    You are incredible.
    Thank you so much for helping all of us with e46’s.
    My is a 2000 e46, 328-M52tu engine.
    Thank you again for all you have done for me.
    You should be a BMW head Mgr. in any BMW Dealer.
    Thank you. Tonio.

      NOT all of us with e46's.
      this guide only applies to about 20% of E46's. dude doesnt know what he's talking about, there are over a dozen different engines in E46's, most of which have different o2 sensor setups.

    I have the M56 engine in my 2005 325i which required the Bosch Parts # 17175 and 17176 sensors. The replacement process will require the removal of the engine cover and air pump for best access. The cords go around the rear of the engine and up onto the top (under engine cover) where they connect. This is also a good time to inspect the stiff vacuum line running around the back of the engine, it shares the harnesses holding the O2 sensor wires in a couple of places. Mine was very brittle and broke during the sensor replacement. Hope this helps someone out there, I ordered the sensors in this video only to discover they were completely different when I attempted their install the first time.

    Both versions of the 0² socket are at Harbor Freight. I got the one he recommended against anyway and it worked fine on my E46 0² sensors using my 1/2” breaker. You have more than 30 days to return it at Harbor Freight even if it did fail

    Does it matter which way the plug goes in? Because the wires can be flipped upside down and still plug in.

    Just a heads up!
    Some of the comments are wrong on here as far as the sensors being the same part numbers. According to my research and I have an 325I M54 engine, the part numbers are DIFFERENT and are as follows:
    Bosch 17216 - bank 2 (4-6) Back
    Bosch 17215 - bank 1 (1-3) Front
    Or
    Bmw Part numbers:
    11787523435 - cylinders 4-6
    11787523434 - cylinders 1-3

    Hey there 50skid. Thank you for all your videos. I am a new owner of a e46 2001 300i. I knew absolutely nothing about BMW's until I found your videos. My question is this.... Do you have a video on replacing the after cat o2 sensors?? I couldn't find anything in your video library. If not do you think you will be making one? Thanks again for all the great info.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't have that one just yet. I usually don't make videos on replacing parts until I actually need to replace them, you know? And replacing those is a $100 thing. Every penny is currently being spent on accumulating parts and tools for my upcoming engine rebuild.

    • @Hammaneggs88
      @Hammaneggs88 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      50sKid Hey there. Thanks for the reply. I totally understand where your coming from. I know those darn things aren't cheap unless you go with the cheap China knock offs. I guess I was more interested in the locations of them and how difficult it would be to DIY it. I just bought my car about a month ago and am learning a lot from you. I've pretty much watched every video you've done. You do a great job and I thank you for all your knowledge your sharing with all of us. Please keep it up!! 😊😊😊

  • @forrestcook
    @forrestcook 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    seems like a pretty straightforward DIY, I've been watching a LOT of your videos... best e46 series I've found. Bank 1 Sensor 1 is probably the first one you changed here, right? Mine is throwing a code, I think it's time to replace.
    Can you reference how to test an O2 sensor? I have a multimeter and a desire to learn, I'm just not having a ton of luck finding an answer.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What code are you getting? You CAN test to see if an O2 sensor is functioning by unplugging it (it's okay to run the car when it's unplugged) and connecting the leads from a multimeter (set to DC voltage mode in the 2 volt range) to the black and white wires (the grey wires are for the heater). If the sensor is working, you should see the voltage switching between ~0.1 volts and ~0.9 volts. However, this isn't the best, most definitive test for whether an O2 sensor is working, because if you have an exhaust leak or a vacuum leak somewhere before the sensor that is letting oxygen into the system, that will skew the results.

    • @forrestcook
      @forrestcook 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +50sKid sorry for the delay, had to wait for the codes to come back since I cleared them. I currently have p0130 (o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1), p0134 (no activity at o2 sensor circuit bank 1 sensor 1) and p1421(secondary air?)
      I plan on going through your vacuum line video but I'm a weekend warrior learning slowly amidst my two young kids and full time job... I've got a lot of work ahead of me, I'm sure.

    Really enjoy your videos! Here’s a question for anyone including 50’s kid. I just replaced pre car sensors on my 02 325i but I’m getting the same codes P349,1351 and 1353 in cylinders 4,5,6 and misfire symptoms. I’m thinking it might be the oxygen sensor wire harness. BMW is telling me they don’t sell the wire harness and I’d have to buy new harness connectors (ends only) and make a new harness myself buy buying same gauge wire. Anyone have any experience with replacing the oxygen sensor wire harness?

      You have a wiring problem to the O2 sensor. Not the two grey wires, it'll be the white or black wire (I forget which one is the ground in this case). Anyway, check the entire wiring harness to find the break in the wire and repair it.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't find a broken wire then the sensor is bad internally.

    I originally had a 492 code. I ended up replacing dried up lines on the air relay switch behind the manifold under the cabinet filter assembly. One hose wasn't even on and the other was cracked . After doing this and clearing the codes I drove my 2002 bmw 325i wagon about 25 miles and the check engine light came on again. However, the code is now 0430 low threshold bank 2. Any idea what might have cause this. I thought maybe as I looked at your video and seeing the sensors where in the same location as the secondary intake valve line the might be a connection

    Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew what the part number is or what you call the wire you plug the o2 sensor into. It's the wires between the o2 sensor and the harness.

    Hey thank you for the great information. I've seen a few other videos on doing this job and you're the first one that told us to put the anti seize on the threads. Good to know. But I'm wondering if there's a trick or some way to get the other end of them off. I see that there are some little tabs on the plastic connectors but i don't really see any special way of undoing them. I see in other vids that they seem to just pull them apart. Is that it? Just grip and pull as hard as needed to get them off? (Holding them in the right place of course). I don't want to break them or rip out something while doing it. Thanks again.

    • @AlejandroGomez-qv5qn
      @AlejandroGomez-qv5qn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      acxel rose yes and no. The issue stopped after I unplugged the oxygen sensors from wire harness and cleaned connectors. I think I was either getting same codes because of a bad connection or codes hadn’t cleared yet. Either way codes and misfires are all gone

      Plug in your 2 upstream ones you don't need your downstream ones, I have headers as well, you need the upstream to adjust AF ratio

    I drive a 2002 530i. I had P0491 (Secondary Air Injection
    System Insufficient Flow Bank 1). I replaced Air Valve but could not get SAS
    monitor to set. Next I replaced Bank 1 Pre Cat O2 sensor, P0491 code gone and
    SAS monitor set at FIRST cold start up(after idle 2.5 minutes), BUT I got P2096
    (Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank 1) (but at least all monitors
    would set after running 1 drive cycle). Unfortunately I left the wire that
    plugged into the sensor laying on the manifold and the wires melted I got P0172 and
    P0132) after repairing, these codes are gone, but I STILL have P2096 and no
    monitors will set! So I'm back to trying to get SA monitor to set!!!!!!!!! Could
    I be getting too much air now that the valve is opening and letting air
    thru? SES is preventing me from passing Georgia emissions :(

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      P2096 is POST cat bank 1 o2. On these cars the post cat o2 sensors also take part in determining fuel trims. In this case the sensor is reporting that things are too lean on that bank too often. You need a scan tool with liva data to be able to diagnose this for sure. It could be a lazy o2 sensor that is reading lean when it shouldn't be or it could be a failed catalytic converter not doing its job and reading somewhat constant rich.

    • @1lottiedottie
      @1lottiedottie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Odd that you mention the Post O2 sensor because at the start of my issues I got a P0141 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 2. I replaced that O2 sensor. P0141 was gone but then I got P0491 which I explained in previous post.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aha, okay, my guess is you didn't tighten the O2 sensor enough and now a little air is leaking in (had this happen before with this code). Check that out.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The P0491 is completely separate and has nothing to do with this

    • @1lottiedottie
      @1lottiedottie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was able to tighten the O2 sensor almost a quarter turn BUT now I have P0155 O2 Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1)?????? as well as P2096. :( HO2s Monitor did set but none of the others. I will try and get someone to run scan on the sensors hopefully this week.
