Russia’s elite marines sent into death trap in Ukraine | BBC News

  • In October 2022, Russia sent men from its elite 155th Marine Brigade, the “Black Berets” to take the town of Vuhledar in Ukraine.
In a rare protest letter, the Black Berets claimed that “inept” commanders cost them 300 men in just four days, and that the same commanders called them “meat”.
The Russian authorities denied the number of losses. But who was right?
Piecing together online testimonies, death records and battle footage BBC Eye found evidence that glaring tactical mistakes caused one of the highest concentrations of losses for a single Russian unit since the beginning of the war.

@@LeonKakashi If a large portion of conscripts are inmates from prisons then I would think fighting would be a better alternative. More over there are Russian units called ''blocking units'' in Ukraine that will kill any Russian soldier that retreats or surrenders. obviously blocking units aren't everywhere but they are still prominent in many places. also killing the commissar would only result in your own execution/imprisonment. and finally fleeing conscription as you should know is highly dangerous. if you get caught you'll just be forced into the frontline anyway. As for they ''all have subpar AKs'' you can literally spend 15 seconds and find tons of images of Russian conscripts using mosin nagants. they are also missing any sort of body armour. most of their uniforms are just winter digi flora coats and not actual combat uniforms. and if they aren't getting a 6b47 helmet it's usually an old soviet era steel helmet without any kevlar or fibres. Basically the average man isn't going to risk getting executed/imprisoned for fleeing conscription nor are they going to take the risk of getting executed by a blocking squad if they retreat/surrender.

    • @katong1953
      @katong1953 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@davidblair. Those who brought war most be condemned. That's simple enough. So, Boris Johnson, who as US lapdog emissary, killed the prospective agreement between Russia and Ukraine in April 2022, immediately comes to mind as one who must be condemmed and called to account.
Going further back, the US empire and NATO, both foreign powers, who in collaboration with Ukrainian traitors, overthrew the democratically elected government of Ukraine in 2014, and replaced it with an illegal regime in Kyiv, which immediately banned the Russian language, and set out to persecute Russian speakers, and which events started the Ukraine war, must also be condemned and called to account. Even NATO's idiot secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, in a Freudian slip, has confessed that the Ukraine war started in 2014. It's on video, and I've seen it in the Alex Christoforou and Richard Medhurst channels.
What about Vladamir Putin? For 8 long years, he told the people of Donbass to give the Minsk Agreements a chance, which therefore gives the lie to the propaganda that he wanted to recreate the Russian or Soviet empire. The definitve rejection of Russian peace overtures was Blinken's rejection of Lavrov's written proposal in 2021/2022 not to let Ukraine join NATO -- on the filmsy ground that Ukraine as a sovereign nation had the right to join whatever organization it wanted. That may be so, but the US, having promised Russia that NATO would not advance an inch east of a reunited Germany, had the obligation not to allow Ukraine into NATO. But the US was arrogant, haughty and morally bankrupt.
Putin saw barbarians at the gates, and he had to push back. If Ukraine joins NATO, US empire nuclear missiles stationed there would need only about 6 minutes to reach Moscow. Putin had no intention to allow himself or future Russian presidents only 6 minutes to decide whether to end humanity.
And now, we have this report that Russia had sent its troops in human wave attacks in Ukraine. The one thing that has marked Russia's strategy is its care to minimize its own casuslties. At the start of its special military operation, it had only 125,000 troops in Ukraine. So I'm careful about propaganda from Ukraine, the US empire and the west in general. Even today, the west is trying to turn defeat into victory with unrelenting 24/7 propaganda, much of it plucked from the air. The US empire and Europe have lost the Ukraine war. Watch it, the chicken is coming home to roost.

That was a very powerful and well researched report.. It brings it home to see the loss and grief when a family doesn't know what happened to their son. Only to finally discover that he died a terrible death. This scenario is being played out for hundreds of thousands of Russian families with their young men and women getting killed or wounded. Putin was talking in his recent long speech about another round of conscription to force another half a million citizens into the meat grinder. To be frozen, abused, terrified, under paid and then often killed or wounded all to try and gain control of their neighbour’s lands. Borders are just artificial lines drawn on maps. Stay the right side of it and live your life in peace and show kindness to your neighbours. Play them at sport and holiday with them. But don't use force or aggression. No matter what the propaganda is telling you. Go home to your families in Russia for Christmas and don't come back. And then chose a new leader who has more respect for the lives of all of the citizens. Have a peaceful New Year. The killing needs to stop 🙏

When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one without the rifle that is following picks up the rifle and shoots” I wonder if Russian soldiers are thinking who is the real enemy? Over a decade ago I watched a travel documentary series on Eastern Europe, the episodes about Russia were like a normal travel show up to a point when the journalist visited a sports club in a Russian city where young men were training in various martial arts. Suddenly the whole tone changed, and the Russian guys started talking about 'The evil West' and how they were going to fight to defend Russia. This was long before the events in Donbass had really erupted, and it was a time when most Westerners regarded Russia as friendly. There had been no real issues or international disagreements, so it was shocking to hear the hatred and paranoia being spoken. It seemed very sinister, and I wondered was it just that particular club, or was there something else going on in Russian society that no Western news had any idea about ? Time has revealed that my suspicions were right. Putin has been preparing Russian people for a war with the West for a long time.

@@igorkim3558 you forget a crucial difference, for russia stakes are very low, they are an invader and they are simply loosing territory which doesn't belong to them in the first place, meanwhile for Ukraine loosing territory means people loosing their homes and russians getting closer to their goal of destroying Ukraine as a nation and as a state so it makes sense they try to hold territory and are reluctant to retreat, although sometimes to their own detriment. Otherwise It's not uncommon for russians to shoot their own soldiers when they refuse to go into the grinder, especially if you're from one of those ex-con meat brigades.
Also russia doesn't need to hold onto all of the territory, I think in spring of 2022 russia realized they can't take Ukraine and their best option right now is to hold onto as much territory as they can and freeze the conflict to get some breathing room and then attack some other time. The only time they really retreated was from Kherson, but it wasn't to save troops, it was due to impossibility of holding that position, their supply lines were cut and each time they tried to move troops over the river they were destroyed, so they retreated from a no-win scenario into a more secure position over the river, consistent with their new strategy of war of attrition and freezing the conflict.

After this investigation, are we supposed to pity russia's "elite" marines? The saddest part of this all is that russia is losing murderers, rapists, sadists and all kinds of other trash, while Ukrainian losses include highly-educated people, scientists, engineers, athletes, singers, actors...

Pretty sure there was valuable young lifes in both sides. A lot of young russians don't chose to be drafted, actually a lot of the people caugth by police in protests against the war was forced to the war

Whats good is their girlfriends and wives are now flooding western dating sites wanting to date Western men. I've dated a few. What surprised me was the wives get paid a small amount for their husbands death, wWhich is enough that they pay for the flights out of Russia. It's fantastic for us. Although I do feel a little bit sorry for the Russian men as not their fault Putin is mad. and their wives so quick to move on

What happened?,the same as what happened to Russia's highly trained and respected Spetsnaz and Airborne troops, morte, squandered in a ill fated, poorly planned, unjust invasion of a sovereign state.

Theres a 50% chance the foreman is filming this to send to the shop with a note:
"Why you should send us a mechanical bender."
Seriously. A chicago fits in a 4x4, is easy to use, and is cheap. Especially compared to the cost of 2-3 JWs watching a third poledancing with the 1-1/4 hand bender.

My good name is Durgesh and my sympathy is with the people of Ukraine. Despite conducting a military operation for 663 days, Russia has been unable to assert control over the capital of Ukraine. As an Indian, I believe that it is crucial not to overlook the unreliability of Russian military equipment, as a significant portion of my India's military arsenal is sourced from Russia.
