  • Daytona USA 2001 (デイトナUSA2001) is a Dreamcast remake of Daytona USA, developed jointly by Amusement Vision and Genki. The game features updated versions of tracks found in the arcade original and Circuit Edition, along with three brand new courses.
    Daytona '01 usually gets dumped on for having poor controls when using a gamepad. And it's a claim that's certainly not without merit. While the US version of the game does add an option to adjust sensitivity, this isn't a proper solution. The real problem lies with the analog stick's dead zone -- it's massive. Fortunately, if you play the game on an emulator, you can use a program called XInput Plus to address the issue. Just tweak "linearity" to around +0.25, and that should help to nullify the dead zone.

      The Holy Meme King - LOL, I just posted this on a video of a Saturn version of Daytona. A big group of us always went to Dave & Busters in Solihull, UK on an afternoon for the cocktail happy hour. We were all under 21, which was an issue as D & B was one of the only places in UK which had higher age of entry - usually 18 in UK. The place was HUGE. Huge pool hall, casino, the old VR gaming cubicles & the rows of Sega rally & Daytona. That "Daaaytoooonaaaa" call was a trademark sound of any trip to Dave & Busters or decent arcade in the 90s. Kids now will never get the thrill of seeing the latest coin op arrive at their local arcade, cinema or bowling alley.
      Ah, the memories!

    This remake is cool, and the graphics seriously look really superior for the Sega Dreamcast as they even fit modern gaming quite well. If I ever get a Sega Dreamcast at some point in the future, I'll have to play this version of this game. Great job on this video!

      It's the rock solid framerate and also being released in December 2000, they were probably using an updated development kit. Too bad Sega pulled the plug just a couple months after. Would've been really cool to see more graphical updates on first party games.

    • @SaturnMemories
      @SaturnMemories  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Eh, I'd prefer more. The tracks that were included from Circuit Edition are very well designed -- especially Desert City. The ones unique to this game are a bit underbaked. If Genki had just added one or two more challenging turns to Rin Rin Rink and Mermaid Lake, they'd be awesome. And looking beyond Daytona 2001, the tracks in Daytona 2 are fantastic. I'd love to see all of the aforementioned recreated in a hypothetical new Daytona game.

    • @ericolson2286
      @ericolson2286 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      First off, great driving skills! You’ve got all of the turns down pat!
      I’ve read that Circuit Pixie, Mermaid Lake and Rin Rin Rink were more designed for online competition (and to appeal to a wide variety of skill levels). I was never a fan of them myself.
      I have the Daytona arcade download for the Xbox 360, and still have my Dreamcast with Daytona. To me it’s best of all worlds: the 360 version for an enhanced but still pure arcade experience, and the DC version for all of the extra content.
      To this day I still miss the extra cars from the Saturn version. They really gave that iteration a lot of replay value.

    • @SaturnMemories
      @SaturnMemories  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ericolson2286There are elements to the latter two that I do like -- especially that first turn in Rin Rin Rink in which the optimal way to take it is to go into a drift as soon as you crest the hill. If they had done a bit more to flesh 'em out, they'd be great track even for online. I think Daytona on 360/PS3 shows that more complicated track design doesn't necessarily hinder multiplayer.

    • @ericolson2286
      @ericolson2286 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I don’t hate those tracks, but it does feel they’re all missing something.
      The decision to remove the roller coaster from National Park Speedway was a very bad one. That track has almost no personality without it.

    • @SaturnMemories
      @SaturnMemories  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @LEX LUTHOR The game initially launched without an H-shifter. No nonsequential shifting means no gear drifting, which is completely unacceptable. And while they did eventually start producing the cabs with the correct stick, you can tell they never did any testing with the gear drifting mechanic because going 4-2-4 doesn't work half the time and the first and last big turns in the expert courses are nearly impossible to gear drift through.
      The cabs also launched with a massive dead zone in the wheel. This has been fixed somewhat, but there's still more dead zone there than I'd like.
      None of the music in the game is new. Most of it was repurposed from Circuit Edition and 2001. Even the Daytona International music is just a remix Mitsuyoshi produced like five or six years ago.
      Most of the new tracks are just mirror versions of the originals. They couldn't even be bothered design anything original.

The remixed tracks in this game while yes, not as good as the OG arcade tracks still hold value as really great VG tunes. I came back to this game recently through DC emulation and honestly this game is amazing. I do wish the control was a bit better. Before the long overdue 2011 re-release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, there was the Dreamcast remake Daytona USA 2001, which was co-developed by Amusement Vision (who also developed Super Monkey Ball and F-Zero AX/GX) and Genki (of the Shutokou Battle series fame, aka Tokyo Xtreme Racer / Tokyo Highway Challenge). It's worth noting that only the Western releases allowed players to adjust the analog sensitivity (there is NONE for the Japanese DC release), but it still doesn't change how it managed to have worse controls than even Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition. Then again, Genki's involvement was a dead giveaway. It's a shame since the DC version looks amazing with its high-res graphics, solid visuals and online play at the time.

    • @PhonkMachine220YT

    Dreamcast was a better machine than the Saturn. Not even like the Saturn Daytona was bad but the next generation machines gave the Saturn a quick burial. Daytona was one of Sega's best works as well. Rare masterpiece in my opinion. The Dreamcast was special even now, this is one.if the few titles that are killer on this machine maybe my favorite racing title.

      I feel like this version controlled too differently, it was more touchy. The Saturn version had the arcade on point, but i dont like how they rebuilt the game with a new engine on Dreamcast. they're different games to me, just depends on what game's handling you prefer

    The dreamcast was an amazing console, tell me again why Sega lost the console war?
    It had everything 4 its gen - powerful hardware, season arcade pedigree backing it & amazing games. It's a bloody shame Sega did a crap or job against the Sony hype machine & lost big time.
    Shame really as imo this version of daytona was better then the arcade & I used 2 smash this with my mates in the arcades. We used 2 play the co op verses arcade cabinets & l was really good at it.
    For me the dreamcast will always be segas best console ever & I know Sega still has fanboys like me that are still waiting 4 the rumoured return 4 Sega 2 return to the console market like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Sega are legends & just imagine if the really did release a super powerful home console to rival ps5 & series x, wouldn't that be something 2 rejoice!?
    Thanks 4 posting big like from me mate stay safe & Godbless! 😁🙏👊👍👊👍

      These graphics still hold up, even today in 2022. Clean and sharp and smooth. The graphics and games had nothing to do with them losing out, that's for sure. It was mostly bad management decisions, like not enough anti piracy, no DVD disk formats, etc, just to name a few.

    Honestly this version of Daytona is the definitive one. Forget the original on the Sega Saturn, or the championship edition, or the fan remakes on PC/Android/whatever, and I don't know if you can emulate the original arcade version but even if you can forget that one too; the control setup will be too finicky. Just play this one. It has better graphics, more tracks, more modes including time attack w ghost cars, mirrored tracks, etc., and analog controls/steering.

    • @SaturnMemories
      @SaturnMemories  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The definitive version of Daytona is on 360/PS3. This one could have been the best, but Genki botched the gamepad controls. Tweaking in the options menu won't fix it because it's a dead zone issue and there is no dead zone adjustment in any version of the game. You either need a Dreamcast wheel to play this well or play it in an emulator and tweak the dead zone either within the emulator settings or using third-party software.

    Some lovely driving on display. What controller/wheel are you using? I always found the DC controller difficult to play this game with (the overall sensitivity and the convex thumbstick). Yes, we got the port we all wanted just a decade later but (like Virtua Racing Deluxe on 32X vs PS2), this reimagined port is worth having and playing as it's still a beautiful game to behold. Though I still find it's a shame it wasn't Daytona USA 2 (a game we are still waiting for)
