I have too much gear myself, and you're right. It causes anxiety. You can't even choose which one to use, ending up in using just a couple and ignoring the rest. Maybe keep a single one from each category (one drum machine, one sampler, one polysynth, one mono or smaller 25/37 key synth.

@@WoodyPianoShack another way to do it is to work the way studios work. Decide in advance what sources you want for a project, maybe limiting it to 2-4 sources, and similar for effects/processors. Then stick to that palette for a decent length of time, a season or two maybe - long enough to produce a full EP or even an album say. The limitation is useful, and forces you to learn those instruments, and get the most out of them. The faff of selling things can be a major distraction. And there's plenty of great instruments, that you can great stuff from. Selling can just lead to more buying later ...

The Roland D-05 was not a keeper for me. It sounds “okay”. Doesn’t compare to the original. The D-05 is basically a slightly more alive version of a VST. it is not something to compare, really. the monologue is a fine little synth with Aphex Twin sounds. The Bass Station 2 is so much more - and with Aphex Twin sounds. It's in another league. I own a monologue and won't sell it anytime soon. I am saving up for the Bass Station 2, I only had the chance to play with it for a few hours and I love it. The Monologue would probably not win a direct comparison, but it shines on it's own.

Woody, if you have contacts with Roland, please tell them about that weird encoders issue. It affects the entire AIRA series (including System-1 and System-8), Juno DS, your JD-08 Boutique, TRs and MCs. Leave them for a long time, and the knobs start jumping. You need to use all the sliders and give them a good run at least once a month, otherwise the nightmare starts.

    Hi Woody!
I was actually wondering about the synths and whether you’d have time to show them all on your channel. The Nord Electro 6D is a beauty, isn’t she!! Not much of a player myself but if one is to aspire to become a good player, then the Nord is ‘the instrument’!
Now that you have the Yamaha’s ear, there is one thing I would like to suggest to you and perhaps, you could talk to them about it. It’s a bit awkward but I have read the same comments from many people, across multiple forums, and it is about the Yamaha arrangers like the top PSR models - specifically, the top two models (SX900/700 and now the SX920/720) as well as the top-end models - the Genos 1 and 2.
The thing is this - these are touchscreen-driven instruments and each has at least one USB-to-device port. Why is it not possible to connect an external touchscreen? Before anyone passes any judgement, I assure you, this has nothing to do with commodity. No, this is much more important - it is about the folks who use these instruments daily and who are blind or visually impaired. Remember, ‘blind’ does not automatically mean ‘cannot see’. The legal definition allows for degrees of disability, it doesn’t deal with absolutes. In a nutshell, a person can be legally blind and still ‘see’, just not very well. In such a circumstance, a bigger touchscreen isn’t just helpful, it is essential! I think anyone would agree that a 24’’ touchscreen is incomparably easier to use than a 7’’ or 9’’ one. Now imagine that your ability to actually navigate the instrument depended on whether you can read the fonts on the 7’’ touchscreen. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
By the way, the MODX+ has this ability and there are videos of people on YT having done just that - connected a large-format touchscreen to the keyboard. Arranger is a one-man-band instrument so I really see no justification in it not being able to do the same.
One other thing is this - and I do apologise for this is turning into one long post - only the top PSR model and the Genos have the ability to even connect an external display, never mind a touchscreen. The SX700 (now the SX720) does not. Why? You see, if the ability to connect an external display is paramount for a person with a disability, that means that they have to spend an extra grand for the top model just for that feature.
Now, Yamaha is a corporation in the full meaning of the word. They have their own R&D teams consisting of hundreds of qualified engineers and doctors of sciences, in multiple fields. They have their own manufacturing plants across the globe and make everything from instruments to audiovisual products, from motorcycles to robots. It’s an extraordinary company! As such, I believe they WANT TO care. They just need to KNOW about it.
Like Stevie Wonder, one of the greatest musicians of our time, once said: ‘If an instrument isn’t good for a blind musician, then it isn’t good for any musician.’
There, I said it. I have written about this many times but there’s too much chatter on forums for anything meaningful to come to light. I’ve always considered you a man of integrity and I certainly wouldn’t be writing this if I didn’t really think that.
Once again, Woody, I apologise for the long post but this had to be said.
    All the best, as always,
    Tunka

Hi Woody, yes please try out the Montage M6, -please, please please! There are sooo many montage demo videos out there, but the all just focuses on the piano and the acoustic sounds, and a lot of boring show-off playing, but they in general doesn't focus on showing the capabilities of the thousands of multi-instrument performances with multiple arpeggio/riffs,patterns playable in parallel. I would really like to see a proper demonstation of it's many multi sound/arpeggiated performances. It theory the Montage should be able to work as an arranger keyboard just like the PA5x that you have demonstrated so brilliantly. So it could be really interesting to see how it would perform as an arranger "keyboard", but with the advantage of being a real synthesizer on top of it. Also it has this plugin E.S.P, but thare are not many proper demonstrations of how to use it with a DAW such as for example Cubase. Best regards Thomas Heder, Aalborg, Denmark

Thanks for a really interesting vid.
I’ve seen many a TH-cam vid with performers playing multiple keyboard set-ups in the home studio and some on stage. Have always wondered what it would be like connecting up instruments via midi, for example how well does a Yamaha Synth communicate with a Korg or Roland Synth, etc? Do same-brand-to-same-brand midi instruments actually work easy-peasy, or are there hurdles, and how easy is it to connect decades old midi instruments to new modern midi instruments? Also, which is your favorite music decade please?😊

Hey Woody, when you get the Juno-D, it'd be cool to get your perspective on the polyphony, and if you run into any issues with voice stealing.
I was considering a Fantom-0 for a while there before the Juno-D was released but it seems to have issues with the ZenCore engine eating up the voice count very quickly. Ended up grabbing one of their MV-1s for cheap (which I think has the same issues but is more self-contained and easier to move on if I don't like it as I can just use it with my existing main MIDI controller).
Also, love the amount of times you discover surprise synths in your storage room!

I don't have funds to get a Kontrol, and I have so few options on used ones, a Nektar Impact GX61 or an old era E-MU XBoard 61. If I had the cash, there's an original DX7 on sale too...or shoot for the stars and get a Motif XF? Go somewhere in between with an M1? Or get as close to new and get a MODX...all on sale at the local FB marketplace.
Now, about reviewing gear...unless you did already, how about an old school Motif (atleast a decade ago by now, 23 years for the original!) or one of their MX keyboard/controller thingys that claim Motif sounds? I'm curious about how good the keys are on your MIDI keyboard and how it stacks up with the cheaper options, not everyone has the space, or the funds to get a full blown synth but does have a PC, free stuff gets you pretty far nowadays!

I understand the Korg Pa5x was just a loan from Korg or have you sold it?
I agree with your statement it's not always a good thing to own a lot of gear because at the end of the day you never use some of them and during this time they see their price decreasing so the more you wait to sell them the more money you are loosing. And also yes some gear like a Akai MPC needs a big effort to master the workflow and during this time you don't make any music. Today I have only one big synth (a Montage M6) and the Roland MC 707 and that's it, I have sold all the rest to concentrate only on what I really use everyday. and also it's save some space at home and some dust between the cables

Cumbersome.) Clearly both were not to stay, although I prefer a pedal for loping. Unexperienced and new to this I found it complex (MIDI etc.). Ableton offers some options to loop handsfree, though. Coincidently I'm considering buying a hardware looper. I got Ableton with my audio interface, realized I could record myself multitracking, but once in Ableton partly drifted away from the guitar. Was fond a Moog sounds anyway 😉

Hey Woody! It would be great if you could do a video or two about the Roland GO:KEYS. It was your heads-up on this that made me want one. I was going to get the 3 until I saw another video saying the 5 had a built-in vocal harmoniser. As a singer, that appealed to me, and saves on adding a £200-£500 harmonising pedal. I got the 5 but I've not really seen any good videos about combining it with singing. Would you be willing to dust off the vocal chords for the benefit of your TH-cam audience? Please, please, please! 😁

I know you review the Yamaha CK 88, but I would like you to review the Yamaha CK 61. They have different keys. It would be interesting to see if the synth-action keys of the 61 would make a difference.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

The CK61 that I tried right after they came out, I didn't like the keys. I think it must've been slightly defective, because the ones I've tried since have been great for synth action keys. I have a CK88. I like those keys for an easy to carry digital piano (I had the same keys in the P115 before) except that, in the CK88, they sound physically very clunky in that cabinet... clunkier than the P115, and clunkier even than the MODX8. I might open mine up and try to dampen the internals, if possible. I like the way the CK88 keys play, though. I prefer the slightly lighter playing Nord Stage 4-88 keys, that I just tried, but the price of that...

I have both the ck88 and the ck61 that I use when performing. When it’s me and one other performer I generally use the ck88. In a larger group I use the ck61. Love being able set them up exactly the same for quick familiar changes. They are not the best of anything but they are great reliable all-around instrument. Battery power is nice. Also nice to have the option of the smaller lighter ck61 when hauling gear upstairs or into tight spaces. I’m fine with the difference in the keybeds. Ive played so many instruments for so long I can adjust quickly to anything.
