Manson or Girard. Who Would the Avs Move If they HAD to Move One? Is Barclay Goodrow an Option?

  • The full no trade clause in Josh Manson's contract is up and it is now a limited no move clause where he will provide his list of teams he can refuse to be traded to. The same goes for Samuel Girard. The Colorado Avalanche likely don't wish to part with either defensemen, but if their hand was forced and they had to, which one would they move? We discuss.
    We also talk about the recent waiving of New York Rangers depth forward of Barclay Goodrow. He would make a lot of sense for the Avs. But like everything else this offseason, the money would have to be right. Could they make it work?
    Finally, we look at the last 15 years of #24 picks in the NHL draft. It's a crap shoot to say the least.

    I know im dreaming but what I wouldnt give to have another Rob Blake. He was awesome to watch. 6 ft 4 220lbs and a hip check that was a thing of beauty. He was feared by the entire league for his hip checks. I agree we need to bulk up not get smaller. We cant hang when it gets really physical. Go Avs!! Great podcast guys! Like always

    Seeing the physicality in the Conf Finals & SC Finals, I do not want to lose Manson! The Avs have smaller guys in the system in Malinski, Behrens, & Gulyayev. The point is winning in the playoffs, which GMCM already addressed in his quote "harder to play against". I'm sticking with this mindset.

    I don't want them to trade either necessarily, but the Avs do have three more smaller offensive-minded defensemen in Malinski, Behrens and Gulyayev. They may not be ready now, but down the line, they could possibly replace Girard. The Avs don't really have a physical defenseman other than Manson. Girard has struggled in the past without being paired with a physical defenseman.

  • @bafriesen
    @bafriesen หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    You knew I'd be here for this one :) The answer is moving on from Girard. The Avs have 4+ other guys just like him and do what he can do, better in fact. The Avs DO NOT have another Josh Manson. They never replaced Erik Johnson and they're ditching Jack Johnson. Manson is the only guy left on the blue line that has the jam it takes for playoffs. This isn't about having an enforcer like Kyle thinks. This is about having a team of guys with enough f**k you attitude and size to physically survive 4 rounds of stanley cup playoffs (look at the 2 teams left in the finals both in the top of league for size). The Avs have never ever gotten past round 2 with Girard in the line up. The Girard trade was good 7-8 years ago. Now he's got to go so the team can build up the proper personnel for another run.
    Names I like: Brendon Dillon (UFA $4M)...Gudbranson (CBJ $4M)...Luke Schenn (NSH $2.75M)...Soucy (SEA $3.25M)
    While this is hypothetical I have a feeling the Avs GM would actually trade away Josh Manson and not replace him to continue with this small man approach. If MacFartin really did that I think I'd SERIOUSLY have to find a new team to root for until MacFartin is removed from his position.

  • @TJTwolf
    @TJTwolf หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    If the Avs trade Manson then they've lost their only real physicality and nastiness on the D. They'll be a pushover in the regular season let alone the playoffs and Manson would be extremely hard to replace imo. They also don't really have anyone in the system that fits to replace him so you're looking at free agency, cost, chemistry etc. I love Sam Girard BUT he's replaceable short term from outside for less (get Landy to talk to his old friend Gustafsson for example) and within the system there are guys who, you have to think at least one of them, can step up going forward to replace Sammy (Malinski, Gulyayev, Behrens) and also similar guys who could be available in free agency cheaply like Walsh. There's also the factor that Girard SHOULD give the Avs a much better return in a trade.
    There is also no way the Avs should be giving up both Nichushkin & Girard for Laine. That would be highway robbery for Columbus!

    • @LockedOnAvalanche
      @LockedOnAvalanche  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the Avs were to trade Manson I'm pretty confident they would find something at a lesser value who would be their muscle. They would have to. And no, the Avs wouldn't give up all that for Laine. But if the team really wants to be done with Val, maybe they give a team a lifetime of a deal so this problem is no longer theirs. Because on it's own, Val's value is in the tank.

      @@LockedOnAvalanche , there's no way that the Avs could find two players who can fill Sammy's role, but can they find one player, i.e. Sean Walker, who could do what Sammy does and perhaps add more scoring punch for a little cheaper? Or, could the Avs perhaps find another defenseman who is more physical? The lack of physicality besides Manson is more magnified in the playoffs and against physical play.

    I do like girard and Manson. But I think Manson might be easier to replace. And if they were to let Manson go I'd rather have them take from their farm as I think it'd be cheaper while also having a fresher slate to mold into whatever they might need from a depth defensemen. But I've been wrong before.

    If the Avs are in a position where they have to trade Manson or Girard, I believe you shop both and trade which ever gets you the best value.
    On the topic of Laine, that trade is horrible. Both Laine and Nichushkin have off-ice issues. They both have produced at the same rate offensively. Nuke is far and away the better defensive player. You don't then "sweeten the pot" with Girard and a 1st.

    @SirSiegrist หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A first, Nuke, and Sammy G for Laine? That is a horrendous trade offer. Nuke and a late round pick is more than fair.
    Manson or Girard is easy in the sense that Manson's game is much easier to replace for cheaper then Girard's would be.

    • @LockedOnAvalanche
      @LockedOnAvalanche  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That specific deal I don't think is something the Avs would do. It's a very rich deal, but the question is how much do they want to move on from Val. Right now, for this off-season he wouldn't be the main piece of a trade because he just comes with too much risk. Which is why I think the Avs bring him back, let him play up until around the deadline then move him. He'll hopefully have gained back some of that value by then and could be a little easier to move. Right now you'll have to beg a team to take him.

    In a perfect world we keep both. But if I HAD to choose? Manson. No doubt. F*uck all the Girard haters out there, he was one of our most reliable defensive players this year, and overall his defense is pretty solid every year. Manson seems like a great guy, he can skate, and he can be physical, but this year in particular his 'physicality' had him taking penalties left and right. We don't need a physical defenseman if it means having to be on the PK frequently.
    Plus the role manson fills is easier to replace, minus the fact that he's a right shot. We need a reliable defensive defenseman who is an animal on the backcheck and can skate at least a little better than JJ.
