      JDLMediaCo even though I am not the one being asked but I think that you should wait for the redesigned iMac with Apple Silicon because it will be much faster and smaller or you can buy a 13” MacBook pro with Apple Silicon
      But if you’re in hurry consider the 5k 2020 iMac because it is amazing and has great value

      Don't forget that we make a living working with and on the latest machines and resale of Macs is really good. In some cases its most cost effective to upgrade every year instead of waiting for 5 years for value to drop a ton. Add in being able to make money covering these new machines where you wouldn't if you have older ones and it makes a ton of sense.

    I bought the 2020 iMac with 8gigs of ram, 4TB hard drive, the Radeon 5700XT, and the 8 core processor for Windows gaming. Bought 64gb of 3rd party ram and upgraded that myself as soon as I pulled out the Mac from the box. So I use 2TB for Mac and 2TB for Windows which is why I got the 4TB SSD. Oh I also got the 10gig ethernet as well. Didn't get the fancy display coating because I feel that display could get damaged to easily. I can now play most games on the high graphics or ultra graphics settings, it's amazing. Would have waited for an M1 but no Windows compatibility so that's why I got this Mac. I don't really have the space to have a Mac and a PC box separately and would cost more as well.

    There was a Japanese channel that tested the 2020 iMac with different brands of ram. For some reason when you mix different brands the system could not detect all the ram. So if you plan to max out your 2020 iMac’s RAM in the future, it seems prudent to stick to only one brand of ram. Oddly enough this was never an issue with the 2019 5k iMac which I currently own.

  • @theSUBVERSIVE
    @theSUBVERSIVE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Apple is still owing people a form factor update too, 21.5" is kind of unacceptable nowadays, it should be at least in the 23"-24" for the smaller model and possibly add a 32" model to match the XDR display.
    I've seen some people saying that it will only happen when the iMac gets the Apple Silicon, but I don't think Apple can already match the higher-end Intel CPU with their Apple Silicon yet and I don't think it's reasonable to wait 2 years for a new form factor, it's already overdue.
    And unless you really need to upgrade now, RDNA2 is right around the corner, sure, Apple won't upgrade to RX6000 so soon, but I would suggest waiting for it because it will be well worth the wait. I know Apple will charge quite a lot but the top end GPU will basically double the RX5700XT performance - or maybe Apple will reserve that one for the iMac Pro.

    • @RiceCubeTech
      @RiceCubeTech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I took some 4k HEVC 4:2:2 log footage from the EOS R5 into an Apple store today and airdropped it to the 2020 iMac. It couldn't play it in real time any better than the 2019 16" MacBookPro that I have. I suspect that even though the 10th gen intel CPU has hardware decoding, the software attempts to playback using GPU acceleration. Tried Quicktime and Final Cut Pro X while I was there. The good news is that you can still render out the timeline and edit it smoothly like any Mac of the last 5 years, which is a point that is always conveniently neglected by those who love drama.

      Nothing about this will make it better relative in 2022 than the old iMac 2018 would have performed relative to today’s tech. People said the computers in the 90s will be future proof, but after the tech boom in the year 2000, all older computers will essentially rendered useless when new standards came out. We saw computers going from KB of Ram to gigabytes within a couple years. I never buy gear, thinking it’s going to last more than 5 years. But to each their own I guess

    That 10-core processor is interesting but will probably have huge thermal issues as it does not have the much better cooling system of the iMac Pro made specifically for powerful processors with more cores (up to 18-core) generating massive heat.

    I don't know. None of our PC's or Mac's seem to have much luck with the R5's 4K or 8K video, which have no issues whatsoever with 4K, 6K and 8K blackmagic, ARRI or other video content. We have some serious Mac and PC hardware, but nothing seems to work well with the new Canon R5's video in either 4k or 8K. We have tried it on our 2020 iMac 10-core, with Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16GB of VRAM and 64GB RAM, and our fairly decked out ($29K) 24 core 2020 Mac Pro, with 192GB RAM, dual Radeon Pro Vega II Duo's each w/2x32GB of HBM2 memory. It does a little better on our Dual NVideo 2080Ti based PC with 128GB RAM and 16 Core 9's.
    It seems to be a substantially CPU limited problem, as none of our GPU systems on any of the machines get pushed very hard on Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut. Just a wacky set of design choices on the R5 in terms of video CODEC's, and overall design limitations/flaws.
    Ours went back today, after wasting a week with it, and finding that any video work will start the R5 to time limit even the stills that come later. I'm sure that they just don't want it to compete with their CX00 line of video cameras, but that kind of sucks for us consumers.

    I'm sorry to let you down but the used Comet Lake CPUs in the new iMac do not have Gen 11 Graphics like the Ice Lake Notebook CPUs in the MacBook Pro 13".
    So they do not have the promised 422 decoding. There is no desktop CPU that uses it right now.

    Thank you for this info. MacPro/iMacPro are extremely expensive options on the Apple side. If you go the Windows/Hackintosh route, the i9 platform is pricey and doesn't offer much in the way of core-count (present or future), and even a modest AMD Threadripper w/add-in Thunderbolt 3 could set you back $4-5K. This has been the toughest time to upgrade since the early 2000s.

    Another great video Max. I watched it twice. I know you probably don't care that much, but with your and Vadim's enthusiasm and mostly positive coverage of Macs, I wonder if Apple will ever be sending you guys review units. I noticed Apple sending units to even smaller channels than this and Max Tech. I don't know how you can get on their 'list', but as long as it doesn't artificially inflate your review (which I KNOW it will not) I would love to see you guys be able to be one of the first ones to review new Macs!

    it will be interesting to see how this new iMac handles R5 8k footage. I just edited and posted a small 8K project using a windows 10 PC and Adobe premiere Pro using an NVidia RTX 2080ti and a 16 core Intel Core i9-9960X CPU overclocked to 4.5 GHZ. It was all proxies and rendering the effects as I was editing. I shot in IPB but even the ALL-I is about the same to edit since it is also H.265. But even on a really high end PC Adobe struggles with footage from the R5. It's better with the RAW footage actually, but not enough to make proxies optional so the workflow is about the same regardless of how you shoot your 8K. Unless you shoot 8 bit, handling the H.265 8 bit 420 works fairly well but you give up CLOG and it's a big downgrade. Here is the project I edited in 8k shot with the R5 - th-cam.com/video/xipbHLaKt2U/w-d-xo.html

    • @RiceCubeTech
      @RiceCubeTech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Idk how r5 footage can be so poorly optimized when the RED 8k footage can be edited full res in Adobe on a 2080 on a laptop. Adobe needs to update their software decoding and rendering process. Or canon needs to use a better codec

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RiceCubeTech Canon uses an industry standard h.265. There is no "poor optimization" unless you believe that h.265 is bad. And have you worked with red footage? If red footage was so light to edit, why does Red sell and recommend buying their $1k+ red rocket cards? Learn before you speak.

    • @EugeniaLoli
      @EugeniaLoli 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The visual difference on equal grounds is not distinguishable between the two, but the bitrate that would go for 4:2:2, now goes to 4:2:0, so it's LIKE you are using more bitrate for it than you would normally. So overall, 4:2:0 is a better deal. And of course, it edits many times faster, since it goes to GPU for processing instead of the CPU. I will be personally buying the Sony A7S III, and using 4:2:0. If I had kept my R6 preorder (I canceled it now), I would be forced to use 8bit recording, which of course, it makes no sense to pay all that money for an 8bit camera (particularly since the R6 does no proxies either, neither it has a proper hdmi connector, nor a holder-in-place like the R5 does, to connect to an atomos). So, Sony it is. Even if I'm full of Canon glass from previous purchases.

      @@dallatorretdu That's actually VERY good performance. The 4:2:0 variant runs on GPU, you see, which speeds up things immensely already. The 4:2:2 variant runs at 1-3 fps, even on a $15,000 computer.

      @@dallatorretdu No, it does not. It only supports 4:2:0 and 4:4:4. The 4:2:2 variant is specifically NOT supported. It requires additional electronics to support different subsamplings, it's not a matter of software. The CPU will do all the work, which means abysmal performance.

So while I only have the standard glass, in my room reflections is not a problem so I wouldn’t have shelled out the $500 anyway. But I am very happy to get my new iMac soon, my old workhorse is a late-2012 21.5” 1 TB HD and these days a simple Premiere Pro project sometimes makes the iMac have a heart attack with just 4 GB of RAM lol..

      I actually have a TB3 to 10GBe adapter that cost $200. Most of them have fans in them which spin up and are annoying (but could be custom fixed) and the connection is not as reliable as hardwired 10Gbe so it at times needs to be unplugged and plugged back in instead of working perfectly 24/7 and staying connected to our server. When looking into the differences between the 2019 iMac and 2017 iMac Pro and the cost difference plus the ability to buy a used base iMac Pro (which I did for $3500) it just made more sense to do so. My video comparison goes over all of this. The other downside is loosing one of the 2 TB3 ports on the iMac 5K and only being left with one. Now I'm going to sell the iMac Pro between $3000-$3500 before the resale drops and for about the same money get an overall better machine for vadim to edit on.
