Man. Forget the video, that transition at the end of the intro from watching the lathe to switching to the camera?! Should be an item of study in TH-cam school!! I always look at the camera like an Idiot before I start talking... :)
How many coats did you end up using on that pen? Did you ever try a CA finish or do you prefer the softer shine of a wax finish?
Thank you for sharing Rob!!
Yuval.
Lol hi Yuval,
That's my modelling career over then.
I used 2 coats of Hampshire sheen high gloss, I'm sure you could use more, it gives a nice hard durable finish.
The first pen I ever made I used bees wax as a finish, it started out nice but got dull and tacky with use, I've also used ca as a finish, I like it but the fumes can be bad and it is not as easy to apply as Hampshire sheen.
So I think I will stick with HSHG for my pens in the future.
Take care man, practice your camera transitions in the bathroom mirror 😉
Rob
Already hard at work. The kids think their dad as gone mad, which they are completely right about! :)
Yuval.
hi Rob, I am a little confused, that hampshire sheen looked awfully like Yorkshire Grit, it is a totally different colour to my Hampshire sheen and a lot softer, think I'm losing the plot lol.lovely pen mate.
Brian,
as Hampshire sheen is hand blended, and this tin was blended in Canada with Canadian ingredients by me 😀, not Martin, there is bound to be subtle differences like colour or texture, but the resulting finish is designed to be the same.
Hope this clears up any confusion cross counties
Take care
Rob
+Woodslee Summercraft never doubted you Rob, just an observation.
Oh and thank for watching and I'm glad you like the pen 😀
Questions for clarification:
1. Wax before oil, or oil before wax?
2. How does it hold up with use?
Hi Louis
I always apply oils before wax, this allows the oils to bring out the natural lustre of the wood, and Hampshire sheen high gloss is a very durable finish.
Hope this helps
Take care
Rob
