Sierra Walker died because she was a unvaccinated baby, Sierra was too young to get the shot. her mother panicked and buried her daughter with her doll. this was the most tragic episode i have ever seen
Yes and she was around a little boy that was old enough to be vaccinated but his mother was a selfish anti-vaxxer and as a result her little boy had the measles and passed it to Sierra.
Ruth clearly wanted her husband to end Monica's life to avenge their granddaughter's death. Yet Ralph had other ideas, especially when his "beloved wife" had belittled him for trying to be the voice of reason after the trial's conclusion. In his mind, he must've thought... 'Why should I set Monica free from the pain she has brought upon my family? Sierra's blood is on her hands, yes. Though I'm not giving Ruth what she wants. I'll add myself to the bill, to make sure Monica will never forget what she did.' ...Thus for Ralph it was the best way to not only punish Monica for her role in Sierra's death, but also to get out from under the thumb of his pugnaciously arrogant wife in my opinion. Given how Ruth harbours such an unbridled sense of self entitlement, I don't blame him at all for doing what he did in the end. Even Ashlee's actions and behaviour serve as further justification in my eyes. For one thing, Ralph could never be the "man" that both his wife and daughter had expected him to be. And of course, he missed being with his granddaughter, the one person who had become the only light in his life until her untimely passing. There was nothing and no one left to keep him in this world, and he wanted Monica to remember that. Yet Ruth and Ashlee would've most likely just scoffed at him for taking his own life, saying that he always was a disappointment to them.
I hate and love how New York toy shops make their dolls look so realistic. This isn't the first episode or season Law and Order:SVU has pulled that stunt with us. Take a look at the episode of a woman faking having Multi Personality Disorder in the events of a missing baby
I don't know about the USA (or when this episode originally aired) but in Canada, there have been several cases (and convictions) of parents being charged with neglegent manslaughter and "failure to provide the necessities of life", for not providing medical aid when their child(ren) were obviously sick.
that happens here in the US too, a mother and grandmother were charged a few years back when this little girl died of untreated lice and medical neglect
"It was only a matter of time." Of everything bothersome in this clip, this is one that really bothered me. Was that mother saying it was okay/not a big deal for the little girl to die because the baby's mother was so bad it was only a matter of time before the baby died? Seriously? This was a baby whose death was brought on by your poor decision making and your response is, "what does it matter? It was only a matter of time?" Maybe she didn't mean it that way, but the way she said it was very unsettling
See, that sentence sat wrong with me too. She wanted to keep the blame far away from herself, and in doing so she very openly showed her thoughts on the outcome of that poor child's upbringing. The mother who refused to vaccinate her kid seriously got off WAY too leniently in my opinion. Had the victim been a baby from a caring/loving healthy home it would have been a different tune. However, because the baby was unfortunately born to the wrong parent (she wasn't a good mom, so I'm not calling her a 'mom') she shouldn't be held accountable for her part in the negligence? Like say, healthy family or not, Hospital care or not, the baby dies anyway. Should the anti Vax mom not be held accountable in some way for her part in endangering another parents child? Especially with how blatantly she didn't care for the safety of others? Idk, this episode for me was just rough.
Even though that woman got away with reckless endangerment, she'll forever live with the fact that a family was reduced to ruin because of her selfish ignorance.
The awful thing is that she difnt seem to care. Your child gets sick and doesnt get better in a day? Or gets worse in less than that? You go straight to the hospital or a popular clinic. You get help.
@ramazriel I don’t like it necessarily, but no one can force others to take vaccinations. There is merit to being uncomfortable with the risks, as with a lot of modern medicine, the majority of the populace won’t see any problems, but what if you’re in the percent that does? I’m not advocating it, I’m just saying there is merit to her concerns.
The prosecutor admitting withholding exonerating evidence from the defense is a guaranteed winning appeal and probably a very successful lawsuit for wrongful imprisonment
Even if it wasn't her fault. She left her child buried in the cold ground alone to avoid consequences. If she ever wants to try being a mom again I suggest she grow up first!
@@CreatorofdathingsShe was found not guilty. I lived in FL at the time of the trial, a lot of people were saying she deserved jail time and the others were happy for her
No no, she took the job after her last one was shut down, she was like a receptionist for some Phantom Wrangler business. I think she worked out of an old fire station with these four guys, three of which were scientists. I think she went back to that job recently in fact, something about a Frozen Empire.
They are both unfit parents. Ashly for never getting help fur her substance abuse and not taking her sick daughter to the hospital. Monica for not properly carrying for her child’s health by vaccinating him and as a result endangering other children.
The Walkers were definitely far from perfect. I don’t justify their actions or decisions, but Monica was the one who set all of this in motion when she took her son to that park. We live in a time where diseases like measles are preventable. She chose to ignore it all in favor of her holier-than-thou, down w/ big pharma beliefs. She didn’t care if others got hurt, & that led to Sierra’s death. The only sort of twisted consolation to come from this is she will now have to live w/ the trauma of causing this family’s total destruction.

I’ve had this discussion about vaxxing with one of my friends and she would never vaccinate her kids and i said “that’s your right as a parent. However, if you see your kids playing with other kids and know your child is sick, keep them away from me or any other small children”

@@GhostKyngThe point is you can't see bacteria or viruses. A kid can be infected with something and be completely asymptomatic. It doesn't matter how closely the parent is monitoring, they're not going to see anything. And yet they can still transmit it to another child or baby.
@spacepope87 1) Vaccines are not a magic bullet. They do, however, greatly decrease your chances of contracting the illness you're vaccinated against while greatly increasing your chances of survival and ability to recover. 2) Not every child can get vaccinated. Some are too young as in the case of this episode, some have autoimmune conditions, and some may not be children such as the elderly who are more vulnerable to illnesses vaccines help protect against. Oh, and there are other children whose parents don't vaccinate their kids, leaving them vulnerable. The "it's fine because everyone else is vaccinated so why should I bother?" is tired and hollow at this point because it's simply not true.
Under the EMTALA law, as long as you go to a hospital with an ER, and you are having a medical emergency or are in labor, you cannot be turned away due to inability to pay.
If you couldn't afford care but took a child with measles (or another potentially serious infectious disease) to a doctor, I tend to think that the medical staff would help you as best they could. If your child needed to be hospitalized, they would have you go to a hospital with an emergency room. If your child didn't need to be admitted to the hospital, you would probably get referred to a free or low-cost clinic, and told to apply for Medicaid or other government-provided insurance. Certain diseases need to be reported to the public health department. If the parents told the health department that they couldn't afford treatment, they would most definitely be advised to apply for Medicaid or other government-provided insurance. Some doctors will take uninsured patients and arrange for a payment plan, reduce their fees, or provide pro-bono care and/or medication. At any rate, I just can't see a doctor or clinic absolutely refusing to treat a very sick patient, especially if they have a contagious infectious disease and/or are in danger of developing serious complications.
I am going into detail here in case anyone who is sick or has a sick child and no insurance reads this. Please don't be afraid to go to a doctor or emergency room or urgent care. Someone, somewhere will help you, especially if it's a life-threatening emergency. Even if it isn't, you need and deserve care. I've had times when I didn't have health insurance and my doctor worked with me. Tell them. They've heard it before and will likely be willing to help you. If not, find someone else who is.
I also have kids of my own. Their pediatrician is wonderful and I know that they would work with me if I couldn't afford my kids' healthcare. I would like to think that all good pediatricians would do the same.
Hard questions as you can't force mandating vaccinations and the only places that require kids to have proof of vaccinations are daycares and schools. Public places are where any kid can technically play with a kid whose parent who has any belief system on the planet. However if my baby was crying to the point I couldn't sleep/was inconsolable and had a fever w/ a rash and tylenol did nothing. . . . .ER trip!!!!
the fact that you say "you can't force mandating vaccines" and then list the two most prominent places kids spend time that both mandate vaccines, it's called PUBLIC HEALTH & SAFETY for a reason. you don't have the right to show up in public and put someone else's life at risk with a gun or a vial of ricin or a rabid animal, you don't get to do it with a virus either. there is no good reason for having let ignorant and dangerous anti-vax sentiments proliferate like they have. also if this girl didn't know what measles was, i am pretty sure she didn't have the means to take her kid to the ER.
I did know that, and I've seen her in other TV movies, too. Fun fact: Gail O'Grady and Mariska Hargitay share the same birthday, only a year apart. Both were born on January 23, Gail in 1963, Mariska in 1964.
It's insanity. This could have killed way more children, but these parents are too self-righteous. Ultimately, their beliefs can become weaponized, and this case, deadly. I'll never understand.
And it's become politicized, in a way it wasn't when this episode aired. It used to be that most anti-vax sentiment was on the hippie-dippie liberal side of the spectrum [note mom's comment in the episode about 'Big Pharma'], and maybe a few conspiracy theorists. But during COVID, it suddenly became a huge issue for right-wing supporters of Trump, because of their need to deny ANY form of medical science about infectious diseases. And for many of the True Faithful, not vaxxing your kids became a way of showing allegiance to the Tribe.
Ashley Walker and Monica Stewart WERE BOTH IGNORANT and made horrible decisions as mother's. The difference is Monica's decision against immunizing her son and to bring him to the park directly contributed to Sierra Walkers death. And let's keep in mind that for her par Ashley did not get off scott free. Regardless of which side of argument we fall on, i think all us can agree they did a great job making this episode.
8:39 And Alex was completely right because Livs stance/defense of the Mom in this episode really came to bite her in the butt all those years later when Noah got infected by that Mom and her kid in "Granting Immunity".
4:09 The further demonization of lawyers in the show. Why in these cop shows that even mentioning a lawyer, you looked upon as guilty or evil? Lawyering up is an inherent right of all American citizens but it's shows like these that permeate the horrific lie of "if you're not guilty then why do you need a lawyer?"
i mean its glamourizing police, its still TV so take it with a grain of salt. at least people with intelligence do so good on you tha you know your rights. unfortunately not many do so the most we can do is pass that knowledge along. (theyre still allowed to make these scripts bc its their rights so might as well enjoy it but be smart enough to decern fact from fiction)
Considering that on a number of times on L&O and it's spinoffs, the demonization of lawyering up and lawyers in general is common and applauded and suspects who guilty or not still have rights are violated. That isn't a good image to show to the public. @@yucol5661
Funny how she isn't suing the anti-vaxx mother for letting old-enough-to-get-vaccinated son walk around with measles while not being vaccinated himself, but suing the city for not going full-on tyrannic on anti-vaxx parents.
I know this is fiction. But that’s how liability works. The irresponsible anti-vax mother isn’t on the hook if she does something deadly but legal. But the city IS cause it’s their job to enforce such public health things.
The city is a bigger, much juicier target for a lawsuit. Plus, other anti-vaxxers may be on the side of the mother if a lawsuit against them occurs, but not against the city. Or, so I think...
I will never understand this system. In my country Brasil we vaccinate the baby as soon as she/he is born. Up till the age of four the child gets like 20 doses of vaccine for different diseases. It's all free and I'm still mad at the ones who arent.
There's nothing wrong with not vaccinating your child. It doesn't make you irresponsible to choose not to do that to your child. I think it's very fair for a parent to question the suggested vaccine schedule for children and choose to do further research on the matter when it comes to your brand new baby. It's logical to question the companies that promote and profit billions off of the vaccines, especially when they can't legally be held liable for any harm done to a child. Not all vaccines are created equal.
She’s not so much a horrible mother as she is a horrible person. She’s willing to risk the lives and health of other children for her son and her pathetic beliefs. That is just plain disregard for human life.

I remember seeing this one for the first time at the emergency room late at night. Later that night, two gunshot victims were brought in and two factions almost had it out in the parking lot while a mother screamed about her baby being dead (one of the men who was shot didn't make it). Once I got out, my Dad told me "I've already sent your mother home; let's get out of here before a gunfight breaks out." Cops were streaming in, about four squad cars, as we departed. Back to the episode; it's a heartbreaker for sure. The ending always stuck out as particularly dark.

Interesting how Olivia is defending the Anti-Vax mother when later on her own son would almost suffer the same fate of little Sierra and she insisted on the anti-vax mother of that episode be stopped and punished.
Isn't that how it often happens? Look at how Elliot was angry about it due to his own kids. It's one thing when, for you, it is just theoretical (Olivia in earlier episode) compared to when you have your own kid(s) on the line (Olivia in later episode).
NGL it kinda annoyed me how sympathetic Oliva was towards the anti vaxer, i mean I know what she did wasn't illegal but just because something isn't illegal doesn't mean its a good idea.
That's messed up, spanking a tiny baby with a fever who's obviously sick?? She deserves a life sentence, her last moments was a mother who beat her for being sick and all she probably wanted was comfort. Makes me nauseous.
People who do not vaccinate their child infuriate me my mother did not vaccinate me and I was unvaccinated until I was 16 she didn’t wanna vaccinate people because she was convinced that it was a toxin that was injured dead into people she’s one of those people who believes that vaccines are toxic because the school wouldn’t except that answer and she knew they wouldn’t that she lied and said that vaccines were against her religion because I went to a Catholic school they refused to suspend me because I wouldn’t take a vaccine because of my religion but yet I was still exposed to all of these things and it terrified me as soon as I was 16 I asked my dad to take me to get my vaccinations my dad took me because he understood that I wanted to be safe while he did explain to my mom. He was completely fine with her choosing not to get vaccinated. It wasn’t smart to not get the kids vaccinated. She should’ve gotten me and my brother vaccinated until we were at the age to decide if we wanted to continue with vaccinations or not. basically what I’m saying is vaccinate your children, because there is something called herd immunity. For example, Covid was extremely dangerous so much so that we had to lock ourselves into our homes until the vaccine became available. Herd immunity means once a certain amount of people get the vaccine and the disease won’t spread and that’s what happened with Covid even though some people still get Covid the symptoms are far less dangerous because of the vaccine sometimes now people can have Covid, but it seems only like a tiny cold. Basically what I’m saying is to keep your child safe vaccinate them, and to keep other children safe vaccinate your children because clearly. in this case, Sierra‘s parents were not in the wrong she just was not old enough to get the shot but if the other kid had gotten the vaccination, he wouldn’t have spread it to Sierra while I am not specifically blaming the child or the parent of the The kid I am saying that she really should’ve gotten vaccinated. It should be a choice whether you want to be vaccinated or not and when you’re too young to make that decision, you should have to be vaccinated regardless once you’re old enough, for example when I was 16 I was able to make it informed decision and decide that yes I did want vaccinations I could’ve just as easily decided to not get vaccinations, but I decided to get them all I’m saying, is vaccinate children until they’re old enough to make the decision and then, if they don’t wanna keep getting vaccinations, they don’t have to.
I don't justify Ashley's actions, but Sierra wasn't at the age to get vaccinated and if the mother knew her son was sick and carried measles, she shouldn't have let him go to the park where so many babies at Sierra's age hang out and could get infected. You don't want to vaccinate your children, that's fine until it hurts others.

what i dont get is why didn't the mom take her to the doctor?? like you have a infant who has a high fever and a "terrible rash" and they are crying like crazy? i would have taken the baby to the ER right away!
No matter how hard they try to skate around the elephant in the room by attacking that lady , the girl was a bad mother and it was only a matter of time for some tragic to happen to that baby . Your child had a fever and rash and your motherly instincts didn’t kick in to take it to the ER but instead you abused her to shut her up . Then the next morning your first response to seeing your child dead silent in the crib is to go buy a shovel and bury. Driving to the hardware store and not the hospital with your dead kid in the backseat is crazy.
Gail O'Grady is 61 years old now. Yikes!! She's gorgeous. She's been married and divorced 6 times. No kids. Last divorce was in 2008. So that means she's coming up on 16 years now and she still haven't gotten married again for the 7th time. What's wrong with her?

That's a typical example of brainwashing... Have you ever heard that vaccines don't prevent catching the disease in at least 50% of the cases?
That’s a weird take. If you wouldn’t do it in public, you shouldn’t do it in secret…. Creep
I'll raise my children as I see fit! It's not against the law to not vaccinate your child!
Sierra Walker died because she was a unvaccinated baby, Sierra was too young to get the shot. her mother panicked and buried her daughter with her doll. this was the most tragic episode i have ever seen
This episode is based on the Caylee Anthony case.
@@MarvelFan1995 okay, not understanding their crazy talk at all. 😭😭🤣😂😅😆
Yes it is
Yes and she was around a little boy that was old enough to be vaccinated but his mother was a selfish anti-vaxxer and as a result her little boy had the measles and passed it to Sierra.
@@MsLovestory01"a selfish anti-vaxxer"
No, not selfish. A DELUSIONAL anti-vaxxer. (Which is actually redundant.)
This is one of the most heart wrenching conclusions in SVU.
I'll add myself to the bill, to make sure Monica will never forget what she did.'
...Thus for Ralph it was the best way to not only punish Monica for her role in Sierra's death, but also to get out from under the thumb of his pugnaciously arrogant wife in my opinion.
Yet Ruth and Ashlee would've most likely just scoffed at him for taking his own life, saying that he always was a disappointment to them.
when he picked up the doll i fully thought it was a human
Fooled me, too.
I thought it was meant to be a dead baby. I was especially shocked when they took it into the interrogation room with her.
One hell of a dead baby doll look alike
I hate and love how New York toy shops make their dolls look so realistic. This isn't the first episode or season Law and Order:SVU has pulled that stunt with us. Take a look at the episode of a woman faking having Multi Personality Disorder in the events of a missing baby
It was a doll!?
It looked so lifelike.
Props to the prop department.

"It was only a matter of time."
Of everything bothersome in this clip, this is one that really bothered me. Was that mother saying it was okay/not a big deal for the little girl to die because the baby's mother was so bad it was only a matter of time before the baby died?
Seriously? This was a baby whose death was brought on by your poor decision making and your response is, "what does it matter? It was only a matter of time?"
Maybe she didn't mean it that way, but the way she said it was very unsettling
I was more disgusted with Monica more than any of the Walker family
@@K._THEARTIST Its not against the law to not vaccinate your kid

Even though that woman got away with reckless endangerment, she'll forever live with the fact that a family was reduced to ruin because of her selfish ignorance.
idk man that family seemed to be the worst anyway.
The awful thing is that she difnt seem to care.
Your child gets sick and doesnt get better in a day? Or gets worse in less than that? You go straight to the hospital or a popular clinic. You get help.
I don’t think she cares
@@residentfan1521 I don't know. When someone blows their brains out right in front of you, it's sure to affect you somewhat.

Sheldon's mee maw was an attorney. Who knew?
Must've had a side job besides the casino in the landermat
No no, she took the job after her last one was shut down, she was like a receptionist for some Phantom Wrangler business. I think she worked out of an old fire station with these four guys, three of which were scientists. I think she went back to that job recently in fact, something about a Frozen Empire.
Let's not forget she was in Ghostbusters
Also a Designing Woman, a Ghostbuster , etc.
And played on designing women. Very versatile, that meemaw lol😂
They are both unfit parents. Ashly for never getting help fur her substance abuse and not taking her sick daughter to the hospital. Monica for not properly carrying for her child’s health by vaccinating him and as a result endangering other children.
I had no idea that Hilary Duff was in a SVU episode!
Same here. This is news to me.
Me neither after we've seen her in Disney Channel's Lizzie McGuire.
it's easier to find someone that never was part in an L&O episode
The Walkers were definitely far from perfect. I don’t justify their actions or decisions, but Monica was the one who set all of this in motion when she took her son to that park. We live in a time where diseases like measles are preventable. She chose to ignore it all in favor of her holier-than-thou, down w/ big pharma beliefs. She didn’t care if others got hurt, & that led to Sierra’s death. The only sort of twisted consolation to come from this is she will now have to live w/ the trauma of causing this family’s total destruction.
She probably was stroking herself in the end thinking she was right.
I doubt she will. She'll probably gloat and say something uneducated like "vaccines gave that entire family brain damage".
Youre so fucking delusional lmao.
I love Hilary Duff plus Annie Potts from young Sheldon. I loved this whole entire episode. I watched it before it was sad. Yes, but I loved all of the guest stars on this episode. Plus this is not the only episode that has measles season 16 the same memo. I love Olivia Benson and how she handles everything in her power❤
Annie Potts was also Mary Jo on one of my mother's favorite shows, Designing Women, and adult Mary Elizabeth on Any Day Now. (Her childhood self was Olivia Hack, Cindy Brady from the movies.) Hilary Duff, of course, was Lorraine from Cheaper By The Dozen.
I’ve had this discussion about vaxxing with one of my friends and she would never vaccinate her kids and i said “that’s your right as a parent. However, if you see your kids playing with other kids and know your child is sick, keep them away from me or any other small children”
But that’s the problem. They don’t always know their child is sick.
@@alyssaheubel they need to especially if they’re making sure every small thing in their lives are in order to their liking. So they need to make sure from the morning they wake up til
They lay down that they’re ok.
@@GhostKyngThe point is you can't see bacteria or viruses. A kid can be infected with something and be completely asymptomatic. It doesn't matter how closely the parent is monitoring, they're not going to see anything. And yet they can still transmit it to another child or baby.
If the other kids are vaccinated then all is good. Why worry?
"Unless this is Pinocchio he's not waking up"😂

That selfish mom should not be allowed to have kids again

American medical care means you don't get it if you don't have the money.
Jesus that ending. That was over the top even for L&O lol
Gail O'Grady played Hillary's characters mom in this episode. Some of you may have remembered her from her run on NYPD Blue.
I remember her from American Dreams.
I did know that, and I've seen her in other TV movies, too.
Fun fact: Gail O'Grady and Mariska Hargitay share the same birthday, only a year apart. Both were born on January 23, Gail in 1963, Mariska in 1964.
Thank you. It was driving me nuts trying to remember whom she was. She played a great role.
Man I hated this episode cuz I just had my daughter I didn’t leave the house until she was a year old unless it was doctor appointment.
In 2024 America, many parents feel that they have the right to spread measles and other infections throughout their communities.
Sad, but true.
It's insanity. This could have killed way more children, but these parents are too self-righteous. Ultimately, their beliefs can become weaponized, and this case, deadly. I'll never understand.
Exactly. I didn't take my son to public parks until he was two. Better he get protected then deal with eejits.
Not to scapegoat, but most of that is from "migrant" children
The maker said the show is meant to help NYCPD’s public image
Considering that on a number of times on L&O and it's spinoffs, the demonization of lawyering up and lawyers in general is common and applauded and suspects who guilty or not still have rights are violated. That isn't a good image to show to the public. @@yucol5661
This isn't a cop show, it's Law & Order. It's literally also a lawyer show.

Man, this was peak SVU
Funny how she isn't suing the anti-vaxx mother for letting old-enough-to-get-vaccinated son walk around with measles while not being vaccinated himself, but suing the city for not going full-on tyrannic on anti-vaxx parents.
My thought exactly.

Hillary Duff's acting was good in this episode. Apart from seeing her as Lizzie Mcguire.
Are we supposed to believe at 4:26 that this doll is more real looking than the fake baby at the beginning ?
I don't justify Ashley's actions, but Sierra wasn't at the age to get vaccinated and if the mother knew her son was sick and carried measles, she shouldn't have let him go to the park where so many babies at Sierra's age hang out and could get infected. You don't want to vaccinate your children, that's fine until it hurts others.
