Very useful summary but I received a more disturbing definition of VLOS for my C0 M4P from the CAA. They told me that while a fleeting glance at my RC screen to check instrumentation was allowed, I could not pilot my drone even for a short distance via the RC screen without enlisting the help of a co-pilot/observer.

Hi there thanks for the information. Airspace control areas seem to be everywhere is it possible to fly in these up to 120 meters with a drone as most are flight paths by the looks of it they are in a white boarder on the app.
Great video, thank you. If flying a sub 250g drone, taking off and landing from a safe public space - are you allowed to fly over private property/land even if the private property/land has "no drone flying" signs on their land - obviously, not flying within a NFZ or NOTAM area. The drone code point 8 says you have to follow signage? Does that mean everyone can just put up a sign to prevent drone users?
Hey Martin! The Drone Code is an excellent form of guidance. But it is just that, guidance. The legislation is often a little different. Overall, the quick answer is you are fine to fly over private land, even if they do not want you there, unless there is a specific restriction or legislation to stop you. The longer answer… In England and Wales, any landowner can stop activity on their land. So if I did not want you operating a drone ‘from’ the land, I have the right to ask you to stop etc. This is usually, depending on how you respond, a civil matter and not related to CAA rules. It is important to check if the sign is backed up by a bylaw or specific legislation. If it is, the sign should have this noted in the corner in small text, this is a good way to see if the sign is just a home print job! You can fly over private land but should be aware that recovering the drone might be more difficult if you are already aware the landowner does not want you there. Being REALLY pedantic, it could be argued that flying somewhere you know you are not wanted COULD be a safety issue. I produced a video as a guide in terms of council powers over drone flight and take off permissions came up a few times. It also features input from a Barrister, (I am not legally qualified), so it could help you: th-cam.com/video/BLIh67wg1wg/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps. Throw me an email if I have got the wrong end of the stick - sean@geeksvana.com.
I have a a flyer ID for my mini 2 I recently bought a mini 3 can you advice if I should get a operator ID again or will the first one I did cover me. Great video
jeez.. sooooo much better than australias rules. :( im coming to uk from australia, do i need to register my drone with your uk authority? fantastic, clear concise video btw!
Wiser rules in UK..Here in Finland you have to register if:The weight is over 250..OR if it has a camera?????Can't understand what a camera has to do with safety...
Thanks for the video, I decided to take the flyer ID test even though I fly the DJI mini 2 because it was really useful to know what the regulations are and it is free
Not in the UK. You only need commercial insurance if the work is contracted. For example, I ask you to survey my roof. For your own TH-cam channel no commercial insurance is required. Hope this helps.
@@Geeksvana mate that is perfect I've just ordered it from dji let's hope it adds that bit more to the channel. Even if it don't it should be a fun bit of kit 👌

Interesting that one of the first shots is of Stonehenge as that falls within the Larkhill Danger Area and also drones are not allowed to be operated there by English Heritage. I only know as I was hired to do some drone work there last year and the admin was pretty intense!
It depends which side of Stonehenge you approach from. There is a great approach that does not infringe on Larkhill. Also English Heritage do not have control over the airspace. Obviously the approach would be slightly different if carrying out a commercial operation but this explainer is for hobbyists.
btw, I just got the email that a Mini 3 will be arriving here tomorrow! I'm so excited to finally be able to fly over my house, and thats from somebody who flys commercially and owns multiple drones lol :)
@@Geeksvana Totally, I actually think it makes a lot of sense basing the rules on drone weight and welcomed the new regs however I do think the current sub 250 regs could be at risk if abused. It would be a shame to lose that ability not through safety concerns but because of annoyance :(
Hey! You will need to gain an Operator ID and pass the Flyer ID test on the UK CAA site. Then you can fly the Phantom 4 in the A3 airspace. So, 150m from congested areas or uninvolved people. Perfect for Cornish countryside. Anything else would require a certificate.
Thanks Alistair! If you are flying commercially with the Mini 3 without GVC etc, then the only added thing you need is commercial insurance. Hope this helps.
Hey Sam! Yes. Same rules if the drone flight is in the Open category. You just need to have commercial drone insurance in place, which is EC785/2004. Most commercial policies are compliant from companies like Coverdrone.
Great video as always Sean. Is there anywhere you can download a short list of the main rules so I can keep them to hand if approached by a member of the public or authority?
I’ve found that everywhere I look, the page talks about 25kg drones, 500g too. And then 249g. This is annoying because you can’t share that with people, as they’ll talk in a ‘general’ sense rather than specifically regarding
It actually says if it’s under 250 grams with a camera you need a flyer ID. Maybe it’s changed since recording of this video. Edit: my mistake and corrected
@@Geeksvana just checked and my mistake ! I must’ve misread that a few days ago and then went and got a flyer ID 😂 at least my mistake and now I’m a little bit more educated on drones 😂
I’m glad I’ve taken it and it does give you better knowledge and understanding. Your videos have been fantastic as a new beginner gaining knowledge through them as well. It’s good to have the flyer ID card to at least show you know something. You should create your own flyer ID the fountain of knowledge for the sub 250 class of drones 😂
thank you soooooo much for making this for the UK rules - btw, a 'crowd' according to the rules is more than 1000 people. so things like concerts etc. what about FRZs? i use UAV drone assist and where i wanted to fly is right in the middle of an FRZ - is this a complete no go?
Hey Zombie! Thanks for the kind feedback. The definition of group for overflight is no longer a number but instead a group of people who cannot move out of the way quickly. That could be a few people having a picnic etc. To fly in an FRZ, you will need to apply for permission from the airport or organisation who control it. Certainly flight inside without are a complete no go without it. Hope this helps.
@@Geeksvana thank you that helps a lot, i do have one more question, say i go and fly the drone with my dad, is he able to fly it? would he need an operator id or flyer id? or can i be next to him and he can just take control and fly too
Hi Thank you for information 😁 Do you know what happened if you broke the rules? And what about the places where drones are not allowed? What about drones under 250?
They need to hurry up and allow other apps on the RC so that we can put drone assist and UAV forecast on it UAV has a problem apparently they have updated to include the BeiDou satellites and it works on android and on the website but Apple have not used any of the dates that he sent to them so if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad you do not get the BeiDou satellites option
Hi, You specifically mention "as a hobbyist". Other than a requirement for insurance is there anything different for undertaking a commercial flight? I thought that when the rules had changed this distinction was removed?
Hey! Yes, flights are on a risk basis these days although it does depend on the type of flight with which drone. Larger drones will require a GVC and an Operational Authorisation from the CAA. There are also issues in terms of take off permission which are required for commercial operations. So, to keep things simple I decided to stress that this video covers only hobbyist/recreational flights.
I just sent mine up, just got it, first ever drone. Was quite disconcerting to be honest how quickly I could make it shoot off and it quickly gets to the stage where it’s almost out of view. I put my unboxing and first flight on my channel.
Any ideas how things work on Dartmoor? The DNPA website says it's not allowed, but as far as I'm aware they have no jurisdiction of the airspace. So my understanding is that it is not allowed to RELEASE a drone there but it is allowed to fly one as long as you release it off of common land.
There are (quite old) bylaws in place for Dartmoor which ban 'model aircraft' from being launched or flown over the park without permission. As I undertand it this does include drones, however they appear to accept that this is ambiguous so they are currently trying to update the bylaws to refer to drones specifically.
I live in Denmark and have taken the European A1/A3 licenses (which seems to be the same as what you refer to). And yes, I have my pilot number printed on the M3P including contact information. And an insurance covering up to 1.000.000 Euros. So do I need to take the same license if I go and visit UK or does my European license cover it?
Hey Ole! You will unfortunately need to go through the process again here in the UK. Although the systems are currently similar, they are separate. For the Mavic 3, you will need an Operator and Flyer ID. Although for the Mini 3 Pro, you only need the Operator ID. Hope this helps.
Hi I am from Germany and will get a Mini 3 Pro soon. Shortly after I get it I will be on a holiday on Jersey island. Will there be the rules just as explained here for the UK?
Many thx Sean for your insightful comments much appreciated. Just a question, I’ve joined FPVUK and have their public liability ins. would I be covered to take pictures of a roof with the owners permission, for a friend of mine who wants to clean his customers roof? I would be using Mavic mini 3 pro. -Ken
Thanks Sean, but no M3P for me. I am not sending and more cash to dji - see other vid on range restictions in the UK. However, you mentioned LOS and the follow mode that your drone may have. What is the situation re LOS when using Litchi Follow mode on my Mini 2?THe M2 doesnt have FM mode so the rule isnt met?
Hey Roy! Great to see you. The Mini 2 is a great drone and not sure I would upgrade either. The LOS follow me mode exception can be used on any drone upto 50 metres of you. Otherwise normal rules apply. Hope this helps.
So if I understand correctly, I can basically fly the Mini 3 Pro in cities over people (not dense crowds) and close to buildings etc provided I am being very careful and not flying recklessly? All of the 50m away from property etc isn't relevant?
excellent advice Sean as usual I wonder if we can get liability insurance for a small drone just incase it does harm someone's property or person ill have to look in to that. Well it's been confirmed my mini 3 has been dispatched so looking forward to this. are you getting the mini 3 my friend. 😁👌🇬🇧
I’m completely new to drones and can’t wait to get started. My mini 3 pro is in order from DJI. I was getting a bit confused as to what I had to read or register for but this explained perfectly. Thank you 👍
I live near Stanstead airport, is there any restrictions for theses areas or is there somewhere I can find out? Great video for the novice like me, that’s if my mini 3 ever arrives 🙈.
Great informative video but I have a question if I may... I've just purchased a Mavic Mini as my first drone and I've obtained the Flyer & Operator ID for myself. My question is this.. Does my girlfriend (who is over 18) need to aquire a Flyer ID to fly my drone, or can she fly it without as long as I'm present when she flies it?
Hey Jules! Thanks for the kind feedback. As you do not require a Flyer ID for sub 250g, your girlfriend does not need one. You remain responsible for the drone under your Operator ID. Hope this helps.
Hey! At events and sensitive locations tracking technology will show a precise path of flight. Often issues will only be looked into if there is a problem or incident which would involve the flight data of the drone either from the device or via the manufacturer.
Hello Sean Ive been watching Geeksvana videos. extremely informative. What's been your experience with flying in central London particularly in areas like Tower Bridge/The Thames? Have you run into the law, have they forced you away? Are places like Buckingham Palace (not over the building) allowed to be filmed?
Those areas all have airspace restrictions around them anyway. As does then entire City of London. I was scratching my head watching the footage in this video because it looks inside R158 (which does extend past the south bank of the Thames opposite the City) - but it's sometimes hard to tell with drone footage and there is a small gap between 158 and 157. Flying in R158 is a big nono, ditto R157, then south of that you have the London Heliport (and you have City Airport to the east making things worse) - so yeah, huge swath of London is unflyable without permission specifically from NATS; you can do it, they have a website for it and that may be the case for the footage in this video and that just shows how fraught things like this can be.

The longer answer…
In England and Wales, any landowner can stop activity on their land.
It also features input from a Barrister, (I am not legally qualified), so it could help you:

Hope this helps. Throw me an email if I have got the wrong end of the stick - sean@geeksvana.com.
I have a a flyer ID for my mini 2 I recently bought a mini 3 can you advice if I should get a operator ID again or will the first one I did cover me. Great video
Thanks for the kind feedback! The same Operator ID covers all the drones you own, just need to renew it once a year 😎.
jeez.. sooooo much better than australias rules. :( im coming to uk from australia, do i need to register my drone with your uk authority? fantastic, clear concise video btw!
Excellent summary and really useful recap of points.
Well put over suan, keep up the good work
Hey Martin! Hope you are well. Thank you!
great vid will take note of this from time to time cheers
Hey Thebagfather46! Thank you! Really pleased it was useful.
Well put together and very interesting all drone flyers new and old should watch this TH-cam channel and this particular link.
Wiser rules in UK..Here in Finland you have to register if:The weight is over 250..OR if it has a camera?????Can't understand what a camera has to do with safety...
Can we fly over national park? Like Peak district or lake district?
Thanks for the video,
I decided to take the flyer ID test even though I fly the DJI mini 2 because it was really useful to know what the regulations are and it is free
Hey William! Thanks for sharing your experience. I think it is a really useful thing to do. Also shows others you have the knowledge!
A very helpful instructional video. Thank you.
Informative, helpful & well presented - thanks for your advice
Droneassist shows MOD test zones but doesn't tell you whether they're activated or not you still have to check the NOTAMs to see if you can fly.
Any similar video for Air 2s and flying laws?
Do we need insurance on a mini 3 for business use ie youtube footage as its monetised?
Not in the UK. You only need commercial insurance if the work is contracted. For example, I ask you to survey my roof. For your own TH-cam channel no commercial insurance is required. Hope this helps.
@@Geeksvana mate that is perfect I've just ordered it from dji let's hope it adds that bit more to the channel. Even if it don't it should be a fun bit of kit 👌
Spot on info as always...nice one Sean !!
It’s always good to return to basics and refresh > thank you
Thank you James! Really appreciate your kind support!
hi there just asking if you have any video of drone bigger then 2kg as i got given a dji inspire 2 as my friend just upgraded to the dji inspire 3 and as this is a 3 to 4kg drone i dont know much about were to fly this as i had a few drone like the dji mini 2 and the dji marvarc pro and the rule a difftent for this type of drones since i last fly one in this class as i see lot of video on sub 250g drone but not many on drone over 2kg to 4 kg as there a not a relly many people fly drone other then profacion flying them from what people nomaly fly around i know is is a bit of a diffent subject but as i see at this moment there alot lot of people looking into buy these drone as there getting cheaper on the used market now
Thanks for such a great video. I am thinking of getting a DJI Mini Pro 3. I was wondering what all the rules were. This is a great video for beginners
@@Geeksvana Maybe, but it struck me that it was worth mentioning given the context of the video and being respectful to land owners etc.
btw, I just got the email that a Mini 3 will be arriving here tomorrow! I'm so excited to finally be able to fly over my house, and thats from somebody who flys commercially and owns multiple drones lol :)
It is such a liberating feeling to fly these little drones under the current rules. Let's hope they don't change! 😬
@@Geeksvana Totally, I actually think it makes a lot of sense basing the rules on drone weight and welcomed the new regs however I do think the current sub 250 regs could be at risk if abused. It would be a shame to lose that ability not through safety concerns but because of annoyance :(
Im traveling over to England in a week can I bring my phantom 4 drone so I can fly and film in Cornwall? let me know asap bud. Thanks
Hey! You will need to gain an Operator ID and pass the Flyer ID test on the UK CAA site. Then you can fly the Phantom 4 in the A3 airspace. So, 150m from congested areas or uninvolved people. Perfect for Cornish countryside. Anything else would require a certificate.
@@Geeksvana hey can you send me the appropriate links so i can get what i need. Thanks bud
Very clear and useful info. What is the difference if you are flying commercially?
Thanks Alistair! If you are flying commercially with the Mini 3 without GVC etc, then the only added thing you need is commercial insurance. Hope this helps.
Excellent! I just came to ask the same question. I thought that the only difference was the insurance but good to have that confirmed again. Thanks!
What about flying in central London? Like over the Thames? I thought drones are totally banned? Also in the royal parks?
Do these restrictions differ if the drone is being used for commercial flying IE, Filming Businesses etc? Thanks
Hey Sam! Yes. Same rules if the drone flight is in the Open category. You just need to have commercial drone insurance in place, which is EC785/2004. Most commercial policies are compliant from companies like Coverdrone.
@@Geeksvana Really appreciate your guidance on this! Really informative! Thanks again.
Thank u I didn’t know I need an operator id
Great video as always Sean. Is there anywhere you can download a short list of the main rules so I can keep them to hand if approached by a member of the public or authority?
I’ve found that everywhere I look, the page talks about 25kg drones, 500g too. And then 249g.
This is annoying because you can’t share that with people, as they’ll talk in a ‘general’ sense rather than specifically regarding
Can you do a rules and regulations for Australian sub 250 Drone. There is not enough data out there and CASA really dose not make it clear.
It actually says if it’s under 250 grams with a camera you need a flyer ID. Maybe it’s changed since recording of this video.
Edit: my mistake and corrected
Hey! You only need the Operator ID for sub 250g with a camera, not the Flyer ID.
@@Geeksvana just checked and my mistake ! I must’ve misread that a few days ago and then went and got a flyer ID 😂 at least my mistake and now I’m a little bit more educated on drones 😂
To be fair, I think the Flyer ID should be included and as you say it doesn't hurt to know etc.
@@Geeksvana thank you that helps a lot, i do have one more question, say i go and fly the drone with my dad, is he able to fly it? would he need an operator id or flyer id? or can i be next to him and he can just take control and fly too
Hi
Thank you for information 😁
Do you know what happened if you broke the rules? And what about the places where drones are not allowed? What about drones under 250?
They need to hurry up and allow other apps on the RC so that we can put drone assist and UAV forecast on it UAV has a problem apparently they have updated to include the BeiDou satellites and it works on android and on the website but Apple have not used any of the dates that he sent to them so if you’re using an iPhone or an iPad you do not get the BeiDou satellites option
I think that would be a great idea Mark. Being able to check the apps from the RC seems sensible!
@@Geeksvana thanks for the quick reply. What is the score on take off permission?
Great information thank you!!
so at take off and drone is in hover does that mean you can fit nd filters if it takes it just over 250 grams?
Hi
I am from Germany and will get a Mini 3 Pro soon. Shortly after I get it I will be on a holiday on Jersey island. Will there be the rules just as explained here for the UK?
Does visual line of sight permit the use of binoculars?
Hey! No. You can only use your eyes.
@@Geeksvana many thanks for the update. Presumably the weight of one ND filter takes the weight to 150g or over?

Many thx Sean for your insightful comments much appreciated. Just a question, I’ve joined FPVUK and have their public liability ins. would I be covered to take pictures of a roof with the owners permission, for a friend of mine who wants to clean his customers roof? I would be using Mavic mini 3 pro. -Ken
Good information Sean
Thank you Lyn! Really great to see you. Hope you are well.
@@Geeksvana with the greatest of respect, I think you no answer my question
@@box.10 I answered... LOS is the same for every drone. The 50m follow me mode can be used on any drone. That's it.
Thank you 👍
Been flying for years. Just don't do anything dangerous or pester people and you'll be fine. These regulations are a load of shit really.
but if I get myself into trouble, will saying sorry work, like it did for boris?
I believe the Boris defence appears to work well for certain people...
@@Geeksvana 'for certain people' is not how the law should really work 😁
I live near Stanstead airport, is there any restrictions for theses areas or is there somewhere I can find out? Great video for the novice like me, that’s if my mini 3 ever arrives 🙈.
Great video! Can drones that weigh less than 250 grams be flown in the UK at night?
Great informative video but I have a question if I may... I've just purchased a Mavic Mini as my first drone and I've obtained the Flyer & Operator ID for myself.
My question is this.. Does my girlfriend (who is over 18) need to aquire a Flyer ID to fly my drone, or can she fly it without as long as I'm present when she flies it?
Hey Jules! Thanks for the kind feedback. As you do not require a Flyer ID for sub 250g, your girlfriend does not need one. You remain responsible for the drone under your Operator ID. Hope this helps.
@@Geeksvana Thanks for the reply Sean. Seems like a very complex area to a beginner. Appreciate your quick response! 👍🏻
How do “they” determine if you’re flying over a crowd and not a few metres to the side?
Hey! At events and sensitive locations tracking technology will show a precise path of flight. Often issues will only be looked into if there is a problem or incident which would involve the flight data of the drone either from the device or via the manufacturer.
Super helpful vid! thanks man
great video Sean with lots of important information
Is this certificate valid in Schengen countries as well?
How is this for people that visit the UK from other country’s?
Do they need to do thinks before they start flying there sub 250 gram drone ?
Is it okay to use this drone for commercial reasons? Recording ads for example?
Hello Sean Ive been watching Geeksvana videos. extremely informative. I need to ask a question at long last I have my 1st Drone DJI Mini 3 pro, also now have my operator ID and also my Flyer ID, however getting confusing reports via various searches on flying my drone in Menorca Spain next year. if anyone can answer this question I'm sure you can. Do I need to register my mini 3 Pro with Spain authority's if so could you guide me to the right place. many thanks.
Thanks for the kind feedback David. Here is a link to a short video I made explaining what you need to fly drones in the EU, hope it helps: th-cam.com/video/UIyBTqrhi-U/w-d-xo.html&t. Let me know if it leaves you with any questions.
On first glance there are no differences between the European Drone Rules (legislation 2019/947) and the UK-rules, even after BRexit. Is this correct?
Excellent overview thank you.
Thank you! Really appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Appreciate this informative content! For all of us who waited this long for the Mini 3, let us all enjoy by flying safely and responsibly.
Great video as always 👍
Thank you Drone Travel UK! Hope you are well.
I am coming to Britain for the purpose of tourism for a week and I would like to use the drone
In my country, I have a permit from the Civil Aviation Authority
what to do ? my drone ( DJI Air 2s )

Well i wouldnt worry about flying to far beyond line of sight it will only go few hundred metres anyway
