God-Tier yes, few? No. Metal is a god tier genre. So many musician bands in the genre, so many inspiring God-tier artists. Very few "Alcoholica" bands today, instead you have dedicated insanely talented, hard working to the craft artists. Lots of them. So proud to be an open minded metal nerd!

I am sure others can comment their favorites, but that’s a good start imo.

I always say they are "psychedelic" band. You can dig up some really old footage of them on internet and you can clearly see they were into psychedelics a lot in their youth. To some it might be obvious from their lyrics. You can be a philosopher but some "revelations" are only accesible via experience.
No one else has ever come close to matching Meshuggah. They are so alien and unique sounding and often create these huge cosmic compositions that almost teeter into the realm of movie scores. Especially on their album Catch 33. Please do more Meshuggah! I'd love to see you react to their song "Dancers to a Discordant System"

They're almost entirely rhythm-focused and the solos are so ridiculously unique and weird sounding. When I first heard the guitar solo on their song "Clockworks", I didn't even know it was a guitar because I've never heard anything like it. Listen to the riffs on their song "Dancers to a Discordant System". I've never heard patterns and structures like that before. And in the middle of the song, they go into an insanely hypnotic trance-inducing section with a rhythmic pattern that feels both in 4/4 and out of 4/4. Everything they do is so unorthodox and no one comes close to matching them. By the way, my favorite bands ever are Meshuggah, TOOL, Opeth, and Porcupine Tree.

This is one of those top tier, could be the perfect song deals. I'm serious. I'm a Tool guy, but this might be the perfect song...loved these guys for years ..deserve so much more ..
Not at all true, though. For all their polyrhythm stuff, everybody always knows to bob their head to the 4/4 hi-hat+snare combo first and foremost. That's what's always made them so intriguing - they can cater to simpler metal fans while simultaneously offering this whole extra world of complexity and unpredictability on top of it for deeper fans. It's such an impossibly innovative concept.
Messhugga´s solos always remind me of Allan Holdsworth. More spaced out but disonant and beautifuly arranged. One song that shows that is Straws Pulled at Random. If you can check a live version of that song you wont regret it
You hear the Holdsworth influence much more, all before Catch33 and of course on "Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects". But for me; "Destroy Erase Improve" will be my fave, because that's what got me into them in the 1st 2 minutes of the album in 1995. But its VERY progressive in a more traditional sense than the albums after, maybe more clearer, and Fredrik would do traditional soloing, with that Holdsworth legato. Instead of the "Sirens of Peril" that he would do later for solos. I think Michael should checkout "Future Breed Machine" as well, for the earlier and different side of Meshuggah's past. I was a HUGE Holdsworth fan before discovering Meshuggah, so it was a great surprise to hear who inspired members of the band, and integrating it into their music.
Man I love how you dive into the underlying feelings instead of just focusing on the insane technical aspects. The feeling of being on huge ocean waves is so obvious after you moving with it
Amazing video Michael, been a fan of theirs for more than 20 years but they still have me in awe. The fact that they continue to evolve after all this time blows my mind, catch them live if you can. Along with their audio you also get their insane stage light tech for a complete assault of the senses, took me a couple of days to "land" after that xD.
Hi. I subbed to you quite a time back, I think, but with the zillions of vids out there, your channel got lost in the shuffle. I'm so glad I found my way back. You seem so happy and into it. You seem to really feel what you're listening to, and your body language flows with the music. I feel it too. While Bleed can already almost induce a trance-like state, watching you flow with it made the experience even more unifying. You've got a nifty channel.
You didn’t mention the “herta” drum rudiment that’s Thomas is playing with his feet… the really wild aspect of this song, for me, is how the drummer and guitarist are in perfect sync with that herta percussive pattern as it changes multiple times throughout the song!
Sitting here listening this to the first time I am now beginning to realize why all of my guitar major peers drifted towards playing mostly metal. Why cant we have more innovative, interesting rhythms like this in popular music? This groove was straight funky!
2 things: 1. heavy metal IS a type of pop music. And it's also very popular. 2. Different musical genres have specific approaches, and whilst the verse beat could be used in a funk song, the chorus progression would never fit anything but metal. Edm has very strict structural progressions, and I don't think you could work say a 5/4 beat into any of the sub genres until you start brushing up against breakcore or noise. Pop music if you can get an infectious vocal hook that rivals syphilis over the rythm it'll work, but it's been years since anyone even tried, because why bother? It's a disposable consumer product to sell to teenagers and bad nightclubs. Blues and jazz already play rythm. Hip hop, musically is just a backing rythm that has to repeat cyclicly for poetry to be presented over, the rythmic interest is in the vocals, not the music. Prog rock and metal, like jazz and blues are the genres where fucking with sense of time and rythm are the stylistic norm that defines them, that's where that impulse is satisfied in popular music (along with breakcore, noise and very rarely jazz n bass) Finally, math is fun and all, but occasionally 4/4 is a fucking pleasure. As hard as meshuggah go, some of their stuff is so dull (demiurge for example, plodding bland overrated song that it is). Most times I'd prefer Antichrist Siege Machine just to know I'm alive, despite it's primitive simplicity. People put too much stock in unnecessary complexity. It's why people either geek out over tech-death or just ignore it cos it's dull

What I love most about Meshuggah is that they (to me, at least) sound almost like EDM in their rhythm & melody (I’m fan of both metal & EDM)…
