  • Disused Railways - Tewkesbury railway station site, Gloucestershire UK. Tewkesbury once boasted two stations, one in town and one on this branch line to Malvern. The railway in town was used mainly to serve the flour mill and also to make a connection to the Severn. The this station was soon closed and today nothing remains of the old line save the odd plaque, whilst the out of town station continued, having been built to serve the ‘Tewkesbury and Malvern Railway’ in 1864. The surface of the sizeable car park remains and shows the extent of use suggesting a large passenger throughput.
Photographs suggest quite a large station complex that one would expect to yield some remains among the bushes and scrub. The truth on the ground reveals that in 50-60 years since it closed, Mother Nature has done a fine job of hiding the remains. It would be possible with the right equipment to excavate the foundation no doubt, but scraping a boot across the surface is a poor substitute. Diligence and patients paid off and a number of finds were unearthed, along with substantial remains of the signal box. Certainly enough to hazard a guess at the general layout of points Roding and signal cables. In all quite a satisfying visit.

Nothing left of the station - unfortunate. What a scramble at the beginning of the film. The signalbox base was a great find. Smashing film - thank you for your endeavours

i was so pleased to find your video, i trod the same path earlier this year in search of memories.
After the station was closed my Dad worked there for several years, for Tewkesbury Saw Service (mid sixties i am guessing) and i would spend a saturday morning there while he caught up with some work. it really amazes me how it has been claimed back by nature. Thanks

Great detail Ron. Such a pity that they demolished the station.. It looked a good build in the old photo. I wonder who gave the ok to rip it down. Luckily I've seen some other old stations in your walks that have become nice private homes James.

The land and buildings would have belonged to the rail company (BR?), I guess they didn't want the cost of maintenance so leveled the sites but kept the land as 'Money in the bank'. I would like to think they wouldn't do it today, but who knows. Ron

Great piece of detective work there Ron. How could anyone be so stupid as to knock that lovely building down?

Hi Lionel, I think the issue is that it is cheaper to knock it down than maintain it in safe condition, Plus it will be easier to sell as a cleared site if they choose to dispose of it. Take care. Ron

I would always be a bit careful when in that station. it's a bit of a junkie den, especially at night. brilliant video though, with many things that i never noticed whilst i was there.

Hi Chris I agree, it is in a prime spot for building, I can only think Network Rail are keeping it in the 'bank' Ron

Who does the video's on your walks, your often walking in front of the camera then when your pointing out points of interests. I'd stick my neck out and say it's your fair lady.

I'm not brave enough to let my wife have charge of the camera Norris, I use a 'selfie' stick. P.W.
