How the WWE Failed Roman Reigns (2014-2020)

- Roman Reigns since the beginning of his WWE career was always destined to be the top star in Pro Wrestling. Weather it was because of his family roots, the look, the charisma, or all of the above.. Roman Reigns was always supposed to be the face of the WWE. Now 11 years from his WWE debut as a member of the Shield, Roman has definitely done it and lived up to all the expectations. However.. for a long time, it seemed like he was destined to fail. Not because of his skills or anything he lacked, but it was the WWE that honestly was doing him dirty. With stupid booking, horrible feuds, and rushing his rise to the top. The WWE before Roman himself took matters into his own hands, left him as a flop.. Lets take a look back at those 6 years, from 2014 until 2020.. and How the WWE Failed Roman Reigns
Also just want to shoutout my boy @shyguyworks who helped me out with this video, compiling footage for me. He is super talented at making WWE edits. He just made one for Seth Rollins and its a banger, check him out ❤www.youtube.com/@shyguyworks/videos

Much love bro, thank you! Really proud to have been a part of this :)
I still don’t care about or like Roman he still over pushed he still overrated. And he is just the worst people like him noe just cause he turned heel I never liked him and I never will
You should make a video about you booking Roman Reigns’ run from 2014-2020.
They should have had him tur heel after undertaker match have him win title that summer and created the bloodline

@@pleaseshutup7053 No they didn't, majority of fans were rooting for his opponents knowing Cena was gonna win
They should have turned him heel the night after WM33. Instead of saying “this is my yard now” he should have said “Acknowledge Me”
Definitely 👏👏👏, would've been dope
That would've been sick
I’ve been saying this for years, that was the perfect time for the company to turn Roman heel. Just imagine if we had the tribal chief gimmick at that time that would’ve been phenomenal. It would’ve amazing to see, but nope, WWE for some idiotic reason kept him as the corny, bland and uncharismatic babyface with the fans resented and that’s all because of that idiot Vince McMahon. Way to go Vince, way to go.
But in hindsight, what was wrong about the time he did. What would have been improved if he turn heel earlier. This run of his has been going great.
Tbh this is my yard and just leaving was perfect
Ironically, Roman's redemption arc as a villian is so much more influential and admiring to the youth. Anybody can be a face, but a good/intimidating heel is very rare.
I totally disagree, it's harder to be a good babyface, it's too easy to piss people off now. Everybody seems to love heels.
@@docoak17 yes this is true. People grow bored, tired of baby face super heroes(Hogan in the 80s, Super Cena) with no human factor, story arc, lack of struggle, a reason to go to the dark side despite it being for the right reason(example Thanos) or anti hero.
This is what made Austin, CM Punk, and The Rock for examples compelling back in the day.
This is also what happens when WWE uses TV writers as opposed to wrestling bookers who can make storylines that make sense and allow the wrestler to improvise and tweak their own characters.
People prefer heel Champs these days
🤣how is it hard to be basically an asshole smh
@@docoak17except Roman is not a heel. He is a Machiavellian villain . He has transended the heel domain quite easily.
According to Heyman in a recent interview, the Baron Corbin feud is what broke Roman.
That feud is what made him put his foot down and demand that he turn heel.
Baron Corbin is the reason The Tribal Chief exists. Think about that.
Soooo we should thank Baron Corbin 😂 bitch need to go back to the LoneWolf gimmick since he the reason behind gimmick changes
Whilst I doubt this is true, if it is then it must have been a long road for roman to finally realise that face him would never get over

I’ve always said that the heat Roman got was more so directed at Vince and the booking than Roman. Yeah sure he got the brunt of it all but it was more because it seemed like Vince ran the shows with this “you’ll take this and you’ll like it” mentality. The material was nothing like what we loved (or loved to hate) growing up. Edge, Jericho, Brock, Big Show, JBL, Booker, Eddie, the list went on and on. There was no one guy. Even with super Cena, there was Edge, there was Randy, there was Triple H and Shawn. RVD and Jeff Hardy. But with Roman? Everybody had fall to him and there was no legit reason as to why aside because this is what Vince wants. Bray, Balor, Samoa Joe, didn’t matter who you were unless your name was Lesnar. Still find it so baffling that Reigns and Lesnar did something no other wrestler has done ever no matter how talented they are. And do you know how bad you gotta be at booking to get the crowd to cheer Baron Corbin over Reigns? Vince made every word Punk said about him and the company in that pipe bomb true. Worst part is, to this day it still reigns(see what I did there?) true. Just the sight of Vince at a show can ruin the entire production. That man showed his face once and we have not seen or heard from Bray Wyatt since. Now, there’s all this talk about injury and what not and him possibly returning but I think this is one hell of a coincidence and I think he don’t wanna come back but that’s just me.

Roman Reigns’ run between 2014-2020 was unfortunate because he was pushed at the worst possible time(s) and WWE gave him crap material that made him a goofball babyface rather than a naturally charismatic silent badass. He had the look, the natural aura, he was great in the ring, had a more edgy look/presentation than the overly kid-friendly Cena and was improving at a fast rate. Vince made Roman! Years of getting booed, "F you Roman chants" he never gave up on him, kept pushing
Let's be honest here, the only reason why Roman is great as it is now is because of the rise of AEW and fans who turns in WWE at 2019, because the scariest things is if it wasn't by these two factors, we might still get a Big Dog and Babyface Roman instead of The Tribal Chief and Heel Roman.
And I literally thought that it was John Cena who was going to be the most hated wrestling still I do remember how bad it was for Roman Reigns
John Cena isn't really that hated. Cena is Cena.
At least Cena got over organically (as the Dr. of Thuganomics) and was charismatic so he could navigate the hate.
Make a Part 2 - How the WWE finally succeeded with Roman Reigns (2020-2024)
The only thing that was good for him prior to his Tribal Chief run was when he was with the Shield. Everything between that, he was awful. “Suffering succotash?” Okay, first of all, that’s Sylvester’s catchphrase. And secondly, what the heck is succotash? But the worst moment for him was when he beat the Undertaker at WrestleMania 33. Nobody liked him after that. Remember that Raw after? He came out and he got the kind of heat that not even the most evil heel would ever want. They booed him, the cussed at him, they chanted other Superstars’ names, it was terrible for him.
They tried way too much to get him over with that McMahon family rivalry from 2015-2016 and 2019

That's your perception
That’s cause Vince viewed the big dog as his pet which he can make him do anything in his power
Yeah, bc the tribal chief persona is closer to who Joe actually is in real life which is why he's over now
@@cmsjr2001 True, i always think that tye Big Dog is really Vince McMahon, using Joe as his avatar and Roman Reigns as the user name in the past.

What left a sour taste in peoples mouth about Roman in 2014-2020 was the big void of stars we had because no one was getting the chance to shine like Roman was. Everyone felt like they were being sacrificed solely for Romans benefit. The 2 stars that I guess made it thru were Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens. @@hustler2001 WWE would often edit the boos out and replace them with cheers for the televised product, I didn't hate Roman Reigns, his run 2015 to 2017 was somewhat good, but even I have to admit, 2018 and 2019 were complete crap, he had pointless feuds with Corbin, Bryan, Joe, have Dog food smeared all over him, it wasn't a very nice period
fr
I always believed that reign’s should’ve been the one to betray
Shield not Rollins and join authority
SAME!!! I am still surprised a little to less people think and say that.
Yeaa that would've been sick, a heel reigns from the start
Alot of people were picking on Reigns. He ALWAYS delivered. He always was a great in ring story teller. It was Cool for the nerds to boo the cool guy. Imo, Roman was picked on by IWC..... Nothing he's doing now surprised me....
It wasn’t just the IWC he would legitimately get booed out of the building constantly.
@@acceptable1609 not true at all. I've been to shows.... House shows did not boo him like that.... It was the being on tv effect and it became extremely popular to boo, just to "be heard"...
He always had it but the people hatwd that he was going to be another Super Cena but the Tribal Chief is easily one of the best WWE characters of all time.
His promos were terrible tf you mean he always delivered
@@pleaseshutup7053 see exactly what im talking about.... His promos were not all terrible
The worst part about the run was all the stat padding they did for him and the many of superstars momentums sacraficed to help build the Lesnar vs Reigns fued.
The Reigns-Lesnar feud is just cringe every single time. They need to put this one to rest and never open up that grave again. The last match they had was a decent one, but the whole feud was just terribly bad, and they all knew it...except for Vince who kept it going in spite of the fans because he knew his crew would say yes or get fired.
Lowkey could have worked as a face if he kept his silent assassin gimmick and they slowy pushed him
Hot take: That silent assassin role Roman was playing made him look a lot like Taker in '97-98. (to me, anyway) And that's what worked for Taker all those years. He'd cut some decent promos but most of his dialog was just one or two threatening lines, and the rest was just kicking ass. That's what I saw in those years of Roman as well during the shield. Not the same, but similar. And I definitely agree that the slow build would have been great. But Vince got his rapey, gropey hands on Roman's career and defiled it for 6 years. lol
@@BeastNationXIV this is a interesting take but I like it can definitely see the similarities. A shame that they over pushed him when if they waited maybe even for like a year or 2 they could have had there next great baby face

One of the best wrestling creater I've ever listened to.
In 2014 he was cheered. It all started the moment CM Punk made that “You gotta make Roman Reigns look strong” comment. And the Daniel Bryan fanboys were a cancer too
Glad to see a video from u.U posted rarely nowadays, but here for every clip from you.
My favorite runs from Roman Reigns were 2012-2013 Shield Reigns and 2020 to now Tribal Chief.
Well sooner or later, you needed to address this thing about Roman Reigns.
Perhaps on the same level of his cousin, him and Rock have the best character redesign/revivals of all time.
Roman Reigns Look and presentation was already top Tier, he just needed fans to be on his side. He was gettin better and Better.
Ever since I saw roman in the shield I knew he was gonna be the guy and I stuck with him
He basically went to WWE Creative and said: “all right, that’s it! Y’all are my bittches now!”
The Roman Reigns run before 2020

The Rock helps Roman - The fans boo The Rock
Seth steals Roman's chance - The Fans were happy

As a day one Shield & RR fan I can appreciate this video of straight facts and seeing The Comeback after The Comeback. Bloodline storyline is one of the best ever in WWE
this is a certified WrestlinGifs masterpiece
Great vid pav! Keep it up
They really should’ve brought the tribal chief gimmick after WM33 lowkey
Should’ve turned heel night after mania when he beat Taker.
Been waiting for this one 👏🏽
I 100% believed Roman's downfall was because CM Punk after his exit told everybody he had to make Roman look strong, and how Roman wasn't picked by him when he was coming up with the Shield
That’s one of the things that added fuel to the fire
It was never a downfall. Lmaooo that’s what y’all don’t understand 😂
@@whopp1069 shiiid I remember specifically the moment that interview came out and the boos that came with it
Yeah that was a big part. But hey, Punk just told everybody what Vince was doing, while screwing him over. Not his fault. That's Vince's fault, and all those yes men working for Vince. Folks started to scapegoat Roman though, and keep calling Vince a "genius" like he wasn't the author of a lot of those dumb ideas. lol
@@whopp1069lol exactly, downfall is quite an overused word
The fact that Vince made him wear lenses just to make him look good is just down right sad
The same Vince who puts 2 belts on him

Whats crazy is... The blue print was in FCW/NXT...That "its roman reigns time" promo wad literally tribal cheif shit 8 hears prior
ITS A GOOD DAY WHEN GIFS POST!!!!
The hate started with Daniel Bryan crybabies after the 2014 Royal Rumble
I might be unpopular but I always liked Roman. Even in the very begginning of his solo career he showed that he has alot of potential. His very first match vs Brock was da best of them all. He had amazing feud against Aj Styles back in the day. He mainly got that not well deserved Cena/Superman type hate. Ofc he was loved by Vince but always had something special in him that finally erupted.
Same here
Kinda weird how quickly they realized the need for a heel turn with the rock and when how long it took for Roman. You’d expect the same company that built up someone of the same bloodline as Roman to realize it sooner (especially the rock to maybe bring it up after it happening to himself).
Vince knew it . His entire career was booked to perfection. He don’t become this without that is what you guys don’t understand lmaoooo he was green. Even then he was MASSIVELY over he needed those years to grow into the tribal chief could be a better path when it’s all said and done his career is gonna go down as an all time great shield all the way till his career is over. People booed cena too. What WWE does is what happens and why we see Roman at the level he currently is . Gotta love it it’s what’s they do. Failure? Never. He was as selling out manias before tribal chief days go look back at his masterclass at 31. Love it. Nobody in the industry compares to a thing he is doing. This is why WWE continues to dominate this industry year in and year out they create the worlds only true stars in this industry. 😍 it was just perfect booking .
Roman needs at least 3 to 5 more great years for us to forget about 2014-20. Then we can analyze his whole career about how great he really was. You can't call anyone the greatest or even one of the greatest for just good 3 years, especially when you have 6 shit years before that.
Before they failed numerous of times, now they achieved...
When he did the change over Wrestling shouldve took cues from Undertaker. Undertaker said only what needed said, he just showed up to chew bubblegum an kick@$$ an he was all out of bubblegum.
Then you got Sting in WCW that said little but wasnt a heel, you had Stone Cold Steve who used slogans, said what needed said drank his drank and wasnt a heel.
Roman could've did a turn by saying to everybody that Enough is Enough.. leaving, not being seen, an then showing up to help others out, actions speak louder than words. Then he takes on heels an says little, maybe asks the Crowd "You wajt some More?" Then walking out. WWE didnt need to push Roman so fast as a face, they couldve built up to it.
Bro seriously this might be the best video you ever made no kap this shit shit was so true everything 💯
Oh how I missed your videos bro. Thank You.
Guys I bet Hogan told Roman to turn heel.
“Couldve went back and stopped 911.” LMFAOO
Ive been watching WWE religiously since 2009 I've seen the era of SuperCena at it height, Punks 434 day run, Rocks return in 2011 and 3 year WM stretch, Brock murdering people from 2013-2018, and the streak dying. But, nothing hurt my soul watching how Vince dropped the ball with Roman for 5 years. I remember loving the build for Roman & Brock in 2015 then you see the last image Vince gave us on the Go Home show for WM 31 and that's where they starting doing him dirty and it didn't help they tried pushing him during the peak hype for Daniel Bryan. I still say to this day Vince should've turned Roman heel in 2017; Roman in the closing moments of that match with Taker, combined with Taker "retiring", and the 10 minutes of boos the night after just for him to be a babyface....how does that make sense. I kinda knew the Corbin feud was what made Roman put his foot down because that when I was frustrated at Vince then 2020 happened and the rest is history for the better.
WWE was hoping having Cena roast Roman would get fans to cheer for Roman but instead it got fans to like Cena even more
It was abundantly clear that Vince McMahon was getting frustrated by the fans not liking Roman so he gave Roman every single storyline imaginable except a heel turn 😂😂
People complain about Cena but he was an expert on the Mic with unbelievable improv and he was very well liked before he became the face that it made sense he be picked for a while at least. It also took over a year for him to slowly transition from the Doctor of Thuganomics to the Marine superhero character. It felt more like he was growing up over time than an overnight thing. He would still behave like a thug with different clothes and you could see his outfit change 1 day at a time.
I mean, I can understand that the noticeable change in Roman from a silent badass to a cornball was one reason but let's not kid ourselves here, the crowd became more infuriated and turned against him because they felt his spot should be given to someone like Daniel Bryan, look no further than the 2015 Royal Rumble
But in India he became a superstar for fans....who fall into McMahon's plans.....I was 12 years old..... and was his huge fan 💀
Oh wow, 10mins ago. This is the earliest I've ever been.
Roman by himself: trash
Roman in a faction: good
I think during this period, Roman was asking why the fans weren't acknowleging him.
