Not only was this shot in one take, they actually recorded/filmed TWO songs in this single take -- the other being "Rivers". You have already heard "Rivers", but in a different performance where Apocalyptica joined them for it. The "Rivers" version from the "Omega Alive" project is quite different. It's cool because the song totally bleeds into this "Once upon a Nightmare", you can hear the trails or reverb continuing at the beginning of the video you just saw. They should ideally be seen back-to-back.
not sure it was a one take though, before ending to the piano the steady cam fades to black (or its just the light... but before we could see simone i the complete dark) when he passes simone for the last time
They take you on a journey in every song. And Simone's voice on this... OMG. You won't hear music like this on any radio including SiriusXM. We are blessed to be able to hear them. PS Yesterday (Jan 17) was Simone's birthday. Happy Birthday Simone!!!!
If there really was a place called Heaven, this is the music that would be playing. You are right about Epica, they pretty much never repeat themselves and their diversity is insane.
Great reaction! One of my favorite Epica ballads although I think every Epica ballad is one of my favorites. Lyrics by Simone inspired by the German fairy tale of the Alder King. To quote Simone: “This isn’t a typical ballad; it’s melancholic and has more of a themed vocal going through it than a chorus. I’m a big fan of classic fairy tales and the lyrics were inspired by a dark German tale about the Alder King, or Erlking, who steals children’s souls. A lot of times, parents don’t take their children seriously, especially when it comes to seeing monsters in the closet so it’s a dark twist on fairy tales. It’s symbolic of being stuck in a life without a happy ending and how our innocence is taken away from us as soon as we’re born. ” I love the use of the eerie man's voice as the Alder King low in the background enticing a young traveler to deviate from his path through the woods with promises of sweet games and care by his beautiful daughters, only to steal his soul. Simone's heart achingly beautiful vocals complete he storytelling. The tale is a great analogy for our journey from childhood to adulthood and all the enticements that can lure ourselves and our children from a productive path to one of misery and destruction. As others have mentioned this was a one shot recording of Rivers (performed in a unique acapella style) that flowed uninterrupted into this song. Filmed by their videography Jens the Panda using a similar one shot recording style that he used in their Rivers video from Chile. Love his work.
did you notice that everything was shot in one take, with one camera movement? It's really very beautiful. The guitar and piano duet at the beginning of the song is an improvisation; the original studio version of this song has a long orchestral introduction.
I knew you would love this one. What a song. A work of art. WE NEED OMEGA ALIVE DANIEL, PLEASE 😂❤ You will experience this level of performance throughout the entire show 🎉
Glad you did this one as it is my favourite Epica performance and I have to put in a request for a full concert listen to Omega Alive. It is simply THE best.
The ease with which Simone switches from contemporary singing to classical singing and vice versa never ceases to amaze me! She is incredibly wonderful, one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard in my life! I love you forever Sisi 🥰
Yes! This is sooooo good! On the album there is a beautiful orchestral opening for this song, but somehow this Guitar/Piano intro is even better! Simone takes us all higher than high with this one! I also vote for a full reaction to the Omega Alive show!
As you mentioned in the description, first Epica with Floor (Sancta Terra) and then Consign to Oblivion with Mark's voice, which scared me a lot at first, with every Epica song it got better, now I'm a huge fan of Epica, at their 25th anniversary concert I had the pleasure of hearing the song live in this version.
here we go come onnnn!!! one of my all-time fave epica tracks brooo the build-up, the increasing intensity, story-telling, musical complexity and simone's divine, unfiltered vocals drifting flawlessly between TWO different vocal styles - INSANE! they are insane. love to see your epica reactions, let's keep this journey going, man there's still so much more to discover, especially since you enjoyed their acoustic side! big up!!!
The actual 20 year anniversary concert was in 2022, I was there. I also will be at both concerts this year with the full orchestra and choir, but that has nothing to do with any anniversary.
Epica, Nightwish, Ayreon - three sources of phenomenal music and with outstanding singers and musicians. I have just bought the DVD of the concert Omega Alive 2021 and do not regret it. Also I am very much looking forward to Simone's solo album. It is already on my wish list.
Hey Aries, Great reaction as ever. Yeah, Nightwish and Epica are truly very special. Just wondering how your friends react if you bombard them with Nightwish and Epica.
I love more the old Nightwish Band with Toumas Holopainen Keybord Empu Vuirinen Gitarr Tarja Turunen Vocal s Jukka Nervalainen Drums And Sami Vanska Bass

They probably had to have a guy just guiding the cameraman around that wall of fire :)
@@happy_burgerthey actually did
...and thank God they DID make this version. I could listen to that intro all day long.
its not a one take, it fades at the last shot of the piano, when it moves around simone. , it fades to black then end up at the piano.
I have only seen EPICA once. that was last year,
being in the same room as Simone when she is singing was mind blowing
I knew you would love this one. What a song. A work of art.

Man, that moment around 6:11 when she effortlessly slips into operatic just for a second, always gets me

Hi Daniel, you'll enjoy the album version of Once Upon a Nightmare, it's very beautiful, that opening section is all orchestral 🙃
I have this DVD.
It got me through lockdown.
Best $60 I ever spent.
By the way, Simone turned 39 yesterday or today 🥳
