    Actually, I believe you've heard Scott sing even lower...it was he who picked up the bass line in Hallelujah when Avi sang that second verse. He has amazing versatility and a very, very wide range. I had to chuckle when I saw you get the goose bumps with Scott's final verse...I've seen this video probably 100 times, and it does that to me too...every single time.

      Imagine being the arranger of these expert vocalists! Get them to individually sing it through their way, notate each one. Merge the notations together, then after their first run-through ask Kirsten "so on the 3rd and 4th beats of the fifth bar of the second chorus, could you add a pullout from the harmony and drop 3 semi-tones?" A chuckle runs round the group because they know she was planning to cook Easter dinner but she just nods, grins and kicks Mitch lightly in the shin under the desk. He responds with a dramatic Shakespearean death scene, winds up on his back on the floor with Kirsten on top beating him mercifully with open fists and a big grin.

    You're kind of right in that "we don't get that much from them" with Matt going to bass there. Even with Avi, Pentatonix is way more sparing it putting in low and high notes. They do it for sure, and to great effect, but way less than the other big acapella groups. Which is honestly one of the reasons I personally prefer them to the other groups. The other groups tend to pull me out of the performance with too high or low notes or different shown off techniques. Still very impressive and I get why other people might love it. But personally I'm very fond of Pentatonix very intentional use of tricks and moments, leaving space for an easy listening experience while still being kind of "undercover technically impressive" at points.

    • @grischad20
      @grischad20 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i disagree, pentatonix just tends to shines on the high register with mitch more so than the low one. whereas a voiceplay or a home free will leave some place for the bass to bass, pentatonix gets their umph with higher notes than either of the other groups (i'm not even counting Kirstin) but they're just as showy with their technically impressive stuff
      It also kinda makes sense, out of the 3 they're the only group with a very high tenor and a woman, a big drop would be that much bigger since they hold the line higher

    • @kayecastleman6353
      @kayecastleman6353 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree with you. Pentatonix tends to play a cooler game, holding their best cards for those spectacular moments when they are most impactful, and often sliding them in where you might miss them if you aren't paying attention. I think a lot of that comes from the broad range of musical training Kevin and Avi had at the get-go, plus the genius of Ben Bram, of course. If you watch their early performances on the Sing-Off, they're really all over the place trying to show off everyone's talent. It didn't take them long to sort out the 'less is more' principle, and now we wait expectantly for those exquisite displays of unique skill they slide into a masterfully crafted arrangement. The low bass notes don't ring my bell like Mitch or Kirstie's highs, but they do make my belly tremble, just a little! 🙂

    • @PtxXtp
      @PtxXtp ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grischad20 I agree with Rebecca. You tend to see home free and voiceplay using their highest of the highs and lowest of the lows almost as a show off moment where as Ptx uses them more sparingly and where it will highlight the music. Ptx may come across as highlighting the highs more but part of it is that’s Mitch’s natural singing voice. Usually singing in same octave as Kirstie. Where tenors in the other groups can hit the notes but it’s not their main register. They have lower speaking voices where Mitch’s is naturally higher resulting in a higher placement when he sings.

    It's good to see Scott getting some love. Most reactors are so enamoured with Mitch because he's a novelty, a guy with the vocal range of a female who sings brilliantly and Avi or Matt because bass is so sexy, Kevin because it's like he swallowed a drum kit, Scott and Kirsten often get overlooked a bit.

You’re right (of course you are) that Scott has tremendous range. He released his first solo recently, called Mars, in which his range is totally on exhibit. If you decide to react to it, you may want to include the teaser he released just beforehand. It’s an a capella snippet of the song that shows what a vocal beast he is. Scott is a baritone that has a w i d e range to his voice. Pentatonix states that they do not produce music that they cannot perform live with the same sound. When Avi would take the lead, Scott would cover the base line, he also does it when Matt takes the lead.

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a general rule, all five of them will participate when they're arranging, but the primary arranger is usually Ben Bram, sometimes known as "the sixth member of Pentatonix." If there's a dispute I believe that Ben's judgment is the one they're most likely to depend on. Each member knows his or her voice best, so it's important for each member to be consulted, especially on that member's solos.
    There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. When it's an original song the primary arranger will be the composer, for instance.

    I love your analysis and the way you break it down. You're knowledge is much appreciated too. I also love your earrings.
    As others have noted, Scott takes over for Matt with the bass line but I think he's keeping it just a tad higher than when Matt has it. However, in Hallelujah, he takes the bassline from Avi when Avi has lead, and I'm sure it's lower there. I think most people don't even realise that it's not Avi and assume that it's layered, but Scott's bassline notes have a slightly..."scott-like" quality to them, I can't quite describe it but I can usually pick out when it's him (not least because when it shows you him he looks like he's not singing but he's moving his hands as if he is lol); I guess perhaps his bass isn't as dark or rich as Avi (or Matt's), which isn't surprising considering he's a baritone, and that he can hit some wild high notes still (You should react to their version of Ariane Grande's Problem, they have a studio version or a live version that I think was recorded on a radio show) .
    Scott also has a solo song Mars, that came out in the last couple of months which shows his voice has matured and there's a snippet he did singing it a capella in a kind of concrete bunker or something and his range that he shows off then was wild. I would also love to see your reaction to an older video he recorded of "I Should Tell Ya Momma On You" (I think you'd have to get it from someone else's reupload as he privated all the old stuff when he launched Mars, sadly. It also think it'd be super interesting for you to go right back to their performances on The Sing-Off to see how they've all changed & improved.
    Also, Mitch & Scott singing together as Sup3rfruit is so much fun, and of course, easier to hear which of them is doing what. You might enjoy their Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 + 2, and their Frozen medley (recorded with Kirstie, they were all aa little tipsy apparently) among others.

    Hopefully you will get to their Can You Feel The Love Tonight from The Lion King. That's another one where they keep upping the level through the whole thing.

    Be sure to listen to their "Wizard of Ahhhs" with Todrick Hall - it is a ton of fun. Also Daft Punk (won their first Grammy) and/or 90's Dance Medley.

    If you watch more, especially if you do live performances, you’ll note that Scott sometimes harmonizes at the top or near the top. Aha is a good example of this.

    Great reaction , as always, with lots of useful vocal information. I don't think you mentioned it, but I'm always interested in Kirstie's 'tight' vibrato - it's such a short gap between the notes, which I think is quite unusual? Are you going to see them live in May in London? I can't wait - I've been a Pentaholic since their 'Sing-off' days in 2011 but haven't ever made it to any of their UK concerts before. From the live stuff I've seen on TH-cam, though, it should be fantastic!

    Thanks Michelle32855, the group never stop to improve but as you're pointed out, nobody seems to notice Scott' base line , which not only add to the group but give him a new stance

    Love your videos and reactions! One technical thing though, and it only seems to happen with your channel, I get a lot of audio popping throughout each of your videos for some reason. Not sure if it's an equipment thing on your end or an issue when you render and upload, but it happens on almost every one of them. I would think it was something on my end if it happened with any other channel, but it doesn't. Thought you should know. Again, love the channel!

    they arranged it themselves. Scott does the initial just to get it started the all five sit and work it out.. all 5 deconstruct then reconstruct all covers. originals are a bit different process.

  • @jonadabtheunsightly

    Of the singers in the three major small-ensemble acapella groups (VP, HF, PTX), I am pretty sure Mitch's range goes the highest by a fair margin. If you want to hear a voice that goes higher than his, check out Voctave: they've got a world-class soprano-1. (They pretty much have to have one, because they do the kinds of arrangements that have multiple soprano parts, multiple alto parts, and so on down to multiple bass parts. They're more like a classical choir than the aforementioned groups.)
    And no, PTX doesn't do the "soloist traverses four octaves in two measures" thing nearly as often as e.g. VP. Several of them do have the range for it, so I guess their arranger just doesn't like that trick as much, or something. I don't know who arranged this song; it's possible that it may have been several of them working together; they're on record saying that they do that sometimes: sit or stand around together trying out various things they can do with a song until they settle on an arrangement they like. Would be cool to be a fly on that wall.

    Jenn, this was long overdue! What took you so long? And what else have you missed out of PTX? I highly recommend „The Prayer“, „Shallow“ and „Havanna“ and maybe their original „Coffee in bed“. And for Christmas: Have you reacted to „Mary did you know?“(This is definitely one of their top 5 songs!)
