one thing I remind myself of is we rarely know an idol's full sexuality. for example an idol may be bisexual but as it is easier to date the opposite gender, they may choose that. or they may run the gamut when it comes to types of love. they may feel romanic love for one gender more often while feeling sexual desire for another. it is so complicated, and as I appreciate their work and the overt representation, I do not support those who scream out queerbaiting charges as reasons to avoid their work. must we demand that idols out themselves? I don't like that.
this can be applied to anyone who isnt officially out and does queerbait-y stuff. that's not a proper way to distinguish queer baiting from actual representation
also during their reaction to the “seOul drift” MV, yoojung mentioned rei’s rainbow bag in the MV!! i just found it so fascinating that he talked about it.
I was about to be pressed for a second because I thought this was another one of those kpop yt channels who post their unwanted and 9 out of 10 times WRONG opinion (ik its an opinion but idc) as I didnt read your channel name at first lmao. OnlyOneOf has really created a very special safe place for the lgbtqia+ community, you cant even compare them to other groups support atp because of how in depth they are and how they are TRULY committed to giving others strength
i unfortunately do think it's a marketing scheme by 8d (although the devil's advocate would be why would they choose this theme in Korea where it is still extremely conservative and homophobic, however it should be noted that most consumption of bl-themes are by straight women) but i do genuinely believe the boys stand by the lgbtqia+ community and they embody 100% of the lore with involvement in production, choreo, etc... so therefore, i believe OOO members themselves are not queerbaiting, but i cannot confidently say that about the entertainment company itself.
OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONED THE HAPPY TOGETHER AND CHUNGKING EXPRESS REFERENCES :D As an avid Wong Kar Wai fan these were the first things I clocked when watching yoojung/kb's and Junji/rie's solos. Especially in begin the scene where Yoojung is behind the counter with his head on his arm next to the fan is extremely similar to a scene of faye wong in Chungking express. The setting of the cafe js also the exact same and the ending shot of the cafe where kb and yoojung inside seem to be moving in slow motion while the people outside are sped up is a reference as well! I also believe the dancing seen in junji and rie's mvs is a happy together reference as well du to the clothes being similar in the film. In a photo shoot a couple years ago there were Wong Kar Wai posters on the wall in the background and even a moonlight poster so I'm positive these references are purposeful. Anyway, I'm so glad to see you point these out as every single reaction I've seen of the music videos no one so far has noticed these references apart from you :)
its actually through their music that i realize i do hide a lot even though inside im mostly okay with myself. Im from a really small town on an island of 120k people so loneliness is nothing new for me. I wish to live authentically but its really hard :/ Its kinda crazy how their music resonates with me in such an organic way I haven't felt from other groups/artists (kpop or none kpop). On the surface their concept seems very in your face but it actually has some pretty interesting layers and details to it too. They have my full support cause it is so hard to do something different and not back away with it or feel burdened by it xx
I completely feel the same way about their music resonating with me vs other kpop groups. I don't like to use the word "queer" as it's used as a very hateful slur where i come from, but I've struggled with understanding my sexuality and just who i am for probably 15 years now. I've always felt like a weird person with a weird sense of humor, weird perspective on things, weird interests. It's difficult for me to be close with people because I am afraid if i let down my guard and just be myself, they will think I'm weird. OOO's music touches my heart in a way that other kpop groups don't even come close to. I think their music can be of comfort to anyone feeling alone and uncomfortable with themselves, even if it doesn't relate to sexual orientation or gender. Their music is really genuine and it's like being gently patted on the back and being told "it's ok". I hope they get the recognition they deserve one day.
As a LyOn cub, thank you for making this mini documentary. As a queer woman with a religious fiancé (who is also a woman), this band and the art they're producing means the WORLD to me. I initially fell in love with the music and the personalities of all the members before I understood the lore.. and now I just love them even more. They make me incredibly happy with their open and unapologetic acceptance of queer people even in the face of backlash. This representation is incredibly important and Kpop NEEDS a band like them. I also look forward to more of your content on them.
Lovely video, thank you! Even tho I've been a lyOn for like 1.5 years I still learn something new every time I watch a video about their lore. Honestly I think OnlyOneOf have the most interesting lore in kpop, at least from what I know about other groups - it's so raw and real, depicting the life and struggles of so many people irl, but it's all so subtle at the same time, that's why I had no idea about many many references that they've made. They are truly amazing and I hope they don't stop their journey to spread love for a long long time.
OnlyOneOf has been a tremendous positive influence on KPOP and music generally. It doesn't matter if they are gay themselves. "Queerbaiting" is normally defined as an abusive tactic by homophobes, who accuse people of being gay in order to incite hatred of them, or simply speaking abusively of LGBT people to express homophobia and harm them. OnlyOneOf certainly does not abuse LGBT people. Instead, it shows a groups of beautiful guys who express love and desire for one another as part of their artistry. If LGBT people like what OnlyOneOf does, if they admire their talent and beauty, their creativity and courage, great! I certainly do. But most LGBT people are not particularly "into" KPOP,and probably are unaware that OnlyOneOf even exists.
i just watched all of your content and i’m so grateful for these videos analyzing OnlyOneOf concept and their music. i’ve always been so annoyed when people accused them of queerbaiting, because it’s so stupid. real people cannot queerbait, and more importantly, the characters they depict are literally queer and in gay relationships. i guess the definition just flew over their heads because they wanted to ignore what OOO was doing. their music is so important to me as someone who loves singing and is in the LGBTQ+ community. i may be surrounded by people who accept me, i may be blessed, but it’s still so amazing and comforting to see a group get so much hate and criticism but push through and continue what they’re doing. their sound is so unique and brings something new to the music industry as a whole, not just kpop. they’re so brave for doing what they’re doing, and i don’t think people realize how stupid using queer representation as a cash grab is in korea. they wouldn’t be pushing these taboo topics if they didn’t actually care about them because of how conservative their country is. even other idols who are openly supportive haven’t gone as far as OnlyOneOf has. they’re the only group i’ve ever considered stanning, and the only group i would go to a concert for, the only group i genuinely care about. nobody is doing it like them.
Ugh. this analysis is making me dread Bump Up Business even more. That comic does no justice to anyone. You know it’s bad when paper has more depth than any of the story or it’s characters. Edit: it’s bc onlyoneof’s real story is so much better
I wasn't aware the teasers for Mono included quotes from the season 2 series of Skins (Nicholas Hoult!) - I only purchased the digital single and knew the guys were not much into the promotions due to the timing of Love's departure with the song's release. I wondered if their song skinz had an affinity to the series as I was huge fan of the U.K. series (only up to series 4); I'm glad to know there is a connection, if only indirectly.
WOW THANK YOU❤❤ I knowed about the skins quotes in mono teaser but i was not knowing the cobtexte of the quotes. IT MELT MY HEART. Thank you for the video😊
I love OnlyOneOf so much. I am a queer teen myself and their music is such a comfort, it destigmatize what ive been struggling with for all of those years and im really thankful i could find them and their songs I found them throught LibidO and liked the song a lot. I then found out about a group doing queer representation, so i listened, only to find out they were the one that made LibidO and that's how i started stanning them. They really helped me throught a lot and helped me throught my healing process, and im so glad that i found them. Thank you for making this video, seeing all those people saying they're queerbaiting makes me so angry because they obviously dont know what queerbaiting mean and are, most of the time, only h0m0ph0bic and dont wanna see queer representation in the kpop industry, an industry which is already pretty toxic and doesnt allow much liberty from their group and idols on such topic(s). I am so happy to see that our boys are gaining more and more popularity and recognition from kpop stans and im pretty sure it will open doors to more progress in the industry. And soon, we're even getting a lightstick!! Im so proud of them
haven't watched the full video yet but even if onlyoneof are "queerbaiting" idgaf cause they're giving young queer people like myself an outlet, a voice and a place of acceptance in contrast to a VERY large industry that's usually too scared to even touch these topics at a surface level. I would be surprised and maybe a little disappointed to find out no one in this group is actually queer (which seems unlikely tbh), but I would still appreciate what they do for all their lgbt fans around the world edit : watched the video and now I REALLY mean everything I just said❤
this is a great video!! ty for sharing your views about their concept, I completely agree with everything you said, onlyoneof are an incredible group and I have become so in love with them through what they are doing for kpop and for the queer community
Also I like that they used the phone booth and not just a cellphone or other thing to communicate because there is the whole “coming out of the closet”. So if you think like this there are lots of moments where they are inside, sometimes with the door opened, like an invitation for either they come out or someone to come in with them. Also the Phone booth has clear walls, it could also be an indication that people still can see you inside, either that be people who share that experience or people who deem it. I think that when people accuse them of queerbaiting is because they get just libido and forward and don’t look since the beginning. They have a lore and the queer experience is part of it. Loved the video!
thank you for another amazing vid! you're great and i really like your voice haha very soothing. im actually very emotional bc im so happy i found them. what i love abt ooo is that they represent so many people by their concept, mvs and storylines and speaks abt it so LOUDLY i mean that's incredibly. im so proud of them. its very refreshing to watch this topics in a kpop group ❤ i just love them so so much.
thank you so much for this video! it's a tricky situation because i understand where people are coming from. From an outside perspective many people saw , as you said, a group that just woke up one day and decided to be gay for 3 minutes to shoot an mv; and i think that actually would've been the case if they did that only for the libido mv, but the fact that they continued exploring this subject for about 7 mv's after libido (skinz, the solos and seoul drift) completely proves the point that they're not trying to catch some views and gain popularity through controversy. Also i'd like to believe in the boys's sincerity, but i wonder how they truly feel about having the "queerness" be a part of their concept; i wonder what their families and friends think about them portraying same gender relationships in a country as south korea who is still very reserved about those topics.
i have no reason to doubt their sincerity especially since the members are very involved with their work and seem to be comfortable with the concept. rie even said in an interview that the libido music video was inspired by a movie that kyubin had picked & the members all watched it together. not to mention yoojung genuinely being excited and pointing out rie's pride bag in seoul drift, and encouraging mill & nine while he was on set for the kiss scene in beyond, etc. they even helped a queer couple propose at one of their shows and junji cried, + all of the other interactions queer fans have had with them in person. i have also wondered what their families might think but they seem to be supportive and even attended their seoul concerts that they held a couple months ago.
I really like this! Thank you so much for the insight to it all!! Looking forward to more videos from you!! Love from a new subscriber and "lyOn cub". 😁❤
Back when libidO first dropped, I could totally understand why ppl thought OOO was queerbaiting, I mean, they had no previous history of anything like that. BUT, I'm glad they have shown pretty well through the solo projects and even seoul drift that they really are aiming for representation. Also I can't wait for Bump Up Business>
They might be queerbaiting perhaps, but I'd feel that way more if it was pushing lgbt theme in teasers but in mv was entirely different. They're all as a group set to be in a bl bump up business. Now they're a relatively, small group however, its still frowned upon or risky for kpop idols to be in bl let alone talk about or reference LGBTQA. As a gay Lyon with a dash of asexuality on the side, no other groups try to actively speak too me. Saying you support something and actually, supporting something are usually different. The only 4 groups that have spoken to me musically is ooo, shinee, a.c.e and stray kids. I follow a lot of groups all boy groups, but very few I'd considered myself a fan of speaking to me personally and making good music is different. I've been a kpop fan since, late 2nd gen until now and it hasn't changed for the few groups I'm a fan of even after 9 years so I'm happy for any group that supports my existence as a human I like to know where I stand so I'm not supporting wrong group.
Aren't they signing up for a Bl drama ? From what I know Bl dramas isn't a good representation of Lgbtq because most of it is just fanservice. I haven't watched any bl dramas btw.
