Arguably the most successful acapella group in history. Three Grammys, millions of albums, sold-out tours, and billions of views on TH-cam… and they’re the first acapella group to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (set for Spring 2023!). Billboard magazine said, “Pentatonix (PTX) has succeeded doing what no other acapella group has ever done: making acapella mainstream.”

Yeah i know i am late to this but they are the most successful acapella group by a large amount, people will obvious have others they like the style more, but cant really argue the facts that ptx are and probably will be the only acapella group for a very long time to accomplish all those things.

Scott, Mitch and Kirsten did just happen to be friends -- they grew up together in Texas:)
They added on Avi (replaced by Matt in this video), and fab beatboxer Kevin for the Sing Off.
I'll leave it to others to introduce the PTX members and lay out their history.

"It's like the world picked the best singers in the world and put them together" that's pretty much PTX.
Can you believe that Scott, Kirstin and Mitch met in High School? What are the odds that those three amazing voices attend the same school? It's just crazy unbelievable to me. It's like a lightning hitting a tree three times in a row.

This an A capella group which means no instruments. The tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone; the girl is Kirsten Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano; the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi, Counter-Tenor; the guy with the white jacket is Matt Sallee, Basso-Profundo, and the Beatboxer is Kevin Olusola, Tenor/Cellist/Cellist-Beatboxer. Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch met in a high school in Arlington, TX (between Dallas and Ft. Worth, TX). After graduation, they went to different colleges and majored in music. They came together again for a TV singing competition called "Sing-Off," but, a 5-person group was required. Kevin and Matt came on board by referrals. Penta is Latin for 5, Tonix means tones, sooo, 5Tones = Penta tonix, affectionally known as PTX. Listen to their version of "Hallelujah" They are the Best.

So glad you enjoyed Pentatonix. We "Pentaholics" will always have suggestions for your next reaction. Mine is their famous "Hallelujah," first their official video then their live recording from a Christmas concert. I think it's an excellent place to start and allows you to compare their studio and live versions, which showcase both their talent as well as their authenticity. Looking forward to more of your PTX reactions!

So happy that you enjoyed this! I hope you go down the Pentatonix Rabbit Hole! Their catalog is never ending, and they never miss!
Some background: The bass singer, Matt Sallee, (in the white coat) joined the group in 2017, and he replaced the original bass singer, Avi Kaplan. The videos linked below also include earlier days, which feature Avi Kaplan, so I just wanted to point it out, as it sometimes confuses folks.
The other 4 members have remained constant....Scott Hoying (tall blonde guy), Mitch Grassi (the guy with the mullet - he changes his look often), Kirstie Maldonado (she changes her hair color often), and Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer).
Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch have been singing together since high school, and they added Kevin and Avi when they competed on the 3rd Season of "The Sing Off" in 2011.
Also - just so you know... whenever the bass singer (Matt or Avi) sings a lead verse, Scott Hoying (tall blonde guy) takes over the bass line until they're done.

What a lovely reaction! I have a feeling that they've pulled another one down the rabbit hole! Arent they just amazing? Over a decade of extreme talent but also great humans! • @dawnpatterson8708
    @dawnpatterson8708 ปีที่แล้ว +54

This was great. A genuine reaction is wonderful to see.
A bit of history. The middle three went to high school together. They wanted to be on a competition show called The Sing Off. But, the group needed to have at least five members. So, they added a bass Avi and a vocal percussionist (not sure on the spelling)
They won $200,000 and a recording contract. They moved to LA and a week later they were dropped by the company.
They took the money and started making youtube videos. The rest as they say, is history.
In 2017, Avi left the group. They had gotten too big way too fast. He was missing his family.
At that point, they brought in Matt.
    From left to right,
Matt, Kirstie (sounds like thirsty), Scott, Mitch and Kevin.
They have an amazing catalog of videos.
Now is the perfect time to get into them.
They have won 3 Grammys. One of them for a Christmas album.
I would suggest, Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody Amazing Grace, The Prayer, Daft Punk.
Plus, if you want a fun one to start the holiday season. Go with Mr. Grinch.
That should give you a bit to go on.
Thanks again for your time and appreciation for this group and the magic that they create.
Btw 1st time viewer and an instant subscriber.
Will be here waiting for your next step down the PTX rabbit hole.
Hope and joy to you and your family.

Forgot to say that they have amazing originals: Love Again, Coffee in Bed, Happy Now, See Through (no mv only audio) and Water for just a start. All are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. As others have said, the 3 middle singers were high school friends. Then when they wanted to try out for a singing show right after high school, they added a bass (Avi, not Matt who is in this one) and Kevin just a few days before the show started because they needed more people to be in the competition. Kevin had already been accepted to medical school (Harvard? can’t remember), but decided to do the show instead. Yes, it’s a miracle that the original 5 (and now these 5) found each other and formed a one-of-a-kind music group.

Those "guitar sound notes" are called arpeggio notes or bell tones and Pentatonix excels at doing them...they use them in other songs as well. There are times when instruments are used in their music and you'll see the instrument in the video...they don't hide it. Most of the time it's Kevin the beatboxer playing his cello, Beyonce, WHILE beatboxing...he sort of invented that and calls it celloboxing.
I hope you continue to explore this group...they're remarkable and have been together for 11 years now so have a 200+ library of music for you to explore...both covers and originals. I subbed in the hope that you will continue down this rabbithole.

    Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The members are
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
    Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer);
    Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale);
Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.

They have had just one change in their 11+years together - Avi Kaplan left in 2017 amicably. Matt, the bass on the left joined the group shortly after. Next to Matt Sallee is Kirstin (Kirsty, rhymes with thirsty), who sings everything from alto to soprano. The blond in the middle is Scott, the baritone, but he has a wide range with great lows and highs. Mitch is the one with the mullet. He's a counter tenor and sings extremely high. The beatboxer on the end is Kevin Olusola. He's not just a beatboxer, though. He has a beautiful high tenor voice as well and plays the cello, having invented cello-boxing where he beatboxes while playing the cello. He plays multiple instruments and plays his cello "Beyonce" in some of their songs (always a treat). Mitch and Kirsty change their look A LOT. if you see a woman in the group it is always Kirsty (unless there are two women, then they've got a guest artist). If you see a dark haired man(or purple or other color) who's singing high, it's always Mitch.

Most of the stuff you asked has been covered already, but I'll add just a bit -
PTX has been together 11 years now, but I think you'll be surprised at how very good they were right out of the gate. There are videos of "the trio" (middle three) singing together in high school... a capella arrangements of pop songs they put together themselves... that should blow your mind.
I'm impressed, this is not usually a song people pick up on Mitch during. His (high) voice is amazing and you've barely touched the surface.
PTX have around 40 original songs. It's only a fraction of their work, since they're at around 300 songs... but they're nothing to sneeze at. They sprinkle originals into every release, but their first originals album debuted at #1 on the top 200 Billboard in 2015. Their second originals album was sadly released during the pandemic so wasn't very well promoted. It's a sin they don't get radio play outside of the Christmas music.

I found your reaction informed and interesting. Like you, I have trouble believing that a group of 5 could have 5 brilliant singers who can do solos and harmonise as the song requires. The beatboxer, Kevin, also has a lovely voice.
They can also cover an incredible range of genres. Try Hallelujah, Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody or more recently (after the bass Avi left and was replaced by Matt who was the guy in the white jacket), Mad World, The Prayer, I Just Called To Say I Love You, or Prayers For The World.

They have a few rare songs that have an instrument, usually the beatboxer on cello but also a couple with piano. Just remember that they are always up front about it if there's something that's not considered 100% a cappella. For instance, 1 of their medley videos, 90s Dance Medley, has a few songs including Cher's Believe which featured the new concept of using autotune as an effect rather than fixing off key singing. So they did tell fans ahead of time that the official version has autotune effects added in few certain spots because the songs just wouldn't have the desired effect without them. The rule they adhere to so no one claims any tomfoolery is if there's an instrument other than use of a stomp pad that has a recorded live stomping- still no instruments or electronically created sounds, then you see it happening in the video.
They have such amazing covers that people have started calling them "upgrades", & they have many originals too. Multiple Christmas albums, that's a whole thing in itself! Then the blonde guy Scott & the high-voiced guy Mitch have some duo stuff that's not a cappella (an entire album of originals & some covers, medleys & just for fun stuff on a youtube channel) under the name Superfruit. It was just a side project for a while, but fans hope for more at a later time. They are just so busy with PTX & other side projects. They all, including the original bass, have solo stuff & fun collabs here & there. Prepare to be bombarded with suggestions! PTX isn't 1 rabbit hole, but 9 combined!! 😂

"Hallelujah" is probably a great song to do next, not just because it's a great song, but it has the previous base whose name was Avi, and it really showcases everyone's strengths. Or "Bohemian Rhapsody".
There are a few songs they do with instruments, but there only a handful and if there is you'll see it. The beat-boxer, Kevin, can play the cello so there are a few with him playing the cello. The song that I discovered them was when they did a collaboration with Lindsey Stirling on "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons.
They got their big break on the "Sing Off"
From left to right: Matt (base), Kirstin or Kirsty (mezzo soprano), Scott (baritone), Mitch (tenor), Kevin (beat-boxer), Avi was the original base.

Oh my gosh! If you think Mitch (with the mullet) sang high in this, you must react to The Prayer. This was Mitch's mid range. Lots of suggestions already, but also, if you like rap, these guys can rap, too. Try their performance of their original music in the Popspring concert they did in Japan. You get to see them live (as good as their studio sound) and a great cross section of their style.

Body percussion is part of a capella. PTX has been together for 12 years now, after winning the third season of The Sing-Off in 2011, an a capella competition on NBC television. The 3 singers in the middle grew up together in Arlington, Texas and sang as "The Trio" through high school. While in college baritone Scott Hoying (the blond guy at the beginning) got the group (mezzo-soprano Kirstin Maldonado and tenor Mitch Grassi) back together in an attempt to audition for the competition. Finding that groups had to consist of at least 5 members to qualify, Scott found Kevin Olusola (beatboxer, cellist) from a TH-cam video that had gone viral and bass singer Avi Kaplan, through a friend. They all met in person the day before the audition for the show. Avi departed the group in 2017 (He now does solo work.) and was replaced by Matt Sallee. The group has won 3 Grammy Awards and sell out venues across the world.

On RARE occasions, they use musical instruments as accompaniment. Kevin (beatboxer) is a master cellist. So he plays on some songs. They’ve done some songs with violinist Lindsey Stirling, when there is cello and violin accompaniment. The single “Thank You” (written by the tall blonde singer (Scott) with his now fiancé, Marc, has Scott playing piano. And their latest single from their new Christmas album, “Prayers for this World” has string accompaniment!

Welcome aboard, new subscriber, here for all the Pentatonix you care to feature. Can you imagine the delight of the high school choir teacher who had the middle three in class all at the same time? You called them impeccable during your reaction, and I wholeheartedly agree. For the anthems, try Hallelujah, Can You Feel the Love Tonight and their most recent single, a Diane Warren song called Prayers for This World. For fun, check out Come Along, Making Christmas and Can’t Hold Us. For more chills, you can listen to Say Something, Imagine and Amazing Grace. For Grammy winners, try their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Jolene with Dolly Parton. For Christmas, any title that catches your eye will be exceptional. Looking forward to more PTX! Peace from Ohio …

Pentatonix generally does a capella but they have used instruments. Kevin, the beatboxer also has played the cello in a few tracks and Scott, the tall guy in the middle played piano in a track, but the instruments are clearly shown in the music videos. Kevin emulates the stomping he would do on a stomping pad while on stage. I've been to a concert of theirs and they are amazing live!

The backstory on Pentatonix goes like this (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I get anything wrong).
Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch all grew up in Arlington Texas. Kirstie met Mitch when she was 8, and they became good friends. Scott met Mitch when Scott was 8, and they became good friends. Kirstie met Scott when she was 14, and they became good friends.
They all went to the same high school, with Scott and Kirstie in the same class and Mitch one year behind them, and were all involved in choir, as well as some community theater performances. The three of them formed a trio (imaginatively named "The Trio" - they've gotten better with names since) that performed with their high school choir and occasionally on local television - there are still a few videos floating around on TH-cam. For this reason, Mitch, Scott, and Kirstin are still known as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix.
Scott and Kirstin graduated in 2010 and went to college for a year, waiting for Mitch to graduate. Then in 2011, when Mitch graduated, Scott talked the other two into going to L.A. to appear on _The Sing-Off,_ a competition show for a capella groups, which was going into its third season. First prize for winning _The Sing-Off_ was a recording contract from Sony. But the minimum size band allowed on the show was five members, so they needed to find more members. Ben Bram, a friend of Scott's, suggested that they'd do well to get a bass and a beatboxer; and mentioned a bass he knew who was active in the amateur a capella community, named Avi Kaplan, so they got in touch with Avi and he agreed to join them. Then they searched TH-cam for a good beatboxer and happened on Kevin's celloboxing videos, got in touch with him, and he agreed to join them as well. They decided to call their band Pentatonix, after the pentatonic scale, a scale with five notes (a band with five members), any one of which can be the tonic or root note of a melody (any one of whom can be the lead singer).
Mitch had to skip his high school graduation ceremony in order to audition for _The Sing-Off,_ but they made it onto the show. You can find videos of all their performances on the show online; they range from songs with good singing and awful dancing to a couple of absolutely stunning arrangements and renditions of popular songs; I'm thinking specifically of their "Master Mix" of "Forget You" and "Since U Been Gone" (their 11th performance) and "Dog Days Are Over" (their 12th performance), which featured the first Mitch-slap ever and turned one of the judges, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, into the very first pentaholic.
They won the third season of _The Sing-Off,_ complete with recording contract, and one week later Epic Records (the specific Sony Label the contract was with) dropped them, saying that they didn't know how to market a capella groups. So Pentatonix hunkered down. They recorded themselves with cell phones, anywhere they could find good acoustics. They lived frugally. They posted to their TH-cam channel. And they began to gain a following, which led to a new recording contract with another company. At that point RCA (owned by Sony) began calling up the company that had signed the contract with Pentatonix, trying to get them to sell the contract to RCA. The company said "No, why should we? Sony had its chance and dropped them. Your loss, our gain." (or words to that effect), but RCA was persistent. Eventually RCA offered enough money to finally tempt the record label, and a deal was worked out, bringing Pentatonix full circle back into the arms of Sony.
In 2017 Avi had to leave the group, but they found Matt fairly quickly, and have been working to rearrange some of their older songs so that they work better for Matt's voice. Matt was already phenomenal; he is quickly becoming spectacular.
One of the things that the judges on _The Sing-Off_ said repeatedly was, "You keep surprising us. How long can you keep it up?" By my count, it has now been 11 years, and there is no end in sight.

I enjoyed your reaction and would love it if you did more Pentatonix. Warning -- their label and Vevo are really bad about blocking their videos. Most Pentatonix reactors get around it by altering the video -- reduce the size, increase the transparency and / or overlay some text or a graphic. Pentatonix has a wide variety to choose from: a lot of Christmas music and also covers of pop songs from a lot of genres, including Motown, EDM, Broadway, Michael Jackson, pop divas of the 90's and 2000's, and K- and J-pop. And they also do their own original songs.

As other comments say three of them were childhood friends and sang together in children's theater and high school. Two more were added when the group formed for the Sing Off (and won, 3rd season). They have been together for ten years now and have a deep catalog. Not only are all five superb singers they are unselfish; whoever is the best for a particular part gets taht part. The Beat Boxer Kevin has a great voice too but you don't hear it a lot since he's busy doing the beats. Their original music is just as good as their covers. Check out Run To You, Happy Now, Coffee in Bed, That's Christmas To Me for some of their originals. They have an amazing work ethic and never disappoint. Their video productions are as nuanced and high quality as their music. Listen to The Prayer or Daft Punk -- complete contrast in every way imaginable but either one will blow your mind. Only one change in lineup 2017 their Bass, Avi Kaplan left the group and they added the guy in the white Jacket, Matt Sallee.

Because you mentioned electronic music, you should really check out their Daft Punk medley, they won a Grammy for their video. I love that you think Mitch's voice was high in this, because he was actually singing low for him.
They started on a show, and they had a bass singer named Avi, and now they have Matt. Both of them are phenomenal basses, and Kevin the beat boxer is not human! Lol the sounds he can make blow my mind. Scott, the blonde guy has an insane range as well. He covers the bass when the actual bass is singing lead, and he hits some crazy high notes. Kirstie is just amazing, she's a mezzo soprano and hits crazy notes too.
As for suggestions, Hallelujah is also a big one for them. My favorites are their evolution songs, specifically evolution of Arianna Grande, Rhianna and Michael Jackson. Can't wait to see you react to more!!

Actually stomps and claps still qualify as a cappella. A cappella means "without instruments" so feet and hands still qualify as "without instruments" IMHO. Pentatonix sometime add an instrument -- mostly cello because Kevin (beatboxer) plays concert-level cello (and beatboxes at the same time).

For mind blowing drum and guitar affects, you need to check out their cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen's guitarist, Brian May, posted it on his social media with the simple caption, "Enjoy!". The beatboxer, Kevin Olusola, does not always sing but when he does buckle up, he has a gorgeous tenor voice. He also plays cello (has appeared at Carnegie Hall twice, once on cello and again on saxophone) and created "cello-boxing".Kevin speaks several languages including fluent Mandarin and graduated pre-med from Yale. To see him perform solo check out his cover of Marian Hill's "Down". Mitch Grasse (with the mullet) is a natural born countertenor which is so rare as to be considered by many to be only one to a generation.

You might want to check out their cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "The Prayer". And yes. The bass is new, since the original bass, Avi, went on his own career. In order: Matt, Kirsty, Scott, Mitch and Kevin.
