To all those chiming in. I work on AKs, as well as restore furniture and items I find in thrift stores, it's why these videos intrigue me. IMO, it was not necessary to remove the barrel (unless it was pitted and needed replacing, which the video didn't say). As he said you need a press to remove and install but it was commendable all the same. A 10-ton press is really best to do this but the average person does not have access to one in their garage. Also, the trigger guard was iffy as to necessity but again commendable and nice to see it done, his videos are top-notch. It's possible that it could continue to rust between the guard and receiver but unlikely with minimal care, these are AK's after all. Also, possible that the rivets were loose, and if that's the case then that would be a good reason for replacement. Thanks again for the video, your work is always great and I love watching them! The lack of bolt and barrel restoration makes me wonder if it is firing condition. Those barrels are usually chrome lined but idk how well it would have held up seeing the rest of the rifle... The bolt is surely ruined. When it is replaced it needs to be fitted, headspaced, to ensure it isn't dangerous to fire. Maybe that's a bit much for him. A barrel replacement would also require headspacing.

As an AK freak for well over a decade I absolutely love what you’ve done here, I feel like that needs to get together with my Izzy AKM and my Tula AKMS and be a family lol. I will admit I’d rather see some nice Soviet wood go on there but you have a cool Khyber Pass thing going on there. I have to ask though, that’s an original barreled rifle, what does the bore look like on that puppy? All of my (non SGL import) 7.62x39 Russian guns were unissued demills that I built up with FB Radom barrels so I’m curious what type of accuracy your getting out a what is obviously a well used rifle restored to glory with the original pipe.
Since he hasn't answered yet, I'll try for him. My SKS has a chrome lined barrel that looks like a polished mirror, nothing sticks to it. I'd assume that rifle probably has a chrome lined barrel as well, which would probably hold up fairly well I'd assume. Just speculation.
Right, my thinking is that a complete 71 Izzy may very well have been used in a theater of war. If that’s the case and we don’t know who the user was then its likely corrosive ammunition was used throughout the weapons lifecycle and if it was used in the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia or by poorly trained guerrilla forces in general then their weapons maintenance might not really be up to standard, meaning it may have seen several users, a metric shit ton of rounds, or may have developed rust or pitting even through the chrome lining. Of course it could have seen a barrel swap during its combat lifespan… I don’t know I would just assume that a 50 year old rifle in that condition would have a really rough bore. I mean if I shoot 7n6 through any of my 74s and put them away for 24 hours I can begin to see light rust forming in the barrel, which is why I rinse the salts out of my rifles whenever using corrosive ammo right after I’m done shooting.
It isn’t an Izzy, it’s a Romanian gun. Russian guns used a 2 digit date code where Romanians used the full year. Also, the Romanian Arsenal mark has the arrow touching the base of the triangle, Izhevsk has the arrow and the triangle separated and there is fletching on the base
It's very easy. 10 years ago I dud a few rifles with a stainless steel tank I paid $240 for, a few gallons of phosphate solution, 2 burners used for an outdoor fryer and a meat thermometer. Then duracoated semi gloss black. Still looks great and is/was an incredibly durable finish.
Just fire it a couple times and it would work perfectly again. nice restoration but i like it more with the wood parts instead of the plastic parts on it.
I’m glad for that fact with this video too. Which reminds me, if the video game Metro Exodus was completely realistic, cleaning the guns from dirt and decay would take much, much longer.

That is why you should have blued it instead of paint it and put on new wood furniture instead of the plastic stuff.
Soviet AKMs were never blued. They were phosphated and then painted black
He probably couldn't get wooden furniture as plastic is more common. Also, bluing is a really toxic process and cerakote is better because it doesn't rust and it will last for about 10 years
With the pitting on the steel the bluing would have looked weird (the pitting shows up a bit more in my experience). With cerekote it fills in the pits slightly but also makes them less noticeable.
Cerekote is a better harder finish. And as far as using poly furniture. Wood warps snd doesn't dissipate heat well. The poly furniture likely had a heat shield in it.

Restoration means completed as if new....

@@mouthbreather280 An assault rifle is a fully automatic rifle, this AKM doesn’t seem to be fully automatic (its a semi-automatic rifle), doesn’t take away from the fact that assault rifle is an actual term.

Yeah since it’s an AKM made in 1971, I would guess the bore is pretty intact but not perfect thanks to the chrome lining
