  • A busy day of steam at York station, with the first “Scarborough Spa Express” of the year paired with some rare outings on the mainline for members of the National Collection.
    The day begins with West Coast Railways Class 33s 33029 and 33207 'Jim Martin' arriving from Carnforth in preparation for a selection of movements to and from the National Railway Museum, with on-going works at the site having seen several exhibits moved in and out of the museum’s Great Hall in recent months, some of these being moved to the Locomotion Museum in Shildon, the site having recently opened a new hall for additional undercover storage and display of items.
    Sole surviving Lancashire & Yorkshire Class 5 2-6-2 Tank 1008 was collected by the Class 33 duo, with the engine set to be displayed at the Bury Transport Museum, alongside LMS Stanier 3-Cylinder Tank 2500, another tank engine of the National Collection which had previously been displayed with 1008 at York. After passing through Platform 9 of York Station, ‘Lanky Tank’ was shunted through to the old Holgate Road Carriage Works to continue the journey to Lancashire via low-loader.
    Meanwhile, Un-rebuilt Bulleid Battle of Britian Class 34067 ‘Tangmere’ took charge of the first Scarborough Spa Express journey of 2024, paired with the Riviera Trains Mk2 BR Blue & Grey set. With continuing restrictions on the use of non-CDL fitted stock, West Coast Railways were required to hire in the Blue & Grey set, with the company’s own CDL fitted Mk2s being unavailable for the day’s tour to the Yorkshire Coast. We catch the tour on its departure from York up the line to Scarborough.
    Unfortunately, our choice of location for filming the SSE was poorly timed, meaning our cameras missed the return working of the Class 33 pair back from Holgate. This time, the 33s were coupled with Southern V Schools Class 30925 ‘Cheltenham’, with the Maunsell loco having arrived in York by road from the Mid-Hants Railway. No current plan are in place to overhaul the locomotive, resulting in a decision being made to return the loco to York where it could be kept on public display whilst undercover. A return journey back through the station was made to the NRM, with 30925 sandwiched between the two 33s.

    This is genuinely gutting for me. No. 1008 is one of my favourite York exhibits. It worked at Normanton, where I grew up, so I have a personal connection to it. Yet another loss for the NRM. :,(

    Lovely to see it out and about, I liked seeing the valve gear in between the frames, the rods moved up and down like grasshoppers :)

    Nice video. Also, it was interesting to see Standard & Slim Jim class 33’s coupled together, to see the physical differences

    I knew I had that feeling that 1008 would come to bury transport museum one day 😊

      Yes, unfortunately we had anticipated her move through the station being later than it ended up being, as it was shortly after Tangmere had departed, so sadly we missed capturing this

    How are non mainline certified steam trains allowed on the mainline?

    What happens to NRM when all the locos have been disbursed?
    At least with 1008 going to Bury there is a chance that it could restored to steam.

      Plenty of locos and stock remain in York, the NRM is currently undergoing a process of refurbishment, which has seen a number of items move to other museums. 1008 is still under the care of the NRM as part of the national collection.

      York is two bad moves away from me never going again. If they give away Henry Oakley and ruin the Station Hall, I’ll just stop bothering and go somewhere else. Now we’ve lost the Lanky Tank, there’s barely any locos I’m bothered to go see.

    Rather suspicious to see that 3 non CDL fitted mk1s were on the SSE, one clearly being a TSO...

    • @BrickishRail
      @BrickishRail  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I understand that any non-CDL fitted coaches being used have their doors locked out of use. The exception being the loco support coach, which is staff use only

      @N_T_H
      No, yes and no.
      The first coach is a support coach for the steam loco
      The Buffet is clearly empty and has signs in the door windows to say those doors and coach are out of use (go and look at Jacobite videos, they did the same there)
      99712 is an ex-SK which was converted to a Full Kitchen coach a few years back so no passengers can sit in that even if they wanted to (go and have a look at it on google)

    Why was the tank engine on the mainline?

    • @BrickishRail
      @BrickishRail  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Being moved to Bury Transport Museum, road transport can't access the museum directly so engines have to be shunted to the nearby former Carriage Works in Holgate for onward transport
