- Ethiopian Airlines signs US$6 billion deal for mega airport, Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, currently the airline’s hub, has a maximum capacity of 25 million passengers a year. The new hub will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year once completed in five years. Ethiopian Airlines had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Dubai-based consulting company Dar to develop the design for the airport.

We shouldn't forget that Ethiopian Airlines will save millions of dollars every year by avoiding refuel stops en route to their North America long-haul flights. The new airport in Bushoftu is not going to have takeoff weight limitations like the high altitude Addis Ababa Bole Airport. Flights to the US will be direct flights from Bushoftu without the necessity to make a refuel stop in Rome. The airport will pay for itself in the long term. The other point is that the Ethiopian Airlines fleet is going to reach 250 by 2030. They need to have a meg-airport to accommodate taxi and ground operation for all these jets! Thanks for posting!

The new airport that will be built near Debre Zeit town will allow Ethiopian Airlines to fly nonstop to north America and it will allow the flights to reach at their destinations two hours earlier which will be great for connecting passengers.

Ethiopia, is predicted to be one of the biggest Economies in the world in about 20 years of time. Moreover this country is a Brics member nation. Already significant investment is coming to Ethiopia from UAE, China and many more. Whatmore Ethiopian needs a big big airport due to the huge growth the airlines is experiencing. Moreover, Ethiopian has an active fleet of 134 airplanes but it has an outstanding order of 74 aircraft. So they definitely need a major airport before their vision 2035.
Everyday. over 1,000 people are being killed by Abiy's troops in Oromia, Amhara and other part of the county, Universties are being turned into jails, Abiy is spending billions on building palace warships, drones and weapons and you are telling us Ethiopia would be the wealthiest county in 20 years. 😂😂😂

Ethiopian is not fighting Rwandan at all. First, With all the parameters considered to be in airlines business, Ethiopian is in different league. Second, Ethiopian is inclined to encourage regional airlines, the like of Rwandan to succeed in healthy competition in the airline business. This sector of business is very fierce and merciless to keep afloat and survive.
No it’s fighting but It’s more like competitiveness, they will benefit each others due to close proximity and natural they will compete, similarly to Tanzania and Kenya, or Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Ethiopia is indeed way ahead of Rwanda due to it’s population, so naturally they will create bigger infrastructure for its citizens

The new airport will be built at a lower altitude allowing Ethiopian Airlines to fly nonstop to north America, the flights will also arrive at their destinations two hours early when it avoids it current fuel stop in Europe.
Everything was good till you said that Ethiopian airlines is competing with Rwanadan airlines. Ethiopian airlines isnt competing with Rwandan airlines.The reason why it is building an airport that big is bc its planning to buy 100 more airplanes and the government is planning to hold the African cup in the near future. And it also does repairing and maintenance of airplanes for many countries in africa and the middle east.

I see east Africa as one of the fastest moving economies in the world, I see Kenya and Tanzania economies are doing very well, very similar, I see Ethiopia need of a port and it’s very smart division to ally to Somaliland, I hope they create a union to benefit both countries.
I see Rwanda the small but mighty champion who doesn’t have a port so instead they plan to become the business hub of Africa, their new airport is also very important to East African and the continent as a whole.

@@theancientsancients1769I think ur too stupid for this. This project has been being planned for years but they made a contract to build it just now, it is expected to be finished by 2029. And also Ethiopia is relatively stable now. There is no more war in the country. Its economy is one of the biggest in africa. And taking IMF loans doesn't show being broke. Most countries take loans from Imf, the major ones being the US, UK, Japan and more.
