The drummers name is Michael Shrieve,he was around 19 or 20 at the time and there was a longer drum 🥁 solo than was shown on this clip, other well known songs are: Black Magic Woman And Oye Como Va
Carlos Santana and the drummer thought they were going on that night so they dropped some acid that was going around Woodstock…..unbeknownst to them they were sent on stage 45 minutes after taking such acid !!! The rest is history 🔥 Carlos said in later interviews that it felt like he was holding a snake instead of his guitar 🎸 Tripping out of his mind for his debut for the world (Legend) ❤️🔥🎸
Something I love about this clip is the expression on the musician's faces. They are loving it up there. They are so happy just to be playing together.
This Woodstock performance, yes I agree , was like being put into a time machine and a powerful both lightning tstayed real long hitting the ground non-stop; the passion of everybody else on stage were altogether profound. Love and Respect. And another yes, it was like a holy grail that defined what it feels like --- when being freed by the golden years of rock music. This is masterpiece work of art.
Oh yeah: Latin rock, Chicano rock, Latin jazz fusion ... pick your category. I saw them two weeks after Woodstock, when they played at the Texas International Pop Festival in Lewisville, Texas. Fantastic.
I love your reactions, like this one, mouth closed, ears opened, and beautiful facial expression. They are all part of a person's reaction. Some honestly believe their little 'clever joke' supercede Jim Morrison speaking as one the greatest poets of all time. You show great respect, for the 'musician', Thank you.
Neal Schon & Greg Rolly from the Band Journey were in this band back in the day ;) they are both in this vid. ;) Awesome piece of Music History! Both were Teens here lol :O. Peace, Love & Music from South Tx. :)🤠
unfortunately this is the short edited version . Michael Shrieve the drummer was only about 19-20 years old and has a GREAT solo on the long version . Before this performance NOBODY outside of San Francisco had heard of or even knew who Santana even was
Ultra great song to react to. Enjoyed the music playin' and you groovin'. I love all kinds of music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Some fun stuff in the 50s too.
The drummer is Michael Shrieve, please listen to "The Waves Within" another favourite from Santana which highlights the drummer and his amazing skill and contribution to that song. Blessings!🙏
It is still a great song. But the context of the time is long gone. The resurgence of Latin (AfroCuban) music into the US market. But with the psychedelic and rock orientation. That influence disappears when Cuba went communist. The drummer was Michael Shrieve Unfortunately, you got the edited version without the long drum/percussion solo. Thank you for sitting back and enjoying it and not having to comment every few seconds. Your expression was comment enough. A few years later Santana was far more a jazz band. He came back in the 80s with more the latin rock and has been releasing albums in various genres over the years. I've seen him many times since the early 70s. Always a great live show. The version we listened to in the day was about 14 minutes. A long song to react to. You did a good job. Thanks
WOODSTOCKI !!! SANTANA !!! Yeah - Is this the full version or the shortened one. BTW Chicago released their 1st album in 69 and were booked for Woodstock but their agent decided to send Santana instead. Santana was taking a long time to set up so they asked Country Joe to came onstage and he made history with - "The Fish Cheer/I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die Rag" - aka the Vietnam war song.
This is the shortened version. You can tell by the drum solo - Michael Schrieve slows down almost to nothing on the long version, but this one breezes through his solo.
It hurts me every time i see a reaction to this version, where the fkn drumsolo basically got cut out completely.. Why is this the most popular version?? :/ *you would love the full version as well! :)
Was this the first group to mix rock with latino music influences or whatever the right description is? It is so different, and visually represented by the white, black, Hispanic men all playing together which you don't see that much.
The drummer fucking massacred this performance. So nasty. The power of acid. Ego removal, you become a larger organism, the parts fade away. It’s just the song and they are communicated on another level. It’s a beautiful thing to see.
you are playing the bad edited version, here is the full version...Santana:SOUL SACRIFICE:Woodstock Music Festival, August, 1969 th-cam.com/video/xBG6IaSQCpU/w-d-xo.html
I drove from Indianapolis to see a show at Cleveland Stadium in the early 70s. There were 4 acts - "The Band", Jesse Colin Young, Santana and Crosby, Stills and Nash. All were great, but the most outstanding was Santana.
@@kentclark6420 Mescaline, its name is a derivative of the mescal cactus; however, is the hallucinogenic component of peyote. Mescaline, made from the Peyote cactus was never mass produced and was a minuscule amount available back in the late 60s. Whereas, LSD produced in large amounts often labeled Orange Sunshine were prolific and widely available, especially in the large cities like LA where I was during that time. Acid was often disguised and sold as Mescaline. The reason was to help overcome fears of having a bad trip that media of the day was touting. One popular method to disguise LSD as Mescaline was to crush LSD pills into a powder, mix with cocoa and put the mix into a gelatin tablet. I was often duped to believe I was taking so-called mescaline. Whatever label one wants to place on the drug, the effect was still the same.
First you say something about the band & who is who & when & are you new to the song...this so dumb of you.. improve you self... I know Carlo from 1969 ..I was 18 then saw this Woodstock movie...4.30 minutes with two intermissions in 70 mm 16 track stereo Phonic sound in 1972 or so... Writting from Madras , Tamil Nadu. Hello planet earth. Love your channel but you are acting like you don't know who CARLOS SANTANA is????. He is the heart and soul of music. Listen to his music. Listen to most 70's music. It blows away everything today. Analog mixing boards rule. Today's digital music is total garbage. The depth of analog music is off the chart. Don't tell me about old school. You wish today's music could come close to this magic.
The drummers name is Michael Shrieve,he was around 19 or 20 at the time and there was a longer drum 🥁 solo than was shown on this clip, other well known songs are:

I was there. Santana rocked the entire crowd. Everybody was cool.
U Lucky Guy U lol. I was only 6 @ the time. but I was Def, Jammin lol Peace :)
I'm not a jealous person but damn it lol I'd have loved to be there
U lucky swine, fair do's to U

Sometimes being so high works.
It was Jerry Garcia who gave him the acid.
It's been said it was mescaline.
Fantastic!!!
Carlos said they dropped mescaline.
Something I love about this clip is the expression on the musician's faces. They are loving it up there. They are so happy just to be playing together.
Glad I got to live through that. Best times of my life now I’m old but I can still listen.
I was too young to go but watching it and reading about it sure was amazing.

Michael Shrieve rocks for sure. Watch this with the full drum solo.
Michael Shrieve was the Drummer at just 20 years old he was the youngest Performer at Woodstock!
Oh yeah: Latin rock, Chicano rock, Latin jazz fusion ... pick your category. I saw them two weeks after Woodstock, when they played at the Texas International Pop Festival in Lewisville, Texas. Fantastic.

One of the greatest live performances ever, even for those of us who've seen this many times. The Mike Shrieve show.

6.12.23. This performance put Santana🎸 on the music scene map🎯
Neal Schon & Greg Rolly from the Band Journey were in this band back in the day ;) they are both in this vid. ;) Awesome piece of Music History! Both were Teens here lol :O. Peace, Love & Music from South Tx. :)🤠
My brother's band covered this in high school. The drummer was 14 and was truly as good as this guy in Santana. Banned Falyfe. Happy days!

You need to watch the full version! They cut most of the drum solo out on this video!
The drummer is Michael Shrieve, please listen to "The Waves Within" another favourite from Santana which highlights the drummer and his amazing skill and contribution to that song. Blessings!🙏
They cut Michael shrieve's drum solo out of this video. BUMMER!!
The abridged version should be sent to middle earth.
I believe that this was the best lineup Santana ever had.
The drummer was Michael Shrieve! 20 years old at the time
Michael Shrieve Drummer
Santana awesome performance early in their career.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
There we go !!!
I was lucky enough to have been to five concerts that included Santana.
It is still a great song. But the context of the time is long gone. The resurgence of Latin (AfroCuban) music into the US market. But with the psychedelic and rock orientation. That influence disappears when Cuba went communist.
The drummer was Michael Shrieve

High as freakin kites here, yet they killed it!

Drum solo was cut in half in this video. Original is much better.
7:04 Santana was like "my guy, we gotta stop sometime"

Mescaline, just a few of them.

You would really like Smooth.

hate this short, chopped version of the video. One of the best drum solos ever almost completely cut out.
That Girl should get out more never heard of Santana had she been locked up in a cupboard
Watch the longer version. This version didn't do the drummers solo justice. Epic solo
you are playing the bad edited version, here is the full version...Santana:SOUL SACRIFICE:Woodstock Music Festival, August, 1969 th-cam.com/video/xBG6IaSQCpU/w-d-xo.html
Every video Drum solo cut why dont understand because it is incredible

Mescaline!

Wow, That had to be a phenomenal concert.
Michael Shrieve
Yes, yes, yes. I could watch Michael Shrieve all day.
I think they groove and play better when they're all peaking on acid like this.
Mescaline.
