    Very nice video..I was involved in sugar industry back in the Philippines..This process of harvesting is really great.. less manpower needed for such a large scale sugar plantation..

    Here in South Florida we grow sugar cane and burn it before harvest it helps put nutrients back in the soil and helps grow the second crop of the season. It's always nice to see how other states are growing and harvesting

      Here in Australia we harvest green most of the time. Very rare to burn. All the tops and thrash form a layer and creates a great blanket.

      Actually, both of these machines were built from the ground up as specialized sugarcane equipment. The cutter was made by Broussard Cane Equipment and the loader is obviously John Deere. John Deere bought out Cameco Industries in the 90's and basically started painting their cane equipment green. You can see some of the old Cameco equipment in my other videos, their's is the yellow equipment.

    Stopped at Nichols State U. in Thibodaux for work last week. I was stunned by the massive cane fields in the area. At first I thought it was corn. I'd love to see the processing of the cane after you haul it to the mill. Also noticed that some fields had hydrants (closer to town) - was that for burning cane? Didn't realize that most sugar esp. in Europe is from sugar beets. It's gotta say "cane sugar" to be from cane.

    my father in law, Dr. Henry Long, used to scout these farms for cane borers. Cane is a very tough crop and will regrow up to three times w/o replanting...they usually will plant other crops in rotation every 4th year and then come back in and plant cane...this used to be done by hand...

    This is certainly interesting, and a very different process than any of the other forms of farming I know anything about.
    It is clear though that I don't understand the lifecycle of sugar cane and where the final harvest comes from. If all you do is chop it and top it and bury it again across the street, where do you finally get something to turn into sugar?

    • @AerialAg
      @AerialAg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sugarcane regenerates after its cut without planting. Every year the sugarcane regenerates its weight goes down. On the forth year they plow under and replant. It's that part you're seeing here. They cut a small amount for planting compared to harvest.

      That's correct. They plant the whole stalk of sugarcane in the ground. Sugarcane stalks are full of joints called nodes. New sugarcane grows from these nodes.

    Interesting video and completely different to how it’s done in Australia.
    I have to admit that your method is pretty wasteful compared to the way it’s done in Australia. We’d use at a guess, a 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of cane to plant a paddock as you do and with a lot less machinery.
    How is fertiliser applied to the planted cane? Are you using liquid or granular fertiliser?
    Always interesting to see how things are done elsewhere.
    Cheers.

    • @AerialAg
      @AerialAg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's funny I've heard people here tell me that billet planting was wasteful. I'm sure they're are reasons they still like to plant wholestalk in Louisiana. I'm not a farmer, so I don't have a real answer to that. The fertilizer is liquid. This farm has a larger John Deere sprayer that they use once the cane is in the ground. Some farms have started using larger planters like this that can plant three rows of cane at a time.

    • @shramiac
      @shramiac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Over here a regular harvester and bin tractors (as per cutting the cane to be sent to the mill) are used to cut the billets. The bin tractors then tip the the billets into the “planter” tractor setup. The planter is equipped with all the insecticides, fungicides and either liquid or granular (the most popular method) fertiliser.
      The fallow paddock is limed (if needed) then and rotary hoed, rolled flat and some shallow guidelines laid for the planter to follow. The planter then digs the furrow, drops its cargo and covers it all in one pass. Admittedly most planters were single row but two row planters are becoming more common.
      I guess both systems work though. lol

    • @AerialAg
      @AerialAg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      shramiac yes that's interesting. I know they do some billet planting here but I've been told they still have some issues to work out before it becomes more common. I'd be sorry to see the wholestalk method go away because I really enjoy seeing this older style equipment working. When I was a child they would plant and harvest wholestalk.. I guess it holds a certain nostalgia for me.

      @christopherlovelock9104 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So what will they put in this field, or, will it be left 'fallow' as we say in the UK. Very interesting video. Sort of 'grow your own seed', although our potato growers don't use some of their potatoes for planting for next years crop. Did I spot a couple of 'narrow gauge' loco's on the lawn of the nearby house.

    • @AerialAg
      @AerialAg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They usually take small pieces of multiple fields that they use for plant cane. And yes, those are some old cane hauling locomotives from long ago. Thats Laurel Valley Plantation, with over fifty original structures remaining it is the largest surviving 19th- and 20th-century sugar plantation complex left in the United States

      Thank-you. I'm sorry about all the questions, only here in the UK we don't grow it as a crop and I have never been to 'South' of the USA and it is fascinating to see. My 1st. wifes grandfather was a farmer and I spent many happy hours helping him at harvest time - I missed it when my wife and I got divorced, but that's life as they say.

      No problem at all. I'm happy to answer your questions if I can. If you're really interested check out these two short videos. One is the whole process of making sugar and the other is the John Deere video detailing the harvester.

    Planting sugar cane by hand one springtime was the worst job I ever had.
    Hot dry n dusty .
    Never stopped sneezing
    nose bled all day long.
    eyes full of crap .
    headache from the dieldrin being sprayed on the stalks
    Just a shit 3 months work. 1977.

    Man, you guys need a CH570 by John Deere! You're losing a lot of cane! That stuff adds up, you're losing tonnage.

      Walter Perry They're cutting, then loading cane into mechanical planters.. then planting it in the ground.. sugar cane does not grown from seeds.. rather from joints on stalks of cane
