FORCED TO MAKE A MUSLIN: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

  • Hey, Hey, Hey !
I hope ALL is well with everyone. It was high time that I made a wrap dress with all of the inspiration from some of you with the recent release of Vogue 2000!
While I have nothing against muslins, I usually only make them out of necessity. Which...when something is done out of necessity, can work for or against you, only time can tell.
Have you ever been "forced" to make a musin? I know "forced" is such a strong word...but still, let me know! Thanks a bunch!
    Until next time,
    Take care!

You did a fabulous job. I do make muslins because of fit and fabric. I’m full busted and short waisted, so that makes for fitting challenges. Also it’s a trial run to practice skills I’ve never tackled before. On my table now is,
Charm Sewing School’s Lillian Jacket which is a ode to Lili Ann suits back in the day. Once I get the fit right, I plan on “coping”/“recreating” several of Lilli Ann suits. The details in those suits give me life so, a muslin gives me a chance to practice and make mistakes without wasting fabrics I would have used to make the final garment.

I agree with you. I feel l’m making it twice, HOWEVER, there have been numerous times that I wish I had. Especially when I have use fabric that I really liked. The fit hasn’t been an issue; I didn’t like the way I looked in the garment! For that reason i now make a wearable mulsin for certain patterns, not all patterns. I do it mainly for dress patterns. I’m only 5’2” with a “healthy “ mid section and some dress patterns I have made, I just didn’t like on me. But for those dresses I’m now reusing the fabric for something else, so all isn’t lost. By the way I love your channel, it’s informative and humorous at the same time 🌸

Thank you Sharon! “Informative and humorous at the same time” has always been the goal! 🙏🏾. We’re about the same height. Great idea to repurpose the fabric so that’ll all isn’t lost…cuz we sure don’t like to lose! 😜😎. Thanks for tuning in! Take care!

Hi Terri. I never have nor will I ever make a muslin for myself. Call me stubborn or stupid. Or a rogue. I just want to get to the fun part. When I sewed for others, I made muslins for them. But I learned to measure the pattern pieces, tissue fit and make adjustments. Like Stelly, I'm full busted and short waisted and usually make those adjustments before I start and then make a few tweaks as I go along. Of course, I've had a handful of uh-oh's (like my attempt at a corset earlier this year) but have I learned my lesson? Nope🥴.
As my mother used to say, "Every spoil is a style!" The corset is now a purse. So I venture forth with seam ripper in hand. LOL!!!
I love this pattern and you did a great job with it. Maybe a sling back shoe would work. In the Fall, it's going to look good with a pair of boots.

Thank you! Ausets! 😊. I am leaning more towards the idea of tissue fitting when I’m not forced to do a muslin. I too want to make a corset some day…and a purse. 😜🤓. Moms be knowing don’t they? ❤️ That’s the beauty of creating…some lessons we learn and some we don’t. 😎 It’s good to hear from you. Hope ALL is well! Thanks for stopping by! Take care!

I make muslins all the time, wearable muslins. The main reason is to test the fit. Secondary reason, to practice new procedures and sewing methods. Fortunately I have a muse that always takes whatever I sew. So the first make is always a wearable muslin... 😮😅😊

Hi. First time viewer. Haven't even got through your introduction and already agree with you. I don't like to make muslins. Time consuming, costs and who got time to make the dress twice. I have made a lot that fit right out the envelope but when I see vintage patterns that are not my size I always wonder if I do a muslin can I make the adjustments? Hhhmmm??? You are my exact measurements so I have to follow you to see what I can learn. Now back to the video. Oh by the way, you muslin is adorable on you.
Ok. I love your fabric and anybody that does not sew but that mentions the print upside down should just get the sideeye. I love how your dress came out and if you don't think you will make it again, maybe I can buy it from you (in my begging voice). I am not really a wrap dress girlie but the V2000 got me feeling left out and since I can't find in my stores and NOT paying the price online, maybe you are my saviour to try it out.

You did a great job on your dress muslin. I had the same pattern and gave it away years ago after making it once because when I sat down the dress skirt didn’t cover
me, it revealed everything because I’m pear shaped. If I had made a muslin perhaps I could have addressed that issue. Wish I had kept the pattern anyway. Didn’t know about muslins when I was younger.

It's wonderful to see another one of your videos. yes, I pretty much always make a muslin these days. I have to as I have a middle- aged body and pattern companies, commercial and independent don't really make patterns that fit our bodies right out of the package. Muslins are time consuming, BUT, once you get a really good fitting one, you can use parts of it to hack other patterns, and know beforehand that the sewn item will fit. I love that fabric of your muslin, and that dress is very very flattering on you. I can't understand why you plan not to make that dress again. What about in a denim or \warm knit jersey for winter. Either way, thanks for this video.

Waden! ☺️ Hope ALL is well! Thanks for sharing. “Once you’ve gotten a really good fit, use parts to hack other garments” is definitely an advantage that I’d not considered! 🤓. Guess I don’t make them enough but perhaps I need to start! Thank you. I just love this fabric too! The original plan was to eventually make the long one…but I didn’t say “never” so who knows? I could change my mind. 🤷🏽‍♀️😂. ALWAYS good to hear from you Waden! Take care! 😎

So gud to see you Terry. The muslin looks gud 👍🏿. I make muslins when I have time. I pick out 2 fabrics for the garment in question. The final fabric and a fabric I would like the garment in, but not precious to me. Sandals would look nice. I like peep toe something with minimum foot exposure. Hubby thinks I am silly cuz I am doing pedicures all sumner long. Just me. IT FEELS GOOD 😊
