Placing a large dark coloured towel or tablecloth I find helps the quail feel secure from any potential predators overhead.

Glad I found this video, have tons of wire dog crates as I never get rid of them and had pups of many sizes any my WR cage hasn't shipped yet and the chick's are almost ready to leave the brooder. This will be perfect for them till that WR cage arrives.

I bought rabbit cages for my quail and they are 20 inches tall which is fine. They don’t jump and they love the space. I placed the cages on lifetime plastic tables. Works perfectly. Spent a lot less money.

Thank you for this! I have been trying to find a solution for my baby quail while they are in a brooder, this would be perfect for the first few weeks !

Love the video! I also imagine you could just cut some old cardboard to size and it would do the same job as the terrrace board!

We have found they work so well for deep bedding and the smell is not bad either if you keep them dry. Good luck!

I am keeping some quail indoors as pets, rather than for food, and started out with a big dog cage, but felt it wasn't nearly enough space for them. I ended up buying a big cat cage, two actually since they come in panels you snap together with connectors, which is a lot more expensive, but I ended up with a space 6' long x 3' deep by 6' tall, and they are so happy with so much space.
One of the most important reasons for such a big space was because I noticed there was some bullying going on in the small cage (one hen in particular was getting after the rooster, and sometimes a second hen would join in), but with the big cage, with more room to stake out territory and more decorations to separate and serve as hiding places, there hasn't really been any more bullying. Indeed, the quail actually all get along very nicely now that they aren't forced into being too close for comfort. Even the females that were doing the bullying, after a couple of weeks, now when the rooster comes over to them, they will stop and squat down and wait, ready to accept him should he be interested. A complete reversal of the social situation among the quail when given an abundance of room!
I put down two heavy duty sheets of tarpaulin underneath to protect the flooring, and a deep layer of woodchips. Although I have a bowl full of sand which they kick so much sand out of that they are now getting a nice deep layer of sand underneath the woodchips...
It is a more expensive arrangement to be sure, and takes up a lot more space, but seeing them being so happy is worth it :) Even the extra height, they do sometimes fly a little bit (mostly more of a hop to get up on top of one of the straw huts, but sometimes they fly the length of the cage just because they can), and once I startled a hen to where she got at least a good 4 feet up into the air, so all that height is proving a good call.
It is fun watching them, and observing how they each have their own unique little personality. That personality may have difficulty expressing itself fully if kept in close quarters, but with enough space, it will emerge and make your little quaily friends all the more enjoyable to have around. I actually noticed the same thing with betta fish - keep them in a tiny bowl and they seem pretty inert and uninteresting, but give them a big tank and they will express a noticeable personality - every betta fish will have a very different in personality if you give them the chance. Same seems to be happening for the quail as well. I love it so much!

I recycled my cage like you did and it is very hospitable for my quails.

That's great to hear! Recycling materials can not only save you money but also benefit the environment. And it's wonderful that your quails have a comfortable home. Keep up the good work!

I already have a dog crate... but I have had a cat jump up and startle my button quail which caused them to jump straight up and hit their noggins on the wire of their hardware cloth brooder (which we ended up having to stop using to prevent ay further scalping). Would the coturnix quail scalp themselves too?

Thought of adding a 2nd level to my cage. But ended up retrofitting the old greenhouse to an aviary.

I'm allergic to the pine, so that bedding style could never work for me. Though! I have used bunny hutches/bird cages and dog cages as ICU set ups for single or a couple Quail. Thank you for sharing your tips.

Why not look into hemp? I use hemp in deep litter method for my hens, low dust, odor free, super absorbent and much softer on those feet. Should be some online and maybe local retail sources. Ck Carolina Coops on YT for more on hemp and deep litter method.

There's also shredded paper that expands, and has no chemicals or anything in it.

I’m considering using a dog crate we already have for future Jumbo Quail hens… it’s a 4x6’. Do you think I could comfortably keep 5 in there? I plan to keep them outdoors. Is there anything different you would suggest for outdoor keeping?

Rural King had their dog crates at half price, so we got 2 small and 2 of their largest. Best decision ever. Way better than the quail cages when using the deep litter method.
