      I can’t reply for gordanstewart, but anybody senior members in the military knew that Russia was continuing its SSBN patrols off the coasts of North America. The Cold War didn’t stop…they just cut numbers of obsolete equipment, kept the newer stuff in service, and continued developing. The promising projects. The lying and naïve Western press invented the “peace dividend” and focused on how wonderful Russia was opening up and developing…Nobody, in public, asked how a lowly Lt. Colonel KGB officer became the new dictator for life…so, from a military perspective, nobody thought things had fundamentally changed.

    • @retix11
      @retix11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is untrue. Really you could argue the opposite, the West perceived Russia as becoming less relevant, this is what some Russians don't like, they want to be seen as a world power. The West very much perceived the cold war was over. But with a population comparable to Mexico and an economy the size of Australia, this isn't happening. Putin wants to return Russia to soviet era economy, power and respect and that's what his invasion(s) are all about.

    How is it that the BBC Russia corresondent, Steve Rosenberg, can travel freely and apparently report uncensored in Russia while the UK close down Russia Today and other Russian media outlets? It would be interesting to see the equivalent exercise in UK by a prominent Russian reporter. It seems that for relations to improve between Russia and the west, the west (mainly US) would prefer a return of another Boris Yeltsin and Russia would like the west to strictly adhere to the UN Charter and International Law.

    I think people underestimate the effectiveness of propaganda and it's true purpose. There seems to be an assumption that if people don't fully believe what is being told to them, then propaganda has failed. However, the goal of propaganda is not to change how someone thinks, but rather how they act. A person can remain skeptical at their core, but so long as they espouse the correct narrative and demonstrate the preferred action (or inaction), then the message has done it's job.

    Years ago I visited Russia and the majority of my time was spent in the homes of average Russian families. I was greeted by great hospitality and curiosity. At one point I was in a rural village speaking English and some of the neighbors and neighborhood children were quite excited to have an American visit their little village. In fact one young boy spent the entire day giving me Russian language lessons. The most interesting thing politically was when a conversation about the upcoming US election (McCain vs Obama) came up. They wanted to know my opinions on the two, who I was going to vote for and they freely shared their thoughts on the two. When I turned around and asked a simple question about Putin…WOW. Conversation came to a complete stop. The older folks just had a look of fear on their face, others looked around suspicious and what not…not because of Putin per se, but because of their own childhoods growing up. One of the young adults in the room said, “The older generation does not talk about Russian politics.” My experience is that most “every day people” from almost any country likes the “every day people” from other countries…but they can’t always say it.

      Politics is the mechanism that manages the power to do that. It's not about the politicians, so much as war isn't about the soldiers. Just two people trying to make any fundamental change at a state level is politics. We don't just magically know what's right and wrong. Try to think of something that is absolutely right and good - you'll find a group of people in your country that believe in the complete opposite. You'll also find people that disagree with it being absolute even if they agree in principle, and there's even a different kind of people that will argue with you on how such right and wrong should be established in the country. To make matters even more complicated, people can change their opinions and stances and even ally with different groups once their own loses out or is threatened by a bigger one.
      Now a simple 9-5 job person will probably want to ignore all that and just do what they can, right? That's fine and all, but these complications will not ignore *you*. The moment this person tries to do even one thing they think is best, they're joining a group. They'll become the target of an enemy group, and even their own group may attempt to get closer to this person and cause more and more complications in their life. It's so intimidating! There is no escape, and that's why there's such a high number of politically apathetic people in a lot of countries. The moment you try making life "what it should be" you're a target and may end up in a place of responsibility where your actions can affect entire countries.

      It's like a sport, you have to understand that your opponent wants to win the game, and what they see as the best way to do that. Writing off their goals and how they see the game as propaganda and brainwashing and not the "true" reason they are doing things because it conflicts with your goal to win the game isn't a good strategy for you to win.

Pretty impressive, that Russia managed to repel a counteroffensive, of NATO trained and equiped troops (supported by 40 countries). You need a harsh reality check, instead of consuming 1 source of information (western propaganda). Russia is still advancing, while fighting with shovels,right?
