Love the Naughty Librarian and the way she can review either a book or a show. She has a way of breathing life into a subject. Thanks, I have been a fan for two months now.
Aww thanks so much!
In the book they talk about the cloudiness of her eyes, her contacts weren't meant necessarily to make her eyes match Rowan's but to make her look like she is in a fog and not there.
I can see that. But even younger Dierdre's contacts look questionable and it continues on into episode 2.
Interview with the Vampire on AMC was amazing. This tho, it’s not looking good
To be fair, the source materials are similarly unevenly matched 🤐
I'm skeptical... I mean, Claudia GROWS! (The whole point of her is being the tragic child - who grows in the mind, but not in the body). And Armand, who is a middling vampire WALKS THE SUN. Even the oldest in the book can't control a powerful urge to sleep when the sun rises.
Your recap made more sense than the mess they had with going back and forth. Loved watching this more than the show lol.. I will power through for Lestat to make a appearance on a Mayfair season
I'd love an Interview with the Vampire cameo!
They have so many novels to get through before that would happen. #bloodcanticle.
@@jamesieboy666doesn’t matter with these show runners
Lord, please let it be so!!! Yes!!
i loved the witching hour book
Back in the day I bought "The Witches Companion: The Official Guide to Anne Rice's Lives of the Mayfair Witches" by Katherine Ramsland. It really helped fill in the backstories and understanding of who characters are. There's also one for the Vampire Chronicles too.
ooo that sounds like it would be really helpful for keeping everything straight
I agree about patriarchy beeig on the nose🤦🏻♀️ What bothered me about this episode is Lasher not seeing Deirdre for months, pendant in weird key shape, wonky CGI, Talamasca lady somehow knowing Lasher is “on the move”
I just hope there aren’t more deviations from the books..
That line killed me. "Lasher is on the move". Move to where?
@@freddyjafar1490 exactly! also how would they know, they don’t even know what he is yet they can somehow track him🤦🏻♀️
@@bimblaq I think Mayfair Witches is a comedy cos I couldn't help myself 😂😂😂
Really just watched to make sure IWTV stays on. It was a good start, I guess and will continue to watch with hope.
Same. It's not a horrible show by any means, but it's not something I would watch if it wasn't a part of the Immortal Universe. We need these other shows to do well.
@@_notmyproblem_ We are in agreement, but if it doesn't get better and I will just DVR it and hope that helps ratings. Because I NEED season 2 of IWTV 🙂🙃😉
@@jordanparker657 AMC really needs to distribute IWTV to other streaming sites like Netflix like they did with Better Call Saul and Walking Dead. They can't rely just on AMC+ alone regardless of how well it's doing. It just doesn't have the reach, nor generate the same amount of profit.
@@_notmyproblem_ I totally agree, I think I have seen it mentioned in another comment. It would be smart. Plus I think they staggered the show itself, like here in the US it started in October. In Poland, on Nov 7th (Lestat's BD) and England after that. But I did read it had tremendous ratings. It could be even a larger audience if they went with your suggestion. If it was me, hell, I would put it on Pluto, Tubi, Hulu, everywhere to get people interested, then I would have narrowed access in later seasons...maybe ❤️
@@jordanparker657 I thought the traditional TV ratings were average? In streaming it was one of the most popular and in demand according to analytics and ofc it was the most successful launch on AMC+ by 3x. But it just doesn't bring in enough revenue as traditional cable with ads + the fact that traditional cable if pretty much dying in the age of fast access mega streaming channels. AMC basically fumbled it and didn't plan it properly.
The contacts show the cloudy eyes of a person who has been on Thorazine for a long time.
I loved the book! This show is goofy AF. The elevator shot! Deirdre looks like some crazy blow-up doll mannequin 🤣 I found you because of it, Naughty Librarian! You are AMAZING 👏💕😊
Thanks for watching! It wasn’t the best dummy but I guess they were trying their best. 🤷♀️ haha
I agree with you about all of the shortcuts for the budget lol this show clearly isn’t getting the rings of power treatment but it’s still good
Fantastic recap! Very entertaining and validated my own feelings towards the show. Exactly how I like it. 😂 Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Yeah I watched the first episode with a great friend of mine she is also a huge fan of the vampire Chronicles neither of us have read the books but the movies and tv shows are still awesome and we loved the IWTV tv show and but Mayfair Witches episode 1 it was pretty good very good not IWTV episode 1 great but that's a tall order Lol and this episode was still very interesting and I like mystery aspect, I can see this show being a slow burn in general which is fine but also let's pick it up a little Lol
i agree. Its definitely a slow start but I'm hopeful things will pick up. I genuinely want the show to do well.
Thing is, it’s really not. This show is just diving in with little to no character development. The first 200 pages of the book is all character development and setup, could easily take half 4+ episodes for Rowan to even get to New Orleans, but that would require the show to write two excellent characters like Michael curry and Aaron Lightner instead of this boring mashup of the two.
It's not entirely awful, but it's not great either. I don't think AMC are the right network to make this series to be honest. They won't deal with all the questionable material these books have in abundance. Even the Interview with the Vampire series has some pretty intense stuff that I think they'll water down, Mayfair is so much worse. It's a shame because it won't really be The Lives of the Mayfair Witches without it. I also don't like the fact Michael and Aaron are combined. Especially Michael! He is such an important character. Maybe it's me but Lasher seems way off. You have cast Jack Huston and you've made him so meh. Why! I wouldn't get your hopes up, it doesn't get better based on the previews. Maybe the last three episodes pick up a bit 🤞🏻 Rant over 😆
I LOVED Jack Huston's character in Boardwalk Empire! In this I was like "who is that creeper guy that keeps showing up" 😂 I'm going to keep watching because I did enjoy the spooky vibes and the beautiful sets and to keep supporting the Immortal Universe.
@@_notmyproblem_ - My thoughts exactly! He comes across as a creep rather than this entity/being thats supposed to ooze charisma and charm. I mean, I guess he is a creep, but in an endearing one lol. In this version he has no charisma whatsoever. That's gotta be on the writing cause Jack Huston has bags of charisma. Another thing thats frustrating is Daddario has no chemistry with Chirisa or Huston! That's an issue considering their her main love/lust interests. Say what you will about the books, the material is heavy and sex is an integral part of the story. Yet the series is severely lacking in that department. And what we do see is so bland it may as well not be included at all. The last three episodes better be amazing, else I'm out. Similar to Interview, this is way too transgressive for AMC. But at least Interview was a lot stronger with great performances. This is so middle of the road fluff in my opinion. It's a big step down it terms of quality and that's a shame because they're great books. Like you, I'll continue to watch the show and support the Immortal Universe if only for the Interview with the Vampire series. We must get to season three for the beginning of The Vampire Lestat.
@ Yeah, there doesn't seem to be much chemistry between any of the actors from what I saw in the pilot. Even in couple of interviews that I saw of them they almost seemed bored, like it's a chore to be there lol.
I've never seen (or heard of) Jack Huston before this and he really made no real positive impression on me so far in 'Mayfair Witches'. He just felt too bland to be Lasher. I'm hoping that changes, especially as I'd think the person playing him should be very charismatic instead. We'll see.
@@NicoleM_radiantbaby Oh please watch Boardwalk Empire! It's a great show and Jack Huston is great in it. He plays this severely wounded WW1 vet that used to be sharpshooter and becomes affiliated with the gangs in New Jersey. His character in that show is very tortured and a man of few words but his presence was amazing. So it's kind of sad he's not able to pull this off here. Goes to show how writing and directing can affect even an actor like him. Fun note, if you watched IWTV, Rolin Jones the creator actually wrote a couple of episodes for that show.
#justicefordierdre yessss. Love Annabeth Gish since X-Files days. I'm going back thru your recaps and starting the Taltos book. I liked The Witching Hour book but not as much as I thought I did (~20 years ago).
*i love that you h8ted the bk.* it gave me some new insights. this show will be clumsy...but not iwtv bad. it may just be disco witches all over again. _JC
Wow. To each his own, but I cannot imagine thinking IWTV is bad at all, but certainly not worse than this show.
I was also really confused as to why they chose to combine Michael and Aaron’s characters. I think they were cheap on lots of stuff in this new series. I think Lasher/Cortland/Rowan are the closest to their book counterparts. I couldn’t stand the Interview with the Vampire tv series, but I was comparing it more to the movie than the book. Was the Mayfair with series ever turned into a movie at some time in the past?
I don't know why nobody is talking about how visually painful this show is. It's so dark, you can barely see anything.
It goes from excessively dark to SHOCKINGLY bright and blue. It is jarring
About her eyes… from the book: “And the patient’s eyes, for all their listless stare, were a clear blue”. So yes, REALLY bad contacts. They make such realistic colored contacts now available to regular ole people so COME ON!!!
Hi ! New member here. I really enjoyed your Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles. Can you please review MERRICK. It's a cross-over stand alone vampire - Mayfair Witches book. Look forward to your I got drunk and read MERRICK post.
Thank you! I'm planning on still reading the rest of the Vampire Chronicles series. I just needed to take a quick breather this month. But I'll get to Merrick soon enough
For me, leaving Michael out of things diminishes a significant section of Rowan's story, so I can't figure out why I should even bother with the series if the storyline is that vastly different
I tried so hard, but I just can’t make myself get through it. Such a let down after Interview with the Vampire.
SOLUTION : the whole mayfair family 51/50's Carlotta and gives that crone a taste of her own medicine, *heh*, for abusing Deirdre.
but really, it seems like everyone in the family seems to know how awful carlotta is and yet nothing is done.
I want to like this but after 3 episodes I've given up. it's simple as this...BORING!!! I'll probably binge watch it in the summer when nothing else is on. interview with the Vampire...fantastic. Can't wait for S2. Mayfair Witches....forgettable and dull. After 10 mins. I'm looking doing other things to pass the time.
*is rowan not a red head? are all the mayfairs not red heads? like mekare & maharhet?* did i make that up. rowan may have brown hair. idk anymore. i read witching hr for a chick you know. hard to say what cmts ive left or whr. but it panned out. w her and 3 others in her group of friends end of school & 1st yr out. it was gr8.
shes an environmental lawyer now. maybe i should give her this copy of her book back. _JC
In the book series Rowan has fair hair but another character, Mona Mayfair, has red. You're right about Rice's witches mostly being redheads, like Mekare, Maharet & Jesse in The Vampire Chronicles.
In the book, the Mayfair witches hair colors vary. The only red-haired witch in the line was Mona. Several, such as Deborah, Stella, Dierdre, Mary Beth, and Marguerite, had black hair. Rowan is "Ash blonde". Charlotte had blonde hair. I don't think they gave too much physical description of the others, but those were the ones who stood out to me just from memory. There was Irish, Scottish, Scandinavia, and French ancestry in the family.
Nope. Rowan is blonde. She kinda proves that the power doesn't come with red hair attached.
I’m just not feeling the Lasher casting. To me, he has no chemistry. Period. As for the rest, I’m giving it another episode or two. Weirdly, I don’t mind that it isn’t sticking to the book… if it works. It’s just, thus far, it’s not promising.
Ya… I’m a little underwhelmed myself. I wish they were actually giving Lasher something to do because so far he’s been under utilized
He needed to be freaking Jude Law or at least a VERY GOOD Knockoff oozing sezzzzy.......something is off he was sexy-strange in Boardwalk Empire...but not here....its the hair...get the hair off his neck...
I struggled with Lasher for that reason. Zero charisma, charm or sex appeal. He is just creepy.
I also had a hard time with Rowan and Carlotta. Those actresses are just bad to me.
Who are your funko pops? The one with the bow is super cute 🥰
I have a lot of the RuPaul’s Drag Race pops.
Isn't Michael also Rowan's cousin or brother meaning the show changed it to avoid incest
Michael ended up being her cousin but pretty far removed from her
Michael ended up being her cousin but pretty far removed
I immediately subscribed when I peeped the Biggie tee. 👋🏽 GIRL!!! and she loves books!!! YES!!! So far my favorite people are the crazy Aunt [the actress is one of favorites anyway, when she has to deliver "crazy" she NEVER misses] and the depraved hedonistic Uncle who has the party house and FABULOUS wardrobe, lol.
Haha! Thanks for subscribing. Carlotta gets even crazier by episode 4 and I’m just going to say, NEVER trust Cortland.
10:40 the CG was extremely low qual. _JC
they should have chosen old school real makeup latex instead...it would have been worth it
All due, NO CONTACT LENS MADE , will match Alexandra’s eyes…
This show is so CW quality. I thought they were trying to make Deirdre a blind character with those contacts. They are terrible😂
It's been a while since I read the book.
They are just using the names of Anne's books for recognition for their lame shows.
your recap was way better than the show. sorry but this is about to go negative. i saw a story trying to convey that women, and some in particular, are only valued for their children. and once a child is born, that woman's life is non-existent. it was all a little too on the nose and sad for me. there was no horror, there was nothing sultry....nothing. i wish they had deviated from the book and taken more of the route that was taken for interview with the vampire. a modern retelling. the themes around women in this book were too outdated, even with characters from older generations. i don't think i'll be able to watch this show. it's just sad.
I honestly don't like when they take a book, and change it to make a show/movie. Most aren't as good
wait..... did ii just watch a video on how bad you thought the first book were..... but you wanted to watch the show.....Ok.
This show is horrible.
You’re crazy this show is terrible. The book is phenomenal. I understand the book has some weird sex shit in it, but you can’t deny it’s genius.
I agree with you about all of the shortcuts for the budget lol this show clearly isn’t getting the rings of power treatment but it’s still good
