Nice road trip video but i could not help but notice poor Ram J sitting there with Light Force size tears watching Mr Johnson play with the new kid 'again' while his rear end is still unlocked ! Keep the Tahoe content coming though it's great !
So true, so true. I took Ram Johnson to lunch yesterday and realized how amazing that truck is again... got to do more research on locker options. I don't want to do what I did in the Tahoe to the Ram... it's too good for a full time locker but there doesn't seem to be a selectable option I can find yet.
I don’t k ow if anyone will read this but here is my story about my 95 Tahoe in Phoenix az. I bought it June 3rd needing brakes, front end, axle seal, tires, valve cover, and water pump. I took it up to flagstaff (2 hr drive), left at 5 pm, for my birthday but a trailer crash caused a wildfire and made it a 9hr reroute STILL in the same state. Around 10pm my abs used whatever life left my brakes had on a sudden stop and shot em. For 4 hours in deer infested dark mountain roads I was driving without any breaks, riding 3rd gear on 7% incline. Landed in flagstaff at 3am. Drove home 3h30min the same exact way but with 7% decline. The truck has since been fixed and was so thankful this truck can just take it.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful. Cardboard writing is roadkill episode style. On a higher mileage engine lets say above 150,000 that you just bought ( not entirely sure how many miles you have) I would keep to conventional. @@AutoEdits The seals are use to that engine oil. Synthetic has a faster flow rate than conventional. In a low mileage vehicle, nothing wrong with going synthetic, but from what I learned, I will only do it if its been relatively close to the rebuild mileage. I did the proper break in procedure, then synthetic at 3500 miles on the rebuild. Race engines might run it for a short time with conventional then synthetic, or run straight to synthetic. If its got high mileage, stick to conventional so that you don't risk leaks. Again, I don't know how many miles you have, but with high miles on a motor that has been using conventional, I personally would not switch to synthetic. Its still do at your own risk.
Always love AutoEdits road trips. Too bad the weather chased you out before you could get the tires dirty. One day I will wheel that area of CA, but it’s a bit more than a day trip from the UP. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you! I had planned on renting a kayak for a few minutes on the water and then to go hit a dirt trail to a campground but got bamboozled by the blizzard! I'll get back there!
Yes! More Tahoe! The steering shaft rag joint can definitely cause a lot of that loose feel. I would look into replacing atleast the rag joint itself along with your other upgrades.
Love the Tahoe vids bro. I owned a 97 Tahoe back in like 2001.. only complaint was because it was so big/roomy my wife would always show up with some big piece of furniture.
Two years ago I was on a road trip starting in LA in the middle of May & ending in Denver three weeks later took in Tahoe then hwy 50 then headed north out of Salt lake to Idaho then Wyoming & Colorado saw snow in every state and every terrain, still paying for it 💷😉
As a 1995 Tahoe owner, very interested in this build. One thing though, with the gearing change your speedo/odor readings are off by about 15%. Mileage and range are much lower.
There is a pretty cool trail that is definitely not hard that is about 15 min or so in Nevada from South Lake Tahoe called Genoa Peak. Its about 11 miles long with several spur trails that are also very easy. I dont believe dispersed camping is allowed, but if you are staying in Tahoe, its a great trail that you can spend anywhere from a couple of hours to most of a day on just exploring and playing.
Good lord man Santa Cruz to Tahoe alone are long ass drives and I’m from San Jose (in the middle), But So cal then Santa Cruz then all the way to Lake Tahoe that’s a trek my friend.
Another great video, thanks Jason. The weather in Tahoe looked like fun if you would have had time to stay through the storm. What camera setup do you use? Specifically, what mount did you use to capture the whole driver's side of the Tahoe from the gas cap forward? Also, in the video showing your new locker, what camera mount did you use under the Tahoe? Great camera shots and very stable. Always enjoy your stuff. Keep it up. Thanks
Im looking forward to seeing you instal the kryptonite and getting your thoughts. Also hoping to see if you decide on some skid plates or rock sliders and how you plan to solve that. Love this build.
Good catch... the speedo in this video is incorrect. I have since calibrated the speedo th-cam.com/video/fI25__UAHVk/w-d-xo.html and the 80mph RPM is about 2500 and very comfortable.
I've always switched over to a synthetic oil in every vehicle I had. I've personally never had an issue with it, heard horror stories but nothing has ever happened to me. So I'm gonna keep with it.
Yeah the Pat's are a great all around tire for me. If money were no object... I would put that "E-rod" LT engine and trans kit in here... 550 hp AND smog legal here in California!
That's pretty ballsy of Kryptonite to give a lifetime warranty on offroad steering parts...I'm really digging this Tahoe, especially when you said it's averaging 18mpg with 35's and 4.56's...my '06 Xterra on metric 33's only averages 15mpg, but it has factory 3.13 gears and a 4" lift...I wish I had money to travel this year, I'd love to plan a cross country trip from Minnesota out to Idaho or Utah to get together with you and do some wheeling and camping in our SUVs...
This little V8 feels like it's hardly working to keep the truck hurtling down the highway. I might have cheated and added one of those Lucas fuel additives you get at the check out of pep boys at each fill up. Kind of thinking they worked??? Hey, you never know when we might catch up in the middle of the states to wheel!
Jason, you poor soul. Never been to Tahoe before? I was there for my B-day last week. Yeah, it's got that "rich people's play ground" stigma but year round outdoor activities, I love it up there. Glad you experienced Tahoe in a Tahoe.

My 99 tahoe was like that, gear box was so worn out it would wander from left to right. New gear box maybe pitman and idler should clear that up. Now my 99 suburban with 217k has a perfect gear box and goes straight as an arrow down the road.
Had a 99 and honestly it had its couple of bad points but it was by far one of my favorite vehicles I’ve ever owned and regret ever selling it ….. might have to get another
@@AutoEdits well I might get a little excited when I see you do a video in my area but it's happened twice now! I think one of the first videos I saw was when you almost got stuck outside Sparks, NV. Count me in if you ever consider it in the a Reno Tahoe area! 🍻
Jason, you mentioned you are getting 18 +/- mpg on the highway. What, if any, modifications have you made to accomplish that performance. I understand you have 456 gearing. We drive a 98 5.7/350 K1500 Tahoe on 35's with 411 gearing, 14 bolt dif, rear ARB air locker, we only get about 10-12 mpg. (Aside, I am told there is no front locker on the market to fit this rig. From you knowledge is this true?) At best when it was stock we got 14 mpg. We have own this rig since 2000, started rebuilding it a couple of years ago. Any suggestions? Thanks
Getting 18 was only done doing math on google maps routes ... now that I have the speedo calibrated correctly the more accurate math sees closer to 16... but staying under 70 and the Milestar tires at 32 psi are remarkable on the highway. About that front locker, I've been told the smaller cast housings of the front differentials aren't really strong enough to survive a locker. So it's for the best not to install one... however, I've notice the 2500 trucks have a different front diff housing that can handle a locker... just finding one and making it work would be the challenge.
Hey Jason, can you post the link to that hand pump for draining transmission fluid? I'm about to service my transmission on my 2004 Durango 5.7, and that tool might help!
I have taken the truck up a DRY twisty canyon and it was totally fine. The thing I'm interested in finding out is how it does on a wet or icy canyon road... we'll see!
Interesting data, thanks... yes I'm going to lift it but resisting because I really like the way it looks right now and need to figure out the best riding lift... I don't want to "ruin" how comfortable it is.
@@AutoEdits my suburban has a 7.4 L vortec 454. Like mentioned above it’s way heavier. Besides that just has some headers. I was super shocked you were able to fit 35’s I’m running way smaller tires 265/75/16 with stock suspension also
how many miles you got on that beast? I got a 95 k1500 suburban, with 162000 miles, no cat, runs great but considering cummins 12 valve swap with solid axle swap but really want to keep the center of gravity low, decisions decisions, enjoying the content keep it up!
Thanks! I did use gps and actual math at the gas pumps to get 18.1 overall average. I did use one bottle of Lucas Oil "tune up in a bottle" Injector cleaner at each of the 3 fuel stops and honestly feel that stuff made a difference.
Good. In my experience with that generation truck, the idler usually wears Fastest. If you have an Astro van you can change them once a week. 😆 Someday I’m going to need a tutorial on how to do a time lapse on the go Pro. All I get are stills and they’re hard for me to deal with. (By me I mean Terina)
@@Beat98TJ Ah, I can help with that one right now! There's two time lapse settings in there... on the older cameras make sure to use the one inside the VIDEO menu not the photo menu. You'll know you have the right setting when it asks you how many frames per second and I set that to .5 seconds On the gopro9 inside the time lapse settings it will ask what format and choose video there as well. Call me if you have a question next time setting it up!
Hi I have a 98 Tahoe that I beat the living HE** out of on a daily basis having put 20k+ miles on it in the last year and a half, please please please put a new gearbox in it, I’ve done 3 remans from leaks and the most recent doesn’t leak but I have like 3-4 inches (I wish I was exaggerating) of play either direction. Just my 2 cents, subscribed just to see how much more you do with this thing!
Hey, I know this is an older video, but I have a '99 Tahoe that I'm currently "building" that looks similar to yours. My question is how in the heck do you get such good mpg's?! I get 11mpgs no matter how I drive it haha
I have a 98 two door. I’ve replaced all those steering parts…not with heavy duty stuff…but it’s made little difference. It’s torture, but I’d replace them part By part to see what makes the difference. Tie rods…then arm…then pitman…then idler…then steering box…then steering shaft/rag joint. My novice opinion…it’s not all of it. I think it’s between the steering shaft and steering box.
@@AutoEdits all good. Just sharing that I replaced all the components, over period of 4 weekends, including an alignment, and I can still steer my girl with my pinkie and it’s still Loose.
Another great video!
Glad you like them!
I bought a 99 tahoe a few months ago. Air doesn't work on mine neither. Would like to raise it a few inches, do steering components also.
The Kryptonite stuff is pricey but it's the last stuff you'll buy... sounded pretty good to me!
8:40 I felt that
LOL
Jason, you poor soul. Never been to Tahoe before? I was there for my B-day last week. Yeah, it's got that "rich people's play ground" stigma but year round outdoor activities, I love it up there. Glad you experienced Tahoe in a Tahoe.
HA! Yep totally seemed out of my league... I definitely want to get back for some trails and camping!
Blackwell's Corner, Hwy46 and Hwy33..
Good call on that location... I weirdly like it there.
@@AutoEdits it's in what I call "The Triad" of where I work.. ,3 Counties, Kern, Kings and San Luis Obispo counties.. You we're only a short drive from Park field Ca the earthquake capital of California...
Keep up the videos, I might have to make a video of my Tahoe.
You should!
My 99 tahoe was like that, gear box was so worn out it would wander from left to right. New gear box maybe pitman and idler should clear that up. Now my 99 suburban with 217k has a perfect gear box and goes straight as an arrow down the road.
Guess it's just in what they get put through... stuffing big dumb tires on doesn't help things at all...lol
@@AutoEdits Yea thats true, these trucks are still pretty stout though. Dont require as much as the newer ones do
I was waiting for you to say Junk in the Trunk.
You know me so well. I thought it a bunch and was trying to be a "grown up" lol
Power steering fluid is highly flammable. I would definitely fix that
Oh yeah... good point.
I wish I can visit America and just drive there for days. You lucky bas****!
I fully appreciate it... believe me!
Had a 99 and honestly it had its couple of bad points but it was by far one of my favorite vehicles I’ve ever owned and regret ever selling it ….. might have to get another
Ever considers doing a meetup when you do these trips for an hour or two?
Yes, I think about it and then think about how few people would come...lol
Nevermind, I just found it in your amazon link!
HA! Thanks so much for that!!! The little pump really did make easy work of dropping the pan.
Have you tested the locker in twisty canyon roads yet? would love to know how that goes
I have taken the truck up a DRY twisty canyon and it was totally fine. The thing I'm interested in finding out is how it does on a wet or icy canyon road... we'll see!
@@AutoEdits keen to hear your experience when you do it! Would make for a great video!
@@AutoEdits Boss, I’m curious to know how this goes as well!
Bed liner the hood and roof.
Nice video! How is Pinto?
Thanks, Pinto is doing pretty good. It's such a slow process but she seems to be building some strength back.
Let's cut to the chase 14bolt rear and a dana 60 straight axle with an ORU kit, old school leaf springs, and forty-inch tires.
I like how you think and all the parts you suggest but don't have the budget or time for that.
@@AutoEdits Do it on the cheap. used parts or a whole cheap doner beater. but i understand. maybe it would be do able in baby steps
Any plans to do anything to the tbi 350?
Sure, I'll hop it up in a bit but want to get the suspension sorted a bit first.
Nice
Thanks
18MPG 🎉🎉🎉 amazing my 98 K2500 suburban gets a solid 10mpg with 410 gears🥲
Wonder what the differences are?
That sounds like an awesome plan and a lot of work! This thing has 225K
18mpg? With 35s? I'm lucky to get 15 downhill on the freeway. I avg 13.5 in my 99.
Oddly enough... my last trip with 38 psi in the tires I got 13/14 mpg... next trip I'll drop it back down to 28 like I had it for this drive and see.
Great build series! Never thought I would be this into a Tahoe build, did you compensate for the 35’s speedo wise?
GPS to figure out MPG?
Thanks! I did use gps and actual math at the gas pumps to get 18.1 overall average. I did use one bottle of Lucas Oil "tune up in a bottle" Injector cleaner at each of the 3 fuel stops and honestly feel that stuff made a difference.
Impressive mileage 👍🏻
Did it have the 456 gears on this trip? Wondering the rpm at 60 mph.
It did and 60 is about 1900 rpm
Does that steering kit include an idler arm?
It does not... I just ordered a new idler and mount.
Good. In my experience with that generation truck, the idler usually wears Fastest. If you have an Astro van you can change them once a week. 😆
Someday I’m going to need a tutorial on how to do a time lapse on the go Pro.
Howdy and welcome! I've had a bunch of other stuff come up but I'm back on looking for a steering box this weekend!
You missed out! Should’ve said “throw some junk in the trunk” lol
I thought it for sure but was trying to be "mature" LOL Won't make that mistake again!
Hey, I know this is an older video, but I have a '99 Tahoe that I'm currently "building" that looks similar to yours. My question is how in the heck do you get such good mpg's?! I get 11mpgs no matter how I drive it haha
I have 4.56 gears and these tires do a good job on the highway if I keep my speeds under 70!
@@AutoEdits aaahhh I gotcha. Maybe I should consider tossing in new gears eventually. I wouldn't mind a True locking differential anyways ha
I have a 98 two door. I’ve replaced all those steering parts…not with heavy duty stuff…but it’s made little difference. It’s
torture, but I’d replace them part
By part to see what makes the difference. Tie rods…then arm…then pitman…then idler…then steering box…then steering shaft/rag joint. My novice opinion…it’s not all of it. I think it’s between the steering shaft and steering box.
Doing it part by part doesn't make sense to me. All new with upgraded parts is the best way for sure and a good alignment!
@@AutoEdits all good. Just sharing that I replaced all the components, over period of 4 weekends, including an alignment, and I can still steer my girl with my pinkie and it’s still
Loose. PS - that included the half-shafts, ball joints, and shocks. So was simply trying to share that if, at the end, you only have marginal improvements…how will you diagnose what to address. Love your truck, my truck, only issue I have is the loose steering. Look forward to hearing about your success, so I can follow suit!
hey auto edits,
did the guys mounting your tires to your 16” rims give you issues? i notice that the minimum is 7.5 diameter but i know our rims are a 7, ( i am looking into buying the same tires) thx
They didn't say anything and balanced them up to perfection.
Sweet Was it the 315 or the 35.
Sorry for so many ?s.
315
Re: Bird. That is a Robin.
Totally appreciate getting that info! They seemed to follow me a bit... was cool and kind a creepy lol
Are you gonna upgrade to a spider unit?
What do you mean?
@@AutoEdits Sorry the fuel injectors. They just call it the spider unit because it looks like a spider. There is an upgrade for those 5.7 engines.
@@jorgeub27 The thing runs great... I don't feel the need for that upgrade at this time but I like learning about these type of things. Here's a video that gives an example of how good this thing is... th-cam.com/video/VGXQCc4cC50/w-d-xo.html
@@AutoEdits Yeah I figured as much when you said it's giving you 18 miles to the gallon🤣, That's like a brand new engine
Well Jason looks like you need to work on the suspension 😂
So true!
Hahah road trip to my hometown, nasty lake Elsinore
Elsinore isn't that nasty, is it? My grandparents lived there for years so I loved visiting and watching the skydivers.
We call it boat steering & I thought only 90s Fords had them
LOL, even those still had buttery smooth power steering to help... this thing was rough.
I will without a doubt guarantee your tach isnt reading right, the temp gauge is pretty painful over 210 ouch.
The Salton Sea is the largest body of water in California (For now, but not for long...)
Oh yeah!
NEED A STREERING STABULIZER! ITLL KEEP THE STREEING WHEEL FROM BEING RIPED OUTTA YOUR HAND
Nah, does great without.
