It's my favorite Donkey Kong Country game because for me it's the first one that felt fair to me. The rocket barrel in Returns felt like carrying an egg through sawblades, having to repeat the same world after losing lives in one level in the original was irritating, and whose idea was it to only make saving possible with a collectible in DKC2?

Poor DKC Tropical Freeze…it was a goated game and honestly one of the best 2D platformers Nintendo has ever put out. But both due to being released on WiiU and people being frustrated that Retro Studios were doing “another Donkey Kong game” instead of a new Metroid Prime, it unfortunately ended up being severely overlooked. And while the Switch port did give it somewhat of a second chance, the only real lasting things to come from it were both the complaints about its price and the New Funky Mode meme.
I looked it up, and Tropical Freeze on Switch has sold over 4 million, which is pretty solid sales numbers even in spite of the issues. Like, the issues surrounding the game ARE unfortunate, but still. On the positive side, it’s done well for itself.
Don't forget that Nintendo delisted the Wii U version from the eShop shortly before the release of the Nintendo Switch version, meaning you have to pay the increased price.

I’m a massive fan of good ol 2D platformers. Been around the block with many different games that fit the genre. Tropical Freeze easily ranks in my top 3 without question. Top tier level design and variety combined with a beautiful soundtrack from the great David Wise. If you’ve never played this game and enjoy platformers in any degree this is an absolute must play.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is my favorite game of all time, and it is sad to see how poorly Nintendo managed the marketing for this game and also how Nintendo have handled DK during the Switch era. Like, we know that it wasn’t supposed to happen like this- DK was meant to get a game that was cancelled when Activision pulled Vicarious Visions off the project and we haven’t seen a release since barring the upcoming Returns HD. And while that game has its own issues, I’m incredibly happy for Returns HD. While I would like them to fix some of the graphical things people have noticed, I think it overall looks nice. But more than anything, I’m incredibly happy to have a definitive version of the game. A version with button controls, a version in HD, a version with the 3DS exclusive levels- it’s something I’ve genuinely wanted for a while, at least to tide me over for the next game. And also, I just wanted the complete DKC series on Switch, between NSO’s DKC 1, 2, and 3 and the Tropical Freeze port. …Like, we also still need DK64, but that feels like a matter of when, not a matter of if like Returns did.
When I noticed the game was on carpet, all I could think of was you laying on your tummy kicking your feet in the air. Having an absolute blast while recording this video.
This is a game from 2014 and yet it still feels like a generation ahead of games like Mario Wonder. Will be hard to make a better platformer than this. Indie Games like Celeste really carry the genre nowadays, but they lack the budget to become as visually fullfilling as DK is. It's like playing a Pixar movie.

when i remember how public reacted to this announcement i always get a little bit salty
I would still say this game gets lowballed. Like this is arguably the best 2D platformer ever made and it still reviewed in the mid 80s on Metacritic. Still a good score but if “Mario” was in the title the game would at least crack 90s.
tropical freeze getting 83 on metacritic when NSMBU got 84 is inexcusable. even on switch, tropical freeze's 86 is still too low. games of comparable or lower quality get higher scores than this. this game deserves 10s, not 8s.
I wanted to play this at the cottage in the evenings. The first night, I had my beer open, and my joint rolled. But for the life of me, I couldn't find my damn controllers!!
this is one of the best 2D platformers ever made, literally perfect in pretty much every way, its an absolute tragedy that people keep buying boring, unimaginative mario sidescrollers that regurgitate the same leveldesign and songs over and over and over again, while we havent gotten a new donkey kong country game in ages.
@@batmanbud2 I havent played that one, but pretty much all of the new super mario bros sidescrollers on DS, wii and wii u are very "safe", unimaginative games that add absolutely nothing to the formula established decades ago. they are fun of course, they are serviceable games, but there are only so many times I can run through the same sand-, ice- and grass-worlds with the same tunes (remixed), the same enemies, and the same randomly placed floating platforms. like one new boring power up doesnt help either.
@@AlkonKomm You really should give Wonder a shot. Pretty much everyone and their mom agrees it's better than every single New Super Mario Game out there. I still think the DK Country games are kings of 2D platforming as a whole, but SMB Wonder is a joy to play.
as someone who despises the NSMB series for its safeness and blandness, you gotta give wonder a shot. it's one of the most creative and best designed 2D platformers ever made. it's the exact return to form that 2D mario needed. tropical freeze is still better though
Tropical Freeze was hard, but fair. It's still the only DKC game I've managed to beat, so I chalk that up to not trying to play it as if it's a Mario game.
One of my favorite games of all time. People were such babies complaining about this not being Prime 4, as if Returns wasn't also excellent and plenty deserving of a follow-up. I love Metroid too, and I get that the series was in a bit of a drought at the time so people were frustrated, but DKC is such a stellar franchise and it freaking sucks how consumers and the press treated this game. Now we're ten years on without a single new DK game and I can't help but feel that's due in large part to how unfairly Tropical Freeze was recieved. This game is so good that it should have spawned a renaissance for the series, not condemned it to perpetual stasis.
This is not only my favorite game for the Wii U, but it's also my favorite game for the Switch. The soundtrack by David Wise is one of the best videogame soundtracks of all time. Great analysis! Excellent video
One of my favorite games ever and I can't wait to watch this video from Scotty boy!! Seeing the receipt in the case at the end of the video made me so happy. I used to do the same thing :')
Back when this was announced at E3 2013, I was following gaming news, but not enough to the point where I was incredibly in the know regarding general reception yet. So I didn't see any disappointment about Tropical Freeze, and I was through the roof excited for it, far more than Super Mario 3D World even. And I was instantly hooked on the game, to the point where I did and still do consider it my favorite 2D platformer of all time. To this day, I've never seen a world that's so fleshed out and alive in a platformer like I did with this game. And the movement, atmosphere, and sound design all come together to create such an unforgettable experience. It's a top 10 game for me, easily, and I wish more people weren't so quick to write it off and would just give it a fair chance.
Returns on Wii made me love DK, so I was stoked to play Tropical Freeze. Both are EXCELLENT, though I do agree that Tropical Freeze leans just a bit too much into the hard difficulty
I remember those times. While Nintendo took some strange choices around that time, the fans truly didn't know what a great game they had in their hands. I finally tried this game on Switch after having heard only great things about it and I loved it so much I later caught up with the rest of the series. It also distracted me during a tough time so I love it even more for that.
I remember one year Nintendo game this game away for free as the platinum reward for club Nintendo. It was how I got the game. I think even the switch version for a pretty deep digital discount after only a year. Something like it was only $15.
Let's not forget when gamespot gave Tropical Freeze a 6/10 for "Unimaginative level design." like wut, did we play the same game?

Whatever you do, don’t look up his setup…
Best DK game. Great level design, legendary soundtrack. Tropical Freeze RULES
I wanted to play this at the cottage in the evenings. The first night, I had my beer open, and my joint rolled. But for the life of me, I couldn't find my damn controllers!!
One thing I think is great about this game is that every level is unique to itself and the level design is spectacular. It's all very creative.
The Wii U may not have needed a Donkey Kong game, but Donkey Kong Country Returns needed a followup.
this is one of the best 2D platformers ever made, literally perfect in pretty much every way, its an absolute tragedy that people keep buying boring, unimaginative mario sidescrollers that regurgitate the same leveldesign and songs over and over and over again, while we havent gotten a new donkey kong country game in ages.
You're not talking about Mario Wonder, right? That game is up there for me.
@@batmanbud2 mario wonder was fine for me but dktf gameplay is just different in some way that makes mario wonder boring in comparison
7:35 Good to see the unknown hatted kong get some attention.
One of the most beautiful art in gaming 🙏🏼
Reggie wearing that Metroid pin is the most Reggie thing he could do in that situation, lmao
DKC Tropical Freeze was one of my favorite experiences on the Wii U. I didn’t know it had it so rough, I thought everyone loved it.
Tropical Freeze was hard, but fair. It's still the only DKC game I've managed to beat, so I chalk that up to not trying to play it as if it's a Mario game.
Absolutely goated game. Worth all the love that it gets.
They were pretty Cranky about that reveal
The tragedy is that they didn’t have a funky mode in the first place
Have you ever heard the tragedy of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze? It's not a legend Nintendo would tell you...
I wish that they added Dixie Kong to Returns.
I love how this game's re-release on switch basically added a mandatory "Vergil DLC" type thing for $10
David Wise also went SO hard on the OST for this game. Really brought the entire game together imo.
Agreed, it’s one of the best games ever made. Ten years later and no 2D platformer has beat it, AAA or indie.
Ironically it's Donkey Kong who is in a drought now, while Metroid has been getting new releases
DKCTF is one of my favorite games ever. I really hope they make another DKC
Jungle Beat should never be forgotten, amazing game!
I love that you keep the receipt inside the case, I do that yoo
i've unfortunately never played this game but i've been obsessed with its soundtrack for years
3:54 After New Super Mario Bros U, I think that need needed to be filled
How can a game sell well and poorly at the same time?
Have you ever heard the tragedy of Donkey Kong Country the Tropical Freeze?
Doug, you've told me this already.
Been aware of it since 2014
Back when this was announced at E3 2013, I was following gaming news, but not enough to the point where I was incredibly in the know regarding general reception yet.
Tragedy? It's a masterpiece.
0:20 I guess you could say this game always got a bad DK Rap
0:03 a tangible reaction to the reveal of amiibo festival: Switch
Returns on Wii made me love DK, so I was stoked to play Tropical Freeze. Both are EXCELLENT, though I do agree that Tropical Freeze leans just a bit too much into the hard difficulty
I remember those times. While Nintendo took some strange choices around that time, the fans truly didn't know what a great game they had in their hands.
I finally tried this game on Switch after having heard only great things about it and I loved it so much I later caught up with the rest of the series. It also distracted me during a tough time so I love it even more for that.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was released on December 4, 2012
"Have you ever heard of the tragedy of Donkey Kong ?"
I remember one year Nintendo game this game away for free as the platinum reward for club Nintendo. It was how I got the game. I think even the switch version for a pretty deep digital discount after only a year. Something like it was only $15.
scott's really good at peaking the mic
