We had a rottie, called her our door dog, intimidating when you see her at the door. She was secretly the biggest marshmallow of love. She served and protected our family for 12 years. I was blessed to have shared her life.

had a few rotties. great for scaring people off however me knowing the dog being a big softie took me by surprise the first time it did anything remotely guard dog like, my mother was out walking him and got jumpscared since it was dark and she couldn't see the guy that was for some reason trimming his hedge without any light at all late autumn evening (the dog knew he was there but since my mother hadn't reacted st all he simply continued on with his walk) the guy stood up when she walked past and said hello to which she ofc jumped a bit at, and boom the dog immediately turned a switch, barking and growling y'know general back the fuck up noises (no pulling on the leash tho, just reposition to stsnd between her and the stranger) quieted down to just low growling at the command and backed up a bit to stand beside her instead while they had a slight laugh about it all (she knew the guy although the dog hadn't met him before) very understandable about the whole thing. we had a sigh of relief that we actually took the time to train the dog to obey commands even when it quite understandable had pretty strong instincts telling it to rip'n'tear his throat. didn't really have any other events with those types of breed other than that. they mostly just growled at people first time visiting which they immediately stopped if told and reverted back to overgrown lapdog

oh and ye, the big scary rottie was terrified of the old grandma Boston terrier we had. was quite funny seeing the cranky ol hag just having to give the rottie a look to make him run off or play dead (she got a temper as she grew older, still great with people just less tolerant of younger dogs acting wild and absolutely saw it as her job to tell em hoe they should act)

also, anytime I had a strange man in the house (to do work or even new friends) she put herself at all times between me and the "stranger".

I paid $5000.00 for a guard dog for my business at night. I drove 15 hrs to Miami for this dog. A mastiff. He only guarded the food bowl. I kept him for my granddaughter. I went to the local animal shelter and told them I wanted a dog to guard my business. I adopted a mix breed mutt. No break-ins in over a year! I did find a pair of shorts on the top of the fence! LoL 😂 bust dog I even had! He stays inside the business during the day and greets all my customers!! Everyone loves Ivan the terrible! LoL. But when we lock up and the lights go off. He is hell!!!

Danes don’t mess around. I remember coming home from work one day when we were dogsitting one one time, and one of my wife’s friends had been over with her small child. I had just walked in the house, I don’t know why or how long but it was just the dog and the kid in the main room at the moment and this dog that wasn’t expecting anybody lunged in between me and the kid when she heard me and just started barking as loud as she could. It had me on the backfoot in my own house 😂. She calmed down after I said her name and she got a sniff of me, but wow.

Have a Newfoundland/Bernies Mt. Dog mix here! Our boy is named Teddy and he is the most gentle and sweet dog I have ever owned. These two breeds together make such a wonderful mix with an laid back temperament and easier to manage coat while keeping the size of the Newfoundland. Let me tell you when you play chase with a dog that's nearing 180lb that is the most intimidating thing. They can pick up speed fast and when he is barreling across the yard it is amazing. And such a deep bark too, we never are worried about any unwanted intruders.

Rottweilers by far were the best breed I have had the pleasure of keeping. They don't react like other breeds they first assess the situation. Our male once went through a window in the house because someone was trying to steal gas out of our vehicle. The thief left his equipment and our Caesar never left our property. She has surprised me in every way - better protection instincts than some of my dobes, loads of intelligence and drive, but lower maintenance overall to own. The breed has definitely won me over. I’m now getting spanish mastiffs as livestock guardian dogs for my farm. I’ll definitely be doing to puppy course with them. It’s been unbelievably helpful with my EM puppy.

My first guard dog was a Pit bull Pyrenees mix. She was a beautiful dog. She was super sweet. I knew if a kid stopped me and asked if they could pet her she would sit and let them. Kids would pull on her hair and I would stop them but all she did was sit there and wag her tail. I took her on a walk and the neighbor kid joined me and I let them hold her leash and she didn’t pull, she listened to them, and she was on her best behavior. She loved cuddles, and walks. She was a good guard dog though. Someone was following me one day and she stood behind me and if I slowed down (this was before I realized I was being followed) she gave my bum a shove. She normally walked on my left side, so when she was behind me I new something was up. I turned to see her and caught a glance of a person. They got closer and my dog started barking and growling and standing in her hind legs like a bear. The person ran in the other direction and she went back to walking on my left side, but her ears were up and her head was constantly moving. We went straight home.

Honestly, we have a mongrel dog. A few days ago, we went out and left her at home, in the back yard. When we came back, there was a bloodshed. Truly! It turned out a burgler tried to break in and our wonderful dog kept him from doing it. He left, but man was he hurt! Don't even know how he survived. Our dog is an 11 year old with the looks and energy of a 4 year old. She's got the strong body of a pittbull, but her head is not as wide. She's not aggressive at all, she's so sweet, but hell is she strong and protective!!!!

As a trainer, I once worked with a family with a Rottweiler. He was a great dog! The family said they wanted him to be "mean". I told them "NO!" They would want him to be friendly and calm around them and their friends/family. I assured them that his protective instincts would kick in when he sensed danger. And, also, that intimidation factor. One look at a Rottie, especially one that's barking at you, and no one will want to mess with him.

… my English lab try’s to be a guard dog. She is very sociable and loves people. I take her out anywhere I can take her in public and she never has the sort of response she does at home. When she hears someone pull in the driveway, the slamming of a car door or even someone walking up the steps and I’ll bring the screen door she lets out a really loud bark/howl and let out the scariest barks she can muster (not much coming from a lab but she try’s vs her normal bark). When whoever is at the house comes inside, she’ll continuously bark at them however when they come towards her if she does run away. More proof that she’s all bark no bite. And I do have guests give her food and encourage them to throw a ball for her and after maybe two minutes of socializing with her and showing her that they’re OK and not trying to harm me she comes down and she’ll even roll over for them for them to scratch her belly. We’ve had several family gatherings at my home, and even people she’s met a couple times before if she still does this procedure with them. I find it cute how she loves people, and will take affection without hesitation from them out in public but when someone comes to the house, she puts on the tough act.

My stepdad had a pitbull named Chester. Chester was the best guard dog in the world and the sweetest boy ever. When his daughter Aliyah was born, Chester never left her side, and let no one suspicious anywhere near her, not even her dirty ass mom. He slept by her bed, he played with her when she was up, he sat and watched when she was fed. And if anyone he didn’t know came near the house, that dude was in the yard either staring them down or chasing them off. He was actually born a day or so before me and lived to be 17 before passing away January of 2018. I was blessed to know him for as long as I did and will cherish my memories forever. I 100 percent agree that size is more important than anything for almost all guard dog needs and is probably the best way to get a deterrent without it being a very intimidating dog to people who don’t want to hurt you, an English mastiff would no doubt be more accepted at dog parks and groomers not only because there’s less discrimination but also I imagine an excited E M pulling on a walk looks a lot less angry than an excited Rottweiler or whatever

My family used to have a yellow lab. He was absolutely huge, and he had a really loud, deep bark. Because of that he was a bit intimidating to strangers. He was actually just a gentle giant. He was great with kids, especially me and my little sister, super patient, very obedient, and very fluffy. All in all he was a great dog, although he did shed a LOT. I always felt safe when he was around though because no burglar or criminal would want to hang around once they saw him.
