcast. How even with the newer technology, the game Console was still underclass, and the least sold! So from what I understand, the Nintendo Switch is EXACTLY what they wanted to do for the 8th Gen release of their newest console. But due to cost managing, and other reasons, it turned out what they created for the Wii U.
or it's the culmination of the handheld and console merger that Iwata did in 2013. If you think the Gamepad simply allows you to play off the television, you've never heard of Super Mario Maker, or Splatoon, as neither allow you off-screen play, AND play integral parts, requiring the gamepad.
*+Scott S* Oh vey..... the reason why the Nintendo Wii U was a bombing to failure was because the lack of 3rd party games being made for it due to the architecture being "too complicated" for developers who do not work for Nintendo, to utilize. It's not because the graphics are not at par with the PS4 and Xbox One, but moreso of the lack 3rd party titles and Nintendo themselves were *NOT HAPPY* with the Wii U. Hence the reason why Nintendo focused on the 3ds moreso than the Wii U when it comes to games. The 3ds is what saved Nintendo in the 8th Gen! And trust me, in this 9th Gen of gaming, the Switch will give Nintendo is status back! WII U needed different name branding I an average person actually thought that WII U was just a newer Wii console :). It's hard to differentiate. I think that was one of the main reasons why people did not buy it.

It's kind of hard to compare an older console to a new console because you have to take into account that one didn't have as many technological opportunities as the other. The Wii U is great, the main reason I got it is because I played the hell out of the Wii in my childhood and I wanted to re-live those days. I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I found out that you could access the Wii menu through the Wii U.
When I want to play stuff like Battlefield, Witcher 3, or Rainbow 6 Siege Ill play it on my built PC. When I want to drink and play some games with my buddies, the Switch is perfect. Fun as Hell. If you want graphics go play PC. If you want local functionality with little headache, Nintendo Switch is top dog.
I'm homeshcooled and when im on break, I'll play Mario maker, and when my mom tells me that I'm distracting my brother, I'll turn off the TV and SWITCH to the gamepad! ha!
I got a Wii U when it was still VERY new, so you could IMAGINE how cool it made me. BUT, with it being new and in basically a ‘beta’ release, it broke VERY easily. So, me, and many others can confirm that it wasn’t the BEST of devices to use, because it tended to be kind of costly. Of course, that SOMETIMES would be expected with gaming consoles, most people thought the Wii U wouldn’t have that issue. I also really like some of the games the Wii U has to offer! For certain games though, you can’t just use the pro gamer controllers, you NEED the game pad, which is an issue if there are multiple people playing on the console. Now the switch.... I don’t own one, though I’d REALLY like to. I’ve used it many times though, so I have some things to say. The games on the switch are really great, and Nintendo included third party games, so that’s always a pleaser. The switch is also all around something VERY different, and came around in a time where I feel like any game console would have done VERY well. Marketing was VERY good, and with that, many good features have been shown off on the switch. I do have a few bugs to include, but nearly everyone is aware of them.

Cathamir - That’s true but, what makes the Wii U a better alternative is the ability to play Wii games in HD, and it has some amazing games on it too with a few exclusive hidden gems. The game pad also just feels better to play with for many people. The added weight and thickness makes it very comfortable to hold and the button placements are just perfect. The switch, at least for me, sometimes feels very cramped after playing for a while, unless you use the pro controller. The switch just has very sharp edges and the joycons are just way too small and flat to be actually comfortable to play with for long periods of time, while the Wii U just has the added thickness which really makes a difference.

actually the wii u had good games at launch like Mass Effect 3, Batman Arkham City, Assassin's Creed III, Call of duty Black ops 2, New super mario bros u, zombi u, tekken tag tournament and a bunch of others. the main problem with wii u was the fact that a lot of people mistaken the wii u for an accessory of the wii. when the xbox one and ps4 came out the fate of the wii u was already determined
Well there’s one thing I have to say about Wii U vs Switch. I considered the Wii U to be an HD version of the SNES and the Switch to be the HD version of the N64. The reason is that the Mario games helped me determine that even though other Nintendo games may not be thought of that way. Wii U had a Mario 3D platform, but it wasn’t traditional for 3D as it was reach for the goal and press a button to make Mario go fast. The launch title was New Super Mario Bros U which is a CGI version of Super Mario World supposedly. Now for the Switch being 64 like, I know that the Switch is pretty much all of its Nintendo predecessors put into one console, but with Super Mario Odyssey, it’s Mario in a sandbox again with no more reaching for the goal and minimal 2D sections. I’m glad that they included that but without overdoing it. Upon it, SMO usually doesn’t require a separate run button it just depends on how you control the analogue stick, you can go through paintings and have the freedom to explore various 3D worlds. For Nintendo Switch, change it, change it, you can change the system!

From what I’ve seen so far the Wii U offers me way more games I’m into compared to the Switch which is like 3 games. I love the fact I can play older Nintendo games on the Wii U. At least 4 Zelda titles. GameCube/Wii/Wii U/ and older generation games. And they’re not expensive nowadays.

But Skyrim is 5 years old and will cost full price on Switch. It's worthless without mods anyway. Switch is a fantastic little system (great to own alongside a PC as it offers something different, unlike the PS4 which is basically a really shit version of the PC I already own) but I don't see the point in re-releasing games like Skyrim on it. Yeah, you can play it on the go - but most people who'd want to play Skyrim have already played it to death at this point.

Looking at this from a business and basically a logical standpoint it makes every sense why they ditched the Wii U: It was a complete failure in sales and marketing. It makes sense to focus on the switch as it's a better in every way

First impressions are everything, and unfortunately that means the Wii U was doomed to fail. It required a huge day 1 system update just to get the console running. This was very unusual for a Nintendo console. Many Wii U systems got bricked in the process, and the console was so slow that it took 30 seconds just to load the settings app. Then you had a poor launch lineup of games and confusing controller setups. New Super Mario Bros U did not support the pro controller at launch. Support was only patched in later, and you couldn’t use the Wii U gamepad for proper multiplayer. The gamepad player was forced to act as a support player. People talk about the confusing “brand name” as though gamers couldn’t tell the difference between a Wii and Wii U. I know there is a lot of clueless gamers and parents but most of us knew the difference. These are just excuses people make to overlook the bigger failures. The Wii was a great name. The Wii U was not. The Wii also had a very straightforward control scheme. On the Wii U, everything went through the gamepad and THAT is what killed the system. Your main controller cannot have a 2 hour battery life and because the gamepad was so expensive to manufacture, the Wii U never went on sale. Plus with the 3Ds being portable, Nintendo was dividing their time between two different systems. They finally got it right with the Switch. It is not a perfect system by any means, but it is much better than the Wii U. I say this as someone who loves my Wii U and owned 2 of them.
panicman10 It's a brand new console, the PS4 and Xbox had the same thing. People compare apples to oranges but never look at how new things always start the same. There are many games coming out this year like MARIO Kart and Slatoon, Skyrim, and many more. I think we have to wait for E3 to least be concerned. If no 3rd party's announce games than that concern is real. I hear that COD, overwatch is possible. The Switch isn't really limited by hardware so Nintendo has a pretty good system on their hands. They don't really have to compete with Microsoft or Sony due to the Switch being something entirely different. It's the laptop of the home consoles. You make it what ever you want. A portable or home console. For me it's mainly a portable. I got my extra charger and I play Zelda on lunch or on the bus. I play Zelda maybe 40% of the time at home because I play on my PC where all the 3rd party games. To all PC gamers I recommend a Switch but I would wait for games to be announced. I'm excited to expand and play all my favorite games where ever I am in the world. Unfortunately laptops have shorter battery life and are hard to take with you on the go.

The other problem with 3rd party games is that the CPU was an IBM chip instead of a conventional intel or AMD x86 chip, so when porting a game over there was the extra work of working with an entirely different architecture.

I love the Wii U. I really really do. But the Switch looks so good. There are so many great games: Smash Ultimate, Pokken Tournament DX, Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. (Not a Zelda fan so don’t say BOTW. Also Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee don’t look too great.) Edit: Unfortunately I don’t have a Switch. I’m basing these games based on what I’ve seen in trailers and others opinions.

It's not because the graphics are not at par with the PS4 and Xbox One, but moreso of the lack 3rd party titles and Nintendo themselves were *NOT HAPPY* with the Wii U. Hence the reason why Nintendo focused on the 3ds moreso than the Wii U when it comes to games.
The 3ds is what saved Nintendo in the 8th Gen!

WII U needed different name branding I an average person actually thought that WII U was just a newer Wii console :). It's hard to differentiate. I think that was one of the main reasons why people did not buy it.

It's kind of hard to compare an older console to a new console because you have to take into account that one didn't have as many technological opportunities as the other. The Wii U is great, the main reason I got it is because I played the hell out of the Wii in my childhood and I wanted to re-live those days. I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I found out that you could access the Wii menu through the Wii U.
When I want to play stuff like Battlefield, Witcher 3, or Rainbow 6 Siege Ill play it on my built PC. When I want to drink and play some games with my buddies, the Switch is perfect. Fun as Hell. If you want graphics go play PC. If you want local functionality with little headache, Nintendo Switch is top dog.

I got a Wii U when it was still VERY new, so you could IMAGINE how cool it made me. BUT, with it being new and in basically a ‘beta’ release, it broke VERY easily. So, me, and many others can confirm that it wasn’t the BEST of devices to use, because it tended to be kind of costly. Of course, that SOMETIMES would be expected with gaming consoles, most people thought the Wii U wouldn’t have that issue. I also really like some of the games the Wii U has to offer! For certain games though, you can’t just use the pro gamer controllers, you NEED the game pad, which is an issue if there are multiple people playing on the console.
Now the switch.... I don’t own one, though I’d REALLY like to. I’ve used it many times though, so I have some things to say. The games on the switch are really great, and Nintendo included third party games, so that’s always a pleaser. The switch is also all around something VERY different, and came around in a time where I feel like any game console would have done VERY well. Marketing was VERY good, and with that, many good features have been shown off on the switch. I do have a few bugs to include, but nearly everyone is aware of them.

Cathamir - That’s true but, what makes the Wii U a better alternative is the ability to play Wii games in HD, and it has some amazing games on it too with a few exclusive hidden gems. The game pad also just feels better to play with for many people. The added weight and thickness makes it very comfortable to hold and the button placements are just perfect. The switch, at least for me, sometimes feels very cramped after playing for a while, unless you use the pro controller. The switch just has very sharp edges and the joycons are just way too small and flat to be actually comfortable to play with for long periods of time, while the Wii U just has the added thickness which really makes a difference.

Well there’s one thing I have to say about Wii U vs Switch. I considered the Wii U to be an HD version of the SNES and the Switch to be the HD version of the N64. The reason is that the Mario games helped me determine that even though other Nintendo games may not be thought of that way. Wii U had a Mario 3D platform, but it wasn’t traditional for 3D as it was reach for the goal and press a button to make Mario go fast. The launch title was New Super Mario Bros U which is a CGI version of Super Mario World supposedly. Now for the Switch being 64 like, I know that the Switch is pretty much all of its Nintendo predecessors put into one console, but with Super Mario Odyssey, it’s Mario in a sandbox again with no more reaching for the goal and minimal 2D sections. I’m glad that they included that but without overdoing it. Upon it, SMO usually doesn’t require a separate run button it just depends on how you control the analogue stick, you can go through paintings and have the freedom to explore various 3D worlds. For Nintendo Switch, change it, change it, you can change the system!

From what I’ve seen so far the Wii U offers me way more games I’m into compared to the Switch which is like 3 games. I love the fact I can play older Nintendo games on the Wii U. At least 4 Zelda titles. GameCube/Wii/Wii U/ and older generation games. And they’re not expensive nowadays.
Now you can play a lot of games on the switch. And they serve as better versions or ports to Wii U games. Plus I just want to know, do you have a switch? I just want to know wether you are in denial or not because you can’t get one.

But Skyrim is 5 years old and will cost full price on Switch. It's worthless without mods anyway. Switch is a fantastic little system (great to own alongside a PC as it offers something different, unlike the PS4 which is basically a really shit version of the PC I already own) but I don't see the point in re-releasing games like Skyrim on it. Yeah, you can play it on the go - but most people who'd want to play Skyrim have already played it to death at this point.

First impressions are everything, and unfortunately that means the Wii U was doomed to fail. It required a huge day 1 system update just to get the console running. This was very unusual for a Nintendo console. Many Wii U systems got bricked in the process, and the console was so slow that it took 30 seconds just to load the settings app. Then you had a poor launch lineup of games and confusing controller setups. New Super Mario Bros U did not support the pro controller at launch. Support was only patched in later, and you couldn’t use the Wii U gamepad for proper multiplayer. The gamepad player was forced to act as a support player.
People talk about the confusing “brand name” as though gamers couldn’t tell the difference between a Wii and Wii U. I know there is a lot of clueless gamers and parents but most of us knew the difference. These are just excuses people make to overlook the bigger failures. The Wii was a great name. The Wii U was not. The Wii also had a very straightforward control scheme. On the Wii U, everything went through the gamepad and THAT is what killed the system. Your main controller cannot have a 2 hour battery life and because the gamepad was so expensive to manufacture, the Wii U never went on sale. Plus with the 3Ds being portable, Nintendo was dividing their time between two different systems. They finally got it right with the Switch. It is not a perfect system by any means, but it is much better than the Wii U. I say this as someone who loves my Wii U and owned 2 of them.

There are many games coming out this year like MARIO Kart and Slatoon, Skyrim, and many more. I think we have to wait for E3 to least be concerned. If no 3rd party's announce games than that concern is real. I hear that COD, overwatch is possible. The Switch isn't really limited by hardware so Nintendo has a pretty good system on their hands. They don't really have to compete with Microsoft or Sony due to the Switch being something entirely different. It's the laptop of the home consoles. You make it what ever you want. A portable or home console. For me it's mainly a portable.
I got my extra charger and I play Zelda on lunch or on the bus. I play Zelda maybe 40% of the time at home because I play on my PC where all the 3rd party games.
To all PC gamers I recommend a Switch but I would wait for games to be announced. I'm excited to expand and play all my favorite games where ever I am in the world. Unfortunately laptops have shorter battery life and are hard to take with you on the go.

The other problem with 3rd party games is that the CPU was an IBM chip instead of a conventional intel or AMD x86 chip, so when porting a game over there was the extra work of working with an entirely different architecture.

I love the Wii U. I really really do. But the Switch looks so good. There are so many great games: Smash Ultimate, Pokken Tournament DX, Mario Odyssey, Super Mario Party, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. (Not a Zelda fan so don’t say BOTW. Also Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee don’t look too great.)
