As a kid and to this day I love the variety the trilogy gave:
The first one felt like a fun road trip.
The second was a dark Don Bluth film.
The third felt like a vacation in North Murica.

Donkey Kong Country 2 is my childhood. I still remember seeing the commercial in my parents room before going out for breakfast and asking them to buy it for me. They did so that weekend. Good memories.
Only DKC2? I think of these games as one massive adventure. I couldn’t imagine any of them being left out without the others

Yep, I thought I was the only one who liked DKC3, everyone else I’ve seen just forgot about it
I think the gimmicks save it for repeat plays but hurt most people's opinions on initial playthroughs. Also the rocket barrel levels are no where near as hard as the retro ones.
Always been called crazy for having it as my favourite in the trilogy. Never understood the hate it gets. The levels are creative, graphics are outstanding, I actually quite liked the brother bears side quest and of course the music was on point too! Fantastic trilogy
There’s one thing i’ve noticed few years ago..
In the first DKC, you fight King K.Rool on a Ship.
In second game, you fight him in high tech (somewhat) airship (If you don’t count Real Final battle on lost world).
In Third game, you fight him in a castle.
So you fight KING in the 1st game, PIRATE in 2nd game, and SCIENTIST in 3rd game.
You fight a king on a pirate ship, a pirate in an airship and a scientist in a castle.

Standouts from Eveline: Treetop Rock, Forest Frenzy and Ice Cave Chant
Robin Beanland only did Funky's Fugue (it bops).
I should be noted though that he didn't directly work on the game. His composition was originally a Killer Instinct promotional track that got used for DKC instead.

Completing DKC3 105% was one of my favorite playthroughs of the whole trilogy. I feel DKC3 has such well-designed levels that going for those secrets without a guide is very doable, and is more in line with how the modern games treat hidden collectibles and bonuses. Going for full completion while playing in the hardest mode is a challenge, but a it's a fun one.
The comedy was on point in this video, every "FUCK" joke with the characters taking damaging had me on the floor laughing; I love DKC and the gameboy adaptations, great video!

Back in my school days, I'd bring my GBA along with DKC 1-3 just so I could plug in my headphones and listen to the soundtrack. Even on a GBA, the music was just that good.

Rare also wanted to study Gorilla's to see how they move so they could use that for reference while animating DK's running, but realize a proper Gorilla run wouldn't exactly work for their game, so they instead decided to use horses as a reference, hence why Donkey Kong's limbs go way farther out than they should while he runs.

As someone who grew up playing and loving this series of games, I'm glad you had such a good time with them. All I will say for the next game in the DK series is "Take your time with collecting all the things.".
Eveline Fischer also did great work on the first game too, including both level themes for the forest and ice worlds, the temple theme and the iconic world map theme.
People seem to forget that all the time. The amount of Fischer tracks that have been mislabeled on TH-cam as Wise tracks makes me sad. She's a great musician. Almost every track she made for the first game are amongst my favourites of that game.
So wild that these three games released on a yearly basis, especially given the arduous process of rendering its sprites. Really puts into perspective how much game development has ballooned in scope these days.

One of my earliest memories in gaming overall was playing the original DKC on a rented SNES as a little kid, then with the ZSNES emulator in the very early 2000's, and the sequels and their respective GBA ports followed suit years later (even owned the first 2 ports). And one of my first ventures into TH-cam was also looking up 101/2/5% video guides of the whole trilogy. Thanks to those old videos that might've long since been lost to time, I pretty much memorized the route to fully complete all 3 games. Anyway, the DKC games are lifelong staples which are always a blast to play and watch. And I hope Johnny also reviews the Retro Studios entries since they're also great. Also, the trilogy needs to also have a PC decompilation (just like SM64 and ALTTP) soon for them to have their own Render 96-like makeover and Jammin' Sam Miller's restored soundtrack.
Refreshing to see DKC3 getting some well deserved recognition.
As much as I love DK64, I can definitely see drunk Johnny making a return when he reviews it
Main problem I think it has is the bonus barrels and the repeating mini games. If half of those were just replaced with regular golden bannas instead of forcing you to do a stupid mini game after you already completed a puzzle or platforming challenge the path to 100% would be alot more enjoyable
I don't know, I never got why the game got THAT infamous for collecting...it's actually little compared to open world games or RPGs that take you forever to complete. DK64 can be completed in about 10-15 hours, that's not really that much by today's standards. Also, you don't HAVE to collect EVERYTHING...I always enjoyed the game.
Those graphics and music truly were mind boggling back then and still hold up all those years later. Crazy to think that all three games came out on the same console with DKC3 really pushing the limits of the SNES.
I can't wait for the Returns series. I love the Returns series so much and I legitimately believe they are some of the best platformers of the 21st century

Oh no, that ending felt like a teaser for the inevitable DK64 or I'm looking to hard into that thought lol. Anyways, I'm actually glad you enjoyed DKC3. I don't hear that a lot so that was shocking. I always say if you gonna play the DKC games, play the trilogy as a whole whenever someone asks me where to begin.

The Donkey Kong Country games has had such a long of enjoyment for me ever since I played them in the 90s. And the games are always great to up back in and replay over and over again. I feel that these games will still be fun to play in the future as well.

DKC3 is one of my favorite platformers ever so it’s really nice to see more people warming up to it over the years
The Donkey Kong Country trilogy was a great sendoff for the SNES, as it offered challenging platforming in each game, while also achieving the pinnacle of 2D gaming, could lay off on the overabundance of collecting stuff though.
I’m so very happy Johnny is doing this marathon because Donkey Kong is my favorite fictional character! 😁

This franchise is so dang good, I love all three games, 3 especially as that was my very first DKC game. Everything about this trilogy is perfect to me.
I feel the exact same way about DKC3. I didn't sit down and seriously play it till a few tears ago and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. That was right after a full play through of DKC2 which was a lot more frustrating than I remembered.
With 1000 comments, I’m sure someone’s already mentioned this, but in DKC2 there’s a secret you can do in the very first level that gives you every Kremkoin. I don’t think it counts towards your save file percentage, but it guarantees that you can play through the secret world. It’s great for repeat playthroughs.
I managed to play like the DKC series during after I've played Melee since it was when I started to experience the DK chars. Felt very happy after playing them
These are games that conjure vivid memories. I remember where I was when I first played them, who I was with, how I felt about things at the time. I don't just think about the fun I had with these games, but of times when surrounded by people I loved, and of those no longer here. That's why we say games are art because they can summon such an emotional response. Love these games, all of them. Good vid
I never really understood the name changes between the three, but there is something unique about K. Rool's personas that kind of comes full circle as of the third game. In the first, he starts out as King K. Rool, on the PIRATE ship Gangplank Galleon. ...but he's CAPTAIN K. Rool in the second, commanding from the Flying Kroc, which looks more appropriately suited to the likes of a mad scientist. But the third game, Baron K. Roolenstien is holed up in a castle...probably more fit for a King.
Pretty interesting if you think about it, in my opinion.
There's also a castle in DKC2 though so the circle is a bit wobbly.
Fun Fact: In Donkey Kong Country 1, you actually can kill enemies in the underwater levels. Though, you have to really go out of your way to do so. If you explode a DK barrel at the same time a killable enemy is aligned with it, you will kill that enemy in the process.
Incredibly niche useless, but I just thought it was funny to share.
DKC2 is one of my favorite games of all time. But I also really like DKC3, I honestly think it is a bit underrated, a lot of people talk of it as sort of a black sheep in the series. But the beauty of this trilogy is that it is so consistent and so good that there is a lot of division with which what game is on top and what is on the bottom. I would personally put DKC on the bottom or just about DKC returns if we count all country games.
As a side note, I do recommend giving the Donkey Kong Land series a try, they are of course watered down DKC games, but they all have mostly original level designs, even if a lot of repeated themes. And I think they are among the best platformers on the gameboy.
I remember growing up playing DKC when I was 6 and it was a lifetime experience for me playing it for the first time. To this day, it is still my favorite game. Donkey Kong was my favorite character to play as beside Diddy Kong. The levels and atmosphere of DK world were astounding. This game was Super Mario Bros of the 90s. Thanks for reviving my childhood memory of this game, Johnny.

I was at a video game music concert in Toronto a while back where a big band played a swing version of Jungle Hijinks. It was incredible. The water stage music, Aquatic Ambience, from DKC1 will forever be my favorite track though. It just takes me back to the weekends I played through the games with my best friend (who is sadly no longer among us) when we were little. I love these games so much. The only other game that comes close to tugging at my heart strings with its music like that is Secret of Mana.
Donkey Kong has the BEST video game music of all time, bar none!

My favorite music track from these games is Fear Factory from DKC1. It's dark, foreboding and really tense, but it has that beautiful, serene moment near the end where you can just take a little breather. It's nice.

Very glad that you decided to cover all three Donkey Kong Country games, Johnny. I really do believe all three of these games are some of the most solid platformers out there, each with their own charms despite building on the same formula as each other. This can be seen in thematic alone; Donkey Kong Country focuses more on the beauty of nature with a big emphasis on very natural looking environments, Donkey Kong Country 2 cuts loose a little and gets more cartoony but it does still have a pretty realism to it, Donkey Kong Country 3 is perhaps the most cartoony and zany of the three but it still feels grounded in reality. It balances a Herculean task of making the games look realistic and pretty, but not letting that get in the way of the fact that this is about some monkeys and gorillas grabbing bananas on their way to beat up an alligator that plays dress-up every game. I adore every facet of all three of these games...uh, aside from some frustrating levels like some of the Lost World levels in DKC2, the Krematoa levels in DKC3, and Lightning Lookout.

My favorite TH-camr reviewing my favorite game of all time. I've beaten DKC more times than I can count. DKC was the first game I can ever remember playing at 5 years old. DKC 2 and 3 took me 23 years to beat but I quite enjoy them all the same, but DKC 1 will always remain as my favorite video game of all time.
The DKC series is what got me into video games in the first place since they came out on the Super Nintendo. I was so excited to see this video. My favourite track is the one that plays is the haunted forest stage from DKC2. Listen to it a lot especially during the Halloween period.

These games were what my sister and I used to play when my mentally Ill mom sort of abandoned us for days at a time. Bittersweet memories. And the soundtrack is the best by far.

I adore Donkey Kong Country 2, I remember having a fun time with it on New 3DS. Heck, I completed it 102% on both the New 3DS and Switch.

3 is the best of the series imo, it feels right, sounds right, and has the best levels. 1 and 2 are great in their own ways but 3 always felt like a grand finale.

Donkey Kong Land 1, 2, and 3 on the Super Game Boy. Also the Game Boy Color, in the case of DKL3 in Japan. Those games are (mostly) original adventures, and definitely worth a quick video.
It's also worth mentioning that the Game Boy Advance port of Donkey Kong _Country_ 3 had its soundtrack completely replaced, for some reason.
Hell yeah, been waiting for this review forever! The first time I played DKC1 was on the GBC and thought it was fine, but then I played the SNES version and that was the one for me! I even got a physical copy of DKC2 a few years ago! The point is, Donkey Kong Country is one of my favourite childhood games, and I can't get enough of it!

It makes me happy to see clips from that VHS tape. I never owned the game, but I still have the tape, and I don't know how I got it. I remember watching it TO DEATH though.
I received an SNES very late into genesis’ life span and started with Donkey Kong 3 as my DK game because I had played the others with my cousin. And enjoyed it. The rocket level was my bane. Had to farm so many lives for that level.
These games are truly amazing, especially DKC 2. These will forever be some of my favourite platformers of all time.
I prefer DKC1's soundtrack, but Jib Jig from DKC2 is a fantastic song. One of my favorites.
Funnily enough, although you mentioned a "rule of three" you felt about the first DKC game, it's the second which literally has one! Each of the level themes in that game is used exactly three times apiece (so long as you cut out Animal Antics, which uses multiple tilesets, and the K. Rool fights). Three ship deck stages, three volcano stages, three mine cart stages, etc.
