Thanks for this abbreviated history, Librarian!! Since we aren’t going to get it in the show!! (Grrrrr) This was more entertaining than the last episode of The Mayfair Witches! Just to add on… the man who read the Demonology to Suzanne was actually a Witch Hunter General. On a mission to hunt down witches. But instead, he creates one! Also, I think the lineage of incest is part of the curse of Lasher. His intent was to use selective breeding to create Rowan, the 13th Witch, which included inbreeding the strongest of the witches (or in Peyter’s case, a powerful psychic from the Talamasca. The Mayfairs and Lasher want to keep the bloodline “clean” like the Targaryens in Game of Thrones.
Lasher has been using selective breeding to make enough females who are genetically capable of mating with him. The Mayfair's being human interpret it as "keep power in the family." After reading book 2 I can safely say my theory about Lasher being a man in disguise is false. But it's still a good theory.
They might still add the background story, just not the way it's done in the book. It's hundreds of pages, you can't just show that in 1-2 episodes, at least not without making a complete mess of it that nobody can follow. I think they'll put bits of it in the episodes, like they've done so far but drag it out over multiple seasons, maybe even do a spin-off series if Mayfair Witches is successful enough.
Christopher Rice should have held out for a bigger company to sell his mothers work to. It would have made for a better show. I miss Aaron lightener and Michael curry and Mona and the diff between first street Metairie and bayou’s witches

After he fathered a baby, lasher told him his work was done and to keep lasher from killing him, he agrees to let lasher use his body. Lasher loved Julien's appearance and kept it even when he was outside of julien's body, so people started saying he could bilocate. When Lasher was in his body, though, he slept with anything with a pulse for the novelty of the experience. Julien's worst personal habit was wrath. He kept ledgers of all the people he cursed and otherwise killed.

Probably not even a real or actual cousin at all, just a fake cover story only invented just to explain away the presence of the pregnancy and the absence of a father and hide the fact that her own father most likely got her pregnant while they were out of the country together or whatever. (Unless I'm already forgetting what point in this family tree a "distant cousin" was or wasn't actually even mentioned at all. Which is always possible.😅🙃👀😆😆 Lol)
😂😂 My third time reading it I had to stop midway and try and draw out the family tree because it was so tangled. I did that about 15 years ago and it’s still folded and in the book for each time I re read
Thank you for doing the hard work for us. I'm sure the book was more detailed with grossness lol I read VC Andrews books in High School in late 1990's early 2000's so I am no stranger to gross stuff but in this case no thank you I had enough. Maybe Anne should have released the history in a prequel book instead the same book
Much less grossness except vampiric attacks than vc andrews. This was more like the pharaohs keeping bloodline pure and definitely less graphic than game of thrones. Egypt and got used it to keep blood pure where this was a Mayfair deal for one purpose only. If you get to the end you will find out Scottish fairy legends. That part a little Rosemary baby but rice is about sex the vc andrews was about love.
But it was really important for people reading the book to actually know the family history, from what I'm hearing? And if you release a prequel, you can't really guarantee that everyone will actually pick it up before picking up the next book. Prequels are typically supposed to be extra but not actually essential information, primarily for the biggest fans who just can't get enough of that fictional world or such.
Lasher killed Cortland, not Carlotta. The first reason was that although Cortland was a witch, he was never "the" witch and therefore was never able to command Lasher. Second was because Rowan was the 13th witch, he needed her to grow up strong and healthy away from Carlotta. Cortland was trying to keep Rowan in New Orleans, so Lasher killed him to allow Carlotta to send Rowan away. He knew he would be able to lure Rowan back to New Orleans when the time was right.
"They have a lot of psychics on the payroll." That's hilarious. As is your whole commentary. I still love this story because it's so well written, rich, and atmospheric. Just don't think too seriously about the icky bits. And I'm sure all these icky bits have to do with Lasher's influence who was most likely doing whatever he wanted with whomever he wanted within his abilities. Humans are sinful to begin with so with his influence and all the inbreeding, and his power increasing over the years, it's not surprising. I'm sure he wanted to retain his powers, but also experience the joys of the flesh and he couldn't do that unless he is fully human. Although I know he possessed many a human in his quest for his earthly desires. I couldn't get into reading Lasher or Taltos so I don't know if he was eventually destroyed in the end. By the end of The Witching Hour, I was truly horrified and disgusted. I had still held out some hope for some goodness and light. However,I didn't care at this point about ANY of the characters. Rowan became despicable and Michael - who could have been our archangel Michael- was a shell of his former self succumbing to his own sins. In effect, there was never a true adversary to Lasher. Not sure about Anne Rice's religious beliefs. This story exemplifies how far we can fall as humans. The sinner in me comprehends. The Christian in me is devastated.
I agree. The characters all seem to fall for the same flaws as if projecting a single personality defect. All of them have this unbeatable vice of sexual deviancy and acceptance/offense of r*pe. Even those outside of the family culture like Michael. It was promising but gross.
I just finished Taltos book #3 and I'm kind of underwhelmed with the ending. I do love how Anne Rice present their family history. I was kind of disappointed with how the show was done. They rushed through the family history and not sure how the other seasons will tie the book series together. Julien is not even shown and he so interesting plus the Ciprien and Rowan's coupling felt rushed to me. Hope they change the tone/pace in season 2.
@@TheNaughtyLibrarian Yeah, especially with only 8 eps, unfortunately. But I feel like (from what I've heard) the tv series is a lot less like it's just completely fabricated without anything ever actually even taken from the books at all than many book readers seem to give it credit for, too. Lol
27:36 - I would find it just as unsurprising at this rate if Stella was Julien's child and resembled Cortland because they were siblings. Considering Mary-Beth's husband was also involved with Julien too, I wouldn't feel confident guaranteeing her and Julien entirely stopped their relationship just because she married someone else, they may have simply just all three been involved together all at the same time. And if that wasn't the case, I'd bet that was only to dilute the genetics just enough to get right back to it again later with an actually mentally capable descendant.😅😅🙃👀
It goes back to the 1600s with Suzanne of the Maye Fair. Scottish Beltane celebration of rounding the May pole and then “other festivities” amongst the villagers where Suzanne became pregnant with Deborah.
Thanks for doing this. I read The Witching Hour a few decades ago and to this day it is still one of my favourite books. Ive read it several times. I must disagree that the intricacies in history of the characters of the family tree didn't work. I found it extremely interesting and pertinent to the overall story. To each their own.
@@TheNaughtyLibrarian I apologize if offended but I’ve read and reread these series a gagillion times. I got a new one every Christmas. I understand starting vampire in storyville. But to take Michael curry and Mona out of mix doesn’t work you can’t get full story. The church the little people. Anne Boleyn. The Blackwood farm series. Lestat and Rowan meet thru Aaron lightner without watching the manipulation of each generation by a taltos the whole series falls apart.
@@TheNaughtyLibrarian That's probably a very modern storytelling/writing versus more classic writing/storytelling conventions related stylistic choice/preference. Much like tastes in prose styles typically are, too.😊 (But, yeah, like the original commenter said-to each their own! 💖💖)
I can’t tell if you like the Vampire Chronicles or not. Your summary on Prince Lestat at first seemed like you didn’t but you’re really into it. I can’t tell.
Thanks for the history... I never got into the witch trilogy for that exact reason. My ADHD couldn't get past the genealogy (too much like the "begats" in Genesis! ❤ L♡VED the Vampire Chronicles, however!
@@suzannekosic4088 I believe they were referring affectionately to the creator of the video as "lovely", not necessarily calling the video itself a 'lovely video' per se.😅 🙂
it's Carlotta and not Carlatta, also there's a reason with the incest you never mention, and it's to create the strongest witch, which we're told is Mona, and the line breaks when Mona impregnated by Michael and she gives birth to a Taltos, Lasher's people and she runs away with him.
But doesn't Rowan also give birth to a Taltos after Lasher (in Rowan's first child's body) impregnates Rowan? 🤔🤔😅 Keeping track of what does or doesn't happen in these books is a wild ride from the outside!. This is why I'm prolly still just gonna read them myself anyhow. (To try and better sort out what actually happens from all these confuzzled secondhand recountings I've come across so far.) Lol
Thank you for this act of community service. 😂😂😂 I DNF this book. I couldn’t make it. Then I googled the rest of the series and was like 😬😬😬😬. I also only read the first 2 vampire chronicle books. Your reviews of that series brought me here, and I’ve been enjoying your discussions! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful week!
@@Juleru Then again.... what exactly caused them to DNF the book? Maybe there's just something about Anne Rice's writing style and/or the content in these stories that simply isn't for them or their tastes-that's always fine, too. Pretty much nothing can really be for literally everyone. 🙂
@@TheNaughtyLibrarian I haven't read the books yet, only seen the tv series so far, but I got sucked down the rabbit hole of book spoilers because of wanting to understand the differences from page to screen and try to figure out exactly what the book readers think is so unforgivably changed from the original source to the adaptation....and one thing I have consistently wondered since is how/why exactly the Mayfairs were able to start suddenly popping out Taltos babies??😅🤔🙃🤣🤷🤷♀️🤷🏻♂️😁 Loll

As we find out in either Lasher or Taltos (I can't remember which) Julien fathered plenty of children in his later years... Ancient Evelyn says that he fathered her only child (that was taken away from her) when she was a teenager and he was well into his 70's or even 80s.... This family. Oy vey.
It's just a visual aide / random word association to help try and keep track of who's who while she's talking about so many characters in one video, probably. Because they're book characters, they don't actually have official character artwork or actual actors playing them in the books-and the characters that have been cast for the tv series' version of things are often quite different from how they were described in the books.
Great summary ❤ I had to comment since this book is in my top 3 books of all times, and I re-read it every winter. I think Lasher stays away from Rowan bc Deirdre is still alive, and *cough* receiving him, and so he's content with that. As long as a living Mayfair will have him, he will stay with them. When Deirdre dies, he has to be with Rowan or not be empowered, essentially. IMO where Anne Rice drops the ball is 1- Rowan is so extremely boring. Over the years ive learned to skip the beginning part with her, the hospital, the boat, bc it is draggy. The 2nd thing is the absolutely dreadful sequels to this book, which get worse and worse. I only keep them because im a full set queen. What would have been FANTASTIC is for Rice or maybe her son, to have written a seperate novel for each past witch that thoroughly examines their lives, in their times. Because the past witches are the meat and potatoes of this story. And a side note, back in the old AOL dial up days, after i first discovered the novel, i found a website devoted to this story. The owner of the site was an artist and she took the books descriptions and made portraits of each character. Those drawings haunt me to this day because they were so similar to how i saw the players in my minds eye, and consequently very different than the actors and actresses that AMC has chosen. I wish id of thought to save those images, bc the page is long gone. I tell myself that maybe i will try to draw them one day. I couldnt come as close as that artist did, but it would be a cool project.
Oh wow! I remember that sight. The portraits WERE chosen well. I wish it was still available to see. Rowan was my least favorite of the witches. I hated the way she did Michael. Even the crossover with the vampire novels, she’s all over Lestat and there’s poor Michael, waiting on her again.
@cassietherainbowsend722 I KNOW! ugh. Michael did have his indiscretion with Mona, which was disturbing... but Rowan just didn't seem to deeply love him, you know? Maybe she couldn't, maybe she wasn't wired for it, I'm not sure? I wonder if other people copied those images from that site? It's raining today, maybe I'll try and dig through the web..
Have you tried the wayback machine? Maybe it was archived before it went offline? It's a real tragedy, sometimes, the things that have been lost or buried from the older internet days!
GoT is the same way. I was grossed and angered the 1st time, until i realized it all plays a part. And its also how things were done jn reality. Royal blood(family) and families of wealth and power , always consisted of inscest, Shockingly and disgusting enough. And the book is pretty old. Classic fantasy novels always always have shock factors. Like whyyy lol. But tysm for this video ❤❤❤ your animated in a way that keeps me engaged lol. W adhd thats pretty hard for me..new sub 🎉
Honestly I do care about incest in fantasy because it plays a big part in the story like with the Targaryens however in real life absolutely not I don’t agree with it.
Because they aren't always shock factors? It's often realism, and/or it's just following in the trend of old literature where certain themes were used as metaphorical or symbolic representations of other things. Like incest was often used as a literary representation/exploration of corruption.
So given the rampant amount of sggsual abuse happening to non-yt people at the hands of some yt Christian people (and how that affects habits, culture, etc)… some of this seems like it would be a “natural” result from the ethical disrepute of the time for certain groups that had those high types of instances Like the Texas chainsaw massacre family
Im assuming those are the carribean or some children had with enlaved folks in the new orleans plantation the one daughter seems very much like that New Orleans witch featured in AHS Coven that Kathy Bates played who kept slaves and did experiments on them instead she did it with her lovers, but we don't know if people were into owning humans they dont mind violating ther personhood for 'science" or necrophillya....yikes Madame Le Laurie je pen se

Obviously you do not like Anne Rice. You need to read the subtext. How you don’t feel the writing. I own first edition of all her stuff. Unfortunately you do not understand how this timeline and amazement most feel while reading her prose.
Agreed...I absolutely loved this Book. I have re read this several times and it never gets old or boring. The AMC show is garbage frankly. I tried to listen to her review ....you can see she isn't fan at all.
I agree as well.....why read a book just to ridicule it. Anne Rice is an amazing story teller and I love the way she writes in prose. She never got the credit she should have got for her amazing writing, all because of the nature of her stories. It's kinda like being a critic who can neither write or has any artist talent themselves. Why read something you don't like and than diss the writer........ everything comes down to personal perspective.....
I wrote a family tree back in the day with this book. Still think Hulu or Amazon would have done better. Especially since Amazon SELLS all of her stuff. Plus growing babies No Mona no Blackwood farm and no Rowan/lasher meet
Oh no, the grossest is Julian. His.... hands... are in everything in the family. Necro.. yeah, bad but at least that was a bit of a f ed up science experience.
it is the time before genetics, so they don't see anything wrong with being the biological father or daughter, I bet they don't even know the word biological
It’s horrible. Thankfully- Anne Rice has passed and didn’t see. She would be so pissed. Remember how mad she was about Tom Cruise being cast as Lestat?
@@dixieparrish1334 Remember how, after actually watching the movie, Anne Rice publicly apologized and emphatically praised the film and Tom Cruise's performance as Lestat??
Maybe this is not the content for you , we like to to laugh over here. Sometimes people think their parasocial relationships mean they can offer criticims or observations that really are not needed. You realize people edit videos and put a lot of work into them so they might have observed this and yet were ok with it. We will be sure issue you a refund at the door.
She is herself, if you don't like the way she laughs it's your problem. We are not at the library, we are not at the church, it's her youtube channel and she can laugh how she wants. Guess what... I find her laugh energising and positively infectious. What even is the point of your comment ? You expect her to think "oh, this person does not like my laugh, I'll try to laugh differently". No, just go away, and keep remarks like that to yourself, because it's rude.
I already said a similar thing in a different video: I like her Mayfair videos because I don't want to read hundreds of pages about witch history. Unfortunately the volume is off sometimes, I have to turn it up to understand her but then she laughs and it's really, really loud. Sometimes there are also volume spikes while she just talks (e.g. the "all" around 44:06). I can deal with the laughs (not enjoyable for me but oh well, I guess that's part of her personality - maybe a bit of nervousness too), I just wish the volume was more consistent!
There's a violent storm each time a Mayfair witch dies and Master passes on to the next witch.

I'm sure the book was more detailed with grossness lol I read VC Andrews books in High School in late 1990's early 2000's so I am no stranger to gross stuff but in this case no thank you I had enough. Maybe Anne should have released the history in a prequel book instead the same book
I wow… I’m not even going to attempt VC Andrews. Haha!
SPOILER?
I saw a family tree that had Cortland listed as Antha *and* Deirdre's father.
that's probably correct. You find out a bit more conflicting family history in the second book Lasher.
I want that hoodie
I read this series as a teen in the 1990s. I am horrified by what I was reading back then 😅
Lasher killed Cortland, not Carlotta.
Wait, so Lasher could cause a storm , but couldn't break her out of prison??? Lasher hella sus
Hahaha! I never thought of that.
Pretty sure he was done with Deborah and wanted to move on to Charlotte.
He already had his next witch by then so he no longer needed Deborah
I read the book when I was way young. Crazy me 😮
Great overview!!
*it is very similar to how vampires are made. it matches. the mythology is in alignment.* plus incest. _JC
"Dear Lord why?!" -Naughty Librarian, also me
I just finished Taltos book #3 and I'm kind of underwhelmed with the ending.
I think the story would be super hard to adapt for television. I think the show is taking parts of the books and doing it’s own thing.
@@TheNaughtyLibrarian Yeah, especially with only 8 eps, unfortunately. But I feel like (from what I've heard) the tv series is a lot less like it's just completely fabricated without anything ever actually even taken from the books at all than many book readers seem to give it credit for, too. Lol
" NOONE LIKES HER SHES THE KAREN OF THE FAMILY 💀💀"
Lasher's suits are getting curiouser and curiouser...
it also gave me a headache with their family tree! LOL!
Are They called Mayfair witches because that’s just their last name or because they came here on the Mayfair
Mayfair is their last name. They didn't come over to America until about 1800. :)
It goes back to the 1600s with Suzanne of the Maye Fair. Scottish Beltane celebration of rounding the May pole and then “other festivities” amongst the villagers where Suzanne became pregnant with Deborah.
I think you're referencing the ship Mayflower...pilgrims came over on the Mayflower, Mayfair is just a family name.
Does Michael ever find out that he’s also a Mayfair? Do we ever get Sister Bridget Marie’s full story?
Yes later on in the series.
"I'm praying for cusins."😂
Thanks for doing this. I read The Witching Hour a few decades ago and to this day it is still one of my favourite books. Ive read it several times.
I must disagree that the intricacies in history of the characters of the family tree didn't work. I found it extremely interesting and pertinent to the overall story.
To each their own.
I think the history was important too. I just would have liked it worked it into the story more organically.
Just found out that they gave a go for season 2 ,so...room for improvement?🤔 thanks for the video lovely!
Lovely video? Her historical oration would be so much better without the foul language.
@suzannekosic4088 hold on, you'll read about about incestuous witches but foul language offends you? 🤔
I really enjoyed season 1
Flowers in the attic...aye.
The family wreath 😊
Thank you for this act of community service. 😂😂😂 I DNF this book. I couldn’t make it. Then I googled the rest of the series and was like 😬😬😬😬. I also only read the first 2 vampire chronicle books. Your reviews of that series brought me here, and I’ve been enjoying your discussions! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful week!
thanks for coming watching these videos too!
I'd highly recommend reading the third VC book too, it's the best of the series imo.
@@Juleru Then again.... what exactly caused them to DNF the book? Maybe there's just something about Anne Rice's writing style and/or the content in these stories that simply isn't for them or their tastes-that's always fine, too. Pretty much nothing can really be for literally everyone. 🙂
Omg! Spoilers! But if Deborah was the earls kid and lasher was an earls kid…..are they all related/taltos descendants?
Honestly… that checks with the Mayfair’s. At Least there was at least a couple hundred years between them? 🤷♀️
Im checking in all late but planned this to keep me busy during the off season..JAN 5!!! MWS2!!👀👀🙏😎🔥✌️👁👑
so to hear u be repulsed about the incestry of the mayfairs my family is from the families broussards & lartique/lartigues😮😢 incestry was a real thing! Uncles aunts mom dads sister brother...yep gross american history finally coming out!! Love it🖤💜
As we find out in either Lasher or Taltos (I can't remember which) Julien fathered plenty of children in his later years... Ancient Evelyn says that he fathered her only child (that was taken away from her) when she was a teenager and he was well into his 70's or even 80s.... This family. Oy vey.
Lol and here I went through the trouble of re reading the book you would’ve saved me a lot of time 😂
Ha! Well I’m going to be posting videos on the other two books in the series as well so stay tuned
I'm still going to read the book for myself eventually anyway.😊 Lol
Great recap of the book. I favor the Witch books over the vampire ones simply because witches are no where near as whiny as Rice's vampires lol
😆😆😆
Suzanne was a midwife in training. I don’t get why you’re discounting her as something inconsequential.
I admire Annie Rice for creating the ways the educated women became apart of America.
Wait. That is Julian hough . I’m so confused.
@@anotherlittlepieceofmyartdid you find the website?
Have you tried the wayback machine? Maybe it was archived before it went offline?
It's a real tragedy, sometimes, the things that have been lost or buried from the older internet days!
bro! do it!
Shout out from the West Indies 😊
So given the rampant amount of sggsual abuse happening to non-yt people at the hands of some yt Christian people (and how that affects habits, culture, etc)… some of this seems like it would be a “natural” result from the ethical disrepute of the time for certain groups that had those high types of instances
Like the Texas chainsaw massacre family
Where do the Haitian Mayfairs come in?
Im assuming those are the carribean or some children had with enlaved folks in the new orleans plantation the one daughter seems very much like that New Orleans witch featured in AHS Coven that Kathy Bates played who kept slaves and did experiments on them instead she did it with her lovers, but we don't know if people were into owning humans they dont mind violating ther personhood for 'science" or necrophillya....yikes Madame Le Laurie je pen se
Bestie I need a visual family tree I’m begging
I don't even think this is a tree anymore. Its really more of a jumbled pile of sticks on the ground. hahaha
@@TheNaughtyLibrarian You'd probably need one of those 3-dimensional dream board / mind map things or whatever, maybe. I can't remember for the life of me what they're actually called right now.😅🙃🤣
I'm rereading the mass paperback version of THE WITCHING HOUR which is 1038 pages plus A excerpt of Anne Ridge's novel VIOLIN.

it's not erotic horror unless the sex scenes disgust you, that's just what that genre is
is an extreme cancelable history for modern standards
I hate the show. AMC gutted that book. There was so much they could have done.
Wouldn't it be nice if books became unreadable simply by storing them horizontally, like vinyl?
P.s. true blood and twilight killed the whole genre
@@kimgalantini1185 (You know that Anne Rice actually really liked True Blood and talked many times about how great/fun she thought it was, right?)
Julian & his daughter MaryBeth are the parents of Stella.
Biology pre-dates genetics, I think.😅

First she should start by saying fiction!
There’s no point even explaining the history of this family to the show watchers. The show is NOTHING like the books. Nothing. Trash.
Wow... Yes.
It’s horrible. Thankfully- Anne Rice has passed and didn’t see. She would be so pissed. Remember how mad she was about Tom Cruise being cast as Lestat?

No qualified to give any input. Who are you?
Sorry to say that, but your laughing is so loud and the timing of it is just strange...
Weird comment
I already said a similar thing in a different video: I like her Mayfair videos because I don't want to read hundreds of pages about witch history. Unfortunately the volume is off sometimes, I have to turn it up to understand her but then she laughs and it's really, really loud. Sometimes there are also volume spikes while she just talks (e.g. the "all" around 44:06). I can deal with the laughs (not enjoyable for me but oh well, I guess that's part of her personality - maybe a bit of nervousness too), I just wish the volume was more consistent!
I loved the laugh. I thought it was infectious. “Dierdra grows up in the Mayfair house… with Carlotta!! Bahahaha” 😂😂😂 Gold.
Must you used such foul language?
