He tends to talk in one shot without obnoxious American editing designed for an ADHD society. All the best programmes - in Europe at least - let content breathe at a natural pace.
Hes the best. Like anyone else I ompare the other guys and gals, and I keep coming back to Thomas. He's all about quality. Another great reviewer is 'Alex on Autos'. Similar format, very in depth, very high quality.
I have to say, Mercedes does know how to create the "wow effect" but for the whole video I thought to myself how much I really miss the Old Luxury, instead the New Luxury
well for me luxury would still mean build quality, materials, wood, riding comfort etc. they couldnˋt sell me a car because it has 10 different displays, all fancy led stripes and overly aggressive design.
I can still remember when my Dad brought home a Pontoon-sided 1956 Mercedes from Germany when he was transferred back to the states. I'll never forget the the huge steering wheel with a shiny metal ring for the horn, the fold down rear seat armrest, the column shifter, and the smooth engine noise. Even then I knew it was something special.
I always come for the car reviews, but I stay because he has such an engaging personality. So thorough and detailed - easily one of the best on YT doing it!
Too much distracting media displays for me, I miss the older, more technical and mechanical style with some essential buttons, less screens, haptic buttons and yes, the old style Exclusive style with a star on the lid. A car more for drivers than for kids, for them there are A and B and C class while E is more grownups models.
Aha... finally, the Mercedes ornament on the hood is back. Standing a three-pointed star is what a proper Mercedes logo should be. I cannot believe the Mercedes ditched such an iconic identity in the previous model.
nice looking car BUT - as they say - use it or lose it, And it applies to electronics as well as mechanics. I have a suspicion many drivers will use very few of those many gadgets, and they may fail the next owner due to 'rusting'. For me, the E class was always about luxurious, reliable full-size high-mileage driving, and not about gadgets.
What did you think of the functionality of the new steering wheel? My opinion is that it sucks compared to the new one since it has to much touch controls. The old one had physical buttons for both speed adjustment and volume. These are now gone and it’s really weird to use the new ones with that BIG swiping movement. Also the buttons are located too far away which at least for me means you have to move/hold your hand in a strange and uncomfortable way.
I agree, the haptic feedback rather than pure movement for the controls was bad enough but now all these sliding actions such as for the door handles, the sunroof and the driving display that all don't work that well... its going to be very frustrating. Having a menu to point the air vents and have them move by motors rather than just moving them with your hand has jumped the shark. I wounder how much will be working in 10 years time. The car might be a bit cheaper without all these gimics as well.
I haven't watched the video yet but I scanned the comments looking for a "capacitive BS" related one and here it is, I just knew it would have that crap in it but it sounds like they've doubled down this time!
Been following thomas for years now, it just dawned on me. if i were a student studing in germany, thomas would make a good proffessor to a none german speaking student, the man just takes his time and go into such detail. I learn so much about design and industrial engineering from autogefuhl its not even funny!
I wish they made one with less tech, more like the W124. I get the greed for more, but some of crave less. Reliable 6 cyl engine, few electronics to break, solid body, love the new seats, classic Mercedes suspension. Standard analog gauges. A radio with bluetooth is all I need with zero distractions.
Capacitive buttons and a giant screen don’t say luxury to me at all. The car looks great but is a let down once you get inside. Hopefully by the time I can afford these cars they will have moved back to physical buttons again!
Looks like Thomas had difficulty with the capacitive touch sunroof... (he mentioned editing it out) as well as with the steering wheel controls. It seems to be a technology that is still to be fully developed. VW is coming in for a lot of criticism over their capacitive touch steering wheel and is rumoured to be reverting back to a more traditional approach.
i felt the same about the facelifted w213, i think this car will grow on us all tbh, its a hit or miss rn but as i said it should grow on us as time goes on :)
@@jasminechin8656 I'm fine with Mercedes' reliability. It's best to lease, buy new, or buy low mileage pre-owned. Honestly the "reliable" companies have their fair share of headaches, but even then, reliability is just one piece of the puzzle. MB does tick a lot of boxes.
I'm surprised, it looks really good! I just hope the interior doesn't follow the trend of all other MBUX models that are made from cheap, thin, rattly plastic! I've been in the new C-Class and if you put any kind of pressure on any piece of the interior it squeeks and moves, it also rattles when going over any kind of small bump in the road.
unfortunately, it seems all of their cars are going that way now, The prior E-class looked perfect I don't know why they needed to ruin the interior of this new one. Very sad to see
The wheelbase on the W214 E-Class is now only 4mm shorter than on the W220 S-Class. Nice to see that the standing Mercedes hood ornament is back for the Exclusive Line. It looks really good here in Nautic Blue. Also, with the 'superscreen', the E-Class now has more screen real estate than the S-Class (not EQS), which just has a regular centre screen with no front passenger screen.
I relate with you about the e class. My dad used go drive us around in the E class when i was younger, i thjnk it was the w124 model. He taught me that when it comes to csrs in the road its not just about jorsepower, its about the deiver as well. He could overtake audis and bmws on the road when he drives and it was solid proof to me that mercedes is no land yacht like people say. Good memories!

This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I have to say your review of this vehicle is a lot better than some I've seen.. The premiere line looks so nice what a beautiful car although given my late age it would take me a long time to know how all of the tech works in it. I go on the Mercedes configurator UK sometimes and make my own so I can't wait for Mercedes to update their web site so I can make my own new E class not that I can afford one but it's nice to dream a little.
Gorgeous! I hope they bring the exclusive line to the US this time around. Virtually impossible to get on the last generation… and if you could, it was only a base model with no options 😢

I feel design is much better than 2023 (I Like the change to rear-break light design). I personally don't like these superscreens, prefer model with no passenger side screen.
Firstly Thomas thank you for your great review, you always nail it for us. Secondly, thank you Merc for finally making a car that actually looks unique. The new c class and s class are just the same thing on different sizes, but this one is unique in looks and features. Lastly, that passenger screen thing is not worth it.
Great introduction to the new model! Your videos are always appreciated. I'm waiting for Mercedes to copy VWs return to physical buttons, but other than that, it looks fantastic. Having an option for the superscreen without the stupid passenger screen is great
Yes, but I expect in the UK it won't be available on the base models and it will probably be lumped in with a 'pack' thus forcing you to spend money on stuff you don't need. The days are gone when you could just buy the options you wanted. For e.g. for my present Merc I wanted the upgraded lights, but was told I could only get them as part of an expensive pack that included a sunroof and upgraded stereo, neither of which I wanted. Blackmail. I didn't oblige!
I think those wide large screens will give awful glares from the sun. Also again, touchscreens while driving are the worst and they get so dirty so fast.
I don't like it. I don't need the digital show. The one with the wood console is better but what happened to wood inlays on the doors to warm up the interior. The ambient lights are over the top too. Dancing lights with dancing music. It's like Mercedes has run out of ideas for substantive luxury so they're coming up with screen shows to simulate luxury.
@@MaticTheProto no not really, E-class is the first car under the S-class. It should be a classy and elegant car, a place where you sit and feel comfortable. Piano black and large screens are not exactly things that make people feel at ease or even comfortable. There is a reason why serene places use warm and earthy colors and almost have zero technology. And lets not even talk about the UI of the vehicle and the design. Benz is trying too hard to satisfy one particular market and anyone can guess which one it is.
That room is so very German 🙂 I am curious to see how the suspension has been tuned for this AMG version (prev gen was so harsh) and how it'll go through tires. The new E looks great and the tail lamp signature is pretty nice.
The new E class just seems to be the new segment benchmark....no doubts there...and am glad the avant-garde package has the Mercedes crest on the bonnet.....just oozes a professional flair to the best executive sedan ever......
@@torsung81 The side passenger seems to be able to change navigation, music etc. Seems like a distraction to the driver to me. Passengers should not be able to change any settings driver sets.
I love the video conferencing camera, will be looking forward to that. But curious on why modern cars do not come with a dash cam standard or as an option?
Here in the UK, Mercedes only import the AMG line versions. Lets hope this time we can get the traditional grille and bonnet badge. I intend this to be my last proper car before they are banned and I aim for it to see me out!
@Everram Yes. I think Audi and BMW have relatively decent reliability here in The US market. I've always liked Mercedes looks but generally prefer the driving dynamics of BMW and Audi...personal preference 👍.

Yeah you’re right, when i saw those blanked off exhaust pipes and the real one curved down behind the bumper, i did think Wow!

Because this isn't luxury. Screens and glossy surfaces everywhere aren't luxury, it screams cheapness to me.
The Exclusive line with the more traditional grill actually works more for me. Overall looking good.

Now, with the camera inside, BIG BROTHER can see everything you are doing. Yay.
Looks good, but all those capacitative buttons and touch screens are a pain to use.
The joints of the C pillars and trunk compartment is a masterpiece of aesthetic and engineering combination.
This is the first video of yours that I've watched and I have to say your review of this vehicle is a lot better than some I've seen..
The premiere line looks so nice what a beautiful car although given my late age it would take me a long time to know how all of the tech works in it.
I go on the Mercedes configurator UK sometimes and make my own so I can't wait for Mercedes to update their web site so I can make my own new E class not that I can afford one but it's nice to dream a little.

I have no idea what happening with design language of mercedes, but for me everything since w213 is quite off (w213 restyling included)

I feel design is much better than 2023 (I Like the change to rear-break light design). I personally don't like these superscreens, prefer model with no passenger side screen.

Everything looks amazing, but am I the only one who wishes they went for the fancy buttons rather than everything being a touch screen?
Firstly Thomas thank you for your great review, you always nail it for us. Secondly, thank you Merc for finally making a car that actually looks unique. The new c class and s class are just the same thing on different sizes, but this one is unique in looks and features. Lastly, that passenger screen thing is not worth it.

Great introduction to the new model! Your videos are always appreciated. I'm waiting for Mercedes to copy VWs return to physical buttons, but other than that, it looks fantastic. Having an option for the superscreen without the stupid passenger screen is great
Yes, but I expect in the UK it won't be available on the base models and it will probably be lumped in with a 'pack' thus forcing you to spend money on stuff you don't need. The days are gone when you could just buy the options you wanted. For e.g. for my present Merc I wanted the upgraded lights, but was told I could only get them as part of an expensive pack that included a sunroof and upgraded stereo, neither of which I wanted. Blackmail. I didn't oblige!

I think those wide large screens will give awful glares from the sun. Also again, touchscreens while driving are the worst and they get so dirty so fast.
My touch screen in my Volvo I clean it daily with terry cloth towel. Sometimes 2 times.
@@johngaudet6316 Indeed. Volvo touchscreen is not that large but imagine cleaning half a tv everyday.
how much replacement cost for all screens in passenger cabin?
I don't like it. I don't need the digital show. The one with the wood console is better but what happened to wood inlays on the doors to warm up the interior. The ambient lights are over the top too. Dancing lights with dancing music. It's like Mercedes has run out of ideas for substantive luxury so they're coming up with screen shows to simulate luxury.
But can you afford it??

@@MaticTheProto no not really, E-class is the first car under the S-class. It should be a classy and elegant car, a place where you sit and feel comfortable. Piano black and large screens are not exactly things that make people feel at ease or even comfortable.
There is a reason why serene places use warm and earthy colors and almost have zero technology. And lets not even talk about the UI of the vehicle and the design. Benz is trying too hard to satisfy one particular market and anyone can guess which one it is.

I am curious to see how the suspension has been tuned for this AMG version (prev gen was so harsh) and how it'll go through tires. The new E looks great and the tail lamp signature is pretty nice.

The Amg line grille looks like something from aliexpress and don't really like those fake plastic vents on the bumper
leaves me cold, while Polestar makes my heart sing.
Dashboard looks like a bunch of dollar store tablets.

Why does the passenger need a screen? I dont understand that trend at all. Otherwise these cars look amazing.

The passangers are the only ones who needs a screen. The driver should be looking at the road.
@@torsung81 The side passenger seems to be able to change navigation, music etc. Seems like a distraction to the driver to me. Passengers should not be able to change any settings driver sets.

this is the best modern mercedes sedan deisgn. and the green color is quite nice. glad green is making a comeback across marques.

Here in the UK, Mercedes only import the AMG line versions. Lets hope this time we can get the traditional grille and bonnet badge. I intend this to be my last proper car before they are banned and I aim for it to see me out!

@Everram Yes. I think Audi and BMW have relatively decent reliability here in The US market. I've always liked Mercedes looks but generally prefer the driving dynamics of BMW and Audi...personal preference 👍.
