    *DW - Heaven Sent will be up a few days after Patrons get early access to the edited version of it on Sunday. Toughest Doctor Who edit ever.*

      So easy to miss it as we all stop at the credits, so as not to be spoiled for a next week trailer..

    40:03 this is something I notice in a lot of Moffat's characters. This idea of someone who is passively suicidal so they don't make attempts against their life but they will get themselves into trouble or won't fight for their life. It turns up in his work on Doctor Who a couple of times, mostly with the Doctor himself but you can definitely see it in Clara. i've always seen the Doctor's psuedo-death when he flies the pandorica into the tardis, he seems to jump at the chance and seems pretty content with ending his life that way. Then series 6 revolves around his death and he has to be convinced to be helped out of that. Or the Doctor arguing with river that he should be the one sacrificing himself in Silence in the Library. But this idea dates back all the way to his first show, Press Gang where one of the main characters, Lynda is asked "you're making some odd mistakes. How hard are you really trying to stay alive?" it's absolutely suicidal and I always find it a really interesting aspect of these characters. (btw Press Gang is excellent, any chance of you watching any non-Doctor Who Moffat shows?)

      Be something to have a very interesting conversation with him about, I love the motifs and themes he uses across his works and like knowing what makes him tick and his thought process behind things.

    • @isaacwright8211
      @isaacwright8211 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lucasdolding6924 There's a really lovely authenticity to his writing that is unashamedly reiterative and unabashedly autobiographical where you do see a lot of ideas crop up time and time again but only insofar as he thinks about them time and time again. So you get these really interesting progressions in his themes that start from when he was in his late 20s to his most recent work and that's so compelling in a way that just can't be manufactured. And because of that I've always been really curious about intentionality on a lot of his episodes themes whether some are unconscious or it's all very conscious or what so having a conversation about a lot of that is something I'd absolutely love to do.

    ugh those last few scenes get my every time. clara’s “why can’t i be like you” and jenna’s delivery of that line specifically hits me hard. as well as both her and capaldi’s performances throughout all those last scenes. best lead cast of the show!!!! great video.. and the next two episodes are some of my favourites

    This is THE episode, THE episode. It's so so beautiful, the cinematography, the acting, especially Capaldi, as usual, his eyes does wonders.

    Capaldi is definitely the greatest actor to play The Doctor, some of his scenes are just so well done. Next episode is the peak of Doctor Who in my opinion, gonna be an awesome reaction!

    We had the "advantage" in the UK of knowing that Jenna was leaving this season, but naturally we all assumed she was leaving at the end. This was a real shock and a hugely effective gut punch, sold perfectly by Capaldi.

    • @mmattson8947
      @mmattson8947 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A nice counter-point to everyone knowing that Jenna was going to be a companion late in S7, and the surprise when she appeared in the season opener (and then the double-twist that she wasn't a companion then).

    You're right that in many ways this is a logical conclusion to the particular brand of doctor-esque behavior that Clara has been emulating throughout series 9 and a bit in series 8.
    I think the most common parallel that's been drawn is to the episode 'Mummy on the Orient Express', when the doctor takes Maisie's(character, not actress) place in order to confront the Foretold, with the full intent solving the riddle and weaseling out of the death. Worked out for him, didn't work out for Clara here. Like he says, he's just a bit less breakable, and has a slightly better idea of how far he can push things.

    It definitely hit me pretty hard. Mostly, i think, because i missed or brushed off the death flags. I kept thinking "wow, look at her go! She really is like the Doctor!".
    So i aas in shock and thats why it hit me as hard. Because of that the multiple shots were effective for me as well as it elongated the death and helped me see what it was showing me.

    good episode although kind of overshadowed by the greatness of the next two but that would be the case for any episode really. this is really an epic three partner even if not officially recognised as one. i think this whole arc is even better on rewatch although you've already picked up on most things. very difficult to talk about the episode without spoilers but i love the dialogue between 12 and clara at the end. really excited to see the reactions to the next two.

    I have weird mixed feelings about this one. The performances in the goodbye scene are gorgeous and heartbreaking but it's an odd uneven story. I also can't stand the editing on the actual death scene. It just feels gratuitous and weirdly objectifying.

    Next episode is a meandering piece of posturing that attempts to capture something too abstract to really empathise with, who's with me!
