    I knew you were gonna be floored by Mitch's part after your reaction to Kirstens. Hes almost not human.

    • @wendischambach6181
      @wendischambach6181 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      And what always amazes me (this time was no exception) is that Mitch sings the same note as Kirstie. Not an octave lower. THE SAME NOTE. What a talented way to use a God-given gift to its fullest. Their arrangements are wonderful display cases of what you can do when you are very good at your craft.

    Scott covering the bass when Avi is taking the lead is always a wonderful surprise (not really a surprise)! Thanks for reacting to this one!

  • @mrbrianc
    @mrbrianc ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Scott being able to sing his opening solo part, and then easily step in to cover the bass line while Avi solos is so awesome.

  • @risperdude
    @risperdude ปีที่แล้ว +89

    Something that always hits me but no one really comments on (because of Kirstin's breathtaking performance) is Scott's BG vocals during her solo somehow hit so hard yet are so subtle the contrast buoy's her lead so beautifully. Their arrangement is just so very (I guess, I don't have the words) beyond description.
    Plus, Avi's performance simply makes me weep, admittedly I do cry easily with beautiful music, every note Avi hits just echo's in my soul. When he comes is under Mitch, and on through the wall of sound, just draws out all the emotions.

    • @Naggie_
      @Naggie_ ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The backing vocals are incredible in this. And speaking of Avi, his massive baseline during Scott's solo part continues during Avi's solo part, but it's continued by Scott. That handoff between Avi and Scott is seamless. And they do it live as well, so it's not Avi doubling himself. I'm amazed on how Scott can do the emotional solo line and then just suddenly drop into Avi's territory as a backing vocal. Incredible vocal range and agility :)

    This video was my first exposure to PTX and I was immediately hooked. As a Canadian, this song has always held a special place in my heart. Not only is it amazing in its own right, but was written by a Canadian. I never in a million years thought I'd hear anyone do it as well as k d lang. This was different, but easily as good. Thank you, Jen for this reaction!

    • @myramegill7293
      @myramegill7293 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes!! k.d. lang's performance was breathtaking as well. She left it all out there on the stage. It is a masterpiece.
      And PTX have crafted their own masterpiece with this arrangement as well.

    Kirsten sang with ever increasing emotion, which peaked near the end of her solo. It seemed to me as though her voice would crack from the intensity of her feelings. But not only was there no break but she sang the finale of her solo with heartbreaking clarity and smoothness. Stunning.

    Probably my favorite Pentatonix cover, although there are several close seconds. What a nice surprise to see this reaction today! Great reaction and analysis. ❤
    I see that several others in the comments have suggested the Pentatonix cover of Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone. I completely agree! Amazing Grace, a beautifully written hymn with an incredible story behind it’s origins, combined with the newer worship song My Chains Are Gone, with these five voices is just stunning.

    In the spirit of a capella fan boying, I am a Home Free guy. However to my untrained ear and easily impressed eye, this cover of Hallaleujuah is the gold standard of a capella group videos (followed not that closely by HF's Thinking Out Loud/Let's Get it On).

    When I say I've listened to this version several hundred times, it's no exaggeration. I get chills, and full fledged shivers in this one and also in their Amazing Grace(My Chains Are Gone) videos. Generally speaking my favorite a capella group is Home Free, but that's not to take anything away from Pentatonix or Voice Play. They each have such talent and certain songs that just gut punch you they're so good. As usual, loved your breakdown! ❤

    Each of the big three A Capella groups (PTX, Home Free, VoicePlay) seems to have a "signature" song that identifies and shows their greatness. To me, this is the PTX "signature" song. It doesn't matter that I've heard this song at least a 100 times, or that I was a part of a performance featuring this song, I never fail to get goosebumps and an intense emotional reaction. This performance is almost a religious experience.

    • @KitKatyKath

      Which would be Home Free's and VoicePlay's signature song to you?

    • @Linda-zf2ps
      @Linda-zf2ps ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KitKatyKath Home Free...Ring of Fire, though Man of Constant Sorrow is really close. They won their national contest with it, and it shows a lot of what the group can do without over-featuring any one member. VoicePlay...without any "featuring" I'd say "Oogie Boogie Song" though that does let Geoff outshine the group. With a guest, I'll say "Hoist the Colors". My favs are an entirely different matter: PTX - I absolutely love "Mary did you Know". Home Free - Got to be "American Pie". VoicePlay - "Dream On"

I've always - since I can remember - held a very deep appreciation for beautifully composed/arranged/performed music but the way you break things down is, I feel, only deepening that appreciation even further. I find it AMAZING that you've never audited this song before on your channel. I try to listen to almost every reaction to it someone posts, and you're one of my favorite reactors, so I was delighted to find this posted and to see that it was TODAY that you posted it. You're a real joy to watch, both because of your in depth analysis AND your marvelous sense of humor.
    I can't remember who it was, but there was one reactor who was so bad I shut his video down after 3 minutes - he literally complained that he didn't like them because they were "too good." One of the other commenters amused me by posting that it was the "most unique criticism" he'd ever read about them. And no, that wasn't his only negative remark. I simply posted that if he disliked this video, then I couldn't imagine him watching anything I would like and good luck with his channel but sayonara.
    Looking over your catalog, I am frankly astonished to find only FOUR Pentatonix videos in the mix. But you have 18 VoicePlay and 19 Home Free, along with seven just for Geoff (though his playlist shows six, your "reactions" collection includes seven). I love all three groups pretty much equally, though I'm not particularly a country music fan so Home Free comes in third.
    So, since you like Halloween, I'd like to recommend you react to Pentatonix performing "Making Christmas" (from "The Nightmare Before Christmas." VP has done a number of covers from this movie which are great, but the PTX cover is just fabulous, PLUS it displays a sense of humor that they don't often get to show. And Mitch's "evil laugh" is worth the price of admission, all by itself. (p.s., if you're one of those who've never seen the movie, please do before you react to make it more enjoyable for you. One recent reactor had no clue what was going on and it rather spoiled his reaction. He was too bewildered to enjoy the music, even.)

His bass line was so critical in the final "wall of sound" chorus, I was hoping you would break that down for us, but I get that there's always so much going on in a Pentatonix video, it's hard to get to it all. Jennifer! Yes this one is one of my favorite Pentatonix covers, though honestly if you wanted to do another week and focus on one artist/group you could find plenty of good Pentatonix candidates to react to. Pentatonix was my first exposure to true a cappella groups and it's been a lovely ride through them and the others ever since. A test! I knew you were going to test us one day! 😁 I might have partially passed, partially failed 😬 but it just means I need to watch even more Jennifer videos to get it down. They did different things with the word "hallelujah" in this one. Early on the lead would sing "halle" and then be joined chorally by the rest on "lujah". Then later as you point out there is the overlapping call/response effect. Just so many artistic details they build into their music that makes it so rich and ... uh ... yummy to listen to. Great reaction/analysis as always Jen! 😊

    The amazing thing to me is the complexity of these arrangements and how perfectly each of them tuned the chords. Each verse is its own arrangement to allow for the different members singing the lead. Likewise, each chorus is a distinct arrangement, each with its own beauty.
    Mitch knows how to rip the heart out of your chest and then rebuild a better version of yourself.

    Shortly before he passed, Leonard Cohen the gentleman who wrote the song, heard Pentatonix's cover of Hallelujah. He said it was the best cover of his song he had ever heard.. to date they have 683 million views.
    There is a live version of Hallelujah from their concert at the Hollywood Bowl on September 29th. I got to go to the concert in it was magical. So that would be the most current version of Hallelujah. I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction

    You mentioned belting, and I have to say that Kirsten may be one of the best belters I have heard in my life. And while we are on bests. I don't think I have ever heard a better beat box artist than Kevin. But that is, of course, just my opinion.

    This video was shot on the Utah Salt Flats at sunset, so they had to be freezing- not sure how many takes, but it wouldn't have mattered- it's always cold up there.

    As a subscriber, I have listened to a TON of your reactions. I didn't realize you hadn't reacted to PTX's biggest song ever! You are perfectly welcome to be 'late to the party!' As always, your reactions teach me stuff! As many times as you have reacted to PTX, you experienced a serious Mitch Slap in this! Great reaction!

    Love this song so much. Please react to Scott’s debut single as a solo artist. It’s called Mars. It’s absolutely stunning.

    If you have a bit of time, listen to the part from 9:34 all the way up, and focus on the backsinging instead of Kirsty. It's incredible what they do to support her on the rise up. It's the best part in my opinion, because the first few times you don't really hear it - but they are really doing SO much, to support the effect that her rise has. Like, the final: On the "it's a cold and it's a..." they sing a low rising phrase, then the "...broken..." - and on that broken, almost an inversion takes place! they ALL go up with their voices in that gap, changing the tone and bringing the final effect up to 1000x - "...hallelujah!" SO much happens during those few seconds, I can't believe it!

      Generally, the song "Hallelujah" is different in that aspect. Of course, I always hear all the harmonies and backings, but in "Hallelujah", I really had to go back a lot of times after I already knew the solos (that are of course at the front), and understand what happens here. What the others are doing is SO complex! During Mitch's part too! I find it so incredible, that those aren't just background harmonies, but they match so perfectly and individually, note by note, to the front singer in that moment. I haven't seen that on that level in any other song.

      Yeah - at 18:31 you can hear it: They're doing exactly the same thing with Mitch again. "it's a cold and it's a..." - low rise - "...broken..." there that what I feel like an "inversion effect" happens, they're all going up - "...Hallelujah!" has the maximum effect, with the slight dissonance.

    As usual, you have really provided a on point analysis for a great song. You were right to say this has been around a while - a Pentatonix classic if you were to ask me... Many others have reacted to this and I would encourage you to check out The Fairy Voice Mother as one of the best analysis. I think your effort definitely matches hers. Also, there is an Italian guy named Roberto delli Carri who also provided a great analysis. I encourage you to check them out, but I also don't want it to seem that I didn't appreciate yours (as I've already said) because one of the reasons I am a subscriber and continually come back to you is the excellent vocal breakdown you always provide. Love what you do Jen, please keep it up!

    Like so many this song was my introduction to ptx. And I heard it first before I saw the video so I was shocked to discover mitch was a dude. He is absolutely my fave ptx singer. This is also one of my favorite songs from way before Shrek. So many think it's religious when it so is not and that's what drew me at first. No offense to the other acapella groups out there like home free but to me there's every other group here and ptx way above on their own level. There just isn't anyone that even remotely touches them in my opinion. And considering they're by far the most popular and most decorated and the reason acapella is in the main stream now, id say all other acapella groups owes them a thank u bc doubtful none would have had half the success they do without these guys paving the way.
