  • With 2 million videos, and 247 thousand creators, Mukbang eating videos are a South Korean phenomenon that has gone global.
Ordinary people film themselves slurping, chewing, inhaling - often vast amounts of food. And hundreds of millions tune in. But while politicians praise Mukbang in India, and government agencies support Mukbang videos in South Korea, China banned Mukbang videos in 2021.
Just why have such seemingly innocuous eating videos gotten politicians involved?

Mukbangs started off as a way for lonely people to connect and share a meal with someone. It's not disgusting or degenerate to watch mukbangs, and people here are really missing the point. It's just sad what it has become today considering how it started.

That actually sounds really nice to eat with someone.
I can see eating a good meal while filming.
I personally tend to eat one big meal a day rather than every few hours. So it could be their main meal & include a lot more variety but in smaller quantities so they're not overeating a ton.
But just eating & eating & eating it's kind of crazy.
Although admittedly I do enjoy a nice big meal occasionally. Usually at a buffet. But I don't truly over eat too much & it's rare anyway. Then I don't really eat anything for a day.

mukbangs helped me through a really hard time. my whole life i've been struggling with emetophobia which made me have chronic fears of food poisoning. sometimes i would go a full day without eating just to avoid potentially eating something bad and getting sick. this created an unhealthy relationship with food and an eating disorder. seeing other people enjoy food and being fine after eating it made me develop love for food again and minimize my fear of eating. i'm thankful to mukbangs.

i've known about mukbang since at least 2014 by complete accident but the thing is it was just random women, usually cute girls, eating casually while chatting with a bunch of lonely people who didn't have anyone to socialize with while they ate, and has since corrupted into this insane food eating competition. If you're livestreaming and just eating regular food like you would any other day and chatting with an audience, you are technically doing mukbang. I hate what it's become. I'm not interested in seeing people gorge themselves on massive quantities of food, I avoid food competitions for that sole reason.

      Absolutely agree with your opinion.
In my hometown, Seoul, there are a significant number of people who are in their challenge with mental illness, which is actually not yet diagnosed and treated.
As far as suicidal rate is concerned, South Korea is one of the top countries of that.
For protecting your mental health, I recommend that everyone avoid the cultural asset of Korea such as mukbang(먹방), K-drama and lyrics of K-pop.
Those are totally outputs of insane nature and, certainly, Korea is an extremely huge funny farm regardless of whether it’s North or South. 😅

@Din din Midun If you want to see a gigantic waste of food look no further than your nearest grocery store and see how much unpurchased, perfectly fine goods are literally thrown away.

I used to watch Mukbang videos and realized that it had a psychological impact on me, so I began consuming junk food more often. After I started watching, I discover that whenever I'm shopping or in a restaurant, the idea, image, or thought of grabbing the junk food is the first thing that comes to mind. I don't have a sweet tooth and don't often consume any kind of sweets, but I've noticed that when I'm in a bakery, I don't hesitate to get some just by imagining those Mukbangers who eat cakes, cookies, or chocolate bars greedily.

Been watching mukbang for years. But I mainly follow those mukbangers that eat reasonable amounts of food (eg. sas asmr, minee eats). The videos actually help me eat and the asmr sounds like non-excessive slurping and chewing puts me to sleep sometimes. I’ve also learnt a lot about other culture’s food and am more opened to try various types of food.
I get why some people find it weird and there’s cons to these types of vids but at the same time it has been helping a lot of us who have been suffering with eating disorders and insomnia.

Mukbang weren’t originally so competitive or extreme or global. It’s not sad or pathetic but people worked different hours of work & lived alone. Since they couldn’t have a meal with family or someone to share with. They connected with the mukbang content creators cause it fills the void, to eat your own meal, & see they enjoy a meal as well. As if you’re there with them. There’s different kinds of mukbang, some will talk, and some won’t talk, regardless South Korean mukbang content creators are usually respectful, & clean eaters.
Then the trend picked up globally, Chinese mukbangs were extreme, unhealthy, dangerous, copious amounts of food they cannot finish. Americans, Hispanic countries, Europeans, other Southeast & Asian countries ate voraciously & just ate out of pure gluttony & greed & clout. Sure they have enjoyed the food (a bit too much) but to the point, it became an unhealthy mentality & career, and it doesn’t feel the same in terms of the original reason & concept. Personally, South Koreans mukbang pull it off better, (with a grain of salt) I can’t stand anyone else like that. But to each & their own.

I just worry about the impact on extreme mukbanger's health both mentally and physically. It's encouraging binge eating disorders. The original concept was sweet, if you didn't have someone to eat with you could eat while watching a mukbang and feel less lonely. In Korean culture people generally don't eat by themselves in a restaurant and meals are usually meant for a group. Eating is such a huge part in the SK culture and it's inextricably linked with socialising whether with griends family or colleagues so eating alone has more of a stigma attached to it

When it started, the intention was good, mukbang live-streamers chatting online at dinner time with people feeling lonely, working late hours, and having no one to talk to, then it came the ASMR videos (this one kinda ok), and look at how much foods I can eat type of videos ruining everything.

I think some will purge if they do it daily. But the female Indian mukbanger only do mukbang twice a day. If she fast on days she doesn't eat, there's no need to purge the food. Also she looks hefty unlike Korean mukbanger, I bet she doesn't do that.

I'm, not sure if the docu just missed it, but mukbang isn't really just an asian phenomenon, nor only started in asia. If you guys remember early days of EpicMealTime and their (mis-)adventures, it is eerily similar to the newer spawns of these food shows genre. Even Man vs Food, which started pre-2010, can already be considered "gluttony on screen". Mukbang rose because micro-vlogging took the stage and they wanted to ride on the *viral* aspect of the segment's predecessors.

the mukbanger's name is clearly Kim Aejeong. She introduces herself as Aejeong, why does the narrator insist on referring to her as Jeong Ae the whole video and even recite it completely backwards, calling her Jeong Ae Kim? I can understand putting the family name behind so as to not confuse non-asian viewers, but isn't it rather disrespectful to get someone's first name backwards the entire video? Surely you don't need to know the language to get the order of the words in a name correct?

But mukbang videos dont effect my diet and does not influence me in any way. I love watching them coz I myslef dont or can't consume most things they eat. So when I watch them I get a sense of satisfaction Is all. I dont go out and starts craving for junk food. My guess is, u have to know urself where ur strength lies.
