@@coolhandluke1503 Preventing someone from getting imprisoned for breaking a law while exposing crimes and people who committed those crimes walk free, is definitely the point. Courts are supposed to administer justice, not punishment. Not to mention the affront to justice and human rights that is imprisonment, let alone life imprisonment.
Making the public aware of injustice is useless if the public is apathetic, ignorant, manipulated, fearful, and have disempowered themselves while empowering people and institutions that should not have it, or have misused it.

Its good to have freedom, but how about an Australia that abandons no one? Believing for corruption free. So trust at this time, remember acceptance is key. The judge hasn't given ruling yet. We are trained to go to jail, if we have to in exposing what needs to be exposed, it takes courage. It also takes time. See it, like a beautiful rose that unfolds, or a sunrise and sunset that has its time. We also learn and live as this all unfolds and processes and experience this life. When election time comes, its time to then ask the uncomfortable questions, and have those discussions that need to be had. Because that is the time, we are heard. Got you.❤

That's being a bit naive and something you may regret later by dismissing a possible great experience and career opportunities based on the behaviour of few bad apples. My memories of the comradery, the life time mates, the adventures of travel, of buzzing around in helicopters, helping Australians during natural disasters, evacuating citizens from overseas, medivacs, being responsible for very expensive equipment and people, i wouldn't replace them for anything. Do I agree with Australia being involved in Afghanistan and Iraq, nope. Are our politicians usaully self serving incompetent tossers, you betcha. Do I support what the SASR guys did, nope, but it is made very clear the ramifications of blabbing to the media can be costly to your own freedom.
If war broke out, you would most likely be conscripted anyway.

99% of commenters haven't read the evidence brief, or the court transcript. David is not a hero, but a narcissistic disgruntled employee who thought you knew better than everyone else despite the endless evidence otherwise. He was a drunk who was addicted to dexies when he offended. For those of you who continue to think otherwise, read teh court transcript. He was actually COMPLAINING about the investigation of soldiers who had killed civilians, and as the court transcript shows "Further, the articles published by ["The Afghan Files"] were the exact opposite of what Mr McBride had intended when making the disclosures. ...". McBride is a disgrace

You said “I may have broken the law, but I did not break my oath to the Australian people." You knew you would go to prison, but you did it anyway. Such a sustained selfless act of insane bravery to challenge our country to live up to the values we wrote on paper, to refuse to let our good soldiers be thrown into a meatgrinder by the bad ones covering up their sadism.

Crown prosecutor Patricia McDonald says your stand of courage "reflects an element of arrogance..." she says you thought you "knew more than others..." that this massive sacrifice was just for some "personal vindication." No. I don't see arrogance, you didn't have some superior moral radar to others, you were just the one with the strength to act on it. A man who could not walk away. A hero. A patriot. A triumph.
